In an outstanding debut campaign in England’s top-flight, Rickie Lambert has proven a cut-price Fantasy sensation. Although he’d racked up the goals in the lower divisions, many had initially questioned Lambert’s ability to adapt to the Premier League but he’s done so seamlessly and, as the season progresses, shows little sign of letting up.

In retrospect, the opening three Gameweeks hinted at what was to come. Lambert found the net in the Saints’ defeat at City on the opening weekend of the season and followed that up with a goal and assist in a narrow home loss to United a couple of fixtures later. A brace at home to Villa in Gameweek 6 harvested the first victory of the campaign – whether his side win or lose, he’s still managed to produce.

What’s been most impressive about Lambert is his consistency. He’s registered 141 points, which is third top on the forward standings, despite managing just three sets of double figures all season – he’ played in all of Southampton’s 27 fixtures and has scored or assisted in 13 of those matches. With 12 goals and seven assists accrued, he’s played a part in 19, or 50%, of his side’s goals and has also received 22 bonus points for his endeavours.

In spite of his scoring exploits, it’s somehow taken the arrival of new boss Mauricio Pochettino to finally convince Fantasy managers of Lambert’s worth –as recently as Gameweek 25 he was sitting at a price of 6.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), just 0.4 up on his initial price. The Argentine’s installation seems to have boosted Lambert further, though; he has now scored or assisted in each of his last three – his most consistent run of returns this term and, with a superb set of fixtures to follow, the bandwagon has finally arrived.

Sitting just three points from safety, the Saints are afforded four home games in the next six to boost their chances of survival. QPR, Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham all roll up to St Mary’s and with trips to Norwich and Reading also on the radar, there’s reason for optimism for Pochettino’s troops. Indeed, the Saints’ strength of schedule makes Lambert a season-keeper; with spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces, his current cost of 7.0 continues to look a bargain. Bearing in mind only Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez have managed to outscore him so far for forwards, it’s no surprise to learn that Lambert is the top value player in FPL so far this term.

Another factor in his favour is Pochettino’s selection policy. Jason Puncheon had previously proven a strong fifth midfielder option but while Lambert goes from strength to strength, the winger’s minutes diminish. Puncheon dropped to the bench at Newcastle last weekend and was afforded just 10 minutes in the 4-2 defeat, while fellow midfield option Gaston Ramirez also played the role of second-half sub. With the fixture list smiling so favourably on the Saints, there seems little doubt that if they are to beat the drop, Lambert will play a pivotal part over the final 11 Gameweeks of the season.

I did Fell>Bale as I couldn't risk him not playing, missing out on more Bale points, and suffering a price drop whilst Bale rises again!

Doubtless Bale will blank and Fellaini will get a brace!! 🙂

Getting rid of RVP makes more sense if you believe Utd will beat Madrid and progress in the CL.

As much as I'd like to see this, I can't see them doing it.

No CL = League/FA Cup for Utd and less RVP rotation?

I think he'll start tomorrow and come off after 60 minutes or so after the win is secured so I'm not getting rid. If United did go out of the CL then I don't see any reason why he won't start every PL game afterwards.

RVP goes back into my first 11. Knew I'd never last until the weekend with him on the bench.

Berba on the bench but the amount of flagged players I've got, I doubt it'll matter.

Also, am I mad/too biased to play Debuchy over Davies? Can't see a CS for either side and Debuchy has more attacking threat?

One thing I've learnt is to never trust anything that Fergie says!

If there's any chance of RVP starting against Norwich, I won't be happy with him on my bench! Definitely not selling so I think he's worth starting over Berba atm.

On a similar note, don't think I agree with what you said on the Scoutcast about the entire Man U team changing from Norwich to Madrid. Think at least 4-5 players will start both games, RVP might even be one of them!

RVP owners, would you play him ahead of Sissoko in light of his likely 20 minute cameo? Just feels wrong benching him even though I don't think he'll start, he could very easily score off the bench for instance. Having an alternative like Sissoko makes it a difficult decision though,

I am doing exactly that. He'll only get a cameo if we're behind/drawing which is unlikely. And if that is the case we'd be all over them and have plenty scoring chances in the last 20 mins.

I have the exact same dilemma. I don't think SAF will give him a cameo for the sake of it. I think he will either start or come on if they are losing. If they are winning without RVP, I reckon he'll stay on the bench. I'm willing to take the risk on him, as I'd be sick as a parrot if I missed a big score from him.

Pretty sure the game will get rescheduled to midweek. Not many other slots available later on.

Yeah...The coming DGW for United doesn't have many easy picks for FPL players. IF!! United beat Real then i would think Rooney/Evra/DDG would be the most nailed on players for a DGW...Should United lose to Real then RVP would become an easy pick....but as it stands today i would go for Rooney...

Aguero has been in pretty poor real life form imo. RVP to Roooney? Won't get rested if not injured. I'd take a hit for Sissoko in too if you can still afford it.

Nah, there's been a few chances created by Bale crying out for someone like Defoe to get on the end of them. Even if Spurs play 2 up front, I think Bale's role won't change much.

Fascinating turn of events in the last few hours.

RVP is confirmed fit and "available".

Fellaini goes from seemingly fine to having "a chance"

Now I have to decide whether to do RVP > Suarez or Fellaini to Sissoko or neither and save the FT...

Anyone think Fellaini will play and it's just a Moyes' way of making it seem worse to justify him not starting the last match?
