Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway made his third signing of the close season last week by acquiring Jerome Thomas on a free transfer. The 30-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a two-year deal and follows Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie to the club as Holloway strengthens his side in preparation for next term.

Speaking to the Palace official website, Thomas admitted he had a number of offers on the table but, following talks with the Eagles boss, was convinced he’ll have a part to play for in the season ahead:

“It was a case of me being on a free and weighing up my options. I wanted to stay at the top level, which is obviously the Premier League. I heard of Crystal Palace’s interest from January actually, and once they got promoted Ollie gave me a call when I was away on holiday, we had a good talk for about 45 minutes and after that conversation there wasn’t much doubt in my mind where I wanted to go. I hope I can bring a lot to the team. I’ve got experience of the Premier League and the gaffer’s going to give me the freedom to play how I want to play – my attacking game – which I haven’t been able to do for the last couple of seasons. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Thomas failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Gunners. Farmed out on loan to QPR between 2001-03, he featured just 10 times over two seasons and found the net three times before Charlton snapped him up for £100,000 back in 2004.

Established as a regular at The Valley, the winger went on to make 103 appearances, producing seven goals and four assists for the Championship club before making his way to then-Premier League Portsmouth on loan in August 2008. Thomas signed a permanent one-year deal just a few days later but a spine problem put paid to his game time and restricted him to a couple of appearances.

He was then snapped up by West Brom as a free agent the following summer and proceeded to play a pivotal part in the Baggies return to the top-flight, scoring seven times and providing a pair of assists in 27 Championship appearances. Thomas’ most impressive campaign in the Premier League arrived in 2010/11, where he managed three goals and seven assists in 33 appearances, but the installation of Roy Hodgson and, subsequently, Steve Clarke, proved detrimental to his prospects. The winger managed just one goal and three assists in 39 appearances over the past two seasons and was farmed out on loan to Leeds for a brief spell last term, producing a goal and pair of assists in six matches before returning to his parent club.

The Prospects

Judging by Thomas’ comments, it certainly seems that he’s been given assurance of game time over the season ahead as Holloway looks for a little extra top-flight experience in order to prevent Palace from slipping straight back into the Championship. While the Eagles boss fielded Yannick Bolasie on the left flank for the vast majority of last season’s matches, it was noticeable that he turned to youngster Jonathan Williams for the play-offs – a suggestion that he wasn’t quite settled on a regular for the position.

Alternatively, Thomas could be handed the role in “the hole†behind a lone forward in Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation for the season ahead and if he’s afforded the above-mentioned “freedomâ€, could prove a canny purchase by the Londoners. Yet to be listed by either the Sun Dream Team or the Sky Sports games, Thomas’ appeal for the 2013/14 is mainly down to a cut-price valuation of 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, making his perfect fifth midfielder material.

With virtually every other midfielder under 5.0 plying their trade in a more defensive position, Thomas’ popularity is likely to take an unexpected hike as we analyse the Player Lists for this season’s Raheem Sterling or Jason Puncheon. While there will surely be more alternatives to come over the next few weeks as clubs bolster their squads, the likes of Villa’s Aleksandar Tonev, Southampton’s Victor Wanyama and Hull trio Robbie Brady, Ahmed Elmohamady or Roberto Koren (all priced at 5.0) could appeal to those eyeing up a midfield rotation partner for the former Baggies man, with the latter two offering a solid option over the first seven Gameweeks.

Essentially, then, we’re not expecting Thomas to light up the top-flight on a weekly basis but at that price, he could prove decent value for money if Holloway is true to his word and hands him a regular role.

PICKING YOUR INITIAL SQUAD AND PRICE CHANGES

Protecting your bank is key in this game
Prices fluctuate wildly in the first few weeks of the season , and if you have a poor first gameweek you could well be set on losing money on a number of players . Either that or be forced into multiple hits or wildcard.
There will be big bandwagons , that can be relied upon . One of the newboys will shine and suddenly become a must have. Will you be ready?

Here are some tips to help ensure you are on the right side of the price war.

    1) Make sure your players are nailed on

    2) Cheap defenders and keepers generally do not drop in price. Even if they only score a point or two ,it wont matter , its all they are expected to get. But if a more expensive defender flops . He will be sold in droves to free up cash elsewhere , and you looking at price drops.

