Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value†to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I just wanted to say I thought the voting system was working quite well.
People were putting real effort into making larger stat filled posts with meaningful insights and it was helping the site. It certainly helped me.

Dont fall foul of a few trolls.
IP ban them or make the votes only visible to members as most trolls arent members and most members arent trolls.

I was going to make this a new post but thought it would be too excessive so am just responding on yours. With regards to the voting, i would do this:

Keep the badges, but just hide the downvotes from view so only mods can see them. That way they can still be alerted to when a post breaches t&c's and remove it. Meaning a post will always have a minimum of 0 rating, but mods can see if it needs to be dealt with. Furthermore posters won't keep mentioning how they're being downvoted, causing arguments, however Jonty/Mark and co can still see who's abusing the system and deal with them. It would still allow the good posts which get hulked and discussed to be easily accessible. Would that be too hard to implement?

But you could argue that the downvotes are useful, too ... I know some see them as "bullying", but I see them as indicators of the community's displeasure. This could change their future posting, as well.

        Carrot and the stick.

Then again, I think the voting thing is stupid, useless, and annoying and should be scrapped outright.

That's true. But there's no other way really. You can get indicators of the community's displeasure by noticing how they post towards certain posters. The bad out weighs the good when it's do with the downvoting system. I think certain elements of the voting thing are wrong and should be tweaked/looked at, but it's helped with the quality of posts and that's the main aim really i think. With my suggestion also, people can still have light hearted fun/banter without getting abuse for it via the downvoting.

Most trolls are ignored by most people ... so there's an unspoken displeasure, there.

Now, I personally think that there's little-to-no positives that have come out of the voting ... it hasn't encouraged helping others/RMTs as most RMTers never reply, let alone up-vote.

And the sycophantic, look-at-me posts are, imo, dull and usually walls of meaningless text.

But I think trolls complaining about being downvoted is a delicious irony.

    Matt Jarvis, people?

Last season wasn't good. I admit it. Just look at his score.

    HOWEVER...

Firstly, he received two scores in the previous two years which were both over the 130 mark. While that was under different management, surely the threat of Andy Carroll headers, if Carroll can keep fit, offers a chance for improvement towards previous scores?

Secondly, West Ham have a nice start to the season.

Thirdly, he's shown promise in pre-season against fairly competitive opposition.
    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11685/8837700/pre-season-friendly-west-ham-defeat-hamburg-3-1-as-matt-jarvis-shines

5.5m - that's not budget basement but, if you're like me and you have a budget striker like Anelka or J-Rod, he could be a good answer for rotation.

    So, Jarvis, worth a punt?

I also think Jarvis is a fair punt, in light of this I have now been presented two options in my team, what would you prefer?
A: JRod and Jarvis (rotate all season)
B: 7m striker (Kone for example) and Thomas
C: 5.5m striker (Cornelius) and Morrison (WBA)

    Mourinho on Hazard:
"With me, his objectives will be to get the ball from other players and try to dribble past one or two players, to go in the direction of the area. He will have freedom, but he will have objectives."

Do you think this 'freedom' means he will play the no10 role? If so, this rules Oscar out as an option.

Outside of the double gameweek, I think 5 is the maximum to spend on a defender...

Just put some random thoughts together to help myself build what is a very difficult and long term component of the team. All about the value.

    5.5
ARS link - could well be decent value with reasonable opening fixtures and very little rotation outside of LB. Arsenal showed signs of becoming very tight at the start and back end of last season. Still relatively quite expensive and the likes of Walcott, Santi and possibly Giroud offer so much going forward.
MCI link - with potential rotation and an attacking brand of football (Nasty currently crocked too), it is difficult to punt straightaway here.

    5
TOT - Kaboul and/or Dawson here, but Spurs did flatter to deceive with cleanies. Could be a different story this season. If Vert's not seen as an LB, it may well be one to avoid as Caulker means 4 quality CBs are fighting over 2 spots.
LIV - Toure looks a bargain to me. Presumably nailed on, covers Mignolet for those looking at cheap keepers o/. Best option I think, all things considered.

    5-4.5
EVE - get a special mention and bracket because Coleman has incredible potential even as a standard RB. However, there's a distinct possibility that Alcaraz at 4.5 could nail down a spot. Personally, (ironically with the exception of Baines) I never want to pay extra for purely attacking potential again, but Coleman could well be an exception to that rule. Martinez factor?

    4.5
Last year, the 5s seemed where the value lay (very few 4.5s outside of Wilson, Hughes and Cuellar + the "promoteds"), but that proved not to be the case at all. This year, it's all about the 4.5s potentially...

WHM - Collins is the pick of the 4.5s for me. Super value.
SOU - great potential, worth at least one link, if not two. Boruc a bargain in an area with few alternatives.
NOR - most cleanies came at home, which is great (even if a couple were MUN and ARS). Garrido and/or Turner definitely worth a spot on the watchlist, minimum.

