With the double Gameweek 33 edging every closer, our consideration of player recommendations for the next four fixtures brings it into play, boosting the appeal of Arsenal, Everton and United assets. Our Watchlist rankings have had their weekly refresh in your sidebars; read on for our position-by-position breakdown of the key movements.

Goalkeepers

This area of our squads remains highly problematic. Injuries to first choice options like Tim Howard, Pepe Reina, Tim Krul and John Ruddy continue to cloud the issue, while we’ve now been hit by Mark Bunn’s one-match ban for his red received at Sunderland. With Ali Al-Habsi dropped to the bench for Wigan and Wojciech Szczesny seemingly out of favour, our options continue to be limited further by the week.

It means that some will be in the market for an acquisition in this area, and with just four ever-present keepers in the league this season, the temptation to opt for a reliable heavy-hitter as a fire and forget option is strong.

United’s David De Gea sits on top of our rankings, having cemented his start between the posts and returned five consecutive clean sheets. With the United back four’s game time under threat now the title now in their grasp, the Spaniard has gone from being a rotation concern to perhaps the most secure defensive option on offer. He’s also reasonably priced, of course: with his 5.7 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, only Jonny Evans can be acquired for less in the United backline.

If that’s a bit rich for your tastes, then Arsenal’s Lukas Fabianski is your punt in the budget bracket. We’ve stuck our necks out here, predicting that the Pole could well retain his start with his compatriot, Wojciech Szczesny, out of favour at the Emirates. Certainly the recent words of Szczesny’s father will likely do him few favours when it comes to winning back his place and Fabianski has experience, plus a clean sheet at the Liberty last time out, to help his cause. At just 4.3 in the FPL, he offers an intriguing end of season option and, if you’ve got decent back-up in reserve, you can perhaps take a risk on Fabianski for the Arsenal double.

West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen is our mid-price solution. Coming in at 5.1 in the FPL, the West Ham stopper has two clean sheets in his last five and, with 118 saves, offers supplementary points aplenty. Like Fabianski, he has a double Gameweek in his favour, putting the Finn firmly back on our radars.

While QPR’s Julio Cesar is perhaps a risk as a one-stop solution, the Brazilian offers a strong partnership with Jaaskelainen, providing effective cover for Gameweeks 32 and 35 when West Ham visit Liverpool and Man City. The duo also rotate home and away for the final three fixtures to offer a decent run-in (NEW NEW RDG).

Elsewhere in our rankings, we still have time for Petr Cech as a secure defensive option in Rafa Benitez’s rotating rearguard, while Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer is showing outstanding form with just four goals conceded in the last six league outings. The Cottagers have decent short-term fixtures but the schedule does stiffen for the final run-in.

Southampton’s Artur Boruc is benefiting from an improved Southampton defence and is buoyant after the penalty save at Carrow Road, while Asmir Begovic grabbed a first clean sheet in 12 at home to West Brom last weekend. The Stoke defence are showing shoots of recovery at the back, as Tony Pulis’ side bank on defensive resolve to see them achieve a comfortable mid-table position.

Defenders

With the goalkeeper situation perhaps uncertain at the Emirates, attentions will turn to the defence only to find that Arsene Wenger’s recent rotation policy across the back four makes acquisition very difficult. Arguably, having looked shaky in early season, Per Mertesacker is now the preferred option in central defence, with Laurent Koscielny his current partner as Thomas Vermaelen admits to his recent faltering form. Mertesacker has started the last nine league matches and can be brought in for Arsenal’s double Gameweek for 5.3 in the FPL. Koscielny is available for an identical price, with less security but, arguably, the greater goal threat.

The big German topples Glen Johnson at the top of our rankings, then, although Liverpool’s right-back holds in our top five with fixtures remaining favourable in the short-term. Jose Enrique is, of course, the alternative on offer in Brendan Rodgers’ ranks.

Everton’s Leighton Baines is another to benefit from an impending double fixture – he climbs to third spot, having plunged the depths in recent weeks. With injuries throughout the Everton lineup, Baines may have to rely on attacking returns to repay the investment but he remains a likely target for Gameweek 33, regardless.

