Having analysed the rule changes and assessed the prices of Goalkeepers and Defenders, our third article focussing on the Sky Sports game takes a look at the Midfielders, as Fantasy managers begin to assemble their squads ahead of next month’s kick-off:

Budget Bracket

In terms of cheap likely starters, Sunderland new boy Cabral and Fulham’s summer signing Derek Boateng have been slapped with a 4.1 price tag – the pair should benefit from the tackling bonus rule at least and help free up the cash to be splashed elsewhere. Hull’s Stephen Quinn (42 apps, three goals, six assists last season) is a mainstay in the middle of the par under Steve Bruce and perhaps the best all-round option of the three.

In general, much of the budget bracket is filled with fringe players, though the promoted sides offer some regular starters. Cardiff’s Bo-Kyung Kim (4.5) became a key player for the Championship winners as the season unfolded last term, while Crystal Palace’s 4.6 priced Owen Garvan offers a more attacking option; likely to be fielded in “the hole†by Holloway, he produced four goals and six assists in 2012/13. Hull wing-back pair Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are also listed at 4.6; Brady’s set-piece duties helped him accrue four goals and 13 assists last season and he could also be fielded in “the hole†if Steve Bruce shifts from 3-5-2 to 4-4-1-1. Man City’s forgotten winger Scott Sinclair (4.7) could be one to monitor if the rumours of a potential loan move to West Brom come to fruition.

At 4.8, there’s a couple of promoted options who produced decent returns from last time out. Hull’s Robert Koren (nine goals, five assists) looks an option in “the holeâ€, with spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces and corners in his locker, while Aron Gunnarson’s eight goals and five assists highlight his appeal in the Cardiff central midfield – he’s struggling to shake off a shoulder injury in time for the kick-off, though. Villa new boy Aleksandar Tonev could prove a snip at this price if he’s handed a role behind a lone striker. Staying in the sub-5.0 bracket, Charlie Adam looks set to be an integral part of Mark Hughes’ Stoke side next term and will likely be handed a key role in central midfield – with set-pieces and corners in his locker, 4.9 looks tempting. Leon Britton offers plenty of bonus pass potential, if he remain immune to Michael Laudrup’s rotational whims in the Swansea midfield, though Tomas Rosicky (4.9) only looks an option if Arsene Wenger fails to spend in the summer.

Mid-Price Options

Newcastle’s Yoan Gouffran may be one to watch. Coming in at just 5.1, he grabbed a couple of goals after being fielded in “the hole†towards the end of the season and could be a bargain for the Magpies; he could potentially move to the left of a front three if Alan Pardew decides to move to 4-3-3. Due to Papiss Cisse’s dispute with the club, Gouffran was fielded up front in a friendly against Motherwell in midweek and managed to find the net. If Sandro can steer clear of injury this year, his style looks ideal for the bonus points ruling – a price of 5.1 may appeal for the Tottenham man, though Mousa Dembele comes in at 5.8 for Andre Villas-Boas’ side and may offer a little more attacking potential if Spurs shift to 4-3-3. West Ham’s Mark Noble, at 5.2, has spot-kicks and set-pieces to fall back on and comes in at 0.5 less than team mate Matt Jarvis.

Aaron Ramsey’s role in the Arsenal double-pivot should offer the Welshman greater chance of passing bonus points – a price of 5.8 is relatively cheap if he remains a regular under Arsene Wenger, though Jack Wilshere, at 6.2, may offer far greater potential at the Emirates if he’s selected to play in “the hole†behind a lone forward. Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa has the potential to be a real steal at 5.9 – if he can steer clear of injury, the Frenchman’s cost looks hugely enticing here.

Southampton duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Gaston Ramirez will both set you back 6.2 and both appeal for differing reasons. Schneiderlin’s passing and tackling bonus potential somewhat offsets his overall lack of offensive contribution, while the latter hoping to steer clear of injury to flourish in his favoured position behind Rickie Lambert – with just five goals and three assists last term, there’s plenty of room for improvement. Saints new boy Victor Wanyama has also been added as a mid-price option – at just 5.9, he looks a key first-team player in the season ahead.

