Our final article on Group C runs the rule over the first team to qualify for this yearโ€™s tournament, Japan. Alberto Zaccheroniโ€™s men get their campaign underway with a showdown against Ivory Coast on Sunday June 15, then take on Greece four days later at 11pm before a final encounter with Colombia on Tuesday June 24 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

Japanโ€™s form during their first qualifying group was far from impressive. Drawn in a four-team group along with North Korea, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, they finished second to the latter after winning three and drawing one of their six fixtures. Their displays picked up significantly thereafter, though. Up against Australia, Jordan, Oman and Iraq, they finished at the summit, winning five and drawing a couple of their eight fixtures. Zaccheroniโ€™s side found the net on 16 occasions, conceding just five times and registering four clean sheets.

Most Starts Eiji Kawashima, Yasuhito Endo (8), Shinji Ozazaki, Yasuyuki Konno, Yuto Nagatomo, Makoto Hasebe, Ryoichi Maeda (7), Maya Yoshida, Keisuke Honda, Shinji Kagawa (6)

Most Goals Keisuke Honda (5),Shinji Ozazaki, Ryoichi Maeda (3), Shinji Kagawa, Yuzo Kurihara (2)

The Key Targets

Japan will be looking to improve upon their record in last yearโ€™s Confederations Cup in Brazil, where the tasted defeat in all three of their games against the hosts, Italy (unluckily losing 4-3) and Mexico. Since then, theyโ€™ve won the East Asian Cup and played a further 12 friendlies โ€“ a 2-2 draw with Holland and 3-2 win over Belgium in November highlights their capabilities and, whilst a 4-2 triumph over New Zealand also underlined their ongoing problems at the back, theyโ€™ll be hoping yesterdayโ€™s 1-0 win over Cyprus is an indication they are picking up in resilience.

As the stats above show, Zaccheroniโ€™s side โ€“ set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation โ€“ is a relatively settled one, with 10 players starting six or more of the second qualifying group. In defence, attacking full-backs Yuto Nagatomo and Atsuto Uchida are the likeliest source of returns. The former, in particular, excelled last season, chipping in with five goals and six assists for Inter Milan and is available for just 4.7 in in FantasyiTeam, whilst Uchida (at 5.0) has recovered from injury after playing 17 of Schalkeโ€™s 34 league games and scored the winner against the Cypriots yesterday. Centre-backs Yasuyuki Konno and Maya Yoshida (4.8 and 4.7 in FantasyiTeam) are equally as nailed-on but offer less in terms of attacking potential.

In the double-pivot, Yasuhito Endo and Makoto Hasebe are the preferred pairing, though the latter featured as a second-half sub yesterday after recovering from injury โ€“ Toshihiro Aoyama or Hotaru Yamaguchi also offer options in the defensive midfield positions.

Fantasy managers will be far more drawn to their attacking midfield options, though. Despite the fact that Keisuke Honda and Unitedโ€™s Shinji Kagawa have struggled for game time at their respective clubs, they both remain key men in Zaccheroniโ€™s system, with the Milan man utilised in โ€œthe holeโ€ behind a lone striker. Honda notched five times during the qualifiers and looked to be number one for spot-kicks, though Kagawa scored a penalty in a recent friendly win over New Zealand whilst Honda was on the pitch. Coming in at 5.9 and 5.7 respectively in FantasyiTeam, they look likely to pick up most of the Fantasy interest from those willing to invest in Zaccheroniโ€™s squad.

The Long Shots

Shinji Ozazaki is nailed-on down the right of the 4-2-3-1 and played every match of the qualifiers. Classified as a forward in FantasyiTeam, and priced at 6.9, heโ€™s likely to be overlooked due to the cheaper options afforded by Honda and Kagawa, though with three goals to his name during qualifying, heโ€™s more than capable of producing.

