Sir Alex Ferguson hints at concerns over Robin Van Persie’s fitness levels. Micah Richards and Maicon step up their injury recoveries ahead of the Manchester derby, Jermain Defoe is sidelined with a muscle injury for Spurs, while Roberto Martinez praises his players’ character after the weekend win over Norwich:

Sir Alex Ferguson took time out to discuss his plans for United’s four forwards over the remainder of the season yesterday. With United set to entertain City at Old Trafford on Monday evening, their manager revealed:

“I’ve no worries about Rooney because he’s needing games, he’s the kind of player who has to play all the time. With Van Persie, we have to monitor it because we still don’t know all about Robin, and the kind of seasons he’s had. I don’t think he had a season of such intensity during his time at Arsenal, so we’ll have to look at that. Welbeck’s looking strong as well, as is Chicharito.”

While it seems unlikely that Ferguson will omit Van Persie from the United starting XI for the top of the table showdown, it may well be that he intends to utilise the Dutchman more sparingly if his side clinch the title in the next few matches. A win over City would lead United 18 points ahead with seven games remaining – they would then need a maximum four points in double Gameweek 33 away to Stoke and West Ham in order win the league; achieve that, and Ferguson may hands the likes of Hernandez more game time alongside Rooney and take Van Persie out the firing line. Having scored just once in the last seven for United, the summer signing’s goals have all but dried up – while Ferguson’s words will certainly have Van Persie’s 37% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners on edge, there’s no doubt his omission from the United XI would provide a fascinating twist in the final few Gameweeks of the Fantasy season.

City defensive duo Micah Richards and Maicon stepped up their recoveries from injury last night by turning out for the club’s Under 21 side. Richards, who has failed to feature since Gameweek 9 after sustaining a knee injury, was fielded at centre-half and was eased back into action with a 45 minute first-half run out. Maicon, who has played 35 minutes in the league from Gameweek 16 onwards due to a similar complaint, lasted just over an hour before being subbed off as planned. While their comebacks are surely too soon to see either involved for Monday’s Manchester derby, the pair could be pushing for game time shortly – something of a worry for Pablo Zabaleta’s owners, given the Argentine has started every match from Gameweek 13 onwards due to a lack of competition for the right-back berth.

Andre Villas-Boas has revealed Jermain Defoe is set to be sidelined for Tottenham’s next couple of matches:

“He has a muscle injury that is definitely going to take him out of the next two games, and maybe Basel away. If he can’t make Basel away he should be fit for that week when we prepare for Manchester City. It’s a big blow. It’s not the same muscle as before. He had a small tear last month but it’s on the other side [leg] now. Obviously it’s a big miss, he has showed tremendous quality for us this season.”

Defoe’s absence gives Emmanuel Adebayor further opportunity in the lone forward role in Sunday’s home clash with Everton. Despite scoring a mere two league goals all season, the Togo international has now started four of the last five ahead of Defoe, with Villas-Boas’ decision to move Gareth Bale centrally denting the former West Ham forward’s game time. Given that Defoe has scored just once since Gameweek, the north London club’s reliance on Bale has been all too apparent over the last few months, with eight goals now accrued in his last eight league games. The Spurs boss admitted he intends to keep fielding the Welshman through the middle, going on to say:

“With his run of form, as a striker he is most effective. He is extremely comfortable playing as a striker. The more he plays there the more he is likely to be helping the team.”

Roberto Martinez has heaped praise on the Wigan XI that saw off Norwich at the DW last weekend. The 1-0 win earned the Latics their first home clean sheet of the season, with their manager enthusing:

“I don’t think we were stylish as we normally are, but what we showed is an incredible character. Every player found a way to help the team to keep Norwich very quiet. To restrict any team in the Premier League to no shots on target requires massive effort. And then it was that little bit of quality at the other end. The character we showed made it probably our most pleasing and satisfying performance of the season. It was a team effort with tired legs doing everything needed to get us over the finish line”

Having won five of the last six games in all competitions, Martinez’s side are now through to the FA Cup semi-final and have climbed out the drop zone with eight matches remaining. The last three fixtures, in particular, have seen the Wigan boss ring the changes and bring some new names onto Fantasy radars; Joel Robles, Jordi Gomez and Callum McManaman have edged Ali Al-Habsi, James McArthur and Franco Di Santo onto the bench and with Paul Scharner returning on loan and Antolin Alcaraz fit and available after long-term injury, Martinez has changed half of his starting XI in recent matches. Robles, in particular, has sprung onto Fantasy radars – since getting the nod ahead of Al-Habsi for the FA Cup quarter final win at Everton, he has conceded once in three matches and at 4.0 in FPL, is already being eyed in in advance ahead of the Latics’ double Gameweek 36.

He needs 12,000 transfers out over the course of today and tomorrow. On Saturday after the deadline his flag will lift and then, I think, his price will freeze. So it needs to happen Friday night (Sat small hours). He had 3000 out yesterday and 715 so far today. The pace will definitely pick up, so a drop is possible Friday night, but I'm sweating it.

Will get lost on last page.

Would you save the FT for DGW 33?

