Over the last few weeks, a combination of factors have elevated Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez into many pre-season Fantasy squads. The Saints’ kind opening run of fixtures has caught the eye, while Rodriguez’s more budget-friendly appeal over Rickie Lambert has also played a part in how we assess his potential across the Fantasy games. Having scored three times in the opening couple of summer friendlies, Rodriguez has been quick to hit form and as interest in the former Burnley man gathers, we use the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to analyse the impact of Mauricio Pochettino on both Rodriguez and Lambert over the previous season.

As mentioned previously, the KPI helps us track certain key statistics which are indicative of a player’s form over a certain Gameweek range or season. Having ran the rule over Robin Van Persie’s impact at United compared to his final year with Arsenal, we delve into last season’s data to look at the Saints duo’s performances from Gameweek 1-22 under Nigel Adkins compared to Gameweek 23-38, when Pochettino was installed as the new man in charge at St Mary’s. By also utilising the Comparison Tool across the two periods, there’s plenty for Fantasy managers to mull over.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Etiene Capoue is likely to have a medical at Tottenham today, bringing another CDM in our side.

I don't get why Spurs are singing another defensive-ish midfielder, as we already have Parker, Huddlestone, Livermore, Paulinho, and Sandro. Do we plan to play him as CB?

If you play 4-3-3, for the 3 midfield spots you'll have Paulinho, Dembele, Sandro, Capoue, Holtby, Livermore, Carroll. That seems about right to me. Allows for injury and rotation

Parker has had it, Huddlestone is box-to-box, Livermore is not a DM, not yet, anyway, Paulinho I know not, so that leaves Sandro ... 😕

He's probably the closest thing to a regista in the Prem. Needs a midfield built round him but he's obviously not that good to be worth it.

With 6mil to spend on a starting Midfielder the debate has finally been reduced to..

    A) G. Ramirez
    B) J. Morrison

They both SOT & WBA have favorable run of initial fixtures.

Ramirez's historic stats are cloaked by a lack of game time I think and if he had not been banned for 3 games at the end of last season would have scored more points and been on more peoples radar

Morrison is tried and tested and if he returns the same as last season is a good shout for 6mil. With the arrival of Anelka could be an assist magnet too.

So A or B chaps? What you reckon.

Ramirez struggles for game time, not just because of selection but because of a marked inability to complete more than an hour - he doesn't seem to be able to cope with the high pressing style that Pochettino has installed. As a fan, he can be very frustrating. Just a warning 😀

LUCIBLE - Damn it... back to square one. My thinking over game time was just him getting used to the team last season as he wasn't fully match fit when he arrived.

DOOSRA - He might not be a superstar but his points per minute were pretty impressive and as mentioned by SQUEAKY Southampton are pretty attacking so by default might pick up assists and goals.

Oh no, he was consistently struggling, even towards the end of the season.

If it's any consolation, I don't think it's a mad punt at all. You just have to hope he matures and knuckles down. If he does that, he could be very impressive. As you say, we aren't afraid to get forward.

      Nani injured
      Young is beyond crap
      Valencia seriously struggling for form

Zaha has looked menacing in pre season, but is far from the finished article. Decision making needs a lot of work, often runs into blind alleys. Walcott was the same back when he joined Arsenal forst (not saying Zaha will be the new Walcott)

I have the same conundrum, but I'm out of the country from 3pm today.. Have to admit my team looks great with Bale in.. But if he stays and racks up the points from the start, his price will skyrocket, as his ownership has been steadily leaking all week, right now down to 22.3%. It's a wildcard job to get him in. I'm stressing out over here!!

    Hello all,

Greeting from Seattle. First post. Last year was my 1st playing fantasy football and I only discovered this site around week 20. Have been lurking, laughing and learning ever since. Snapped up a membership for this season as soon as I could.

For GW 1, I offer the following 13, and ask for suggestions as to what to do with the 19.5 I have left in the bank for my final 2 - 1 mid, 1 fwd:

    Boruc; Mannone
    Kosc; Coleman; Cole; Collins; Chester
Walcott; Couthino; Hazard (c); Thomas; ?????
    Anelka; Lukaku; ???????

Looking at 3-4-3 to start. Thanks in advance.

Dzeko will start the first few games. After that we will know who is the main city striker. If it is Dzeko you hold on, if not then you sell for Lambert, Berbatov or anyone who shines.

