Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

I must admit, I'm impressed by the changes to the BAPS system and the pricing.

Finally, those less fashionable mid-priced defenders may flourish, so straight away we have the 'uber' vs mid-priced vs 'luxury' debate. No doubt we'll all have a closer look at how the points are allocated over the season, but perhaps the likes of Carrick and Arteta will be rewarded too in their much maligned defensive midfield berths, vying for our attention in what appears to be a very competitively priced midfield.

There's a plethora of mid priced options to choose from and I'm glad that both RVP and Bale came in at their respective prices - there should be some real dilemmas regarding how we're going to set up our teams. No doubt some will go with both and still have a respectable team to boot, some may forgo one or even both and spread the wealth elsewhere. I genuinely feel this season is one where you could potentially omit either ultra-big hitter and still end up with an extremely competitive team.

As for the forwards, I'm surprised at Countinho's slightly overpiced 9.0 valuation, but Lambert and Benteke are priced extremely well. RVW and Bony's prices are perfect; it makes taking a punt (or bandwagoning) on them more of a risk, which again, should only add to the variation in teams. If Mata and Rooney do end up crossing paths as they pay at the M6 Toll Booth, we could be in for yet another twist.

Should be a great season ahead. Does anyone have the FFScout league code?

          No worries. 🙂

It makes the likes of Jagielka, Mert great options. Looking at the criteria it looks like Arteta will do really well for bonus in tight low scoring games.

Koscielny but I think its very close, wouldnt say one has much more potential than the other.

Kosc based on him having just over half of Merts gametime but picked up 11 BPs and got 2 goals 1 assist compared to Mert 3 goals 8 baps

Mert for me. I had him in, but I had to downgrade to Kolo to free up some cash. I think Pool should be good for CS for the first few weeks, and i reckon he might get some starts, Rodgers doesn't seem to have faith in Skrtel. What do you reckon?

Also, keen to get your thoughts on the Sunderland keeper situation? Currently have Boruc/Foster, but a downgrade there means I can upgrade Kolo, or Turner to Clyne

        Thanks everyone, still undecided.

Kolo is a good punt i think. All depends on whether Liverpool by anyone else. I'd say as of now he'll start the season with Agger. Skrtel seems very much in the dog house. I think Westwood will play, has impressed when i've watched him, and reckon Mannone was signed just as competition/cover. But he can easily be dropped if he has some bad games so watch out.

I'm particularly looking forward to having a tinker with the new KPI tables. I think there is something to be said about players who end the season poorly. I seem to remember Silva doing badly in the second half of the season two seasons ago then that poor form continuing into the new season.

There needs to be some analysis done on this because certain players such as Lambert and even RVP dropped off a bit at the end of last season. I wonder if this could continue into this season? Some proper analysis will be useful to help draw some statistical conclusions.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With so many good 4.5-5.5 defensive options in the FPL game and a new bonus point system that is more likely to reward centre backs in that price range is there now no future in the uber defensive strategy, of only selecting cheap defenders.

Or are there any ultra cheap 4.0m defenders that you think could clean up under the new bonus system?

I don't know if any of the nailed on 4.0s (Parr, Ward, Chester, BTurner, etc) will fare well under the new baps system in the Premiership--really none of us do. But I think the real question is whether the difference between the points those ubers get and the points the 4.5-5.5ers get is more or less than the extra points you earn by being able to buy more expensive attacking players. Put more concretely, if getting Parr and Chester makes it possible to buy RVP over Aguero, are, say, Coleman and Collins going to outscore Parr and Chester by more than RVP outscores Aguero? When you consider that Parr and Chester will usually be on the bench, I think I might take the chance because I expect RVP to score much better and more consistently than Aguero.

The optimal way of distributing funds is of course at the core of this, but this season there seems to be a hell of a lot of value to be had in the 4.5-5.5 category that we simply haven't had in previous seasons

Personally, I don't see that it makes a difference (to me).

If I'm getting a cheap defender it's with the intention of having a decent chance of getting clean sheets from them. If the defender gets a clean sheet he has the same chance of bonus points as a pricier defender.

Also, as has been pointed out elsewhere, I'm yet to be convinced that there'll be a big shift in bonus point allocations under the new system. Sure, defenders average better under the new system, but I assume midfielders and strikers will still see more spikes in their points and hoover up the bonus points when they score. I imagine defenders will only really benefit in very low scoring games.

I really don't see many clean sheets for the 4m defenders as they all come from promoted clubs (correct me if I'm wrong), who are widely expected to ship goals.

I reckon I'll start the season with a Palace and a Hull defender (and Marshall).

I won't be relying on them week in, week out but it would be foolish to imagine they won't keep any clean sheets. I know predicting them is the hard part but look at the last couple of seasons - people are now filling their teams with West Ham, Southampton and Norwich defenders due to their performances.

We knew about West Ham though - Big Sam was always going to have a defensively solid team.

Plus Norwich and Southampton have at least one season's experience in the PL, hence why they are so popular. Plus Norwich had a lot of success last season defensively.

I see what you're saying, but this year I'm not backing any of the three promoted teams defensively. I'm happy to be proved wrong and dowgrade to some 4m bargains after a few weeks though!

To avoid a spammy repost: I think the new bonus system should really spice up the debate of 'uber' vs 'mid-price' vs 'luxury' - which in turn should have an interesting effect on how we allocate our budget elsewhere. With the plethora of mid-priced midfield options available, we could be in for an extremely interesting season.

Hats off to FPL, they've priced all the assets competitively and the new bonus points* may reward some under-appreciated players such as mid-priced defenders and defensive midfielders a lot more.

Quick question - does anyone know what the FPL code is? Am I being a little bit slow? Should I go have gone to SpecSavers?