United trio Ashley Young 6.0, Antonio Valencia (6.4) and Nani (6.8) will be hoping to recapture their form after a dire season last time out and could be given a fresh start on the flanks under new boss David Moyes. Similarly, Samir Nasri (6.3) could be a bargain if he can cement a role under new City boss Manuel Pellegrini, while Kevin Mirallas, at 6.5, has the potential to thrive as an out of position forward if, as anticipated, he’s fielded on the right of a front three under Roberto Martinez at Everton. With six goals and three assists from the right in a 4-4-1-1 in 2012/13, Mirallas may well step up another level under the Spaniard’s guidance. Spurs new boy Paulinho will be one to watch. Many suspect Villas-Boas will move to 4-3-3 this season and hand the Brazilian the role as the most advanced central midfielder – at 6.6, he’s already on plenty radars.

Staying under the 7.0 price mark, both James Morrison (6.7) and Kevin Nolan (6.8) will be looking to benefit from their roles in “the hole†once again – Morrison registered five goals and five assists, while Nolan produced 10 goals and a pair of assists in 2012/13. Stephane Sessegnon will set you back the same as Morrison but it remains to be seen whether the Benin international will still be at Sunderland when the season kicks off next month, with rumours suggesting a move away from Wearside could be on the cards. New Black Cat Emanuele Giaccherini could be the pick of Paolo Di Canio’s midfielders and is far more reasonably priced at 6.2, by comparison.

Premium Prospects

Much depends on City’s tactics under Pellegrini but if the Chilean opts for his preferred 4-2-2-2 formation, Fernandinho is likely to partner Yaya Toure in front on the back-four. The former comes in at 7.0 compared to the Ivorian’s 8.6 and could prove a viable alternative, with the Sky bonus system looking tailor-made for his talents.

Shinji Kagawa may be one of the bargains of the season if David Moyes hands him his preferred role in “the holeâ€. The former Dortmund man costs just 7.0 and will surely leap into many a Fantasy team if United part company with Wayne Rooney this summer. Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass has been handed a 7.3 price tag after last term’s success but with set-pieces and corners in his locker, the Scot’s guaranteed game time could still appeal, as he looks to improve upon his six goals and six assists in his debut year at Carrow Road. Sunderland’s Adam Johnson also looks an option but Giaccherini’s price will likely prove a deterrent for those eyeing up the Black Cats midfield. Mikel Arteta’s spot-kicks, allied with his propensity to pick up bonus, keeps him firmly on the radar at 7.5, while 7.6 priced Oscar offers an alternative route into the Chelsea midfield three – he’ll be hoping to continue the form which saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13.

Jesus Navas, at 7.6, could rival 8.4 priced David Silva for our consideration as Pellegrini brings a more attacking brand of football to City, while Philippe Coutinho will be earmarked by many after registered three goals and five assists in just 12 appearances in the previous season. The Liverpool winger costs 7.8 – 0.3 less than Steven Gerrard, though the latter does have spot-kick duties and a share of set-pieces and corners to bolster his appeal, with a deep-lying role also more inclined to favour him in terms of passing points bonus.

Frank Lampard’s consistency of game time could be set for an upturn following Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge – he’s priced at 7.9, after finishing last term as Chelsea’s top scorer with 15 goals to his name. Marouane Fellaini’s (8.3) prospects could be set for a dive, however, if Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3; the Belgian would return to a deeper role this time out, thus considerably reducing his goalscoring potential – a reliance on extra passing and tackling points may be on the cards.