With Rafael and Pablo Zabaleta completing our five, this is an expensive recommended defensive outfit, leading us to look lower down the rankings for mid-price and budget alternatives. QPR’s Chris Samba and Norwich City’s Seb Bassong still tempt us in the mid-price – Samba, in particular, was unfortunate to miss out on attacking returns at Villa last time out.

West Ham’s Winston Reid comes in cheaper than that pairing and has a double Gameweek to bolster his appeal – the likes of Joey O’Brien and Guy Demel also offer a route into Sam Allardyce’s rearguard, although with George McCartney nearing a return, the full-back situation in the Hammers camp looks fuzzy.

Fulham’s Sascha Riether is another consideration in the same bracket given his attacking form and the Cottagers’ recent record of three shut-outs in five. Stoke’s Marc Wilson and Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne are our nominated budget offerings.

Midfielders

Despite faltering at Anfield and at home to Fulham, it’s hard to deny Gareth Bale top spot in the rankings considering his blistering form to that point. The fixture list is against him but the Welshman surely remains the top consideration when shopping in this position.

The Arsenal duo of Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla are on his tail, however. Both have huge appeal with the Gameweek 33 double looming and many Fantasy managers will be looking to partner them for the home fixtures with Norwich and Everton – with a lack of viable attacking options elsewhere in the Gunners squad.

Eden Hazard’s form has him replace Juan Mata as our nominated Chelsea midfielder, although, arguably, given the Blues’ hectic schedule, investment in either is questionable. Hazard’s form is hard to ignore, however, and with the likes of Michu faltering and Marouane Fellaini banned for two-matches, the Belgian holds in our top five.

Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko also keeps his rank with home matches with Fulham and Sunderland to come – holding off the Liverpool pair of Steven Gerrard and Stewart Downing, with Philippe Coutinho also an option, sandwiched between his two midfield team-mates in terms of FPL pricing.

Further down, we find QPR’s Andros Townsend coming into consideration off the back of two goals in two matches. The Tottenham loanee pushes both Shaun Maloney and Robert Snodgrass for that fifth midfielder slot and appears to be the option of choice for those looking to free up funds: Townsend can be acquired for just 4.5 in the FPL.

Forwards

Perhaps the most controversial area of our squads, as Robin Van Persie’s blip is prolonged to six Gameweeks with just a single goal returned. We’re keeping the faith with the Dutchman over the form of team-mate Wayne Rooney, simply because we cannot see Van Persie’s fortunes failing to recover given his level of involvement and set-piece responsibilities. Our soon to be published “Versus” article for members perhaps further evidence that has steered our current thinking.

Daniel Sturridge remains in the top three, as Luis Suarez is forced down our rankings, teetering on the suspension tightrope. One yellow card in any of the next three league matches will see the Uruguayan banned for two outings, a factor that surely has to come into consideration when it comes to acquisitions up front. Suarez’s form is superb but he’s undoubtedly a risk, despite strong fixtures.

Both Christian Benteke and Rickie Lambert maintained their form in Gameweek 30 to enjoy slight climbs in our reckoning. Fulham’s Dimitar Berbatov, the most sought-after striker in the FPL at the moment, also climbs and is firmly back in our thinking ahead of the local derby with QPR at the Cottage: it’s three goals in three games for the Bulgarian.

Lower down, Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud undoubtedly has double Gameweek appeal but his form is a concern – like Walcott, he’s gone five league starts without a goal, which could yet prompt a change from Wenger now that Gervinho is available; the Ivorian also found the net late on at Swansea last weekend.

Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez is the new budget consideration. The former Burnley marksman has shown outstanding recent form and has played his way onto the team-sheet at St Mary’s with returns in five of his last seven appearances. Available for just 5.1, Rodriguez is always going to suffer from Lambert’s popularity but offers coverage of the Saints revival for a cut-down price. It’s a similar story for Villa’s Andreas Weimann who, of course, is overshadowed by team-mate Benteke, but offers a cheap route to a Villa attack that suddenly looks vibrant as they fight for survival. Villa have scored in all but one of the last eight and the Austrian can be acquired for just 5.0, offering another intriguing third striker alternative.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

As a Merteacker owner, i'm not feeling very comfortable. I'm convinced he will be dropped for Vermo in one of the next two home games. He's been our best defender this year, no doubt, but i can't see Wenger keeping out our captain for too long.