All these have the fixtures and the potential to improve on last year. I would say 3 of my backline will be based around from the pool above with 2 of Chester/Turner/Parr/Ward/Dawson as auto subs.

    Watchlist links:
SWA - Naylor. With Europa, fixtures and Davies there's too many variables atm.
NEW - Saylor or Mbiwa may offer some decent value.
SUN - Brown or Diakite are worth monitoring but see how PDC manages those fixtures.
FUL - Amorebieta could hold value.
AVL - don't see any cleanies here, though there was a point last season where they tightened somewhat.
STO - Wilson. Finally classified properly and churning out the clean sheets. Then a leg break. Now gone from most nailed on STO to bench fodder. Could be subjected to a DM role...

I was all set on 4.5s max for my defence (outside of the DGW), but I think Toure is worth a punt and so is Coleman (in for CHE defender) allied with Collins and Boruc in goal.

    Boruc 4
Toure Coleman (Luiz) Collins 4 4

is currently what I think is worth having. No rotation, but those looking at rotation, then that pool of NOR, SOU and Collins looks super for that.

Fair enough, but if Nasty was nailed then I'd take him and bag the .5

Originally I has Nastasic and was feeling confident. Then Lescott was getting a lot of game time pre-season which worried me. Now Nastasic could be out long-term depending on the scan results

In which case, Lescott then becomes on the radar as Richards will be seen as more of RB I'd have thought.

I beg to differ on your opening line, look at the value ratings last year, all the value,PPM, was in the high cost defs not the cheap ones. 2 million extra on a def get u a lot more than 2 million on a mid price mid or forward.

Cheap defenders are generally the key to FPL imho. Find the efficient ones and that allows to not just buy more up top but more flexibility when making transfers too.

4.0 defenders are essentially free as u must spend that much, similar with 4.5 mids and forwards. 2 mill extra gets u a top defender, can u say that about a 6.5 forward ?

It's all relative but a top defender does not come anywhere near the the top mids/forwards. Okay, Baines isn't a millions miles away, but there's Coleman with similiar attacking potential at 2.5 less or possibly even Alcaraz at 3m less.

Captaincy and defenders don't go hand in hand either.

yeah, it's just trying to gauge how cheap. How many CSs are they're going to be generally (very few at the start of a season usually), which ones more cheap sources, which ones from big hitters, who's got attacking potential too, which ones don't starve is of flexibility/cash if several big hitters come to the fore (attacking wise)?

Beginning to over analyse now methinks.

I know that's what the general consensus is but, why would Martinez bring in 'his boy', a man he knows can produce from up front only to rotate him?

Not saying Jelavic et al. can't / won't get the full time job but, I think it's Kone's to lose, no?

Is anyone planning to just go without RVP this year? If you genuinely think he is overpriced at 14.0m. I think it is a viable tactic but you need to have nerves of steel.

If he bags a brace first game against Swansea, he will be 14.3 by GW2 and if he scores again in the next two (big, televised games), god knows what price he will be going into a home game against Palace.

That is a different thing, just sensible playing the fixtures. I am talking about a decision that he is just not worth that price whatever the fixtures and building your side without him accordingly.

By the way, what would be your plan to get RVP in if his price is, say 14.6 by GW3/4?

Yeah I'm not taking the stance that I just won't consider him at all this season, that's a pretty bad strategy for any player imo, but yeah I said, no real plan. I guess its a big gamble if he rises to that much, but I'd probably have to downgrade a striker to Anelka or something and maybe downgrade a mid priced midfielder to something around bench fodder. That much surgery would probably require a WC, but we'll see what to do when that happens.

One thing about price rises though with a player that expensive is that its not as easy to get them in as you have to use two transfers, whereas with Michu basically everyone who was playing just downgraded a 7-8 midfielder.

well IF Rooney is playing more advanced it's a huge option

            Rooney + Aguero = 21.5

You'd need a 6.5 striker to go with RvP

Our first few fixtures also help as it means we have plenty of time to see how things are working.

"Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in. Overall my thought on Wayne is, if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we'll need him," - Moyes

yup, I have said this a few times when people have brought up this quote. Apparently Rooney wad angry at this until Moyes rang him to explain exactly as you just did.

From what I understand, his desire to leave stems not from that but from the comments of Ed Woodward.

There is already a shortage of reliable captaincy options and IF Bale leaves then Van Persie will justify his price. Apart from Aguero ,Suarez, Mata and maybe Hazard who else could you captain on a regular basis . I think Walcott could step up big time this year and maybe Lukaku if he can nail down a spot

    The Tottenham Defence

Last season Spurs conceded the fewest shots from outside the box.
They also conceded the fewest shots in the box, with the exceptions of City and Liverpool.

