Over the last few weeks, a combination of factors have elevated Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez into many pre-season Fantasy squads. The Saints’ kind opening run of fixtures has caught the eye, while Rodriguez’s more budget-friendly appeal over Rickie Lambert has also played a part in how we assess his potential across the Fantasy games. Having scored three times in the opening couple of summer friendlies, Rodriguez has been quick to hit form and as interest in the former Burnley man gathers, we use the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to analyse the impact of Mauricio Pochettino on both Rodriguez and Lambert over the previous season.

As mentioned previously, the KPI helps us track certain key statistics which are indicative of a player’s form over a certain Gameweek range or season. Having ran the rule over Robin Van Persie’s impact at United compared to his final year with Arsenal, we delve into last season’s data to look at the Saints duo’s performances from Gameweek 1-22 under Nigel Adkins compared to Gameweek 23-38, when Pochettino was installed as the new man in charge at St Mary’s. By also utilising the Comparison Tool across the two periods, there’s plenty for Fantasy managers to mull over.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Thoughts on Wes Brown at 4.5m?

Should be first choice centre back with O'Shea. If Cuellar gets in then Brown can play right-back as Di Canio doesn't seem to rate Bardsley (not surprising) and Gardner is suspended for the first match.

Sunderland have a decent run of fixtures and, crucially for me, have a chance of a clean sheet in GW3 away at Crystal Palace, when I need solid performers to step in for Hazard and Benteke on the bench.

"Injured" meaning he missed the last game due to a slight problem and, according to Di Canio, was going to resume training the day after.

He came on as a sub in the first pre-season game and then started the next 3. At the moment they would have no choice but to play him given their lack of options

“He had a little problem and we decided not to risk him today,” Di Canio revealed.

“He has had a very good pre-season which was a surprise for everyone, even him.

“We didn’t want to risk him because he’s an important player now.

“On Wednesday he was running again and on Thursday he can train harder because I want him to be available as soon as possible.”

PDC seems like a much bigger fan than I am. I think many will have Mannone and so haven't looked much further at Sunderland.

Definitely worth consideration but I see Collins, Murner, Shaw/Clyde and Amorebieta all ahead of him in the price range.

I think A could outscore B by a lot in GW1 so therefore justify the transfer.. What do ya think?

Personally think Messi and Iniesta will cause Neymar to flop (hoping more than anything). But even if that is just wishful thinking, if we get Bale or a world class forward we could be serious contenders.. We've fixed all of the potential problem areas this summer 😀

Is taking a punt on both Aspas and Zaha too risky? Current team is:

    Mignolet

Will hold for gw1 and 2 then do a triple -4 or a quadruple -8 depending on which attacker bandwagons look best to catch. I will go six dgw to maximize the chances of a big haul that will pay for a hit or two. Just put six dgws in your squad and see how good it looks.

    Best Chelsea defs?

You should start by looking at who is not nailed on for two starts... That's Azpil and Luiz for me.. Mourihno has already said he see's Ivan as a RB so he should be there gw1 but may be replaced by Azpil gw2. Will he move to CB gw2? Doubt it.., Cahill has played most minutes pre-season of any Chelsea player, Terry is so slow he would be overrun by Villa forwards

Cole (boring) Ivan (sheep) and Cahill (maverick) are the nailed on defs for me..

I don't see the point getting one at this stage.
So many uncertainty's and the one (Cole) I expect to start both has no attacking threat.
I expect Villa to potentially score, and United. Then a blank gameweek 3..
      I don't see the point.

I agree, I don't care how well you plan it you either have to take a 4 point hit which will most likely more than eliminate any gains or else have a wasted few million on your bench for several weeks.

Clean sheets are much more unpredictable at the beginning of the season and if they had a decent GW2 then I could see some logic but they have the worst possible fixture followed by a blank. If my strategy was to go with a prime Che def long term then maybe but it isn't for me.

Some may say I told you so after one week but after 4 weeks we will have all made up those gain and potentially then some. And not forgetting that by benching a player for a few weeks if that is your plan that the panicking masses who didn't see the blank week may ship out every Chelsea player and leave you vitally short of 0.1 when you get to the spare FT week.

I have him now just in case the move to Chelsea comes off before GW1. I think it's extremely unlikely though and don't expect to start the season with him. 10.5m non-nailed player? No thanks.

Hi all. Just joined and looking for someone to talk some sense into me. Had quite a few non RVP teams, but I'm quite liking this one with him in. Bit worried there at too many risks though? Only having a Southampton keeper, Terry, Toure, Pennant, Dzeko.

    Boruc, Davis
    Terry, Toure, Collins, Turner, Chester
    Hazard, Walcott, Miralles, Nolan, Pennant
    RVP, Lukaku, Dzeko

As you have Dzeko a rotation risk, Pennant isn't good enough bench fodder (is he nailed on). Personally i don't like Nolan. I am assuming you will find a way of getting rid of all three of those Chelsea players before the gwk3 blank, otherwise you will have to play Pennant.

Yeah maybe I will change pennant to Thomas. He has a fairly decent game week 3 anyway. Terry will go for Coleman, then get rid of either hazard or Lukaku, depending on who has done well or whether there are any forwards or midfielder going up in price quickly. I'll have a think about Nolan... I quite fancy him to do well over the first 3 games. Thanks for the reply mate.

Yeah I don't like the keeper thing. I did have snodgrass for Nolan and 2x 4.5 playing keepers. Other option was Toure down to shaw, and get the extra 0.5 for the keeper that way. Cheers. I'll be back to a team without RVP tomorrow anyway probably!

I like Nolan and Pennant myself so don't be afraid of sticking to your guns by you do need to find an extra 0.5m somewhere to sort out the keeper situation.

I think I will stick with Nolan. I do like pennant too, I think he could be one of the best cheap midfielders. I think he missed quite a bit of preseason though as he wasn't allowed into the US. Hopefully he will be in contention by week 3. Agreed I need to sort out the keepers though. Cheers for the reply.

Nice spreadsheet, Doosra. I've seen it before, but I've been trying to ignore it because the minutes played has me a little worried that Collins and Tomkins might split the starts. Any chance of that? It would sure mess up a lot of people's Collins/Shaw(or Clyne) rotation plans.

Sturridge is hit or miss for GW1 alright.. but even if he's 75% fit I'll have him in. I think this will be a big season for him..
Plus I don't want to use a transfer getting him in afterwards.

Soldado is a proven champions league goal machine and I don't think the Premier League is much of a step up from La Liga if at all.

Lukaku is only for the DGW 😀 and is cheap enough to take a punt on 🙂

Well Sturridge is going to come back sometime in the first few weeks so no wildcard will be needed there unless he's become a totally different player over the summer but you could say that about anyone.

Soldado, you're right, he might flop, but I personally think he's going to take the league by storm and prove a bargain.

If Lukaku doesn't play the DGW and goes tits up then he'd be odds on to start GW2 so again, doubt there'll be a wildcard..

Who are you going with just curious? 🙂

The only forward that I see being "tits-up-free" is RVP.
                  Everyone else has a downside..
(RVP has a downside too I know but he's proven that it's irrelevant with him)

      Draft #7 RMT please

      Foster/Boruc

Zabaleta - Mertesacker - Cole (Brayford, Chester)

Hazard - Mirallas - Walcott - Coutinho (Pozuelo)

      Lukaku - Soldado - Aspas

I still don't know who to choose between Coutinho and Silva... Suggestions?

You are spending way too much in GKs, try to downgrade one of them and upgrade your defense

What are peoples thoughts on Zabaleta?

Nailed on, or at risk of the mighty Richards?
