Scout Report – Iago Aspas

Having acquired Luis Alberto from Sevilla late last week, Liverpool returned to La Liga to finally complete the signing of Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo on a long-term deal. The 25-year-old passed a medical at the club on Sunday afternoon and, subject to international clearance, will arrive at Anfield for a fee believed to be in the region of £7.7m.

The club’s third signing of the summer, after the Reds also picked up Kolo Toure earlier this month, Aspas is reported to have rejected the likes of Valencia and Swansea, in addition to interest from Spain and Italy, in order to push through the transfer. In an interview with the club’s official website, he went on to say:

“It wasn’t a tough decision at all. I’m really happy to have come to a big club like this one. Having weighed up all my options for this window, a massive club like Liverpool was always my first choice. I’ve not had the chance to talk with the manager at any length just yet but I think that good players can slot into any role and not just one set position.”

The History

A product of the Celta Vigo youth academy, Aspas’ career kicked off in 2006-07 for the club’s reserves. He spent three seasons there, scoring 11 goals in 84 appearances before making his first-team breakthrough towards the end of the 2008-09 campaign, where he notched twice in three appearances for the-then second division-based side.

Installed as the club’s main forward, Aspas proceeded to score nine times in 64 league games over the next couple of seasons before finally finding his feet in 2011/12. Racking up 23 strikes in 35 matches, he ended the campaign as top scorer in the Spanish second division, with his displays helping clinch his side’s promotion. Last term was Aspas’ first in La Liga, which he passed with flying colours – with 12 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances his contribution was key to Celta’s survival, playing a part in 19 of their 37 goals over the course of the campaign. Intriguingly, Aspas’ 57% shot accuracy last term would have been second highest in the Premier League, according to the Liverpool site, with Luis Suarez further down the list on 50%.

The Prospects

Although he was mainly fielded as the lone striker in Celta’s 4-2-3-1 system, Aspas will offer Liverpool plenty versatility should Rodgers persist with his preferred 4-3-3 formation. Predominantly left-footed, the Spaniard can be fielded on either flank as well as through the middle and, in addition to possessing a keen eye for goal, is technically adept and will afford the Reds plenty creativity up top.

Crucially for Rodgers, Aspas is also a dynamic type of player who will slot in seamlessly with the club’s pressing game, hassling and chasing down defenders from the front. Judging by the praise from certain quarters, his arrival looks yet another good bit of business from Rodgers, though ultimately, the future of Luis Suarez is likely to determine just where the new boy is utilised. If Rodgers decides to sell his star man, Aspas could well vie with Daniel Sturridge for the central role, though the pair could also alternate on the right, with Rodgers even looking for an interchanging front three along with Philippe Coutinho during matches.

The rumoured deal for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan will also play a part in how we assess the Anfield landscape, with the Armenian’s preference for a role in “the hole” suggesting a move to 4-2-3-1 if he eventually completes his mooted move. Certainly, Rodgers’ desire for increased squad competition this season looks on the cards, though Aspas can surely be expected to knock the likes of Stewart Downing down the pecking order. Although the Liverpool boss sang Alberto’s praises after snapping up the youngster last week, his lack of first-team experience may see him settle for game time from the bench, while the likes of Raheem Sterling and Fabio Borini may have to accept squad roles in the campaign ahead.

Aspas’ price is obviously key across the Fantasy games. Liverpool racked up 71 goals in their first season under Rodgers – the fourth most impressive record in the Premier League – highlighting the potential of their main attacking assets. A cost of around 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely and if Suarez does indeed depart, the Spaniard could well be earmarked by many managers as a real alternative to Sturridge as part of our front three. Ideally, it would suit Fantasy managers best for Suarez to still be at Merseyside when the player price lists are revealed next month and then leave before the season starts – this would ensure he comes in at a cost in accordance with last term’s displays and allow the Reds’ other forwards a kinder price tag. Suarez is, of course, suspended for Liverpool’s opening six fixtures of the season and while Sturridge is currently nursing an ankle injury, he is expected to be ready well in advance for the opener in a couple of months’ time.