    Team for this week:

    DDG
    JEvans Dawson Monreal (Clyne, Pearce)
    Walcott Mata Bale Sissoko (Guthrie)
    RVP Suarez (c) Benteke

    Gents,
Bit of a long one but I'd really appreciate some feedback on my proposed transfers. My team is

    DDG (Fed)
    Martin, Zab, Wilson (Davies) (Mariappa)
    Mata, Bale, Sissoko, Cazorla (Walcott)
    RVP, Suarez, Lambert

I have 2FTs and 0.1 in the bank. This week I was planning on doing Davies>Demel (can't afford Davies>Sagna with 1 transfer), then doing 3 transfers (-4) for the DGW: Mata, Lambert, Mariappa> Fellaini, Berbatov, Sagna), but now I'm tempted to do RVP>Rooney with my FT and just go without Demel. What would you do?

    Thanks.

Team looks good and would normally say 'save the transfer' but you already have two 🙂 RVP to Rooney is a brave move, but might pay-off much more than the Demel move... if you're chasing a lead I'd take the gamble.

Thanks Brains. I'm leading my ML by 7 points and my rival has RVP and a West Ham defender so I should probably just play it safe. It's just I can just see Rooney outscoring RVP for the rest of the season. And life is no fun without a bit of risk 😛

i would work out what you think potential gain having rooney is to potential loss for RVP and another DGW player.
however i am not a fan of WHU defenders for DGW, two fixtures dont shout CS so wouldnt be too fussed about not having demel, especially when your forward scoring could wipe out your defender CS

Not sure I would use a transfer to bring in Demel in any event. I have him and will play him, but that costs me nothing. If you use a free transfer this week to bring him in it means another transfer will be for a hit, so it costs you something. Demel is likely to get 2 or 3 over the DGW, with a very slim chance of more. Not sure I'd do it.

Also not sure I'd do RVP to Rooney. I have Rooney, but I'm not convinced that SAF's hints can be relied on. Guesswork. The other transfers look sensible.

Am lucky enough to still have my WC but want to make the most of it as likely to be crucial.

Currently have 4 DGW33 players, so could get to 7 for the double with one hit, not too bad.

I'm thinking WC GW33 to get the points on the board. What are the arguments for holding onto it for a few more weeks and if so, when would be best to use it otherwise?

I'd use it in GW36 .. teams that week have nice subsequent fixtures so it'll set you up for a bumper GW36 haul and a decent team to tinker with for the rest of season.

7 doubles with 1 hit is decent for GW33, as long as you're not trebling West Ham defence ..

I'm considering not using my Wc for 33 because I can get this team for -8

      Ddg
      Baines, Sagna, Martin
      Santi Wally, Fell, Lampard
      Suarez, Lambert, Benteke

I don't really want to get Berba for any of my strikers and I can't afford a united striker so I may just hold. It's only 6 Dgw players but I think it's ok

I'm the same. Have 3 by now, could possibly get 7 for thw hits, but maybe not those I actually would want. Also, by using it now, if planned correctly, there's every chance to have a decent team for GW36.

Yes, I hate Vidic, by far the worst centre-back ever to wear a United shirt. And yes, Kagawa is now on par with Iniesta and Ozil, by far one of the best playmakers to ever grace the Premier League.

Cleverley's been a bit pants of late but on his day he's best in that position, him and carrick balance quite nicely. I do like the 4-2-3-1 for us now but don't want us to get pigeon-holed into playing RVP as a lone striker.

Eumesh Jelldav, I saw you wrote a detailed response about Fellaini's possible price fall above.

I take it you are assuming Fellaini has to reach 150% to drop? 12k transfers seems a lot. Are you sure about this? I don't think he needs to reach 150%...I may be mistaken however. Walcott on the other hand may need to reach 150%...

I am just looking at the new, improved FISO. Here's what the line reads:

      -77.6 Marouane Fellaini Midfielder Everton 7.4 -42,466 -54,723 -715

My answer above was based on that and the assumption that as soon as his flag is listed his price freezes.

Ok I see, as I said, I may be mistaken but I thought a suspension was different to an injury. Maybe not.

I was also confused as I remember seeing -77 and thinking wow he's close to a fall, but if it's 55k to drop then I guess it's still a fair amount.

You'd be surprised though the amount that can sell on a Friday night, let's hope he drops!!

You're probably both right. I only know the target FISO is indicating. Are you saying that because his flag is a suspension, his price will not freeze once the flag is lifted? I would be thrilled if that were so.

i dont think rvp or roo are essential in gw33..2 away fixtures i could easily see 2 half arsed performances with the tittle wrapped up..something like the sunderland game gone by

i reckon suarez and lambert could easily match them with their single fixtures..im finding it hard to see past suarez/lambert/berba for gw33 unless suarez gets a yc this gw

Anyone think Kagawa might be worth a punt for the dgw? With Fergie is looking to rest players, he's hardly played at all and could easily play both games? He has played in all the last three, started two and at £7.9m could be a bargain.

For me, it depends on the City game. If Rooney and RVP both get 90, with Kaga doing something good either from the bench (preferably) or from start, it could be a very nice punt.

On a slightly related note, how many players have scored hattricks this season?

no. not likely to play 60+ in both games. and even if he does, do not let the flukey hattrick fool you - he's not a good fpl prospect. 7.9M£ is wayyyyyyyy too much for that piece of shit

Just thought you would like to know that last night I finished in the top 15 of the Scout pool in TotelFootball, for the first time. Problem is that on Tuesday night the site would not let me make a deposit so I was unable to place any bets in the Main Pool. Chances are I would have been out of the money in the Main Pool, but it is just classic that the week I can't make a bet I make the top 10%!
