Our fourth article focussing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List is rolled out this evening. With the Goalkeepers analysis followed by articles on the Budget and Mid-Price backline options, we this time turn to the premium priced defenders on offer for the season ahead:

Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge means the Chelsea backline is currently a source of uncertainty for Fantasy managers. While Petr Cech is nailed-on in goal and Ashley Cole (6.5) looks certain to retain the left-back role, the attacking potential offer up by both David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic would be preferable – with both players setting us back 6.5, though, it’s very much a case of “wait and see” over the pre-season. There’s the hope that Cesar Azpilicueta, at 6.0, can nail down the right-back berth – having produced six assists in his debut season, the Spaniard’s contribution down the flank could prosper in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Alternatively, Mourinho could reinstall the similarly priced John Terry (6.0) as a regular at the heart of his defence once again.

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines has been handed the highest valuation of any defender after racking up 177 points in the season gone by. At 7.5, the Everton full-back could be moved to the left of Roberto Martinez’s midfield in a 3-4-3 for the season ahead – while this would undoubtedly further his points potential, Seamus Coleman, at 5.0, could offer superior value in spite of Baines’ spot-kicks and set-piece duties. Indeed, a mooted move to United would likely see him stripped of penalties, with a decrease in corners and set-pieces also on the cards should he join up with David Moyes again. Surprisingly, despite his superb season, Baines would have ranked as the fifth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System (BPS) – he was top for bonus in the old EA PPI based system, by comparison.

Liverpool trio Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique all come in at 6.0. All three exceed 130+ points last time out, with Enrique just eight points behind Johnson despite playing seven games less – of the trio, it was Agger who would have finished highest in new BPS, though. When applied to last season’s games, the Dane finished third top for defenders in the BPS, with Johnson in ninth – this could well be significant, given Agger picked up just eight bonus points in the old system in 2012/13. A regular role for the 5.0 priced Kolo Toure would see many set their targets on the Ivorian, though, while both Liverpool keepers also come in at 5.5.

Vincent Kompany (6.5) remains the costliest backline option at City, with full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy both coming in at 6.0. The question remains whether the Etihad side will remain as resolute at the back with new boss Manuel Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive – if City fail to mirror the 18 clean sheet returns and mere 34 goals against harvested under Roberto Mancini’s final year at the helm, Matija Nastasic (5.5) is a less-expensive gamble.

Elsewhere in Manchester, United have four defenders priced at 6.0 or over. Providing Baines doesn’t make the Old Trafford switch, Patrice Evra looks the most reliable in terms of game time – the Frenchman remains firmly ahead of Alex Buttner in the left-back pecking order and while he’s the costliest backline option for David Moyes’ side at 6.5, his four goals and six assists in 2012/13 highlight Evra’s attacking appeal. Intriguingly, similar to Baines, he doesn’t far quite as well in the BPS – he was ranked second for PPI last year but would have been seventh highest backline option under the BPS scoring system. As witnessed towards the final few months of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, Phil Jones’ (6.0) versatility could prove crucial, with the former Blackburn man offering the Red Devils options at right-back, centre-half and central midfield but we’ve yet to see where he fits into Moyes’ plans. Rafael and Nemanja Vidic also come in at 6.0 – the right-back could well be a secure starter under the new manager and if Vidic can keep injury-free, he’s another who could thrive under the new Bonus Point System.

Finally, Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are the last two defenders in our analysis. The former’s consistency of starts, in addition to six assists from the previous year harvested 116 points but, at 6.0, he’s likely to convince few Fantasy managers into taking a punt, with better value available elsewhere. Vertonghen started last season at 6.5 but has risen to 7.0 this time round, having produced five goals and three assists in his debut campaign at White Hart Lane. The Belgian’s all-round game looks set to be significantly rewarded by the new Bonus Points System – not only would he have finished top defender and number one Tottenham player (by a considerable margin over Gareth Bale) in 2012/13, Vertonghen would have been second overall only to Robin Van Persie in the BPS rankings.

