Tottenham’s new striker Roberto Soldado and the Fantasy Premier League game’s new Bonus Points System were among the key issues vexing the community over the past seven days. We take our weekly look back at the big discussions that have recently slipped off the Hot Topics widget, as well as catch up with the latest developments in our community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Transfer dealings have caught the eye of the community this week, with Mathmo running the rule over Tottenham’s latest recruit Soldado. Mathmo predicts he may take a little while to adapt to the English Premier League but once he does the goals are set to flow. Be warned though, it seems that Soldado is unlikely to rack up many assists.

Soldado and Wayne Rooney were the latest subjects of our resident video expert Brutus619, who has been analysing their performances to assess their key strengths. Turns out both could be set for ‘surprise package’ status this season.

The 3rd Turd has been at his abacus again to look closely at the FPL’s new bonus system and create one of our most popular ever comment posts. His analysis based on 2011/12 data gives a game by game breakdown of how the new bonus allocation would have affected players’ points during that season. Turns out that goalkeepers could be the surprise beneficiaries of the changes. Make a cuppa before sitting down and soaking this one up.

Fifth midfield options provided the inspiration for Kings of Lyon’s post, which sparked an interesting discussion about the best budget options in midfield.  Could Everton’s Ross Barkley be a surprise selection in teams? Athletico Timbo certainly thinks he’s worth considering. For Evs, Cardiff’s Kim could be a shrewd purchase at just 5m in the FPL game.  According to our resident Wales expert the word on the streets of Cardiff is that not only is Kim nailed on, but a role in “the hole” behind a lone forward beckons.

Ever wondered how the Premier League’s newest recruits would have fared under an FPL scoring model in their previous leagues? The Puntmaster was on hand to delve into the stats and create these remarkable tables of their progress if FPL points had been applied to leagues such as The Championship and La Liga.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for strikers last week. The best player in the round, Robert Lewandowski, moved to BonZ’s Cardiff, while the leaders of the game are now Norwich, under The Shadow’s guidance. This week, clubs will be looking to trade players amongst themselves.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s leagues return for their third installment, and along with it the live score site, press releases, matchday reviews and a lot more. If you want to represent a European club of your choice, be sure to check out the details and register here before the deadline of August 9.

Looks like everyone is dropping Bale.

If I do this I can upgrade Wiltshire to Walcott and bring in Michu. What is the consensus on Bale, is it watch this space??

Get Walcott but not Michu. Poor fixtures. Take Walcott, Coutinho, Hazard, Mirallas.

More like watch this empty space.

Happy to have Gerrard over Coutinho. Spot-kicks, free-kicks, corner duties are a massive plus, he is cheaper and for me still has a goal in him in open play.

Similar comments can apply to Lampard, even if he gets a little less gametime.

Whenever I select a player occupying a midfield or striker slot they need to have an extra string to their bow. Merely having the propensity to pop up with a goal isn't enough. If they can assist in open play too all well and good but if you on the set-pieces you have that chance to pick up free points while still having a relatively poor game - that to me is essential.

Does anyone know why Garrido (Nor, $4.5m) has 15.1% ownership while MTurner (Nor, $4.5m) only 1.9%? Is Garrido going to be a regular starter this season?

Garrido will be first choice, but will have MOlsson competing. Turner is pretty much nailed on.

Turner missed quite a bit through injury so Garrido outscored him. Casuals see this and pick the top scoring Norwich defender at 4.5m. What they don't realise is that Turner has more goal threat and Olsson has been signed who could rotate with Garrido.

Because only 2% of players are as into it as we are.
The other 98% pick their teams looking at a) last season's score, b) ownership %. This creates a feedback loop pretty quickly meaning they all pile in to the wrong players.

Anyone else think Cole might be rested vs Villa to keep him fresh for Man United away.
I think Jose will target 7-9 points from games 1-3 so will want a strong defence week 2.

I think Azpilicueta might get that match too for more defensive ability at RB than Ivanovic.

So actually thinking Ivanovic might get games 1 and 2 whether at RB, RB or RB, CB.
He offers better attack potential than Cole too, so might be worth the gamble.

    Anyone with me on this?

    Evening Chaps,

Getting quite excited for the new season and the team looks good. Just feel like the defence is not strong enough, but it should be fine:

    Mignolet (Davis)

    Toure Collins Brayford (Shaw Chester)

    Walcott Hazard Coutinho Mirallas (Thomas)

    RVP Anelka Benteke

Don't like Liverpool combo, choose one or the other...
Will you bench Benteke in GW3 or sell him? Who do you plan to get if you sell him? Do you have 0.5 to go for Soldado or Jovetic/Negredo?

Not touching Jovetic/Negredo, but Soldado looks tempting. IF Bale stays the plan was to downgrade Benteke to someone like Hooper or J Rod and then upgrade Hazard to Bale. If Bale does leave, I will keep Hazard and Benteke for GW2, and then maybe bring in someone like Soldado or Sturridge for GW3.

Out of curiousity, why don't you think a double Liverpool defence is good?

Came across this interesting fact when doing some research on players:

Man United performances last season with/without Nemanja Vidic...

With = 19 games, 8 clean sheets, 14 goals conceded
Without = 19 games, 3 clean sheets, 29 goals conceded

    Food for thought?

      for non-United fans maybe

Vidic is to United what Kompany is to City. He's our lynchpin and leader. We are poorer without him, our other defenders are good, but they lack Vida's leadership and organisation

Not necessarily. 18 managers were relegated in season 2, they can not compete this time around. However, managers who were relegated in season 1 are now eligible again. So it could be 18, it could be less, it could even be less.

Some teams have RVP, some don't. For me it is simple to leave him out.

    The fixtures don't appeal.
    His price is now £14m.
The team is likely to be less of a force without Ferguson.
But most importantly at £14m you want to be captaining the player. The Chelsea double gameweek erodes any consideration for captaining RVP at Swansea and Man U's next two games don't really have any appeal to select him as a captain.

After a handful of weeks, when the dust has settled I'm sure I will bring him in, WHEN it is the opportune time to captain him and make the most of the £14m outlay.

He will be essential at times, but not as a season keeper and not at the outset either.

Not to mention the hits it will take to get the budget funds to upgrade a striker to him. I think it's a really poor idea to plan to bring on RVP after four or five weeks, unless you are planning to wildcard him in early in the season.

I think an early wildcard is actually a positive move.

The way in which Man Utd's fixtures unravel actually suits really well in addition to being able to identify the better of the cheaper value players.

what's with 'the fixtures dont appeal' ??? last season in the 10 games against chelsea, arsenal, city, spurs & liverpool he scored in 8 of them... fixtures dont matter with RVP!

My opinion, and I don't mean any disrespect to those who are planning to go without RVP to start the season, but I think this is a lie they are telling themselves to back up their claim that RVP isn't worth the cost at 14 million. It's right up there with the talk of United's preseason form and other nonsense that will have no impact once the games start to count.

Furthermore, I think it's very easy to make a seemingly solid team without RVP and much more difficult to do so with him, so many people are taking the easy way out and not making the tough choices to fit RVP in. It's always a risky (and poor IMO) choice to leave out the player that will be the top scorer, assuming he's fit for most of the season.

So would you captain him for the first three gameweeks?

The goalposts move in fpl each year. At what point do you think his price is detrimental to the rest of your team?

The problem is that many will be blinkered by the points he gains without being able to understand the points that you may have lost elsewhere as it isn't so easy to quantify.

However, when he has the strong run of fixtures - many at home to lower league opposition, then you need him - so you can captain him. Take away the captaincy function of this game I don't believe you can justify that price tag, so have him when the chances of him performing extremely well arise.

Inspite of all of this, he may very well score well in the opening games, but I think there are more opportunities spreading the wealth and indeed alternate captaincy candidates during this period.

      No.
      Obviously, lets's assume he goes.
He won't play both games for the DGW anyways. He's not match fit, hasn't play in pre-season so unlikely he will be fit for the start of the season.

2 - Not sure Lampard will be nailed on anyways
