Friday evening’s trio of fixtures get underway with a vital Group D clash between Italy and Costa Rica at 5pm. England fans will be paying particular attention to this one, knowing that a draw would be enough to eliminate the Three Lions after back-to-back losses in their opening couple of fixtures:

Italy: Buffon; Abate, Darmian, Barzagli, Chiellini; Motta, De Rossi, Pirlo; Candreva, Balotelli, Marchisio

Costa Rica: Navas; Gamboa, Duarte, Gonzalez, Umana, Diaz; Ruiz, Tejeda, Borges, Bolanos; Campbell

Cesare Prandelli continues with a 4-3-3 formation for tonight’s match. The Italy boss makes a trio of alterations from the XI that faced England – Gianluigi Buffon recovers from injury to feature between the posts as Salvator Sirigu drops out, Ignazio Abate comes in for Gabriel Paletta at the back, whilst Thiaggo Motta gets the nod ahead of Marco Veratti in the centre of the park. Up front, Mario Balotelli and Claudio Marchisio will be hoping to find the net for the second match in succession as Prandelli’s side close in on a place in the last 16.

Unsurprisingly, Jorge Luis Pinto make no changes from the starting XI that shocked Uruguay 3-1 in the opener. This sees Costa Rica line up in a 5-4-1 formation, with Arsenal’s Joel Campbell leading the line once again after serving up a goal and assist against the South Americans.

We then move onto Group E for the later two games. First up at 8pm, Switzerland and France go head-to-head as both sides attempt to build on victories in their respective openers and strengthen their chances of winning the group. The Swiss have decisions to make in the final third after both goals in the 2-1 win over Ecuador came courtesy of substitutes Admir Mehmedi and Haris Seferovic. Elsewhere, Ricardo Rodriguez will be looking to replicate his pair of assists from left-back and both Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka offer potential in the attacking midfield three. Karim Benzema’s two goals and assist proved pivotal for the French against Honduras, while Mathieu Valbuena, Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba will be desperate to open their Fantasy accounts.

The final match of the evening sees Honduras and Ecuador attempt to bounce back from their opening defeats. An ill-disciplined Honduras offered little in the way of attacking potential in last week’s loss to France and will be of little interest to Fantasy managers, though the South Americans will be optimistic that frontmen Enner Valencia and Felipe Caicedo and wingers Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero can make the difference and spark their campaign back into life in what looks a straightforward game for Reinaldo Rueda’s side.

If that useless old muppet doesn't get sacked after England finish bottom of this group, then we will never improve. It's not the players that are the problem, it's the lack of understanding of tactics by the manager and how to utilise different players. He just replaces like for like and does change tactics. Was great when football was archaic but not now.

With the exception of Capello, all the managers have been crap. Capello failed cos he looked at stars over role, the bloody 'golden generation' all that crap. Waddle was spot on in his rant, but he should have outed this useless manager, the same manager who nearly got Liverpool relegated and paid money for Paul Konchesky.

No way, capello was awful. He tried to get them playing a completely different game of possession and got angry when they couldn't change the habits of a lifetime in a two week training camp. Hindsight you have to say Sven was the best of recent managers - consistently got us out of groups. Hodgson is a good manager if you are happy being the underdog, defending solidly and playing on the break, but that wasn't good enough for Liverpool and won't satisfy England. Hes trying to change his spots and play attacking football but just doesn't know how. No idea who should take over . Probably should get someone like Paul lambert in as a number two for the next tournament and try to bring him on (just being realistic about who'd want the job, obviously would Mourinho or someone).

Good, then they have all been crap. Paul Lambert? Insult to injury. I'd rather any manager who plays attacking football. Rodgers would be a dream.

Rodgers wont leave liverpool for a few years. The main thing for me is they should think ahead now and starting developing a good number two.

Agree, it's been different in the past and more could be laid at the door of the players, but the tactics, team selection and subs have been very poor and that is only one man's fault

          FFS WC Update

          Group B

McD GW1 result have been confirmed following a "slight" delay, however can confirm the results were:

          Chile 2 v 3 Australia
4 clear winners the biggest was via Roscola's 33 point win v Cylus11, whilst the Chileans DM 127pt was matched by Captain Innsie however the 2 "goals" proved insufficient as Nice to Finally Michu avenged his Spanish sacking who along with theBoose13 tied the game at 2v2 - the winner effectively coming from Kofloks slender 1 pt win over Zan Keroski.

Interestingly Chile actually outscored their victors by 565 v 539 but its Australia that took the 4 points!

          Spain 2 v3 Holland
Again 4 clear winners Spain went 2 up through good scores from JuanCarlos and Bowstring on Trout but the Dutch hit back icon pulled 1 back and No Ass Bergkamp is a Legend smashed Thomass by 26pts to level the match. It came down to the Dutch underdog asPompeyfan took the scalp over FPL winner / legend Spidermatt by just 5 points to clinch the 3 points.

GW2 is well underway with the two losers facing off to avoid potential elimination:

          Chile V Spain
          Sherlock Holmes V Spiderm4tt
          Zan Keroski V Thomass(c)
          Roscola V Loco Abreu
          GTS V Bowstrings on Trout
          Innsie V JuanCarlos-- merczi89

Whilst the two winners fave each other with the winner guaranteed progression:

          Australia V Holland
Nice to F Michu V Pompeyfan
Koflok V No Association Bergkamp is Legend
          cylus11 V iCon
          theBoose13 V Snake Juice
          Aaron Ramessi V Saniul (c)

Know the McD site seems to have improved - hopefully all can enjoy the competition.