This is why I believe that their CS count will increase next year. I think Paulinho will only strengthen their defence as his box-to-box style will aid the defence directly and help keep possession up the pitch, easing the pressure further.

That's my two pennies worth anyway...

Ah what the hell, it's currently:

                Mignolet - jakupovic
                Ivanovic - Dawson - Collins - Alcaraz - Clyne
                Walcott - Hazard (c) - Coutinho - Jarvis - Koren
Lukaku (vc) - Aguero - Anelka

                +2.5 for Lukaku->Rooney

So I've only spent 0.5m of the Bale money 😀

Not bad at all. I can see the logic in Ivan, but still on Luiz.

I like but atm I'm not prepared to gamble on Bale leaving. Are you gonna keep Ivan post DGW? If not, why not just upgrade Anelka to a 6.0, you can raise the extra when you sell him?

I just wanted to get your opinions on a question that I have always seemed to have when I construct my teams over the seasons.

Is it a sounder strategy to devote resources to having 5 good-to-great midfielders (say 7.0+) and having a promising budget striker or to have one or two cheap promising midfielders and very strong line of forwards (hypothetically, like Aguero-Lukaku-Sturridge, you can fill in your own names to suit your preferences)?

This was my typical move, but I am not really chuffed about the options this year for building a power front line. I was thinking of going 9.5-9.0-7.5-7.5.-7.0 (or something like that) for the midfield this year, and using the 3-5-2 as my default (unless fixtures are totally poo).

Depends on who or whats available.

Last season for example you would have done well with Lambert 6, Suarez (he was 9.5 at one point) and playing around with Lukaku, Berbatov, Benteke at around 6/7).

Previous seasons required you to have one of the big names, the most notable was Henry.

This season I believe that the high priced attackers aren't worth it. High rotation risks in many cases, and just generally overpriced (Benteke 9.0 - you're having a laugh). My front 3 is Anelka/Sturridge/Lambert and I'm not tempted to get RvP.

Acccording to the RMT feature there is virtually no difference in points from

    Mingolet and a 4m keeper
    or
    Boruc and Marshall

Both combos expected to achieve approximatly the same score. , Boruc and Marshall .5 cheaper and an injury wont have the same impact. So if RMT is correct taking the risk on Mingolets fitness offers no reward.

Mingolet and Boruc expected to gain around 11-12 points over the season than playing Boruc and Marshall. However is losing 1m for the entire season worth twelver points?????

The way the scoring is set up levels the playing field for keepers of weaker teams in a way that it doesn't for defenders. They get save points and more opportunities to save penalties.

I personally dont get this Mignolet love as well, If I would get someone that expensive id invest an extra 0.5 for De Gea. And there is also Toure for a bit cheaper. Problem with the rotation though is that you play the wrong keeper.

Furthermore , i would like to point out that if you go for the cheaper keepers you can spend that money buying a Liverpool defender which gives a bigger upgrade in points earned than spending the extra on mingolet
There is about a difference of over 20 points per season per million spent on defenders

But keep in mind that 0.5 still makes a huge difference when margins are so tight and teams are so finely tuned. Because of the that difference a case can be made that Mignolet is a stronger pick when all factors are considered. But the Toure option is tempting to avoid the rotation issue and take advantage of Liverpool's (potentially) strong defense.

    Good morning everyone.

Finding it very difficult to pick that first/last striker spot.
Lukaku and J.Rod are there pretty much to stay (for now).

    But that one spot..

Benteke - would definetely like to have him, but that blank is a real pain.
Benteke, Lukaku & J.Rod. => Looks like a potential wc gw3 to me!

Sturridge - injured and not very confident with him and his continuous doubtfullness from last season.

Aguero - if I only knew he will start and play 90 mins..

Rvp - gw4 at earliest for that price.

I suppose I could go Benteke, Lukaku and J.Rod, save gw2 transfer and then maybe do 3 transfers in gw3 to sort things.
But in history of fantasy football, has someone ever actually managed to save gw2 transfer??

You have to have Benteks for the dgw - that's a no brainer imo. Last year's winner identified the opening dgw as a chance to get ahead and put some points on the board. I feel you need to adopt the same attitude.

I agree that the three fwd spots are a tricky affair at present. I think once we get nearer the opening weekend, we'll have a much clearer idea of our players.

The problem with Benteke is that there is a good chance he will score 4 points GW1, given he is away to Chelsea and Arsenal. You will then need to spend 4 points to rid yourself of Tekkers before the blank, so you have scored 0. Any other striker who plays GW1 will score at least 2, barring red cards or penalty misses.

When you look at his record, you are taking a very big gamble in leaving him out imo.

          Besides, you'll probably be w/cing in first 3 weeks so it's a win:win situation.