Uncertainty surrounds the lone forward role, however. Ryoichi Maeda started all but one of the qualifiers but failed to make the 23-man squad โ€“ it seems likely that one of Yoichiro Kakitani or Yuya Osako (5.9 and 5.8 in FantasyiTeam) will lead the line instead, judging by recent friendlies. Kakitani has now started four of the last six, producing a goal and assist against Belgium, whilst Osako has featured in the first XI in two of the last six, delivering a goal and assist in the draw with Holland.

The sad news for those boring farts that don't like a decent party is Irish people can party without you ๐Ÿ˜‰

                          ๐Ÿ˜† A good one.

Do I see the drinking buddies of the beaten up Irish guy coming to rescue? No worries, all we need to do is to wait you spot the first bar on the way and you'll never get past it standing on your own feet.

It's precisely that the decent looking women are lacking because of the drunken Irish and Scots, and we the rest of the men prefer decent looking women to drunken Irish and Scots.

Time for me to leave now. It's not fair to insult your nationality when I avoid telling my own.

That's by the way, for the same reason why I don't link to my team: I know my rivals are here too, and they know I'm here, so I don't want them to figure out who I am so that they could spy my thinking.

Oh, by the way, I have nothing against Irish, have enjoyed my time drinking with the Irish too. I only subscribed to fight and picked my side by the first dig that came in mind.

That's not the Irish way cnn only scumbags kick people when they are down. In Ireland we like to give people a kicking, have a few more drinks with them and then have a bit of a rumble in the jungle again before we go home all safe and sound with nothing but a few bruises and a pending hangover to show for a great night.

Not sure if I should be defending Irish soccer or Irish sport in general here but we have got the fastest field sport in the world with a club in nearly every parish (GAA) so that we have that and we can compete competitively in other sports like soccer, rugby, golf etc is damn impressive for a small island country.

      I hate silly season.

Every season the transfer window is so over hyped by journalists making shit up that any eventual transfers are nearly a non-event. I don't mind stories that have some truth but I swear that most sports writers load up a new season of Fifa 14, look at what transfers are made by different clubs and then report them as a "done deal according to our sources".

In defence of most journalists: the need to fill the back pages continues into the post-season when there are no games to be covered. Same goes for online sources who need clickbait stories to generate advertising revenue.

National and local journalists are under pressure from their editors to deliver a story, even if they know that there's nothing much to say at certain periods (such as now). They will invariably file reports that contain a lot of hedging phrases i.e. 'club X has made initial enquiries about player Y' which get beefed up or edited out by the sub-editors.

Basically, all journalists know that during the transfer window they are going to be lied to:

        - by players' agents trying to get their player a move

        - by buying clubs trying to create uncertainty about a player who is still in contract at another club

        - by selling clubs who are either trying to deny that a player is leaving or (often) talking up non-existent offers to push up the price.

I've got no respect for sites such as 'Caught Offside' & the 'Daily Mail' who just invent stuff or (increasingly) the Mirror who scattergun all manner of stories (Draxler to Arsenal three times now!) and then noisily demand credit for the few occasions when they accidentally getting it right.

But the rest of the journalists are - highly reluctantly - trying to fill a need for information generated by sites, well, just like FFS. Look how much of the last few weeks' content on this forum has been filled with people copying and pasting stories from the web about 'done deals' and pretending to be 'in the know' (whatever that means).

And I can appreciate and understand that of course. It's the lazy journalism as you allude to from the likes of the Daily Mail or Mirror and websites like Caught Offside. I wouldn't mind a journo contacting a few agents or clubs and getting lied to but reporting it anyway, I understand that. It's the ones who don't make the effort and simply make stuff up that is very frustrating for me.

I certainly take your point though Portsmouth, you tend to be quite in the know about a lot of that sort of stuff.

I'm not sure, but couldn't these journalists just fill the back pages with some in depth articles about clubs, players, leagues and so on instead of all transfer speculation crap? It's a good time to think about what they would like to read/write about around football, and make the needed interviews/research and write those articles, now that people might have more interest in them as there is no actual football going on.