There’s no doubt that Coutinho’s cost is also likely to have a say in our plans, though. If, as expected, he remains classified as a midfielder, a price of around 8.0 to 8.5 may be enough to persuade many to invest in the brilliant Brazilian and free up a vital space for our forward three. Given that he produced nine or more points in three of the last four Gameweeks of 2012/13, the former Inter man may well prove the best value of any Liverpool attacker next time round, though if Aspas turns out to be Suarez’s direct replacement, both Coutinho and Sturridge have already shown it’s not all about marquee signings when assessing Liverpool’s Fantasy prospects.

The fixture list is also in Liverpool’s favour. With home games against Stoke, Southampton and Palace allied with trips to Villa, Swansea and Sunderland, Rodgers’ side have the strongest schedule of any side in the opening seven Gameweeks, according to our season ticker. Goals seem likely, then, but picking the correct Liverpool option is becoming increasingly tricky as Rodgers continues to strengthen his options – there is no denying Aspas is a quality signing but perhaps it’ll be only at the end of August, when the transfer window slams shut and Liverpool’s shopping spree is done, that we’re likely to get a better handle on his Fantasy potential for the season ahead.

if chelsea have a DGW1, then, most of us are going to get a chelsea defender.

+VE: 2home games against HULL and VILLA is potential 2 clean sheets + any assist/goal + bonus
-VE: next five gamewks- MANUTD, BLANK, EVERTON, fulham, TOTTENHAM.

what exit routes are you guys planning???

My gw 1 team will likely have Higuain, Aguero, Bale, and Hazard. sooo the only one of that lot that could hurt me is RVP but he's got tough fixtures and I still think that the two Argentines present better value

I don't see how attackers are related to defenders though....

there's no reason you can't downgrade a big defender later if RVP is so essential. and like I said, I think the two Argentines (and Suarez when he's back) will present far better value than RVP

hey mate, remember to keep rotations in mind. have a look at this and see if you can figure out potential rotations for your gk's and your defense: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiIgkb7euD-9dHZqZWVBM01iWjhveGRpSHgya0VFTUE#gid=0

I personally will probably be looking at a 4 way rotation around a City or Pool defender following gw 1

You see it as one of those signings you cannot turn down. Highest rated Barca youngster, wants to play consistent football, United midfield is fairly crap, 18M clause now because of less games, wants to get noticed before the wc, and thankfully Pep as Bayern has a great midfield too. Which is why Utd makes most sense unless Barca convince him to say.

Completely agree here. Obviously I want Barca to convince him to stay (not say) but if they can't, it's a brilliant signing. I'm surprised there aren't more sides interested.

I'm also surprised Barca hasn't looked into a loan deal though. Obviously not as ideal for United but it would suit Barca and Thiago's purposes just fine

                  The moment Ferguson retired yes.
Also according to the team above you've lost Rooney and Nani(even though he had a poor season he could make a difference). Ferdinand will be weaker, Carrick over performed last year.
You have to bring in new strong players each year, City didn't last year and they struggled.

True. Will have to see come Sep 1st. I really don't think Utd should sell Rooney unless he's desperate to leave. Vital player for the team.

How did Carrick over perform??? It's not possible to over preform.
He has been doing it for years and is only getting the recognition he deserves now.

Yep. Infact i'll go so far to say that Clevs did a lot of the dirty work Carrick had to do while playing alongside Scholes due to which he was given slightly more license.

Nope. I have faith in Clevs. Think he's a good player. Will get less game time but still an imp player. Good squad player to have too. He just had a poor second half last season. At other times, he's been good for us.

    b) What if he is used in a deal to get Ronnie?

      A) I want Rooney to stay. Though Rvp scored most of the goals last year still Rooney created alot!!!
+ Rooney will get lots of goals in a season without injuries!!!

      B) A swap deal would still cost United likely Rooney + 50-60million to land CR7.
i would be more happy if united get Bale tbh. paying 50-60m for a 28 year old and giving up rooney would not be good business!!!

      a) Not sure, its up to the player. Theres no doubt he is a fantastic player for us but if he wants to leave he will become more of a hindrance than anything.

Yes i want him to go, he doesn't want to play for us, he just wants money and he has been our downfall by relying on him. I would prefer to sell him abroad.