As long as you don't have 6 DGW players and a strong enough team to have three blanks on the bench for GW3 you won't need to take a points hit, although I think Villa are best avoided for those first three weeks.

A lot depends on Agueros performances in the remaining friendly games. If he bags a few goals and looks sharp then he should be first in line. He is arguably the most talented forward there and is already settled in the Prem and established at City.

Then Aguero > RVP for GW4 is achievable.

Also Lukaku > Studge is a nice option after DGW

Yep, at the start my fwd line was Aguero, Sturridge, J.Rod and planned Agu => Rvp gw4.
Then came double and Sturridge changed to Lukaku.

Like you say, remaining friendlies will give us more info about Aguero.
Who knows, might end up for Aguero, Benteke, Lukaku and downgrade my midfield & defence.

    Spurs Penalty Taker?

It is well known that Spurs did not win a single spot kick in the league all of last season. So we really don't know who AVBs preferred man from the spot is. It was Ade the year before but that was under Redknapp. To further cloud the picture, Ade missed a horrendous penalty in the Europa league last year that helped knock Spurs out of the competition. It seems to me the duty is very much up for grabs.

I would take a punt that Bale will end up taking the first penalty Spurs win this year (and they will win one, no way they can go two years in a row...no matter how much Bale's reputation precedes him). I think he takes them when he plays for Wales. I see no reason why he wouldn't be clinical from the spot considering how composed his strikes have become from open play.

Anyone else think this is a possibility? As if Bale needed spot kicks to further increase his value...

Sup Mac. Reckon Bale is going to force a transfer with a potential "now or never" intent from RM? That's the only way I can see him moving.

He won't pull a Modric/Berba. I think the whole thing has been flown out or proportion - he's probably open to going to Real (shock) but isn't going to kick up a fuss his agent is a maggot but he's also friends with Levy so can work both ways there. If he does go it will be for a huge sum because of our enormous (and irreplaceable) commercial investment in him.

His agent is just letting it play out to increase the value of his contract extension. There has yet to be an article with actual quotes stating that he wants to leave. Just pathetic journalism (feels dirty even giving the papers that much credit).

Interesting that, his agent is probably trying his best to sky rocket Bale's value. I wonder if it was all part of Real's masterplan to cook up this shit from last evening and wreak havoc in Bale's mind. to get him thinking.

He had one dive against Aston Villa (which was mostly out of self protection) and then the media over exaggerated it (go figure) to no end. It probably got into the referees head that he didn't want to be the guy who fell for Bale diving. He must have had 4-5 legit penalties denied because of it. Even got a couple yellow cards for no reason too.

yeah that's the one I was talking it about. players going down like that doesn't really bother me, sometimes they go down to protect themselves. as long as they go down and get back up immediately I don't consider it a dive. it's when they go down and stay down / fake an injury that it becomes a problem.

that's cheating plain as day. you can just as easily run out of the way as dive out of the way if he was trying to avoid guzan's potential kick.

so one instance of going down to avoid a potential hard tackle and he deserves to be forever branded as a diver? (I know those are not your words but that seems to be the consensus)

well it shows that he is a diver, that he has that mentality. having said that there's been loads of instances where he's been flying along and took a bit of contact and fallen, which to me is a natural outcome when running at high speed. so he's been unlucky a few times, but he set precedent for himself

Is it just me or are there no great options up top this year?
Just judging the top 15 priced..

RVP - Great option but 14m
Aguero - A very expensive rotation risk
Suarez - Out for 6 games
    Rooney - Playing reverse OOP
Jovetic - Rotation risk and playing potentially reverse OOP
Negredo - Another City rotation risk most likely.. and not any better than Dzeko really.
Benteke - Awful fixtures and a blank in gw3.
Sturridge - Nicely priced and decent fixtures but injured and rotation with Suarez and Sturridge - when he's back probably
    Torres - haha
Cisse - Actually not much against him, his poor form last year aside. Not sure if I should consider him
Podolski - Played on the wing for Arsenal reverse OOP. Very meh
Giroud - Actually a decent option hopefully.. but disappointed many on here last season
Ba- Rotation risk with Lukaku and Torres. Lovely if he moves.
Defoe - Rotation.. probably not even many starts this year with Soldado (Who will be in my team)
Lukaku - again.. rotation.. but should be a decent option for the DGW.
    Adebayor - Again..not a starter.

Didn't do this for any reason.. it's not designed to help anybody or anything.
I just find it funny that the top 15 or so priced strikers are more or less poor options with the exception of 2/3

No love for SOU def? Surely with a new def mid and CB they will do better? Clyne and Collins rotate well, would take out Dawson (not nailed on) for him.

I have snoody also but needs to monitor his role now with hooper and wolf vying for points. Hard to say if Norwich will become a more attacking side with more points for him or it just gets split..
