Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard grab the goals as Liverpool edge past Sunderland at Anfield. Adam Johnson climbs off the bench to play a part in the visitors’ consolation strike. Nikica Jelavic nets again for Hull, whilst the defensive worries build for West Ham ahead of a tough run of matches:

Sturridge and Gerrard Hog the Anfield Headlines
Whilst Luis Suarez had to make do with no more than a mere assist in last night’s narrow win over Sunderland, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard grabbed a goal apiece as Brendan Rodgers’ side won for the seventh game in succession. It’s four goals in four now for Gerrard, whose dead-ball abilities came to the fore yet again against Sunderland, with the 9.4-priced midfielder finding the net from a superbly taken free-kick.

Maximum bonus points for both goal scorers will have pleased their owners even further, whilst Gerrard’s growing ownership will also be relieved with his failure to earn a yellow card. The Reds’ skipper, who sits on nine bookings for the season, still has to navigate the next three league matches without picking up another caution – fall foul of the referee’s wrath and he’ll earn a two-match ban.

Sterling’s Appeal Waning
Elsewhere in the Merseysiders midfield, Raheem Sterling was benched for the third game in four since Brendan Rodgers moved to a diamond formation behind Suarez and Sturridge. The youngster had previously started 15 straight league matches from Gameweek 13-27 but has found himself a peripheral figure as Rodgers turns to Philippe Coutinho as his chief creator at the tip of the diamond. With Spurs, City and Chelsea in their next five fixtures, Liverpool’s defensive prospects are somewhat dented and with Sterling looking unlikely to guarantee game time, the Reds’ appeal looks limited to their premium-priced trio for the run-in.

Poyet’s Change of Tactics Leaves Johnson Benched
The wide man’s owners will be worried by a turn of events which saw him omitted from the starting line-up for the first time since Gameweek 20 last night. Gus Poyet’s decision to shift to 3-5-2 in order to stifle the hosts’ attack saw Emanuel Giacherrini handed a rare start, with Johnson afforded just 30 minutes to make a difference at Anfield. Encouragingly, he did just that – emerging from the bench to supply the assist for Ki Sung-Yeung’s consolation and with Sunderland still left with five home games still to follow, the Black Cats boss will be expected to re-install Johnson to his first XI as his side look to go on the offensive.

West Ham’s Resilience Slipping
Last night’s 2-1 win over Hull means the Hammers have failed to produce a clean sheet in the last six. Having been dropped against Stoke two Gameweeks ago for Winston Reid, James Collins, who produced an impressive 36 points between Gameweeks 23-26, was once again handed a start by his manager but the centre-back hobbled off just eight minutes into the game and has now emerged as a doubt for the weekend. Reid is also believed to be a doubt, with reports suggesting he missed last night’s match with a stomach bug. Despite James Chester’s calamitous own goal handing the Hammers a much needed victory, it’s clear that there’s better defensive value lying elsewhere from Upton Park at the moment – with Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and City still to follow, many will be looking elsewhere for budget backline options.

Jelavic Nets Again
A somewhat fortuitous goal helped the Croatian take his tally to four strikes since arriving at the KC in the winter transfer window. Priced at 6.7, Jelavic squares up to Stoke and Swansea next before a Gameweek 34 blank – following that, Steve Bruce’s side have Fulham and a double Gameweek 37 which may bring their assets back into consideration. The Tigers must do without Allan McGregor for the next two matches, though – he will miss the next couple of league after picking up his second red card of the season last night.

I have a dilemma as to who to replace Nolan with?

    A) Nolan to AJ (two DGW, possible risk on starts)
    B) Nolan to Eriksen (big fan of Eriksen, gametime risk)
    C) Nolan to Barkley (theoretical extra game, huge gametime risk, frees up funds to bring in Aguero)
    D) Nolan to Mirallas (not a big fan, but likely less risky than Barkley)

I think Eriksen is the right choice, but my lack of trust in Sherwood to play the right team is what is holding me back.

