634x258 Great Expectations

Our pre-season series returns to gather up a collection of players who carry the weight of expectancy going into the new campaign. These are targets who are expected to kick-on and grow in stature over the course of the coming season and it begins with a suitable prospect down at the Lane: Tottenham playmaker, Erik Lamela.

Snapped up by Andre Villas-Boas last summer after the departure of Gareth Bale, the Argentine arrived amidst much fanfare after finishing the 2012/13 campaign as fifth top scorer in Serie A, with 15 goals and five assists in 33 appearances for AS Roma.

It’s fair to say that Lamela failed to live up to the hype in a hugely underwhelming debut year. Over the course of an injury-hit campaign, he managed a total of three starts and six sub appearances under both Villas-Boas and his replacement Tim Sherwood. In those 361 minutes, the South American mustered a mere eight attempts on goal and created just six chances for others.

After a similarly difficult start, fellow new boy Christian Eriksen found his feet as a result of Sherwood’s attack-minded approach. The Dane served up seven goals, eight assists and 20 bonus points in his subsequent 18 appearances (an average of 6.4 points per game) over the final five months of 2013/14 to underline his capabilities as a prime Fantasy midfield asset.

So far, Eriksen’s exploits have persuaded over 14% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap him up – the ninth most popular pick so far. Despite being identically priced at 8.0, Lamela’s debut year has clearly proven a major deterrent; just 2% of managers have been willing to bring the South American into their five-man midfields. Despite that, there is growing evidence to suggest that Lamela could potentially emerge to challenge Eriksen’s output and finally live up to his billing as a goal-getting midfielder of some stature.

Key Factors

    • The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino seems to have quickly transformed Lamela’s summer form. With his compatriot at the helm, the Argentine looks a different player and, with three goals to his name, he’s Tottenham’s top scorer in pre-season so far; Eriksen, on the other hand, has relied on set-piece duties to bag his first of the summer in a 6-1 trashing of Celtic. Fundamental to Lamela’s form has been a shift in position – previously utilised out wide, he’s been afforded the role in “the hole†in recent matches and has been far more involved in his side’s attacking forays.

    • Furthermore, Lamela has backed up the idea he’s a confidence player. Despite his lofty price tag, the playmaker (when fit) was never afforded the chance to shine under either of Tottenham’s managers last term and cut a dejected figure on the rare occasion he entered the fray. After a recent friendly match, the South American confirmed he’s finally over his injury problems and is mentally refreshed for the campaign ahead:

“I had an unfortunate injury last season that kept me out of play for quite some time. In the same way, it’s helped me emotionally and morally to get better and work harder towards this season.â€

    • Pochettino’s impact on Southampton’s attackers highlights how his high pressing game is suited to the English top-flight. Adam Lallana was transformed into one of the most sought-after Fantasy midfielders in the game last term, earning 179 points in his one full season under Pochettino compared to 93 points in the previous campaign, while Jay Rodriguez scored 152 points before succumbing to knee ligament damage in April. Providing he keeps clear of the treatment room, then, Lamela could be poised to benefit from Pochettino’s tactics and finally become a legitimate Fantasy contender at the second time of asking.

    • Pochettino’s arrival will ensure Spurs move away from the two-man frontline employed by Sherwood from December onwards last season. With a 4-2-3-1 on the cards, then, there’s too much uncertainty surrounding the new manager’s preferred option for the lone forward role to gamble on their frontmen right now. There’s no doubt Emmanuel Adebayor impressed under Sherwood last time, though it remains to be seen whether he possesses the work-rate to lead the line in a high-pressing side, making investment in the midfield a safer route for now. With form on his side, Lamela is staking a real claim for consideration over Eriksen and with West Ham, QPR, Sunderland and West Brom in the first five, has the potential to be a deadly differential over the first few Gameweeks.

    • After last year’s disappointment, it’s easy to forget Lamela’s capabilities. Further assessment of his 2013/13 season in Serie A shows he fired 86 shots – an average of 2.6 attempts per game was bettered by only two midfielders in the Premier League last season, Yohan Cabaye and Philippe Coutinho. Despite being fielded out wide by the Italian outfit, Lamela also chipped in creatively – a total of 56 chances created equates to 1.7 per appearance; on a par with Cabaye and team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor in the previous campaign.

    The Deal with Wisdom

There's a threat that he & Gamboa may fight for time, but that's not today my friends.