I wish that were the case. So do the journalists, who (I know) would like to write those types of articles. But what 'sells', i.e. persuades people at a newsstand to purchase the newspaper or click on a story is a scandalous headline. Every time.

I've tried on a couple of occasions here to explain a couple of complex situations regarding players and clubs, only to log on two hours later to find it distorted / reduced into "PB says he's definitely signed - done deal". There's a need among large sections of the football-going public for simple truths that rarely exist.

Sports editors and above them newspaper editors are making decisions based on what they know will sell to their target readership. It's up to football fans to change their reading habits if they want something better. Magazines such as WSC, The Blizzard, 11 Freunde, Ballesterer exist. Journalists like writing for them.

But what sells the most? The Sun. Which website gets the most clicks? Daily Mail. If you don't want that kind of reporting, sporting or otherwise, then don't buy it or click on it.

I know Athletico had a great season but people buying their players for upwards of thirty million is madness. They did so well because they were part of a drilled system that pressed and harried and played direct .. They're not world class players who can fit into any team seamlessly and make a huge difference with their skill alone.

This is just what regularly happens with teams like this. You see, there are these crazy clubs who buy the best players of smaller clubs of the season X. Then after season X+1, they think those best players who now, all brought to smaller roles in the bigger clubs, no longer are the best, and they buy again the best players of the smaller clubs from that season. And so on. Always a significant number of biggest clubs ends up paying heavily for players worse than what they already have, and then they wonder why they won't perform. That's how it goes.

Courtois is obviously an extraordinarily great GK, though. He may well end up being one of the best of all time.

I'd be doubtful on the merits of any of the Atletico defenders tbh. The reason they were so good last season was the system they played was ultra defensive with every forward and midfield player working their nads off to close down the opposition. I am sure the likes of this guy, godin, the LB Chelsea were linked with above and Courtois are all good players but I think they might be overpriced due to their excellent defensive record last season.

Anyone got any decent punts on the World Cup? I'm looking at the winner / top scorer combos which look tasty - see below. I can't see beyond Brazil/Arg winning it with Messi/Aguero top scorers. Arg have an easy group and easier draw so Messi/Aguero for top scorer I think. Brazil will prob win it but tougher draw so less easy games to rack up the goals.

            Brazil & Aguero = 66/1
            Brazil & Messi = 33/1
            Arg & Aguero = 50/1
            Arg & Messi = 16/1

Also think Chile could get 2nd in their group with holland and spain. 17/2 for Chile in q final. Hmm...

            Cheers !

never know with a country who didnt call-up nasri but surely they'll go benzema up top. that's what my thought it based on really, if him and ribery turn up with the legs they have in that centre midfield they could do anything

You'll probably only get a couple of decent seasons out of Dani Alves before he filters out, he's 31, surprisingly. Whereas Marquinhos is up and coming, only 20 years old and a typical Barcelona centre-back, fast, technically brilliant yet not very physical(or not physical enough).

Exactly. One starts to be past it, and has never excelled defensively, one is one of the most promising defenders of his generation, already doing it on the top level despite being just some 20-year-old.

Not at all. Rather they are too late reacting to the problems they've had in defence for a couple of seasons now. They desperately need to renew that defence now as they failed to do that before despite clear signs of decay being there for all to read.

Plus Montoya is a natural replacement for Alves, he's just signed a new deal till 2018 so I expect him to become number one right-back next season.

Alba-Pique-Marquinhos-Montoya weaker than Alba-Pique-Masherano-Alves. I think Marquinhos is a great signing but i think this deal is not so good for Barça.

Yeah. Either that, or then his new contract extension makes no sense. Montoya is 23 now, it is the time for him to be either a first team player or leave Barcelona.

alves has built a career largely on incredibly intensity of running, age therefore is an issue, or at least will be.
guess value largely depends on how much a team needs you. barcelona are more desperate for a centre back, whilst i think montoya and adriano make less dodgy replacements than mascherano and bartra

If anyone happens to be playing the telegraph game, Okazaki is classed as a midfielder and comes in very cheap. Also, he was top scorer in Asian qualifying with 8 goals, not 3, when taking both rounds into account (Honda didn't play in any of the earlier matches and got all 5 of his in the last round).