Secondly yes that would be the pefect scenario, although Ronaldo is 28, where as Bale is 24 i think

        Arteta fellaini
        Walcott wilshere cazorla
        Higuain

Depends on whether Wilshere is fit completely by the start of the season, otherwise I don't mind Ox being given a central role as well. He can do damage similar to what Bale did when shifted to the middle.

it's very easy to create these spreadsheets and predict what is gonna happen. But the thing about FPL is that anything can happen and i believe going with your gut is sometimes better with going with predictions based on facts that aren't relevant to the new season we are entering. Very close to all things Barca. Apparently also close to Thiago's family. Its clear the Mazinho met with United and Thiago has to make a decision now. I recommend following http://www.redcafe.net. There is a Thiago thread which is quite a funny read atm.

Its all about whether Barca can convince him to stay now.

so, with it looking more likely that Isco is Real bound, do we think Dzeko could nail down a spot this year. Navas is an assister/crosser rather than a scorer (look at Negredo's record as evidence), and this could be tailor made for Dzeko

    Yaya, Fernandinho
    Navas, Silva, Aguero
    Dzeko

Hmm.. I just can't see it sorry- as much as he would be fpl gold. Pellegrini is not a fan of total widemen and big target men... So I think he will prefer a passing 4231 such as:
      Yaya fernie
      Navas silva nasri
      Aguero

      Or
      Fernie Barry
      Navas yaya silva
      Aguero

or we code have the mods sticky it in the color of the alcohol being consumed. And would be immune to downvotes.

I'm thinking this for my defence rotation:

    Che, Liv, Whm, Ful, New.

    Giving

GW1. STO HUL CAR sun mci
GW2. WHM avl new mun ARS
GW3. STO FUL AVL new MUN
GW4. WBA avl swa sot eve
GW5. HUL SOT FUL EVE che

I reckon West ham will once again be solid as they've looked to tighten up further and some savvy transfers from Jol will see Fulham return to defensive form. Chelsea inclusion is based on DGW1 and despite backroom kerfuffle I think Newcastle will be more focused without Europe and multiple injuries at the back.

I've only gone up to five gameweeks as 95% of the top 1000 last year used Wildcard in the first three weeks as have I in the last two years.

      6.5 6 5 5 4.5

Going to be a tad bit expensive this one. Which is still ok if you get the returns.

I'm hoping to be able to get a Liverpool centre for 6 and hopefully a Fulham defender for 4.5. could be doable...

So approx 26m in defence and rotate defenders from two of the strongest defences in the league? Back to the drawing board 😉

    Lateriser:

I'm really intrigued by the prospect of Gardner this season, if listed as a defender.
Will still be on pens, and won't be more than 4.5 after Sunderland's weak defensive show last season.

Sorry if this is a little bit off topic. Haven't posted in awhile.
Last year I went with cheap rotation plans along my defence and keepers. I faired out ok up to my Jan WC but I never really got big numbers. The odd 60 here and there but nothing massive.
On my Jan WC I decided to strengthen my def with some bigger names and brought in Joe Hart as a permanent GK.
My scores got so much better from there on out! 70s 80s quite regularly and always felt a lot safer going into every GW.
My point being cheap rotations are good and when they work they're great, but investing a bit more of your budget there isn't a bad idea also. It worked for me at the latter half of this year and i'm strongly considering kicking things off this year in the way.
I'm sure this has been discussed over the last few weeks so apologies if i'm late to the party but just thought I'd share my thoughts.

There's been quite a lot of discussion around this, particularly in light of the interviews with some of the top scorers overall in the FPL who all seemed to go for the cheap defence option. As you say it's trying to pick the right ones though!

To be honest I'll prob start off the season with a cheap def again just so I can fit in some bigger names. I don't think I'll wait so long to switch things up this time though if i'm not getting the numbers I want. It was quite interesting last year watching my def thrive week in week out after the Jan switch up. Before that I felt lucky if i grabbed 14 or 15 points at the back with keeper

    Hi everyone.

First time here for a while as I've been fighting something worse than cheap defensive rotation, bloody cancer. I got a rare eye cancer named Ocular Melanoma and I've lost my left eye. Been home a few days and getting stronger.

Glad to see we have fixtures to get stuck into. No doubt some great s/sheets have been generated so far. Is there a sticky anywhere with the details? I did my own last year, but reading is hard work at the moment, so hoping to get a link or two to help out this poor one eyed knee jerker.

I saw the Berbagod / TW sheet, great work lads.

    Cheers.