Unsurprisingly, Santi Cazorla has leapt in price after last season’s superb batch of displays. The Spaniard will now set you back more than Theo Walcott (8.7 to 8.5) as a route into Arsenal’s midfield after registering 12 goals and 11 assists over 38 appearances. While Cazorla is also more likely to pick up passing bonus, it’s worth noting that Walcott’s 14 goals and 10 assists arrived over just 24 starts (and eight sub appearances) – he played over 1,000 minutes less than the Spaniard in 2012/13 and with more first-team minutes expected, could prove the better pick. Perhaps surprisingly, Gareth Bale is not the costliest midfielder on offer this season. After last term’s 21-goal haul, the Tottenham man comes in at 8.9 – 0.1 more than Eden Hazard but 0.1 less than the Belgian’s team mate Juan Mata; with Chelsea potentially primed for a double Gameweek 1, plenty of line-ups may well feature both as we look to get out of the blocks quickly.

Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for those playing the Sky game – we’re looking to defend our crown, having finished as top-rated league in 2012/13. If you fancy the challenge, you can enter with the pin 8000112 and with Sky offering a cool £1,000 for the winner of our official “FFScout†league, there’s every incentive to get on board.

    Ok, a constructive RMT.

    Foster - Boruc

    No need for explanation here

    Rotation is;

    SOT/SUN/WHM/SUN/CPL/SWA/stk/FUL/CPL/HUL/AVL/new/AVL/NOR/car/HUL/car/whm

    Kompany - GJ - (Williams - Yanga-Mbiwa - Chester)

    Three-way rotation is;

    MUN/WHM/FUL/CAR/HUL/WHM/AVL/SUN/WHM/SUN/STK/CPL/WBA/NEW/HUL/STK/cpl/STK/FUL (can't be beaten imo)

GJ reasoning is fixtures plus "season look at explosion imminent table"

Kompany Nailed on at Citeh compare to other defenders within the club. Should be a Bonus system suited player. Got a goal in him.

    Bale - Hazard - Snoddy - Lallana - Jarvis

    Bale: No reasoning required

Hazard: Undervalued imo opinion. Wants to improve from last season. bonus system suited

Snoddy: Season look at explosion imminent highlighted his ability. Good value and nice fixtures so no rotation is required.

Lallana: Club captain. When fit he is the best Saint attacking option imo. Bonus system suited. Set-pieces in his locker. Nice fixtures. Part of the CAR/SOT/WHM attacking rotation. On Explosion imminent table

Jarvis: Insane nunmber of crosses for no assist. WHM coverage for nice opening fixtures. Part of the CAR/SOT/WHM attacking rotation

    Aguero - Giroud - Cornelius

Aguero: Coverage for Citeh opening fixtures. Gives balance to the sqaud and a viable transfer point for RVP

Giroud: Favourite of mine. Good opening fixtures. Arsenal coverage. Should kick on from opening season

Cornelius: Target men find it easier to adjust to life in the Prem as the new signings last season proved. Part of the CAR/SOT/WHM attacking rotation

    CAR/SOT/WHM rotation is;

    (CAR/whm), (SUN/new), (EVE/STK), (hul/WHM), (TOT/EVE), (CPL/ful), (NEW/SWA)

2 big hitters at the back
three way rotation at the back
three way attacking rotation on last sub
    Best FFS found GK rotation
    1 fixture/punt player

that's all 15 players justified in my mind

Just to add it has good balance with room for manuervability once the season starts imo.

    Any thoughts?

Cardiff won't spend the amount of money on him to rotate. MacKay prefers a target man (Helguson last season) and I think he'll adopt a 4-5-1 away from home.

I like the Cornelius punt, less so Lallana. Jarvis is an interesting one and I've toyed with putting him in myself - can only see a big upturn in fortunes for him this season.

Got to be honest I'm not liking Giroud, though I can see why he's there; and there may even now be question marks over Aguero's game-time now too?

Him and Frazier Campbell vying for the second front man spot at home alongside Cornellius imo which might be an issue in itself as I can see Cardiff adopting a 4-5-1 in away games

That's certainly fair, but considering it's the START of the season before his stamina is likely to wane, and the good City fixtures and lack of other solid starter alternatives, Silva is the best we got.

