West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued to restructure his first-team squad for the season ahead with the acquisition of Andre Wisdom on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool:

The 21-year-old is the sixth player to arrive at The Hawthorns since Irvine took the helm earlier this summer and, as the new manager admitted, his adaptability affords the Baggies options at the back:

“I’m delighted to welcome Andre to the club. I’ve spoken to Brendan Rodgers, who I’ve known for a very long time and who I trust implicitly. He said Andre would do a good job for us. That was reassuring. He’s a versatile lad. He’s played as a right-back for Liverpool in the Premier League last season, he also played as a full-back for Derby. He grew up as a centre-back and played on the left side of central defence for Liverpool against Preston on Saturday.”

The History

Yorkshire-born Wisdom started his career with Bradford City’s youth team before being snapped up by Liverpool at the age of 14. After progressing through the Merseysiders’ youth system, he was finally afforded a senior debut by Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13 and, after playing 22 times across all competitions, scoring once and chipping in with a pair of assists, was farmed out on loan to Derby County in October 2013.

Utilised exclusively as a right-back by Steve McLaren, Wisdom was nailed-on for the Championship outfit. Serving up a trio of assists over 37 appearances, he helped The Rams to the Wembley Play-Off Final against QPR back in May, where, despite dominating for much of the match, they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

At international level, Wisdom has represented England at every youth level, from Under-16 to Under-21, on a total of 37 occasions and has found the net three times.

The Prospects

A peripheral figure at Anfield, the move has immediately brought Wisdom onto Fantasy managers’ radars due to his budget price-tag across the Fantasy games. Available for a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.2 in the Sky Sports Fantasy game, there’s a hope that the youngster could cement a starting berth for The Baggies as Irvine looks to improve upon a dire previous season which saw the club finish just three points clear of the drop zone.

Handed a start at right-back on his debut against Sacramento Republic at the weekend, Wisdom played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 win as Irvine’s side triumphed for the fourth successive outing this summer. Whilst Fantasy suitors will be delighted with his start, the imminent arrival of Costa Rican international defender Cristian Gamboa suggests that Wisdom faces a real battle for the right-back berth as Irvine looks to strengthen following the departures of Billy Jones and Steven Reid over the summer.

However, with the 4.0-priced Chris Baird also offering an option in central midfield and right-back, the situation is far from clear right now. Whilst Irvine has cited the youngster’s versatility as key, The Baggies are not short of alternatives in central defence – new boy Joleon Lescott is favourite to get the nod after quitting champions City for the Midlands, whilst Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson and Craig Dawson are also in the mix.

Intriguingly, though, the local press reckon that the incoming Gamboa could be earmarked for an occasional role on the right of midfield. Pacier than Wisdom, he was used as a wing-back during Costa Rica’s recent World Cup campaign and could offer more from an attacking point of view – certainly, if such a scenario transpires, he could well be the best option from Irvine’s defence.

Certainly, five of West Brom’s first six home fixtures (SUN, EVE, BUR, CPL, NEW) suggest defensive returns could be on the cards, thus strengthening their appeal as cheap rotation options. Wisdom, undoubtedly, has the potential to be a very budget-friendly FPL option for the season ahead, though with a number of ifs and buts still surrounding the Baggies’ likely back-four, Fantasy managers may be best keeping a keen eye on Irvine’s intentions before acquiring the youngster with any degree of conviction.

Why are people so confident on Hazard? He is a great player, yeah. But we haven't seen him preseason yet. You could say he flopped in the WC, form didn't look too good. I am not 100% sure he will be on penalties either.

Btw, was Costa on penalties in Atletico?

using the WC and the tail end of last season isnt great to guage what will happen going forward, i agree that his form deff tailed off but its a new season, they will be fresh so anything can happen. We know when he plays he can be great especially form a FPL point of view

Look at his scores for the last 2 season, then add in the fact that Lamps has left (so he's on ALL pens), mix that with the signing of a decent forward to put away the chances he creates. And you're left with a decent fantasy pick who's possibly even under-priced.

