With the World Cup on pause for a couple of days, we take time to delve into the domestic data from the 2013/14 season. In the first of a series of features focussing on the KPI statistics in the Members area, we assess the most improved forwards over the season gone by, listing the main players in accordance with goal attempts from inside the box:

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or change in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain each player’s form, whether it be an improvement or decrease in displays on the pitch. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

For the purpose of this series of articles, we analyse the previous two seasons as a means of comparison:

    used up all my budget, like the team but would like a second playing goalkeeper, where should I cut? Yesterday Bolanos was suggested but that only frees up 2.5m which isn't enough to turn a 1m keeper into a playing one..maybe Gonzalez too since I don't see Costa Rica putting up a big fight against Netherlands..

    or maybe chill it in midfield and stack up in defense?

    Evening. In FPL, we often caution ourselves not to chase last week's points -- instead we want to see whose underlying stats might be giving us a sense of an upturn in form so we can jump on bandwagons early or stay the course with players who will eventually come good.

    But in the McFIFA game, I am wondering if last week's points might actually be the best measure of future returns as well, since the ways to earn points that are less capricious than mere goals and assists (and the baps that often accompany them in FPL) like blocked shots, recovered balls, passes into the box are already rewarded with actual points and are probably more consistent and therefore easier to predict, since they are the player's style of play which has contributed to their team's progression to the QF.

    If that's the case, I wonder if a load up on maybe 12 of the top 15-20 highest scoring outfield players max is the way to go, since they will likely produce similar returns in the next match. I liked the margin of error that mass substitutions brought us in the earlier rounds, but I don't know if that still holds.

    Is anyone else going all premium with a dead bench?

      I like the 1-6-5-3 model (that's 15 players)

      it gives you flexibility with your formation, the ability to sub out players who don't perform and still means you can have premium players...

        That's what I had but at this point I think we might end up leaving midpriced players on the bench if we can identify the premium, consistent talents as NABIL says below.

            Yeah, I switch back and forth between 4-5-3 and 5-4-3, though

            Luiz VDB Fernandez Hummels makes me feel pretty secure in back. I might want to spend more on an explosive fifth midfielder in case he goes off (like Sneijder or Oscar who have yet to hit their strides).

              the thing is the mids are so much more risky...if you have 5-6 big defenders you are almost guaranteed double figures from all of them

              the best mids in the game are JRod and Mascherano....they rest are very risky, whereas DVB, Luiz, Hummels etc. score big every time

            I know Muller has returned in every game he's played, but scoring 10pts v France seems extremely unlikely, and for 3m less I can get Yepes v Brazil, who is bound to score 10pts t least, even more in ET is needed...

            Way better value in a 5-4-1, 5-3-2 imo...

              yeah I agree...last round I ended up with a 5-4-1 and got 131, thanks to a whopping 56 points from my defenders...you may be right on that one to invest more money into safe bets like the defenders 🙂

                But don't you want the potential explosiveness from attackers who also get the peripheral points as an option? I won't be rotating those 4 core defenders so I like the idea of rotating 8 attackers for the remaining 6 spots to see if I can catch a monster haul...

                  That's the only advantage of spending 3+m more on an attacker, the chance of catching a monster score, but I think as the tournament progress the chances of that become slimmer...

      Definitely for defenders and defensive midfielders I think past performance is best indicator of future performance.

      If chasing attacking points and also picking GKs for save points think underlying stats are still useful

    Great line of D, but then again only Zapata is playing on Day 1. Make sure you watch the games and change your Defs on Day 2 accordingly, or else some big points are going to be wasted!

    I've been burnt by Kroos last Round. Still a good punt, but I'd prefer Cuadrado or even KDB. Matuidi can very enigmatic, can score goals and also get sent off (almost get a red card last match). Your call.

      Very decent. I'd downgrade Tejeda and get Fernandez instead of Blind, since you already got 2 Dutch at the back.

        I think keepers rack up save points anyway and then there's always the chance of the Cillessen-Mbolhi saga from last round. 😉

          I'd rather have backup if the first guy fails to deliver.

          Cillessen is probably going to have a quiet night v Costa Rica anyways.....wouldn't be banking on too many save points there.

            True that. A backup is always good. But both Cillessen and Navas playing in the last game makes the decision a little difficult for me.

        I'm slightly leaning towards Navas now. Dutch may concede and Cillessen may not get too many saves. So the safer option probably is Navas.

    As amazingly surprising and nailbiting this WC has been, I'd admit that the top teams have mostly prevailed so far.

    Not everyday do 8 group toppers move into the QF, and even among them, except Costa Rica and partly, Netherlands, all were favorites to win the group.

    Somehow makes me feel that we will see Brazil, Netherlands, Germany and Argentina in the semifinals.

      Brazil, Netherland and probably Arg will easily proceed. Not sure abt Germany vs France. Thats for sure, every match will be low scoring, dont see anyone scoring even 3 goals.

          When I took all of my players out to bring new players, it gave me total of £50.5m budget, no idea why, maybe another fault, so instead of confirming, I reset the team and went with same team so that I dont get £50m for next round round, hopefully it will be fine this time