    3) Always check the second fixture with your mids and attackers. Because if they flop in their first game and are away to City in GW 2 watchout

    4) Target players who are generally considered to be underpriced , there will be less of a reaction if they fail in GW1 . Avoid players like Courtinho who are generally seen as expensive.. If he blanks GW1 people will be jumping ship onto whichever mid scored a goal

Summary , if you keep your defence and keepers cheap , you wont need to waste an early transfer on them. If you select undervalued mids and strikers there will also be less pressure. Try and ensure their next three fixtures are reasonable. Protecting your bank is key in this game

protecting your bank - sounds like a decent plan. But what will happen if there is another Rafael? His price went soaring from 5.5 and he was the man to get. With that kind of backline of yours, you need 2 transfers to catch up and bring the guy in.

Same boat... Demel, Clyne and Davies paired with Enrique i had almost all of last season... spent about 5-6 on another defender that was rotated depending on who had the best fixtures and it worked a treat

I'll be doing similar this season too

Okay, i understand. So what's your opinion on Coleman? Do you think he's underpriced thus a good pick? at 5.0 & OOP, he has the potential to rise if he performs greatly. Would you spend a bit on him or wait until he's justified the extra 0.5/1m?

Totally agree, the first few weeks are so volatile with transfers you can get priced out of moves real quick. I do believe this down to loads of casual players just making transfers with no forethought. These players usually give up after a couple of months but their crazy knee-jerking in those first few weeks has a major affect on prices.

I would add, dont be afraid to take a couple of points hits early on to get on the form, and therefore rising in price, player.

Yep just like the post above mentioned... The overpriced low scoring players will be dropped for the under priced high scoring players so they can afford the big name striker who scored over the other big name striker!

Gotta be on the ball and spending points at the start to stay up... the .1's you gain here will be worth something in the long run to get that proper job team

Great post.. These gems are dead zone gold.

Saying that, I am of the opinion that picking good value nailed on starters is essential but not with a view to protecting the bank especially. For me I just feel they'll bring back the most points in the long run. I also factor in fixtures heavily.

The best conclusions can be reached by many different routes!

      I would add:

      A) avoid rock bottom priced players - if they drop you have nowhere to go

      B) have a spread of different prices - if your midfield is priced 12 9.5 8 7 6 it gives you more options to juggle transfers than if it's 12 8 7.5 7.5 7.5

And most importantly C) pick the players who are going to score well and avoid the one's who are going to score badly...

    Morning all,

Following on from Jontys' Devils and Angels, I have tried to create some stat tables to highlight potential players that should benefit from the new bonus system.

I believe these are pretty good as it is highlighting why certain players are priced higher than we expected. Without naming names, player 6 on Attacking Instincts, player 9 on Ball Playing Generals (This guy has amazing stats and bring him right back into my thinking) and player 8 on Defenders. Honourable mentions to Papiss Cisse and Bryan Ruiz who just missed out on these tables, two more players that people may have thought were over priced.

The main criterias are listed in the description area of the tables but the consistent theme is based around the pass completion bonus points. Firstly it states that a minimum of 30 passes so the first filter was to find those player that regularly would hit that total and after that applied the pass completion percentage on top of that. The other main features are the basics, CS and Goals as these are still the main way of getting bonus points.

My conclusions from it all are that nothing much has changed. Defenders need to defend while attacking players need to score. Simple really. The only improvement is that in tighter games the holding Midfielder will come into play. This belief round the boards that centre backs and holding midfielders are going to take over the bonus system I believe is false as there are not many that have the clearances, blocks and interceptions to rack up the points. You need 8 of any combination of these to get 1 point. What is interesting is the open play crosses, there is far more chance of 3 of these for 1 points happening. Another noticeable is actually who avoids the minus points. The last stat I'll highlight are recoveries. These are pretty much spread evenly across a whole side. I thought that this would be another benefit to a defender but it isn't.

Also, it is worth noting who pops up in more than one table as these people are going to be the main benefactors to the new system.

    Attacking Instincts

    Ball Playing Generals

    Defenders

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/2807/

I can't name players and go into details why I think they should return to our thoughts when selecting our squad but I hope these tables do the talking for me.