You may want to reconsider given that fasting month is going to start exactly at knockout stage. I had submit related analysis articles earlier this month. Here are the key factor in knockout stage anyways:

Every knockout stage matches until final are held before sunset (Guide for open/break fasting time) local time. 01:00 PM, 04:00 PM, and 05:00 PM.

We may give attention to match which are held in 05:00 PM because in Brazil, sunset at 28th June – 13th July will occur around 05:18 PM – 05:24 PM. Let’s say a player is still fasting in first half, but he can regain his energy after that. Another likely scenario is player who fasting will introduced in second half.

Following matches are held at 05:00 PM Brazilian time, and if we put teams that including player(s) who are have possibilities to fast around matchday, we can see these scenarios:

*note following teams I listed are based on lot of researches around google regarding teams which have players who have possibility to fasting in Ramadan, you can simply add/reduce teams as you like based on this template.

            Round of 16:
            Match 50, 28th June: 1C vs 2D
            Match 52, 29th June: 1D vs 2C
            Possible candidate(s): Cote D’Ivoire

            Match 54, 30th June: 1G vs 2H
            Match 56, 1st July: 1H vs 2G
            Possible candidates: Germany/Ghana vs Belgium/Algeria

            Quarter-final:
            Match 57, 4th July: Winner of Match 49 (1A vs 2B) vs Match 50 (1C vs 2D)
            Match 59, 5th July: Winner of Match 51 (1B vs 2A) vs Match 52 (1D vs 2C)
Both possible candidates: Croatia vs Cote D’Ivoire

            Semi-final:
            Match 61, 8th July: Winner of Match 57 (W49 vs W50) vs Winner of Match 58 (W53 vs W54)
            Match 62, 9th July: Winner of Match 59 (W51 vs W52) vs Winner of Match 60 (W55 vs W56)
            Both possible candidates: Croatia/Cote D’Ivoire vs Iran/Nigeria/Switzerland/France/Germany/Ghana/Belgium/Algeria

            3rd Place:
            Match 63, 12th July: Loser of match 61 (W57 vs W58) vs Loser of match 62 (W59 vs W60)
            Both possible candidates: Croatia/Cote D’Ivoire vs Iran/Nigeria/Switzerland/France/Germany/Ghana/Belgium/Algeria

In other side, if we sort countries based on their chance to play near sunset (Round of 16 until 3rd Place Match):
            mentioned 4 times – Cote D’Ivoire
3 – Germany, Ghana, Belgium, Algeria, Croatia
2 – Iran, Nigeria, Switzerland, France

so, among teams which are likely to have players that have possibilities to fasting around matchday, Cote D'Ivoire players should be in advantage on their schedule.

i have list of (likely) players (but incomplete) as well if you interested.
i'm not playing WC fantasy football though 🙂

I accidentally subbed out karnezis's 12 points yesterday and was gutted, only to feel even worse when I saw my second keeper, Swiss bengalio, conceded 5.

Then checked the scores and BOOM - penalty save, 8 save points.. 14 points! Get in my son!

Very true - what choice of first-class established defensive pairings did Roy have to choose from? Until a premier league team has a a back four of English players (or at least two teams have pairings) our defence is always going to be problematic. I would say look to the Championship teams, but there's not much on offer there...

and Uruguay haven't looked good defensively - yes they dominated in attack, but how do you think they'll fair against a side with a strong attack?

The clubs are partly to blame, they are scared to field young English players as too much emphasis is placed on results. Results = Huge amounts of money and not many in the Prem wants to take unnecessary risks on young talent regardless of how good they "may" become.

I dont think its as bad as you are all making out, England lost to 2 decent teams in Italy and Uruguay. o.k. so Italy didn't turn up today so it makes them look crap but on a good day they can beat the best. You lost out by one goal both games and weren't exactly played off the pitch. On another day, Rooney could have had 3 goals and an assist in 2 games. such small margins with huge implications. Nobody gave Costa Rica any hope and thats a lesson for everyone, underestimate others at your peril

Football Association Greg Dyke has confirmed that Roy Hodgson will stay on despite England's worst World Cup performance in 56 years.

Mitigating reasons. This is by far the hardest group we've ever been in. I'd say that 2010 was the worst World Cup performance in 52 years

I actually think the team is moving in the right direction (in term sod style of play).

Definitely some positives from this tournament - unlike 2010.

+1 - Hodgson hardly had a great choice available - untested youngsters or those due to retire, and a real dearth of decent English defenders. If we'd been pooled with the Greeks, Japanese, Honduras, USA, Ecuador,

I feel like we played as well as Uruguay and Italy, if not better.

Unfortunately, the Uruguay game came down to the two headline strikers. Rooney had three good chances and took one. Suarez scored two from two. If we swapped talisman, we'd have smashed them IMO

think rooney would edge giroud. cahill is better than sakho. baines is better than evra now. surely gerrard would beat sissoko into the team?

sturridge and benzema's domestic goal record this season was pretty similar i think.

That performance was all about bad attitude, that's never acceptable. Look at the likes of Australia and Costa Rica, they have nowhere near that level of talent but every one of them gives all they have....you can't fault that..