Boruc>Mignolet, considering you don't have Toure. Would do Collins>Brayford, as you want 2 4.0M on the bench. Alternatively you can do Cole>Brayford GW2 and play Collins week in week out. To save money, Mannone>4.0M would be good. Thomas>Kim as a better 5th mid.

These are just me being picky, as I would want that money you spent on benched DEF on MID.

I am currently going without RVP. but I'm starting to wonder, with his price tag, if he will be more valuable this year with less players going with him in their starting 11. I know he has high ownership but a fair percentage of these will be made up of casual selectors. To get a true picture of how many challenging FF players will have him in their team, perusing the RMTs on here is a greater source

Last year we had to have RVP because if we didn't we'd lose ground on rivals. This season, with the slightly off putting 14 million tag slapped on him, we may actually gain ground on a fair amount of our rivals.

The captain pick issue is also key to having him. You don't have a 14 mil player in your team unless you are captaining him almost every week of the season, bar the DGWs. The positive here is that RVP produces almost every week of the season whereas any one of Hazard, Couthinho, Wally, and the other big hitters up top are, while obviously capable of many big returns, still no where near as consistent and the potential of 2 point captains in a RVP less team is far greater.

I'm still without him, but the closer we get to next Saturday, the stronger the urge becomes

Quick rundown on Etienne Capoue for those who are interested.

He is primarily a defensive midfielder. A tall, rangy player with excellent strength, good aerial ability and pace, combined with a good reading of the game and a knack of timing challenges and interceptions he is excellent in a defensive role and has proved himself capable at center back on occasion too. His combative role has resulted in his share of cards, although his knack of staying on his feet to win the ball means it could have been a lot worse - picking up seven yellows and a solitary red last season. Certainly an improvement on earlier seasons including one where he broke double figures with some ease, earning the dubious accolade of the worst disciplinary record in Ligue 1.

He attracted some rather unwarranted criticism - considering his remit - that he did not contribute enough to the attacking phases of the game. Consequently, in his last season at Toulouse he scored 7 times in 34 appearances, a considerable improvement on his previous season's tally of 3, which was again helped by being fielded slightly further forward at times. Blessed with a powerful if somewhat wayward strike, it is clear he is still unseasoned in the art of attacking and shooting. Unsurprising, given last season's goal tally equaled the sum of all those preceding it.

He has the stamina and enough technical ability to play as a box to box central midfielder, and indeed this is reflected in his range of passing. While the ever reliable simple pass, stalwart of the holding midfielder, is often used - he is more than capable of picking out longer range passes and some excellent through balls.

It remains to be seen whether he can adapt to play any further forward like his former youth partner in the middle of the park, Moussa Sissoko. The option to play in such an attacking role, such as the one off the striker, is probably diminished even further considering his destination is looking increasingly like Spurs. It would be safe to assume he has been signed for his defensive abilities and his versatility, playing in either a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-2-1 - which may prove invaluable when providing cover in a rotating, Europa League-committed squad.

Under the new bonus points system Capoue may be set to benefit with his high pass accuracy and tackling, but this all depends on the price. Given his goal-scoring form last year, coupled with FPL's reticience to underprice newcomers, he is unlikely to be priced as a typical 'defensive midfielder' around the 5.0 mark. However if he comes in at a rather unfashionable 6.0 or below, he may prove himself to be an intriguing differential, depending on whether he nails down a starting berth and especially if he is fielded in a box to box role in Villas Boas' preferred 4-3-3 formation.

I am thinking I like to have one good bench option each week. Too many times last season my bench played for 1 or 2pts. Without RVP I can have a really strong side and 1 strong bench player to cover stupid Man City or Chelsea rotation aberrations. Without RVP everybody really needs to contribute.

McShane should start but he's rubbish and with almost 0 attacking threat. Though he did score the all important goal to clinch Hull's promotion. Possibility of getting dropped later in the season too if things aren't going well. (Though I guess the same could be said of anyone) He just seems a likely candidate for it.

Better options out there I think.

      Ha!
I've done a few posts around this. Pretty conclusive, A.
Then swap Cech straight out for Migs.

Only concern is if you want a mid and striker from Liverpool.

Lambert has entered my team for the first time this pre-season. I think this England call-up will really spur him on. Being the main man in a very good and improving Southampton team and being the 3rd highest scoring forward last season helps matters. It's hard to pick him over Berba or Dzeko though...

not sure about Berba for the start, Dzeko is a no brainer though.

like him but want to see how his first few games play out personally so il go with dzeko ad probably switch them after gw3-4 when he starts to get phased out