One of my dogs is a lab. Great dog around kids. She functions simply as a life support machine for her stomach.

guys, wasn't feeling de bruyne as much in the middle the other day (fantasy wise this is). depending on the scoring of the game of course, but overall can't see as many goals from him there. just the way it appeared in that one game, he took a relatviely deep back-seat starting attacks as opposed to getting in there and finishing them.
still 2 friendlies to go of course for more hints. looking more modric than mata so far though

Vorm by a mile. Not sure Migs will accept a bench role though.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

                          The Pochettino effect.

Spurs have notoriously been a tricky team for us Fantasy managers. Prone to swapping managers quickly as well as rotating players thanks to Europa League commitments many a Fantasy manager has found themselves left with a non playing Spurs player or misfiring striker in their team.

Can Pochettino turn it around? What players can he realistically bring in? Which current Spurs players do you think will fit in with his management style? Are Adebayor and Eriksen Pochettino players?

Eriksen, Vertongen, Paulinho, Dembele, Sandro, Rose, Walker maybe even Soldado are Pochettino players for me

I don't see soldado as a pochetino type player. He dropped Lambert when he thought his work rate was dropping due to too many games. Soldado is not exactly known for his workrate up top

I think he'll work hard next season if given a chance again. He can just do his work right up top, he won't exactly have to track back or anything

Yeah I hope so, I think he could be a real asset to a team where he gets to play as a proper no10 but I am doubtful that he will fit in with what Pochetino wants.

I must say it shows the class of him that he was able to adapt to the higher tempo and quality of the EPL as a lot of players from other leagues never seem to manage. It helped that he was young and willing to put in the graft to learn imo

He won't last two seasons. Spurts won't make top four either. A number of Soton games he didn't go for the win that was there for the taking. His players seemed shot-shy too often, relying on a Lallana Brazilain-esque move to score...

It will turn out another bad move for a settled manager that had it all at a slightly lower club. Think Big Sam going to Toon from Bolton, and of course Moyes most recently...

Eriksen could have a "massive" season if he plays week in week out.

erisken and ade should be fine...I think he will bring in quality players, as exhibited by his captures of lovren and wanyama last season...I imagine spurs will be better than this season, but im still sceptical of a top 4 finish considering the quality they are competing with

Lallana seems like a very Spurs sort of player, and the defence could be great.

But the best thing about this could actually be to keep Sterling nailed on at Liverpool.

I wonder what funds he'll get after their spending spree last summer, I know the Bale transfer paid for most of it but they've got a pretty big squad & will have to sell a few which wont be easy

it wouldnt surprise me if he has to make do with what he's got (for the most part anyway)

It's good news for us, but seeing as best chance of CL is winning Europa, none of their options stand out. Last season they used second string in it, probably won't this time

do wonder if okazaki could be the CF, appears they whacked him up front in a friendly last year and he scored a brace, albeit against latvia. if the main centre forward from qualifying didnt even make the squad, coupled with okazaki's club season up front there must be a chance*, although i guess it could also depends on who else they can find to play the right wing role instead.

*i do acknowledge there have been many successive games since where he's always right wing

We could see him on the right wing but my money is still on either him or Kakitani playing up top. They have a good few options so it depends on what they want on the right wing, Kiyotake is a good winger so I'd anticipate him starting there.

I think Kiyotake will take his place on the wing, Okazaki up front. He has competition from Kakitani and ลŒkubo though.

Here are a few choice quotes from Redknapp on Remy, Rio Ferdinand & Lampard:

"Loic has done well at Newcastle," he said. "It would be difficult to get him back here. I think he's looking to play Champions League next year somewhere.

"He's had a great season at Newcastle - he's certainly worth much more than we paid for him when we brought him here."

"Again, I love Rio, I signed them both as 15-year-olds but the chances of getting them to QPR are very slim."