*the concern is of course, the new bonus system may reward players for blocks etc., they may still continue to lose out (perhaps by a very narrow margin) in individual games to the more explosive, attacking performances.

I assume this has been discussed to the core already and I am late in joining the party, but what are people's reactions on that Rooney bid. I think it was the right thing to reject the offer but if Chelsea comes up with a better offer in the shape of more cash and Mata which I hope they do, I think United should avail the offer. Get Mata and Fellaini with the extra cash and I think the hole left by Rooney could be filled. Opinions?

Rooney being undervalued on here - not at OT thankfully, he might be an utter knob but he's still a world class striker. Think Moyes will only sell for cash and won't want to sell to PL rival

Exactly my point. Rooney is greatly undervalued here and not to forget English players prices are over inflated. I think Mata + 20 million will be fair and it would be hard to reject it. As much as I like Rooney.

I think Mata plus 10M for Rooney is a fair deal for both parties considering Chelsea are doing the poaching. Rooney wants out and Utd get a fantastic proven player to replace him plus a not insignificant amount of cash.

I think they should have taken the offer and ran. Rooney was poor last season and seems like he wasnt happy/wanted out. Mata would perform much better in my opinion and would be of much more value to the team, + a handy extra 10 million. Mistake imo.

Here's the thing, Rooney is vastly underrated and undervalued here. Last season was probably his worst at Old Trafford but he still got 12 goals and 10 assists. That's pretty good for an average player but for Rooney that's bad. Shows the quality that's expected of him and what he is capable of producing.

He didnt have a bad start but as the season went on his perfromances declined (not sure if the stats back this up). You have to ask the question, if Rooney stays on next season will he score even less than 12 goals and 10 assists.. which I think could happen. I agree hs can be an excellent player and has been brilliant for UTD but it is time for him to move on imo and the team will move on without him. Mata would be a great addition to the team.

    Oh RVP 😮

Judging by the RMT's seems many (most) on here are going without. Certainly understand that and makes for a more balanced team. However for me the one nagging issue is how to get him if he starts firing from GW1.

Ditching him is easy and you have the choice of literally any striker (plus cash) if he looks to be off the boil for whatever reason. Trying to wedge a 14m player into a team with 0.5m in the bank, forget it.

Therefore today I'm massively swinging in favour of starting with him 😕

Agreed, but the other issue is ownership, currently around 33% I believe. if he starts fast (and are without him), then it'll be a long season long slog climbing the ranks. If he doesn't at least you know many are in the same boat and overall rank shouldn't take too much of a hit.

I think many plan to WC after GW3 and get him in..he doesn't have the best fixtures in the beginning...(not that he cares though)....but there are other good captain choices for those weeks(GW1: HAzard (dgw), GW2:Aguero(cardiff) GW3:Aguero(HULL)

GW4 you want RvP home to crystal palace....so therefore i am going to WC before that week..

FPL should be basing their classification on recent history, not second guessing where they think players will play.

It should be automatic, if a player plays the majority of his games in a certain position the previous season, then that is where he should be classified.

He has played most of his life as an Attacking Midfielder, including almost most games when he was at Celta and certainly every game I saw of him when he was at Rayo Vallecano.

He spent - at best - half a season as a forward at Swansea, mainly due to their lack of options. Now Bony's arrived, he's unlikely to remain as a striker. Furthermore his move forwards was not particularly fruitful for him or his team. The fact that he is most comfortable in his Attacking Midfield role is something which has been mentioned by both player and manager.

Michu has excellent potential this season, coming in as a 9.0 Midfielder. Playing with a robust and powerful center forward like Bony should give him plenty of space to exploit. If Bony plays anything like he did in the Eredivisie, he'll certainly keep the opposition defence's attention away from Michu.

We're still not seriously considering to give the likes of Lucas/Carrick/Arteta a spot in our midfield though?

Time will tell whether the new BPS will have an effect on this.

Still, I do agree that the game is flourishing with good attacking midfielders I would love to have in my team.

Sounds like Papiss Cisse's days at Toon could be numbered.

Good on him though; Wonga et al are truly horrendous companies, I can't believe such loan-sharking is actually legal. Not surprised Newcastle don't mind taking money from them with Ashley in charge though. He already sold part of the cluc's soul with the ridiculous St James' Park renaming

nothing wrong with stadium re-naming. Football has moved on, it's a business now, and new business streams need to be found.

Ashley replaced the name of one of the most historic grounds in England with an advertisement for his own drossy sports outlet. It's pretty ruthless captialism if nothing else. Sure, they have to find ways to compete, but I bet most Geordies would rather retain their proud heritage then completely sell out for a few more million a year.

the prices that are charged to fans to go to matches in England is a much bigger disgrace that selling the rights for naming the stadiums.

Ashley has the morals of a cheese sandwich, his conduct in his quest to buy up the clothing/fashion trade shows that. Like most things, life will turn round and take a massive bite out of his overly plump erse.

imagine you are a single mother with 2 kids on benefits...your boyfriend comes into your flat, steals your weekly cash and drinks it or shoots it up his arm...you have 6 days to go with no way to buy food for your children...

but for £20 you can feed them for a week

you've not explained how you're going to feed your children...any answer that fails to address this problem is worth diddly-squat

lets say the offer is you borrow £20 this week and pay back £30 next week

what if she had 3 children one of whom was 6 months old?

why don't you set up Bank of PPSR?...your business plan is to lend short-term cash to people in a crisis...you charge 25% APR...good luck paying your debt collectors!!!

the high-street banks don't offer the service these people need...that's the problem...and if you made Wonga's business plan illegal people would just resort to illegal loan sharks who'd treat them even worse

that's why there's no support from the government for the action you're proposing...while your head is buried in the Guardian they have to deal with real-world problems