Indeed, the comparison with Bale is particularly key and suggests the Welshman may struggle to earn maximum bonus with such regularity – a crucial factor when deciding on the armband. Last season Bale bettered his team-mate by 709 points to 479 points in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and subsequently racked up 50 bonus points to Vertonghen’s 12 but under the new system, the Belgian’s all-round game see him come out top by 289 points to 209. We’ll have a more detailed analysis of the brand new Bonus Points System in an upcoming article.

Hope you all like reading this, as you may know that I don't do too many long post!
Here is my top 5 summer signings!
    5. Maarten Stekelenburg
Another excellent signing by Fulham is Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. The experienced Dutchman may have fallen out of favour with Serie A side Roma, but he is still first choice for his country and was another player attracting serious attention from Arsenal this summer.

The 30-year-old is the ideal replacement in goal for veteran ‘keeper Mark Schwarzer, who left the club on a free at the end of the 2012/13 season

    4. Kolo Toure

Despite failing to rediscover his best form from his Arsenal days since joining Manchester City in 2008, Kolo Toure’s versatility and experience should make him a good signing for Liverpool, even if only as a squad player. The 32-year-old has won the Premier League twice in his career and his know-how could be invaluable in a young Liverpool squad that will be missing veteran Jamie Carragher after his retirement.

    3. Jose Canas
Swansea enjoyed great success in the transfer market last summer, with manager Michael Laudrup’s knowledge of Spanish football bringing in some bargain signings in Michu and Chico, two players who were among the best in their positions in the Premier League in 2012/13, and who only cost a combined fee of £4million.

Joe Canas will arrive from Real Betis on a free transfer, and could be another excellent addition. The 26-year-old is a solid defensive midfield player who looks ideally suited for Premier League football, and could give the Swans something a little extra in defensive cover from the middle of the park.

    2. Fernandinho
Fernandinho looked like a highly impressive player in the Champions League this season, when he played for Shakhtar Donetsk against the likes of Chelsea and Juventus. His form attracted attention from a lot of big clubs, but Manchester City won the race for his signature, signing him for around £28million. The strong and skillful midfielder should be an upgrade on the likes of Gareth Barry and Javi Garcia, giving City a better chance of competing for the Premier League title again, with some slow and sloppy displays from their midfield pairing all too often in 2012/13.

    1. Andre Schurrle

One of the most exciting prospects coming out of German football is Andre Schurrle, who ended a long transfer saga by finally signing for long-time admirers Chelsea earlier this month.

The winger, who can also play upfront, scored 13 goals and provided 8 assists for Bayer Leverkusen in 2012/13, and will give the Blues something a little different in their attacking midfield, with the talented trio of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar all playing in a similar style behind the main striker. Schurrle certainly looks at the moment to be the signing of the summer, and this top talent could make all the difference in the destination of the Premier League title in 2013/14.

under new management and pellegrini style might work well. Playing with much better players. His pace will be beneficial and could tear defences apart, has players around him to slot the crosses he puts in.

    Re: spam downvoting.

Is it necessary to have a downvote option? "Bad posts" would get 0 votes. In a small thread navigation is not really a problem regardless of votes. In a big thread you'd get to all posts that have upvotes within them before the "bad posts" if you sort by votes. It will even out for user reputation as well after a short while.

Just a thought. Working with software development I know that it could take time to look into ways to avoid abuse. Could also hamper the functionality, for instance it would be annoying if you can only upvote x amount of posts in y amount of minutes.

Its something we'd consider but downvoting does help us quickly detect comments that perhaps need moderator attention. It allows the community to have something other than "report abuse" that some may see as a little extreme to flag something that they feel is perhaps detrimental to the discussion or community.

Sure, but he's really old and coming off a pretty terrible season.

Yes, I meant last season though. Lukaku is a much better striker than Anelka and he couldn't nail down a spot for WBA.

Paul raises a very valid point with Bale as it wasn't like it could be explained with spikes in Vertonghen or Bale performances. Both were very consistent last season. Make me consider Bale value a bit. There's also a second stat we should take out of his statement. RVP was number 1 in the bonus system. Just saying 😉

For the members among us, I had a bash at the bonus point system and came up with these. Think they're pretty good as they highlight reasons for certain players (Vertonghen) are priced higher than we initially thought.