This season, with their prices, and with no Suare they just dont appeal. Just my opinion. Wish Coutinio was 7.5/ 8. But really 9.0 for Sturridge? Just think, thats mental when Berba, Carroll and Lambert at 7.5

Whatever, the point is you aren't buying the team, you're buying their players. You don't buy Stoke defenders because you think Stoke are gonna break into the top 4.

Agree Red but such a shame Coutinouo is 9m, great player but too much cash imo. Apart from that see no value in their players, fantasy wise, unless Toure gets in.

Yeah I think Coutinho is probably 0.5-1.0 overpriced. He has potential, but not sure he has justified being more expensive than Fellaini for example.

Think Sturridge is good value. Mignolet and Toure are good value assuming they play.

Because the users involved are moderated for a reason and those discussing them do not have all the information or facts - nor should they. Because the majority of users will have no interest in a long thread discussing individual users. There really are lots of reasons.

Are people going with trying to have both Bale and RVP in their team this year or with having just one...
The fear I have is its easier to have them in from to start and if they dont perform you can transfer out but, if you dont have them and they do perform they will probably be way to expensive to get them in your team.... discuss??
Obviously with only one in your team it leaves alot more cash to play around with to strengthen other areas

I think I'll have both. I fear that if I don't have RVP in my team, it'll tempt me to WC after GW3 to get him in for Crystal Palace at home, in GW4, after the international break.

The only way I see myself not having RVP is if Chelsea have a DGW confirmed and it becomes clear who their main man will be up top.

There have been a few good posts about this, no doubt someone will post the links.

It's possible to have a decent team with Bale and RVP present, however omitting one (especially if it means downgrading RVP to a good, but considerably cheaper striker) frees up substantial funds to improve the rest of the team.

As you say, the concern is if one of them does well, you'll be priced out quickly. It may be a case of playing it safe, or wildcarding early.

If you feel you need Rvp after gw 1 then you just buy him before he goes to 14.1m. You will obv not wait until he is 14.5m before you get him.

Take a -4pt hit(sell Hazard for example. Or Rooney)

      Easy.

difficulty with that option is that the assumption is you'd want him for gw2 because he performed well in 1. So lets say he scores around 10 points vs SWA, then you take at least -4 to get him for GW2. Starting badly tends in my experience to set you up badly for the season.
I personally think not having him will lead to many a WC before the international break...

          What's wrong with -4?

          Anything can happen.

Last season I started with Kun+Torres+2m(to do Torres->Rvp in week 2)

Kun lasted 10 minutes...the result was everyone did Kun->Rvp and I was screwed.

I will take my changes without Rvp in the first 3 weeks.

Few deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as Kevin Davies!

He could be great if he settles, depending on how the more mobile and skillful members of Man City play along side him. It's his link up play that's the concern, and that could either be because he's a bad passer, and/or his team-mates at Sevilla weren't too great at reading his passes either. If you're a Manchester City fan, you'd hope it is the latter.

Anyone think Silva and Sturridge are bargains at 9.0?

Can see them being in a huge percentage of people's teams this year.

For someone who supposedly had a mediocre season, Silva still managed 4 goals and 12 assists, despite playing 300 mins less time compared to that of his wonder season of the previous year. Strange to see him priced so low for such a consistent player. I see him as a key figure in Pelegrini's play - he seems to love that quick Spanish style, hence bringing in Navas and Negredo. I think Silva will be nailed on apart from the obvious threat of injury or fixture congestion. Maybe a route out for Nasri?

Likewise, with Sturridge I'm surprised to see such a quick and talented player that scored 11 goals and 5 assists in just 14 games to be priced so modestly. I see him as nailed on and easily capable of 15-20 goals next season. With Liverpool not participating in any European competitions the risk of rotation is very low despite a huge squad of talented youngsters. I reckon the younger lads will be given their chance in cup games and such. Liverpool's opening fixtures are quite appealing and I think Sturridge will flourish even more under Rodgers, especially if Suarez is out of the picture. Should still link up well with whoever is there in August.