To be honest, captain or no captain, Koscielny and Mertesacker are performing so much better than Vermaelen. If Wenger sticks by his, whoever plays best plays the next game, then we won't see Thomas for a while.

I would very much doubt it. Zabaleta has been hands down their most consistent player all season - not difficult granted - I'd be very surprised if Richards came in to replace him. We might see rotation to some degree but I'd still back Zabaleta as the best option back there.

There is a problem though, if Mancini switches to a 3-5-2 in order to accomodate Micah then there is the possibility of Zaba switching to cb, thereby lessening his FPL appeal as his attacking prospects are likely to diminish.

Plus who knows what goes on in Mancini's head

The 3-5-2 is still a potential league winning formation. May as well try and get it working now whilst they have nothing to lose in preperation for next season. Plus Richards would really help it by playing CB in it.

Its between Hazard (form) and Cazrola (fixtures).

If you can bear the worry of holding Chelsea players you could hold Hazard for 2 weeks then consider either keeping or exchanging him for Carzola.

2 days before the April fools encounter between Chelsea and Man Utd who will play in GW 31 is right up in the air.

          RVP > Rooney
          Michu > Santi Cazorla
If you are going to take a hit you must downgrade him. Getting rid of Suarez is the most kneejerk i have seen. He will make a mock of people that sell him before his 10th yellow.

Agree with that, and you have to have balls to get rid of Suarez before his ban, but with AV, WHM and Reading if he doesn't get the ban you surely can't get rid at this point. And Liverpool always seem to bounce back after a shocking loss.

    Thanks for this Mark,

    A few thoughts:

Mertesacker looks to be an ideal pick, even if he has no real attacking threat...he's arguably the most nailed on.

Very surprised Mata fails to make the watchlist entirely...why is that? And why does Walters make it? The midfield picks actually look a bit random and unclear. But maybe that reflects the general uncertainty about midfield picks lately.

Also, how does Ba make the forwards list and there is no Mata or Lampard? Ba has C form and Rest risk. Is he really worthy of a place ahead of the two aforementioned Chelsea players?

And why is RVP ahead of Rooney if his form is C and Rooney's is A?

    Thanks!

Mentioned in article as an option, not included because Gerrard and Downing cover the top end and lower end of the price bracket. He may come in for Downing very soon - I'm still not totally convinced we'll see Rodgers persevere with the current system, particularly after defeat at Southampton. Coutinho still seems a little vulnerable - more so than Downing for me at the moment.

Well said Mark, I See BR going back to having hendo or shelvey in the middle with gerro and lucas where he thinks they will need some defensive resolve (especially away) and this means that coutinho is likely to drop out to allow suarez play on the left imo.

They have had no balance imo with coutinho and sturridge in the same team as he also plays downing and suarez leaving the midfield and defence exposed

Maybe you're right. I still think Coutinho has done very little wrong since joining and looks mightily impressive. It would be a shame for him to not play. I've been more impressed with him than Sturridge personally.

I am not saying he has done anything wrong at all, just that they lack balance between defence and attack when playing all four fwds (whoever thought I would include downing as a fwd ono).

They had their best run of form when hendo was playing in the middle three and sturridge/suarez up front on his own. There will be more southampton results around the corner if he persists with coutinho lw suarez no10 and sturridge up top imo and it is the one thing that pisses me off about owning GJ more than anything 🙁

We rarely have more than one player in the same position for the same club unless there is merit in doubling up - e.g.: Walcott and Cazorla. I don't see anyone doubling on the Chelsea midfield so we stick our necks out and go with one recommendation, with an obvious nod to the other options.