Why? Nolan is playing Sunderland. I'd save and get rid next GW. Neither of those options really stand out to me.

what about mutch or ki to free up funds?

who do you plan to have for gw 34? lukaku + coleman + baines could be good which would be 3 everton, ruling out mirallas and barkley.

not sure on AJ or Eriksen as both are risks it seems but either could be a good option.

I was looking at Nolan > Barkley this weekend. Nolan hasn't done anything for weeks so not sure even keeping him for Sunderland is worth it. On the other hand, Barkley is in top form and playing Fulham who are total crap.

Assuming Aguero is fit.....who from your frontlines is making way?

Lukaku - has a DGW as well.
Suarez - is untouchable really unless you are making a last ditch attempt to catch a ML leader
Sturridge - keeps scoring...a risk taking him out.
Rooney - if you have him has a blank and less team surgery value wise.
Dzeko - big funds upgrade, so likely need major team surgery.

    Sturridge for me I think

So I'm prob only trying to convince myself but with Palace having zero attacking threat do people think Haz might only get 60ish with CL midweek. Can see Jose doing his 1-0 shut up shop tactic.

Thing is, despite getting yet another red arrow I've regained the money league by 1pt with 3rd only 19 behind. Brining Haz back in seems logical to cover them both but i don't want to waste it on that just yet if I don't have to.

He may come on as sub vs Arsenal at best

If Pellegrini has any sense he will play him from the bench for the next 3/4 games to get him up to speed.

I wouldn't care much for getting Studge or Lallana anymore, if it is for a hit. Hazard seems indispensable, so I would prefer him.

However, your midfield is so cheap I don't know who I would sell for Hazard, so maybe you could actually use a differential and get in Eriksen and Schürrle instead (offload Sterling and AJ). It's not said that they wouldn't outscore Hazard and Lallana in these last matches. I think they will.

I get it that you are trying to play it safe and guarantee you'll get the points your opponents get. I'm just myself always thinking of getting as many points as possible and see that you got better options than playing it conservative. What if you getting Lallana makes them buy Eriksen and he outscores Lallana?

Yes, i am a bit useless with TV, and am bearing that burden now. I must admit i looked at eriksen lambert and schurrle. The only problem is rotation risk? but then they are in great form.

Yes you are so right. I guess I need to just go with whomever i think will score the most and i can afford without obliterating my team.

thank you, you have given me much food for thought.

I think maybe (a), but Who would you bring Hazard in for if you went for him? I'd say he's the essential one but definitely need to keep gerrard and yyt in that midfield otherwise not worth the swap for a -4 really. Rooney Suarez and Lukaku is solid up front, sturridge is ace but you should be cool with what you have I reckon!

People who log onto FPL once a week and transfer in the player who scored well last week. They don't invest time researching stats, fixtures, rotation strategies, injury tables etc etc

That way of playing has worked very well this season 🙂

A lad in work who usually finishes upper mid-table in our work league is winning it with ease this year and in the top 100 overall. Yet, he doesn't come on here and rarely does transfers unless his player are injured.

When you look at his team, it just has all the obvious players, e.g. if front line is:

    Yaya Gerrard Hazard Lallana Barkley
    Suarez Sturridge Adebayor

I think his last transfers were Ramsey to Lallana when Ramsey got injured and bringing in Ade a while ago. He has held Barkley throughout his rotation, etc, and now been rewarded for it. hasn't really taken any account of the DGW, etc

Does he know something we don't or is it just a freak season for him?

My ML is exactly the same, hardly makes transfers (has half of what i've done) but has the usual suspects (Coleman, Yaya, Lallana, Gerrard, Hazard etc) while i've been scrambling round for differentials.

Interesting question -- just looked at those prices and that is a pretty affordable team. I wonder if the pricing this year has been a bit skewed with Bale being gone, RVP being out. The FPL prices are supposed to make it very difficult to load up on all the obvious top performers but maybe that didn't happen?

Most here are sheep and after a gameweek you know which players ppl are gonna prop for, it's the ones that suddenly scored a brace.