    Thoughts?

      Agreed. Both in my team.

Silva created the most chances per minute of any player in the game. If we pool in his good passing stats, improved strikers (Aguero being fit and Negredo) he'll be on for a great season.

I'd say he's on course to be the top assister in the league.

Silva has tough competition but if he plays, he will score high. But now Navas, Jovetic, Aguero, Silva and Nasri (and in tough away games, Yaya) will all have to fight for the 3 places in a 4231.

Silva I agree with, only downer is his poor form at the confed cup. I don't think he has as much potential as say Hazard, but Silva is consistent and id say another 180-190 points season is quite possible. For 9m, that is very viable.

Sturridge, i'm not so sure. I'm a pool fan, so I hope he does. Talented lad, but I wonder if he may replicate Cisse/Jelavic. I'm edging towards he won't, as liverpool create plenty of chances for him and he has a good supply of ammo. But I think his pricetag fairly reflects this doubt.

Remember that Sturridge has PL experience before his move whereas Jela and Cisse did not. You are right though he could hit a slump but here's hoping he doesn't with the nice fixtures Liverpool start with 🙂

I think Norwich have made some great moves this summer and should have no relegation worries this year. Olsson, Alderwiereld, Fer, Van Wolfswinkle and possibly Quagliarella are quality additions. Could be some very good fantasy options there.

Hull have signed Danny Graham on loan, don't fancy their chances. Agre with you re Norwich, should have more goals in them. Hope they steer clear of Hooper, really want to see him play for QPR.

Hooper would be a very good signing for QPR, I assume if a Premeirship team comes in for him he would go tehre though. I presume Remy will have to stick around until January as his court case is not until after the transfer window shuts. He would rip Championship apart.

Fonte. Ugh, he won't even play.
McAuley is more attacking than Ridgewell.
Skrtel's days at Liverpool are numbered.

Koscielny, Bassong and Hangeland are the only players even worth a look.

Why would you want Adam Lallana when Glen Johnson is the same price? Bet GJ ourscored him by far, similar attacking threat but GJ also bit more nailed and has Rodgers cautious tactics to rely on for low-scoring games
Same with Baines, he finished 10 points behind 3rd best striker Ricky Lambert last year, that's without a single penalty too as well by the way
10th best with next seasons bonus system and likely to play even further up the pitch this season

Both seem essential to me, despite how uncool it is on this sure to mention paying any more than 4.5 for a defender

Did he? Ok but his points weren't purely from set pieces, ie there is scope for him to score higher, particularly when u look at this fact

"During the 2012–13 season Baines created 116 chances for his teammates,[13] more than any other player in Europe's top five leagues."

That will especially be the case if bains is given a midfield birth this season.

Flexibility issues though. If an mid becomes an option at some point you don't want to have to use a FT to cut your defence before getting them. I like to keep the cash in midfield and attack. Saying that I do have Mertesaker 🙂

Budget defenders create inflexibility in the squad - they can only cost you money to transfer out

But with the 'save transfer one week and use two the second' policy, you should be able to select from the other four short term and invariably there is another cheap option available.

Good point, but you'd have to pay 5.0 for a back up mid versus 4.5 for a defender.

You make valid points. But sometimes considering spending £7m on a defender that outscores a midfielder is not always the best policy. You need to take into consideration that you will have budget players too and for every expensive defender you buy you are most likely going to need a budget midfielder/striker. It is then when you realise that the 4.5m on the defender offers better value than the 4.5m midfielder/striker too. Using a range of cheaper defenders you can rotate these to take advantage of fixtures as well as keeping a bigger range of big hitting midfielders/forwards and in turn most likely providing more viable captaincy candidates.

Nothing to do with FPL, but RIP Bernhard 'Bert' Trautmann, who has died at the age of 89. He's most famous for winning the 1956 FA Cup final for Man City depsite sustaining a broken neck, but his entire biography was astonishing.

    Here's a three-part video documentary on Trautmann's life:
