Tottenham’s new striker Roberto Soldado and the Fantasy Premier League game’s new Bonus Points System were among the key issues vexing the community over the past seven days. We take our weekly look back at the big discussions that have recently slipped off the Hot Topics widget, as well as catch up with the latest developments in our community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Transfer dealings have caught the eye of the community this week, with Mathmo running the rule over Tottenham’s latest recruit Soldado. Mathmo predicts he may take a little while to adapt to the English Premier League but once he does the goals are set to flow. Be warned though, it seems that Soldado is unlikely to rack up many assists.

Soldado and Wayne Rooney were the latest subjects of our resident video expert Brutus619, who has been analysing their performances to assess their key strengths. Turns out both could be set for ‘surprise package’ status this season.

The 3rd Turd has been at his abacus again to look closely at the FPL’s new bonus system and create one of our most popular ever comment posts. His analysis based on 2011/12 data gives a game by game breakdown of how the new bonus allocation would have affected players’ points during that season. Turns out that goalkeepers could be the surprise beneficiaries of the changes. Make a cuppa before sitting down and soaking this one up.

Fifth midfield options provided the inspiration for Kings of Lyon’s post, which sparked an interesting discussion about the best budget options in midfield.  Could Everton’s Ross Barkley be a surprise selection in teams? Athletico Timbo certainly thinks he’s worth considering. For Evs, Cardiff’s Kim could be a shrewd purchase at just 5m in the FPL game.  According to our resident Wales expert the word on the streets of Cardiff is that not only is Kim nailed on, but a role in “the hole” behind a lone forward beckons.

Ever wondered how the Premier League’s newest recruits would have fared under an FPL scoring model in their previous leagues? The Puntmaster was on hand to delve into the stats and create these remarkable tables of their progress if FPL points had been applied to leagues such as The Championship and La Liga.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for strikers last week. The best player in the round, Robert Lewandowski, moved to BonZ’s Cardiff, while the leaders of the game are now Norwich, under The Shadow’s guidance. This week, clubs will be looking to trade players amongst themselves.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s leagues return for their third installment, and along with it the live score site, press releases, matchday reviews and a lot more. If you want to represent a European club of your choice, be sure to check out the details and register here before the deadline of August 9.

Getting back to the Dzeko debate with the pre-season he has had and with Agueor's prolonged absence with injury surely Dzeko will lead the line for the opening few gameweeks and given the promising fixtures surely he can nail down his position thereafter? Cant Aguero play behind him?

Negredo is a lot better than dzeko. That alone makes dzeko a risk.

In the preseason, Dzeko has scored 4 times while Negredo has scored once.

I'm not the best at math, but how does that make Negredo better, especially for the first game of the season?

          Look that up.

          Friendly football means nothing.
And negredo goal was b.s. The top side in Europe.

I understand the point you make Sanchez but the comparison isnt entirely fair. One played under an offensively-minded manager, the other a more cautious one and Dzeko was behind 2 other strikers in his club's pecking order while Negrado was the focal point of Sevilla's attack. Dont discount Dzeko's experience in the EPL or his record in Germany as the main striker and his pre-season this year. Im thinking of Silva and Dzeko as my opening salvo of City players until the international games kick off.

I just cant see the wisdom in taking a blatant risk of not starting week 1. Especially when week 2-3 transfers will be about selling chelsea. When dzeko doesn't start and his price starts falling, you will need to take a hit to sell him.

You can't compare a striker that is coming into a league with a striker currently in that league. Just because he did something outside of England does not mean he'll continue that form in the Premier League.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a great striker. Dzeko just has a lot more time with 1) the team and 2) the league. Even by being a sub last year he had an impressive goal tally. Imagine if he had started every game.

Just realised that Moidawg. Put that along with Pellegrini's comments and I think Dzeko will start the season and if he gets off to a flyer he'll be hard to dislodge. At that price he's dynamite!!!

Read it again. All it says is he is a lead striker (as oposed to a support striker).

Lads, I would appreciate some feedback on my first try:

    Migno/Boruc
Zaba/Merts/Ivanovic (Shaw/Collins for Rotation 3rd DEF when Ivanovic gets ditched)
    Hazard/Walcott/Silva/Mirallas/(Morisson or Thomas)
Lukaku/Dzeko/ (*** Aspas or Weimann or *** who?***)

Plan: Ditch Hazard and Ivanovic for cheapies, to make room for ***->RVP

Ok peeps, what started out as an exercise in tinkering for the sake of mischief has led to a team that's a bit bonkers but also strangely compelling....first is the team I've had since the start (more or less) second is the crazed monster....which do you prefer???

    A/.

    Jussi Boruc

    Rat Shaw Toure Koscielny Brayford

    Silva Theo Coutinho Hazard Colback

    Lukaku Giroud Aspas

    1 Mill in the bank

    B/.

    Jussi Boruc

Rat Shaw Vertonghen (if he's fit for GW1) Williams Brayford

    Mirallas Theo Coutinho Santi Kim

    J-Rod Sturridge Aspas

1.5 in the bank for whoever to whoever ( Theo - Mata maybe, or Sturridge to Soldado etc, just general flexibility)

They'll basically be a rotating pair, and they do rotate well! Two other decent defenders in with them then, both teams would be 3-4-3 most often I think..

I understand a rotating pair, but I was under the impression that the rotation pairs mean that you'll have either your GK or your defender playing a home match.

So, let's take GW5 for example:

          West Ham host Everton
          Southampton visit Liverpool

Would you have the home pair playing? So that would be Jussi and Rat?
If a goal is conceded, not only does Jussi's clean sheet disappear, but Rat's does as well.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here since I agree with getting a rotating pair for either goalkeepers or defenders, but I don't think you should double up. That's now 4 players on your side who are in West Ham/Southampton. That's a quarter or your team in a side that will be mid-bottom table.

    Dear members,

As you know starting a cash league can be a little tricky, especially on sites like these, where no-one knows who the hell you are.

I have been running a cash league for 13 seasons now, which started out being a company-only competition, it’s now morphed into an invite-only league of around 40 teams.

As of this season, I have decided that I would open an entirely new League to everyone. Dependant on interest this season, I will organise a tiered-division system along with potentially running a cash-game for following seasons. I am curious as to how many managers would like such a game to exist.

But as of now, it’s FREE to join – and we’ll see how we go from there. Entries will be allowed up until the start of Gameweek 2.

    League code is: 75677-128768

Please send me your email address to peterpickin@hotmail.co.uk – let me know your thoughts, and I will keep you updated on the cash games we already have in play.

    Pete

PS, I'm not Nigerian, and this is a FREE league.

I cannot understand why Spurs would get him, they already have Sandro, Paulinho, Parker, Livermore... Cardiff was chasing him but the player obviously prefers a better team which I can understand.

    Boruc

    Azpil Brayford Turner (Parr, Chester)

Silva Hazard Schurrle (punt) Tonev (Ben Arfa)

    Soldado Aspas RVP

What do you guys reckon? Schurrle is a punt, but I've been watching him and the guy is class. Possible rotation, but the same can be said about any of hazard, mata, oscar and schurrle... so I guess 2 is hedign you bets! Expecting some big big returns for chelsea in the first game.

Ben Arfa can come in for Tonev after the city game... Any comments? Muchos Gracias!