So there's several things working in favour of having Wisdom on our teams:

    1. Wisdom has started & played the full 90 in back-to-back matches

    2. McAuley & Lescott are dealing with injuries... Wisdom is versatile & can fill in at CB which means game time.

    3. Gamboa has yet to train since the World Cup & WBA only have 2 more scheduled preseason matches.

    4. The WBA forums have Gamboa playing on the right side of midfield:
    http://westbrom.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=abecb2421c1f70fe6d4900145e9428d0&topic=14003.50

    5. Why would he have been loaned out in the first place, if WBA had designs on signing another player anyway?

On the whole, I feel all of this points to Wisdom being a safe bet for us to have come GW1 & beyond.

Great post. I agree with all of this, Wisdom looks the best bet for a 4.0 and I think your 5th point is the most crucial. With other 4.0 options sitting on promoted sides I am going to stick with Wisdom.

          @Nomar

Q: Do we *ever* have any intention of playing our 5th defender when he costs 4mil?

          A: Nope, probably not.

So WBA's defensive abilities are moot in this discussion.

          Also, you're a member:
Go look at WBA's defensive performance last year. (Shots in the box, Errors etc.)
Certainly not as awful as the narrative here would have us believe, right?

Then go and check their actual injury list and the players missing the rest of pre-season. Wisdom should have better than fair chances to start, no doubt, but what is it worth if its because all of their good defenders are injured?

If I'd only mentioned this one aspect fine but, there's several reasons listed.

Umm, clearly he's a nailed on captain's choice & we will therefore reap the benefits of Wisdom's 0-2 pointers too!

Also, no need to be Biggus Dickus about it mate!

The value of a nailed on 4mil defender should not be over looked!

Having an extra .5mil working for you in attack, rather than gathering dust every week is quite valuable especially when money's tight!

        Post Script!

Is it not blindingly obvious that West Brom are also going to try a 352 this season?! They have bought two wingbacks (Pocognoli and Gamboa) and a few centrebacks. Wisdom is perfect as the RCB in that system.

i am lamela's biggest fan - as many of you know. 9.5 seems steep. I expected him to come in at 7.5 but at 8.0 he is still a worthy purchase. Eriksen will be more consistent than lamela, delivering set piece points as well as many assists. However i believe lamela is more explosive - think of the cazorla/ozil and walcott situation at arsenal. Its like that. You want lamela in there for his brace/hatrick potential

Continuing on from the Scouts on report on the United Liverpool game, here are some things that I thought were worth of note:

    - Both Henderson and Coutinho took corners throughout the match. Whilst Gerrard's delivery was better then both, Rodgers is obviously trying out other option in light of the heavy schedule, presumably when Gerrard does not play.

    - Herrera and Fletcher make a good combination in the centre, but there are little attacking runs into the box. Probably the reason why all the rumours of Van Gaal wanting a box to box midfielder.

    - Young again looked like he could offer competition at the wing-back birth, despite Shaw's second half showing.

    - Liverpool inability to stop the opponents creating chances is still very worrying. Despite trying out several midfielders, the defence still has little cover in front of it.

    - Sakho is still a liability on the ball, but perhaps with a more accomplished partner on the ball (Lovren) he may do better. Very aggressive for the cause.

    - Sterling once again looked great. Runs at players, not afraid to try and create, flair, the full works. He could be the new 'S' in the SAS, complementing the fast attacking option Sturridge offers.

    - Mata was the main player centrally. If the ball is coming through the middle, Mata will be involved. Expect goals and key passes from the edge of the box, rather then scything through balls. Kagawa did not have much time to impress, despite his dubious assist.

    - Rooney looks a new animal. Drops back, but only to create to the wings, before rushing up to be in the box for crosses. Expect big hauls from him, especially without RVP.

    - The second spot next to him is up in the air, many could play there. It's either Rooney or nothing at this stage, until RVP returns.

I'd avoid that second spot entirely, we all know who it will go too. Welbeck's work rate may get him in there, but its not exactly a sure thing, especially now that Van Gall is asking his wide players to adapt their game centrally.

Shaw didn't come on in the 2nd half. He came on in the 8th minute because Valencia got injured so Young moved to the right. Both impressed and they should start the opening game imo ahead of Valencia (regardless if his injury is only minor).

Would disagree with the point you make about Sakho being a liability. Defensively he was very solid and while there is a myth that he isn't as good as the likes of Agger on the ball, he actually had a very impressive pass completion rate of 92.5% in the league last season.

Pass completion rate is one thing (look at Joe Allen) but his ball control is atrocious, both initially and having enough control to pass it on.

I clench every time I see the ball being played out through him.

Lamela, Ashley Young at this rate.

Vlaar could be an option too. We've all known he was the best part of a shoddy Villa defence, so if he moves he could be a cheap and decent option.