Ba makes the list because he's a forward and therefore isn't using a precious midfield slot - simple as that. He's very low down but we felt he warranted inclusion.

RVP is ahead of Rooney based on factors other than form - as alluded to in the article, our members piece will go through some of this later. Plus, it comes down to my personal viewpoint - like I say in the article, I just can't see Van Persie being kept down for much longer.

But does that mean you are saying a Hazard and Ba combo is better than Hazard and Mata/Lampard. Imo there is legitimate evidence there to suggest that the latter is a better option not only in gameweeks gone by but in future gameweeks.

Ok, I wouldn't be that keen on a Chelsea double up in midfield at this moment in time but if I'd done it last week I would have been feeling good right now and actually would be happy enough going into this week too. Whereas if I had Ba I'd probably be pulling my hair out!

Hmmm. fair enough on the RVP point and I appreciate you want to hold your thoughts on it for a later article. Can I just ask, is Value taken into account when ordering players on the watchlist?

I don't think we saying Hazard/Ba is a better combo - we're saying Ba is the 14th best striker to sign right now. If we listed Mata, Hazard and Lampard and did similar for other clubs - there's a danger that the Watchlist will just be flooded with players from a few teams rather than listing a variety of options at different price brackets. For example, you could argue that Agger, Enrique and Johnson should all be listed given their fixtures - instead we opt for one.

We presume some knowledge in that, a Fantasy manager can see Hazard ranked fourth and go "No, I prefer Lampard". If there was a significant difference in price between the Chelsea mids, we may include all three, as it is, I just think its best we select our choice and go with that, mentioning the options in the article.

Lots of points here, but in general I think the watchlist is in pretty good state at the moment. He's explained that he doesn't like doubling up, and in that case most of the individual choices on the watchlist are very understandable.

Dutch players tend to lose confidence if they're not starting week in week out. Could this be a factor?

That's a load of baloney re; Dutch players, in my opinion.

      Playing devil's advocate:

Rooney v van Persie Rooney did nothing but get a deflected goal.

Hazard is the inform chelsea player, particularly at home. 2 of the next 3 are at home.
Mata still ok away but lacks goal threat, good for the odd assist.

Issak wrote some very good posts in which he reviewed the problems Lampard poses to Mata's goal threat. I completely concur with this view.

      1) Lampard takes up advanced positions once occupied by Mata

Also as lampard is too far upfront for a DM and can't/won't (?) tackle
      2) Lampard damages Chelsea's clean sheet appeal

Definitely lacks goal threat in my opinion. I've never had him, and was punished for it regularly, but I've never really seen the stats to back it up from him, relative to what the Michus, Fellainis, Bales, Cazorlas etc of this world were producing.

I think Mata is a cut above most attacking midfielders for all round threat. Michu has barely any assist potential, for example. There's an example of a guy who only scores goals, that's it really. Which is great...but not all that inspiring sometimes.

On the contrary, there is very few players that have such overall attacking flair as Mata. He constantly has loads of key passes/chances created and if he's not doing that he's having shots, and if he's not doing that he's on set pieces. But he is always looking to attack which is great. His consistency over this season and past seasons is almost unrivaled.

Agree he's great, apart from the goal threat (and of course the current rotation problem).

2 shots a game averaged this season. You'll find better for the price, and this game is all about goals and the bonus points which come with them. But hey, lots of people like him and in general they've done very well out of it.

Well it's just that extra bit of know-how though. Taarabt is definitely averaging more shots than Mata per game...but is he any better? Is he way better value over Mata if he plays every game? Not really, not really at all.

I think Mata is a pretty clinical finisher when he needs to be but his main role is being the creative playmaker above all else. So he does tend to go some games where he will play that playmaker role much more than being a goal threat. It's just taking the stats with a pinch of salt really. Ok he hasn't been spectacular but neither was RVP all that spectacular stats-wise over any other striker while he was scoring consistently. That talent/clinical nature and consistency is sometimes what you pay for.

And that's the only point I'm really trying to make...that Mata is one of those players that is arguably world class on his day. And while he might be prone to dips in form, there might be sense in being patient with him, like earlier on in the season when he repaid the patience of owners handsomely.

