Many of the Fantasy Football Scout community were looking at a root and branch overhaul of their teams this week, as the shine from last month’s Wildcards quickly began to wear off and the cruel reality of injuries and shifting fixtures began to kick in. We look back on the discussion that ensued, whilst also pondering the player of the season to this point and the likely top target for the remaining Gameweeks of the campaign. As ever, we also find time to catch up on all the ups and downs in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Strikers were again under the spotlight this week, with Phaze 1 coming out in full support of Robin van Persie, despite his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of £13.6m. His post entitled “Is RVP Worth It” acknowledges that the United frontman represents poor value financially but, he said, this is outweighed by his captaincy potential. Has today’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Fulham strengthened his case?

The Fantasy Freak was less optimistic about the prospects of City’s strikers. With their tough schedule, involving an FA Cup clash with Chelsea and a Champions League encounter with Barcelona, he predicted rotation up front from Manuel Pellegrini. Instead he urged people to consider Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge or Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, among others.

Meanwhile, our midfields were the focus of Innsie’s post looking at some key differentials in the centre of the pitch. Chelsea’s Willian and Cardiff’s on loan United winger Wilfried Zaha were among his top picks discussed.

Another of Innsie’s midfield picks was Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass, who also caught the attention of our resident Sky Game expert d1sable. He argued that his underlying attacking stats demand our attention – although Snodgrass will need to return from the knock that saw him sit out the weekend’s draw with City to help d1sable’s case.

Defenders were far from neglected in this week’s chatter as we asked the community for their thoughts on best back lines over the coming Gameweeks. Yome came forward to stress how he’s avoiding Cardiff defenders, despite the Welsh side’s kind fixture run – a shrewd move given the latest showing at Swansea, He favoured the value of Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Aston Villa’s Nathan Baker – he was certainly spot on with Dawson following today’s shutout. Elsewhere, Yes the Sess! was among those backing the rock-solid Chelsea defence and Southampton’s re-emerging rearguard.

West Ham’s Winston Reid was the only defender who made d1sable’s list of best Fantasy Football assets from now until the season climax. He predicts a particularly great final four months of the season for West Brom’s Chris Brunt and Manchester United’s Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, Captain Shirokov quizzed the community on their favourite player pick of the season. Santi Cazorla was his choice, having notched him four goals in two matches after transferring him in over Mersut Ozil. S.Kuqi opted for Adam Lallana and Deicide has selected Chelsea’s ever-reliable defender John Terry – ever-reliable until this weekend, of course.

We also took time out to canvas opinion on the approaching Gameweek 28 blank – how will you cope with the missing fixtures from City, United, Sunderland and, err…West Brom?

Finally, Jesus Navas – Our Lord rocked up with some superb analysis of Luis Suarez and his flat-track bully statistics. Essential reading for all those pondering the merits of the Uruguayan flavoured armband ahead of the trip to Fulham.

The Community Tournaments

The Uefa Council’s Champions League and Europe League tournaments got underway in Gameweek 24. Following the first set of fixtures ENR, Super Zlatan, Champ, Athletico Timbo, Torres Magic, The Shadow, Billy Ketsu and Giggs Boson topped the Champions League groups. Those in pole position in the Europa League groups were DonTheSpecial One, BBG, The Tinkerman, NEIL, Archie, Rate My Username, SW6, AK, Louis9618, Snake Juice, Home Run Baker and Beavis.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, YOLO Toure was leading the way with an overall rank of 11,824. In addition, there were six teams in the top 100,000 following Gameweek 24.

Torres Magic topped his own Last Man Standing league in Gameweek 24 with a score of 77 but waved goodbye to 24 managers. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the After Xmas League and Unbelievable Bentek-kers heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Going into Gameweek 25, that chap Jonty held on to his lead in the FFS Old Farts Club league, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and the FPL part of the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the Iron Man’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

I’m still hanging to my lead in one of In Tommy We Trust’s AllThingsFPL leagues along with Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17, Koneheads and Evs.

If you can afford Gnabry to someone worthwhile, then do that. I would start HBA and transfer out Bardsley. I'm doubling up on WHU defense with Demel and Adrian

No you could have also included money in bank, Toure may get suspended, would do at least 2 transfers, bring in Chelsea def 1st and then maybe look at bringing in a mid

            Adrian/Mannone

            Cahill/Kosc/Ward/Chester/Clyne

Want to double on Chelsea. Azpi potential for rotation is a risk. Don't think Ivan has that.