Hi people, to help you choose your defence, I've worked out the chance of a clean sheet for every game in the first 3 GWs based on bookies odds. (Purely for convenience, I used SkyBet for GW1 and then BetBright is the only firm giving odds on GWs 2 & 3).

Theres a lot of information here - it may be of use to some people, if it isn't then by all means ignore, but lets be honest, the bookies are a bit better at predicting this kind of thing than we are 🙂

    • The number written next to each team is the % chance that they will keep a clean sheet
    • Odds are normally biased towards the house by around 8% of the % chance stated, which has NOT been taken into account, so the true values are higher than the ones here e.g. if it says 50% here, the real chance is closer to 54%

    Man Utd 52.4 v Swansea 14.3
    Leicester 23.5 v Everton 32.3
    QPR 34.8 v Hull 32.3
    Stoke 40 v Aston Villa 28.6
    West Brom 38.1 v Sunderland 26.7
    West Ham 25 v Spurs 34.8
    Arsenal 55.5 v Crystal Palace 12.5
    Liverpool 47.6 v Southampton 13.3
    Newcastle 16.7 v Man City 42.1
    Burnley 14.3 v Chelsea 50

    Aston Villa 35.7 v Newcastle 27.8
    Chelsea 58.3 v Leicester 11.4
    Crystal Palace 40 v West Ham 31.3
    Southampton 41.7 v West Brom 20
    Swansea 43.5 v Burnley 23.1
    Spurs 50 v QPR 17.4
    Everton 30.3 v Arsenal 30.3
    Hull 41.7 v Stoke 32.3
    Sunderland 20.4 v Man Utd 38.7
    Man City 29.4 v Liverpool 17.5

    Burnley 18.5 v Man Utd 44.7
    Aston Villa 40.6 v Hull 28.2
    Man City 57.1 v Stoke 11.8
    Newcastle 43.5 v Crystal Palace 27.8
    QPR 35.7 v Sunderland 33.3
    Swansea 45.5 v West Brom 26.3
    West Ham 34.5 v Southampton 30.8
    Everton 28.2 v Chelsea 35.2
    Spurs 26.7 v Liverpool 27.4
    Leicester 20.4 v Arsenal 39.1

    AVERAGE CLEAN SHEETS PER GAME:

    Chelsea 0.478
    Man Utd 0.453
    Man City 0.429
    Arsenal 0.416
    Spurs 0.372
    Aston Villa 0.350
    Swansea 0.344
    Hull 0.341
    Liverpool 0.308

    Stoke 0.280
    Crystal Palace 0.268
    Sunderland 0.268
    Burnley 0.186

It's just that I have no respect for players who move for wage and not because they love football such as Rodwell or Sinclair. Football should not be dictated by money but by passion, history and loyalty. They both new they were moving to sit on the bench this clearly shows there lack of passion for the sport which means they don't deserve the wage or the opportunity to place.

He would've gone there believing he had a chance. Man City saw enough in him to want to sign him, so of course he would've had confidence in himself making it there. Not saying money didn't play some part, but it's not the only pull to a club like City. Are you a United fan?

To those wondering about their RMT scores, I think that it is often used best for your defensive rotation and to plan your captaincy options now that Suarez is no longer in the league.

The six week totals will drive you mad at times and sometimes put you off sound decisions, especially at the start. If one week is grossly lower than the others that is also something to be watched, but overall a variation of five points per week or so is not a big deal. If you have Southampton players your scores will be inflated, as someone explained yesterday on here.

And the machine is also a bit more conservative than you would hope for, but machines do not have a hope button.

I think its because he clearly wants to leave. QPR are happy for him to leave so it creates uncertainty. He is a great option, but will he play, or will he stay benched until his agent can find him a new home at the end of August.

I didn't. They basically said pick 3 teams you'd like to see and we will send you a list of fixtures available on a first come first serve basis. I said Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City. And the only fixtures they sent me were Man Utd vs Chelsea, Man Utd vs Everton and Chelsea vs West Ham. The Chelsea vs West Ham game is on Boxing day so no idea why they thought I would pick that. And I'd rather see them vs Chelsea than Everton, bigger match.

Hi all, I'm on staff as a writer for a sport site in the States. They asked me to look into the impact of Suarez leaving Liverpool. Researching this article has me off all Liverpool players completely, ESPECIALLY Sterling. Thought you all might enjoy. Thanks

I don't think so completely, Liverpool still have the same core of players, will strengthen their back line and have added an immense talent in Lallana, it isn't to say Suarez won't be missed, he will, but I don't think it's as serious as people are making out, you can hark stats about as much as you like but the focal point now will be the teams effort, not Suarez, other players will now step up. Suarez on an off day could waste chances like they were nothing, arguably wasn't great against the big teams either. Where Liverpool will improve is the pace they'll play at, pinning teams back, pushing up allowing Lallana and/or Coutinho plenty of space to work their magic.

