Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Westwood was one of the best young keepers around a couple of years ago before injuries and Mignolet came along. He was named in the Championship PFA Team of the Year for 2009 in his debut season with Coverntry and he won the club's player of the year award for the 2009–10 season.

Mannone on the other hand has been third choice at a club who were without a decent performing keeper for a while and still yet he still remained third choice. However, he showed vast signs of improvement during last season when both Chesney and Flappy were injured. His injury then gave Flappy a chance to take back the #2 spot which, of course, he did with some superb displays. Mannone is also known to be unpredictable at the back.

Who's your money on to take the #1 spot at Sunderland?

Should be Westwood imho, but probably will be Mannone.

Di Canio will start falling out with his players and dropping them though.

Westwood is seemingly the favourite. But its far from certain who is first choice and with virtually whole new team coming in its hard to judge how Sunderland will perform, best just to avoid.

For me it means dropping Bale to Santi (giving me double Arsenal coverage with Walcott)

Saving 1m for Cole - Baines in GW2

Then perhaps using 0.5 to go Guzan -> Mignolet

The remainder to fix up any other holes I see and have some flexibility in my team.

Nasty hasn't been confirmed out yet.. Yes he is injured but is still to be assessed.

why do you say that? lescott was known to score a few goals himself when he was at everton yeah?

Surely if he gets game time, he'll have the same CS potential as Zab and could possibly get on the end of a corner or two.

At Everton, yes. In the last few years for City, not so much. He is still a solid defender, but Kompany is more likely to get on the end of a corner these days than Lescott. Also, as Mr. Greedy says below, Nasty will eventually come back, and he will take Lescott's spot.

Zab is better because he swings crosses into the box like his job depends on it. His role might be different under Pelligrini... but if it is similar to last year, he is a better shout than Lescott.

Well they eliminated Mexico from the competition. We've won 11 in a row including a friendly against Germany, including 3 world cup wins, and we're on top of the World Cup qualifying group at 4-1-1. I believe this is the best this team has been for years. I don't think we'll be winning any world cups soon though ha. Getting out of the group stage would be a success again to me.

Puncheon is far from nailed-on; you're better looking at Schneiderlin, Pilkington, Dembele, etc in that price bracket.
I also wouldn't trust Newcastle's defence, with the exception of Santon they lack both quality and goal threat.

      Otherwise very nice indeed.

Just seen the Women's Euro final highlights.. The first penalty Norway got was a shocking dive, disgraceful award. The second penalty they got was iffy too. Justice done missing both. Did anyone else see the second pen miss? As the ball bounced back off the keeper, I thought Norway should have had a third penalty right there.. That was a hack and a half by the German defender. Maybe it was just my eyes, didn't see it in slow mo.

Once those are gone - I'd look at getting Baines at 6 and then one of Walcott, Hazard, Mata, Countinho, Gerrard, Sturridge, Santi.

Baines is a premium player in his position, and if he's available gives you the best defender around and a significant margin ahead of your opponents in that position. There's quite a big group of mids and fwds past Bale/RvP that will score similarly, so no rush to get them.

Aspas is like a lot of new signings, i think he looks good but it really depends on whether he'll play consistently. I think that's what I look for what, i hate the uncertainty of rotation because my subs are always poor. Pre season is not a good judge of possible team line up. Aspas' spin control from a through ball was great. Defend and midfield seems good. Not sure on the forwards.

I've overhauled my team. I've gone for direct attacking midfielders.

Not a big fan of having a non-playing GK (or sub of any kind) but so long as Mignolet avoids injury you are good to go. I know JRod is the preseason flavor here, but there are other options I think are better, see, e.g., Crouch (look at the guy's history in seasons with over 2000min played), Anelke (proven FF option over the years when he gets minutes), Weimann (every bit as good a second half as JRod and nailed on), Ruiz (nailed on and if healthy he will get assists/goals). I prefer Gerrard over Coutinho based on his FF history but Coutinho's probably a decent gamble. I like the rotation in back. 7.5/10.

Nice but don't like the mbiwa pick he doesn't rotate with your other defenders, if you look at this site http://www.fantasyfootballmad.com/en/home-away-rotation you can see which teams rotate home and away so potential to get rid of turner and put in a Southampton player that would give you a pretty decent option

I have Boruc. Not gonna get a Southampton defender who'll hit me doubly if Southampton concede if I had both.Rotation spreadsheets are grand but sometimes I'll go with defenders away rather than home. Mbiwa will help solidify the Newcastle defence and I expect it to be more similar to two seasons ago and be a better CS bet than Southampton.

He's got a big team this season and 4 games in 2 weeks, you honestly can't see Iva/Azp getting one each, Lukaku/Torres getting one start each and any changes at all in the midfield?

I think we're misunderstanding eachother, what I meant was one defender, one midfielder, one attacking midfielder, one striker.

Position is definitely the wrong word to use, although I have no idea what the right one is.

Ah, makes a lot more sense.

I honestly think Ivan will be nailed on, Azpi only used in Cup and other tournaments.

I don't see why. Azp is a better right-back, he has some notion of technique, crossing and passing and got a good engine on him. I absolutely love Iva, but he is more of a center-back playing right-back, just forces his way forward.

Hazard Benteke Lukaku for me i think... Swap Benteke and Lukaku for Giroud + whichever bargain striker pops up.. least risk most reward. dont wanna swap defenders so early in the game

Hazard will start. As to Lukaku it's mostly guesswork, but I think he will be #1 striker this season if we don't buy anyone. He'll start the first one, sub vs Villa, start vs United.

Chelsea vs Villa is on Wednesday and United vs Chelsea on Monday.

I think this rotation thing is overhyped. It's the start of the season and players don't need so much of rest to cope with 3 matches in 8 days.

There definitely will be some rotation but not wholesale changes imo.

I think the good thing with early tinkering is that it helps you explore all aspects, as well as loopholes, of the team you built. The more you study, the more you are familiarised and can utilise those extra effort in researching better players in your already well setup team.

Aye there's nothing wrong with tinkering. But no point getting stressed and worked up about your team when it's pretty much guaranteed that plenty of things will change between now and the start of the season.

I don't deny it. I agree that there have been moments where I got tangled up in a dilemma between two great players, hence stressed, but all in all it's also good fun. 🙂

No. But if the rumours persist and seems that He will leave eventually before Deadline but doesn't before August 17, it will be tricky to have him in the team especially with the Chelsea blank in week 3

This thing could drag on much like the Rooney and Suarez transfers.. The difference is that Suarez is suspended anyway and Rooney won't be in anyone's team unless he goes to Chelsea..

“He is one for the future and we have three quality senior goalkeepers in our squad.” says Maly Mackay here: http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/new-cardiff-city-keeper-simon-5376735

'One for the future' suggests he won't be number one straight away.