    Cheers 🙂

Great tables and follows on nicely from my angels and devils ones. What is clear is that all players will have to do their job well (ie score goals as an attacker/make blocks etc as a defender) and do more to get bonus. It'll be interesting how it pans out.

Does go anyway towards showing how often these players are actually likely to achieve baps. A break down of some typical results last year would be ten times more useful than this. In a 1-0 Arsenal victory would Arteta have actually got baps?

This is what I'd like to see - individual matches are what matter, when you group them all together it smooths out the spikes which are the key to actually picking up bonus points.

Someone convince me that playing 5-3-2 is a ridiculous idea..

    Current team:

    Boruc/Mannon

    Collins Alcaraz Mertesacker Kompany Kaboul

    Bale Hazard Walcott (Koren Thomas)

Aguero Sturridge (Maynard / 4.5 bench fodder)

Before commenting without thinking about it - I know that 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 are the standard formations...but I am thinking that there is much better value in the 4.5m - 5.5m defenders than there are are in the budget midfielders/forewards, (and I get to play with 5 big hitters in midfield/forward lines)

It's certainly interesting but ultimately not a great idea for one reason.

      Flexibility.

What happens if one of your forwards gets injured? What if you have to get RVP? You're stuck with those funds laboring at the back.

I highly doubt anything but 3 at the back will be effective this year, especially with the trend that cleansheets are becoming scarcer.

Well if a forward gets injured I transfer in another one? I have the two 5mill sub midfielders to play in a pinch as well.

As for RVP I am just not interested (maybe will pay for it ha).

You might have a point about cleanies becoming scarcer though!

Why so little love for 5.5 million Anelka?

West Brom not exactly blessed with top quality front men. They did fork out quite a few pounds to secure him so they are unlikely to utilise him as Long's back up

He has a proven FPL track record when at smaller clubs Bolton, Man City ( When they were small)

They normally play 4231, can't see him starting centrally ahead of Long so if he does it'll be on the wing.

Didn't play top level football last season, is getting on and will probs be an expensive benchwarmer imo.

With my reply fail or point?

If point, why do you think he'll start ahead of Long?

No, I wasn't aware it was a reply fail and thought you where talking about Thomas.

I agree with your option. Long should start ahead of anelka.

    1. Total Score vs. Value:

If we have a finite amount of capital to spend on assets then logically we want to squeeze the most out of each pound ew spend.

However, in this game we also need to balance this idea of 'value' against 'scoring the most points' possible...

For example, Joey O'Brien is great in that he nets you 25ppm but, he doesn't crack the Top 50 in Total Score.

Conversely, Van Persie will garner you double O'Brien's points but, won't crack the Top 75 in Value at a modest 19ppm.

So my question is "How do we best balance these two metrics (Total Score vs. Value) when selecting our squad?"

      Different.

Like it though. Tiote for pretty much anyone. Yellow card magnet and pretty much no attacking upside

just noticed Given backup keeper. he not playing in the prem league.

defence struggles but so does every team with that sort of attack. Kaboul/Dawson or Colelman over Toure

          Thanks for the feedback!

Your right with Tiote - yellow card magnet i'll look at some1 else.

Given is risky but its the only way i can squeeze that attack in. Will keep for now still loads of time in transfer window yet

What's the best value for money 3 defender combination that you can come up with where 1 of them has a great fixture every week?

    I'm currently on: palace/hull/Norwich (12.5m)

Can anyone beat that with any bargain players from better sides?

SOT, WHM & NOR. 13.5 & you won't have to worry about wasting a transfer on 4mil defenders who don't fit the rotation after their dropped / injured.

Heck, NOR & WHM may even net you some pts!

Could any of you give me your opinion/some advice on my current defence, I am aiming for a low budget defence with big hitting forward players:

    Mignolet, Boruc
    Nastacic, Mertesacker, Clyne, Collins, Turner

Others I have been thinking about are: Distin, Davies and Cuellar...are Nasty and Merte necessary?

That's hardly a low budget defense.

Nasty and Mert are both good picks. Also, you could do well with one or two 4.0s. Turner at Cardiff is a good pick, and so is Parr or Chester.