And I don't even own him 🙂 (went Costa instead)

Why will Naismith and Mirallas let him down ?...as it stands today Naismith is about the only playable striker at Everton other than Mirallas OOP...Naismith scored 9 goals in about 17 starts for Everyon last season...whilst Mirallas started 28 of 32 games he was fit for...Either player could be a great pick if Everton don't act soon.

They've still got some money for Osvaldo to come in, though he didn't really play.

I'd imagine they'll sign a CB, at least one full back and another attacker or two, but that could only come to £30-40m.
Even with the departures their squad isn't terrible, though the defence is weak.

      Boruc
      Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Targett
      Schneiderlin, Wanyama (Cork)
Tadic, JayRod, Ward Prowse (Davis, Ramirez)
      Pelle (Gallagher)

How many people are jumping straight on Vermealen if he moves to Man Utd? And if not, what the hell is wrong with you? 😉

I can seriously make a sweet team if that one transfer goes through. It is top of my wishlist, to the point where it's one of the first things I do when I wake up - check for any new Verm to Utd rumours.

The only thing putting me off (if it happens) is that he hasn't played much premier league footie in the last two years, and if he signs, will have missed most of the pre-season.

LVG *might* want to bed him in slowly since he does have other options.

Came up with this bad boy in my quest to stray slightly from the template:

    DDG (Gilks)
    Bavies, Cavies, Huth, (Colo, 4.0)
    Sigg, Mata, Hazard, Yaya (Wanyama)
Jovetic, Rooney, Soldado (yes, for real)

I know it doesn't stray too much but there's too much value to most template players (Rooney is perennial) but I can't shake this Soldado obsession. Everyone's so caught up in Eriksen and Lamela (rightly so) but actually they take space away from any number of other mids. If last season was simply an exception in his otherwise sterling career... I dunno. Can't shake it.

Jovetic is a gamble through and through. But 3 goals and 2 assists from 368 minutes on the pitch is pretty decent...

i get the Soldado thing in a strange way, Spurs fixtures are decent and with Poch in charge we could see his potential realised with Ade a doubt. I think most others just wouldn't take what they see as an unnecessary risk when there are others who seem much safer at the same price. I would deff leave out Jovetic though until you see him getting regular gametime

So am I right in thinking that Albrighton might not be a definite starter?
And if he isn't, then his price could plummet.

I think I might err on the side of caution and go for Marney instead. I'm fairly certain he'll start after 2 decent seasons for Burnley. Who's with me?

And yeah, you are absolutely right about your thinking. Leicester play 4-4-2 generally, and they just bought Ulloa to play with Nugent. Knockaert and Mahrez played pretty well last year, and I don't see any reason why Albrighton will walk into the team.

It isn't outrageous. They have a new manager with new ideas and a stack load of notes to spend... and plenty of time to spend them. If they do SFA by the end of the transfer window then questions should be asked but all this scaremongering now is very premature.

That's football, it is a business at the end of the day.

We're used to it here in Ireland. If a young player starts performing he's snapped up. Expecting Chris Forrester to be leaving here soon if he keeps playing well 😕

its not as bad as you make it out to be, Their manager decided to leave for a bigger club, that was on the cards given how good a season they had, they have sold some young players for great (excessive prices imo) prices and brought in what look like very decent replacements.. Lambert is getting on a bit, Saints fan has seen all this before, they have grown used to it. Walcott, Oxlade, Gareth Bale and to a lesses extent. Nigel Adkins. They have also seen that the clubs has actually done well despite what appear to have been big losses. They must trust the club and the decisions that are being made. £70 odd million for 3 youngsters is great business even though it seems like they are ripping the squad up and starting all over again.

Okay, so this situation about the Gunners defence has me a bit confused..

24% has picked Debuchy (right-back starter)
    5.5m

But only 2% has Gibbs (left-back starter)
    5.5m

How is there such a big difference? With everyone talking about differentials, why has only 2% gone with Gibbs?

Because Gibbs has Monreal for competition and is often rotated, hes also v injury prone.

With Callum now there i guess Debuchy is open to it occasionally too.

I would also suggest that Debuchy is the far more proven attacking fullback. he should be expected to meaningfully outperform gibbs in terms of goals/assists/baps.