Walcott v Cazorla, slim pickings between them but many seem to be favouring Walcott over Santi.

Is it just a price issue with Wally being 0.5 cheaper? Or more of a question of consistency? Santi rarely disappears during a game and always has pops on goal - with a full season behind him now where he's definitely impressed, what are general thoughts on him FPL-wise this season? Keep in mind Santi would seem to benefit more from the new bonus system.

If anything we have seen that santi is quite fixture proof, showing his qualities even against the top sides. Def think he will be an improved animal this season. Definitely one battle to watch in pre season, Wally vs santi that is.

Goal threat, with Walcott maybe playing behind a main striker I think that is what pushes people towards theo. Now if Caz rather than Arteta took the penalties then Santi would come out on top. Thing is they will share the points pretty evenly.

Yup there was that fruitful period where Walcott was playing upfront or just behind giroud but after he signed his contract, he was shifted out to the right. Haven't had the chance to look at stats but in the post contract period, I think santi went toe to toe with Walcott in fpl terms.

Agree that their points will possibly play out evenly, will prob be a question of superior form. Guess will have to watch them closely over pre season. But given santi a heavy involvement in creating chances for himself and others, there's definitely that advantage there. Walcott has a rep for being wasteful (sth he definitely improved on last season) but that might tip the scale to Santi's favor.

        Possibly!

Bonus is one thing, max of 3 points each match etc. but in regular fpl scoring points, would you think either player will outshine one?

To me, santi being slightly more premium suggests that slight advantage has been priced in - but for picking a starting 15...is that 0.5m that could be better spent elsewhere?

I've had a couple of draft attempts since the launch on Monday, and I've been determined to stick with Coutinho in Midfield. I've not seen too many RMT's with him in. Am I getting too attached to a player that doesn't seem to be capturing too much attention?

I was thinking Coutinho as well... but, Coutinho costs 0.5 less than Hazard and Walcott. He costs the same as Silva and Sturridge (yes I know, not the same position, but attacker from same team). That's what worries me about picking him.

I know what you mean. I can afford Bale, Coutinho, Hazard and RVP, but I feel there is more potential with both Silva & Walcott. What I keep telling myself is Coutinho played 923 minutes and returned 3 goals and 7 assists last season - he still looks quite appealing to me.

Very appealing from the little we've seen, but he's relatively unproven and to me there are certain doubts about the formation for LFC and his role. If he was given license to roam in a #10 role, that's a different story than playing on the left of a 4-3-3.

Seriously, let's drop the obsession with voting. It's a minor mechanic that helps users find good stuff - it's not the number of votes but the rep of the vote and serial downvoters are likely to have low rep and therefore have very little, if any, impact.

    Mark,

Is it possible to see how many times an individual has downvoted?

I strongly believe the voting should be transparent.

Perhaps every time someone downvotes, they should be made to give an explanation as to why.

If there are individuals that are consistently downvoting other posters, they should be dealt with.

The voting does nothing other than rate each individual post.

There is no accumulation to get to the next scout level.

We were lied too about that.

There's no lies Ronh...voting is impacting on stuff as it affects the rep which in turn effects the impact of that person's vote. Long term posters with higher rep have more impact with their vote. In terms of users raising levels that does come into effect but the level thresholds are balanced behind the scenes to make sure it doesn't happen too quickly. We may well get read of rep levels, however - the badges perhaps serve little purpose.

I think that opens up a further can of worms. I will consider changing the voting options, though. Please don't get hung up on down votes, in the meantime - their impact is minimal and a quick email to us or even an abuse report will give us the heads up so we can explore and act.

Well there aren't really any stringent rules on what we are supposed to use it for. I could dislike everything a certain person says every time they say something and downvote accordingly. Just as I could for someone whose posts I find interesting regularly. It's all subjective innit.

We've two options when we find fishy stuff going on. Remove the impact their vote has on the rep of others or disable voting. We've used both. Very recently.

Always play 3 at the back, downgrade B. Arfa and Lampard to get another good striker so you'll at least have a 3-5-2.

Everyone's dilemma. After the success of midfielders last term it seems the way to go. My current midfield is Bale/Walcott/Mata/Coutinho/Lucas. Spot the odd one out!