    Guys, here is my team:

    Kosc, Azpi, Fonte, Ward, Vlaar
    Hazard, Mata, Lallana, AJ. Mutch
    Suarez, Sturridge, Adebayor

    1FT, 5.2m ITB

    So here are my concerns:
    A) AJ -> Silva (for 2 weeks) or Mirallas or who else?
    B) Mutch -> Better 5th mid
    C) Vlaar -> Better 5th def
    D) Marshall -> Mannone

    What transfer to make:

    C: Both for a hit.

I guess I am not the only one on here with half an eye on potential GW29 blanks. Many games are likely to be cancelled however some games are more likely to be cancelled than others. Therefore I thought I would work this out to help others who do not have the luxury of carrying this week’s transfer (I have Yaya and Terry...).

So, I have taken the odds from oddschecker (http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/fa-cup) to calculate the implied probability of each BPL team winning their tie next week. I have then taken these implied probabilities and applied them to GW29’s fixtures to calculate the likelihood of each match taking place.

To quickly run through an example: Arsenal v Swansea. Both are still in the cup: Arsenal v Liverpool and Everton v Swansea. Arsenal are 7/5 to win (implied probability 41.16%) and Swansea are 11/2 (15.38%). So there is a 56.54% chance one of them will get through, therefore a 43.46% chance of this fixture taking place in GW29.

Make sense?! Fear not. Here is the complete list. Remember, the percentage is the likelihood of the GW29 fixture going ahead on that weekend.

    Chelsea v Tottenham (73.33%)
    West Ham v Hull (69.70%)
    Crystal Palace v Southampton (60%)
Man City v Aston Villa (54.55%)
    Cardiff v Fulham (48.87%)
    Arsenal v Swansea (43.56%)
    Newcastle v Everton (38.1%)
    Liverpool v Sunderland (35.42%)

You may notice some anomalies – both Chelsea and Man City’s GW29 fixtures have more than 50% chance of going ahead for example. This is because I have not accounted for a draw next week. Replays will take place on the 25/26 February; after GW27.

The main thing you should take from this is the RELATIVE likeness of these games going ahead. Chelsea and Southampton are a lot more likely to be playing in GW29 than Liverpool and Sunderland. Basically, if you HAVE to make a transfer this week it might make more long term sense to bring in players from teams at the top of that list.

Hope this is helpful! Also, hopefully someone who knows a bit about fixture rescheduling can shed some light on which of those might be shifted to midweek in the same GW (I have heard Liverpool v Sunderland might be possible).

Thanks for the great post! I just want to point out that this isn't the correct way of getting the probabilities.

FA cup - Arsenal v Liverpool and Everton v Swansea. Arsenal are 7/5 to win (implied probability 41.16%) and Swansea are 11/2 (15.38%).
Arsenal vs Swansea goes ahead in GW 29 only if neither one of them wins = both Arsenal and Swanea lose.
The probability of both of them losing together is probability of Arsenal losing multiplied by probability of Swansea losing = (1-0.4166)*(1-0.1538) = 0.4936.
Therefore, probability of Arsenal vs Swansea going ahead is 49.36%.

        Points to note:
        - Many of these fixtures could easily be rescheduled for the same midweek.
        - As BUK II mentioned, draws haven't been accounted for.

You beat me to it, the maths made me cry a little inside. Also the odds don't take into account the bookies slice of the bet, so everybody's odds are marginally better than they appear.

Mhmm, not convinced on this one. I agree that you can work out the probability of Arsenal v Swansea taking place by Arsenal losing multiplied by Swansea losing but I disagree that you calculate the probability of them losing by 1 minus Arsenal winning.

Like I said I did not account for the draws next weekend, mainly because I was quickly working out who was more likely to play on GW29 and you need to wait two GWs to find out the result of replays anyway. The probability of Chelsea going through is certainly higher than those figures indicate (draw is 5/2 and they would be slight favourites in a home replay) but the probability of them playing on GW29 weekend is still higher than Man City playing and much higher than either Liverpool or Sunderland.

The purpose here is to show that investing in Chelsea assets is a lot wiser than in Liverpool if you want 11 out in GW29 if you HAVE to make a transfer this week. I was not trying to predict the 5th round results to two decimal places 😉

But yeah, there is that. Like I said, it is mainly for those of us who may have to use their FT just to get 11 out this week (well, 11 that are not Palace players away to Arsenal anyway...!)

MCI v AVL & ARS v SWA cannot be moved to midweek in GW29 because of Champions League. At this stage, all the other matches could possibly be moved to midweek.

      Buk,

Calculation mistake: the possibility of swansea not go through and arsenal not go through should be:

      (1-15.38%) x (1-41.16%) = 49.8%

maybe the calculation for Liv and Sun need a recalculation, thanks