Hey Charlie I don't have any stats to prove it but I remember looking back on it before and I think they reason mata's has a poor ppg at home is he has only come on as a sub in 3/4 of them and has been rested for the games v easier opposition at home to keep him fresh for away games. I think if mata plays at home for 90mins he will score just as well as when away but as I say I have no stats to back it up, just opinion

Benitez is a stat man and rotates on the basis of previous games. (not recent form).

Damn you Charlie you have made me open up FPL and look at my awful team 🙁

Benitez first home game was v man city 0-0 next game was also a home game three days later 0-0 v fulham where mata was dropped. next home game v viall 8-0 matta played 73 mins before being rested with one assist (as I remember he could have had a hattrick in that game too), next home game was QPR 0-1 where mata only got the last 16mins, next was SOU 2-2 where he got 90mins, then ARS 90mins 2-1 with 9pts for mata, next home WIG 4-1 (14mins for mata)

Basically in summary rafa has benched him in all the easier games excpet SOU and Villa (which they won well partly down to him) and as a result they drew v FUL and lost v QPR. If mata had got a chance to play those easier games i think he would have a lot highter pts per game at home.

And one last point, he didn't start resting him at home as he realised he was underperforming as he started resting home (v weaker teams only) in his second home game!

    Ireland team announced.
What a shambles, Paul Green in midfield! Who? That's right Paul Green, and he's ginger to top it all off.
Sweden 4-0 I reckon, Trapatoni to finally be shown the door, and why oh why does he announce the team a day early? I think it's an attempt to strike fear into the hearts of the opponents. The only fear they will have is that they fail to score 6.
Green, Brady and McClean all in the one midfield. We are now on a par with Wales and Scotland and that's being very generous.

Ba is getting chances also but seems to have some of Torres confidence problems.

Chelsea just destroy forwards (or should I say decoy forwards).

Forwards creates the space for the attacking mids.

I think you need absolute minimum one more game from Fabianski before you commit to him. Wenger could well just have chosen to give Scensey a month off, as he has done with Wilshere. I think it's genuinely pretty 50-50 to see who will start next time; if Fabs starts, he looks set up and we can all think about buying him, but not before in my opinion.

        Jonah, have you noticed this:

Since Carzola has switched to the left wing from 'the hole' this has impacted massively on Walcott's points production.

Watching the games it seems when Arsenal are playing their one touch stuff in the final 3rd it really matters who is left footed and who right footed. A left footed player in 'the hole' will more likely play to the right all things being equal. (thus giving Walcott better service)

Also Carzola scores more than Wilshire so Walcott's assist threat can also be impacted by not having him as an option to pull back to. though in fact he has tends to cross the ball along the 6 yard box instead.

Well I figured that Suarez has a long ways to travel and will be playing both of his country's games. Santi on the other hand, won't be playing nearly as much and will be rested to come in and rip Reading to pieces. His statement that he wants to score more goals reinforces this.

Suarez murders a poor defence. I still think he edges it despite his recent blank. To be honest my major doubt with Suarez is the effect on him and the team of all this transfer gossip stirred up by his agent.

Yeah that would be tricky then. Plus, does he hold back now on the intensity now that he's one yellow away from the ban? A lot of points to ponder. Good luck mate

He's too good to be a utility man. But we are weak at LB and CM so would love him him back in CM. But if you're short there then that's where he should play.

No way would I ever captain him over any of Caz, Theo, Bale, Rooney or Luis but given Wigan's defensive record at home, and his penchant for picking up points away, I think the boy Snodgrass could be a nice little differential for me this week.

He has fantastic assist potential particularly through dead-ball situations away from home. This is pretty much Norwich's only route to goals away from home. Their recent lack of goals, however, must be a concern

Either Chelsea OR United, depends on the outcome of the replay. One will have a DGW, one will not.

If Chelsea win the Spurs game is postponed, giving a United DGW and a Chelsea SGW. If United win, Chelsea have a DGW, and United a SGW