We'll see. Definitely possible, but I fear without that true focal point they could struggle. Agree the back line will be stronger. Also not convinced Lallana is an "immense" talent, think Rodgers paid an English premium for him. All that said, I could be eating these words come midseason! But I'm off Liverpool players for now...

Lallana has been improving season after season, had a great one last season and the season before. To be fair if Lallana wasn't English, people would be saying his price was justified. The focal point will now be the creative players, Sterling, Sturridge, and Markovic are all capable players with the ball at their feet, but they're more direct, Suarez' game was always to slow down play, make passes and break defenses down with the killer ball, Liverpool don't now lack that killer ball, it's just that it will be different players delivering it.

i agree...obviously life without saurez will be hard and he will be missed (one of the best players to ever grace the league) but it wasn't as if no one else was performing last season. sturridge finished second goalscoerer. stevie g had an immense season. sterling was just getting his legs.

BR has been building a squad, not just a one player team....I expect us to push just as much as last season and finish in a similar position. the title could be harder to get this year because we have europe as well but i expect a top 4 finish and to get out of the CL group stage. BR is building a team that will be on top for years to come, not just one good season. I trust him and think he is changing the core how LFC play for the better and for the future

Fair comments. Definitely possible that Liverpool becomes a counterattacking force, but I don't think we can suggest that now that Suarez is gone, 43 goals/assists can simply be replaced by a collective effort.

It will definitely be interesting. I just think they might have a little of what Spurs had last year with "we can't pass it to Bale, now what?"

That said, Rodgers is a better attacking manager than AVB, so we'll see.

I don't think it was ever a case of just pass it to Saurez. Sturridge is very hungry/greedy.

I read an article earlier this week that talked about teams with one high scoring player never won the league. Van Nis was their main example. that when he was at United they didnt win trophies as much even though he banged in 30+ but when they didnt have that killer striker they won leagues...

so i guess its the team vs player...one amazing player will hog hog the headlines and get top scorer etc but a team wins the league. and I think LFC are building that team. I dont think we are ready just yet but we have good young players and a large amount of English players, unlike Chelsea and City.

We have signed a fair amount of PL players vs new players unlike Spurs who were all untested

Spurs went out and bought an entirely new team, they didn't have a backbone, instead AVB went about buying one, with no emphasis on how he wants his forwards to link up. 31 goals and 12 assists isn't unreasonable to recoup, Sterling will improve, Hendo will improve Coutinho will improve and Sturridge will improve, while I agree as of right now Suarez will be missed and we won't score as much we can replace Suarez, not with a like for like player, but it isn't unimaginable to replace his stats.

                  exactly

plus we scored the most goals last season and didn't win the league. so we don't need to match goals scored. we need to defend better. more players will step up now and have a chance to shine. also think how much they learned from Saurez. Not only did he score a lot he tracked back and defended and look at Sterling, he never gives up much like Saurez. Thats the way we started playing, pressuring and always chasing the ball

It was easy to forget that Suarez scored most of them goals from play unless Gerard was off the pitch.

Sturridge is more greedy then Suarez. He might not assist as much be should keep clocking up the goals.

Assists will be dependent on sterling/lalana/gerard/Markovic etc

Hendo is actually most appealing to me, as I think he could get semi-consistent returns for the exact reason your suggest. I just think no matter how talented Sterling is, we have to consider that 11 of his 14 goals/assists were directly helped by Suarez. We're asking him to make a pretty huge leap to justify that price

Yeah, they were directly helped by the front man. There's no denying that Suarez was very good for his development but you can see how confident he is through his work over the summer. I think doing research specifically targeted at how a world-class player leaving a team has biased you mate, you could do the same to any team who has sold a top player over the summer.

Re: your last point, I hear what you're saying, but Suarez is no ordinary world-class player. Third-best in the world for me, and one who plays a very distinctive way. Like even Arsenal w/o van Persie wasn't set to crash and burn, but I'm not sure we can say the same thing here

If Messi left Barcelona I'd see them as struggling to compete for La Liga absolutely and I'd see his absence hurting the players around him. I don't think they'd suddenly get better to fix it, a player like Messi creates a ridiculous amount of opportunities for others just from his movements and passes, not to mention converting a lot of chances that others wouldn't convert.

true....but sometimes depending on one player is a bad thing (not that barca only have one good player) and when is is off form he can ruin a game because he will demand the ball.....

i don't think there is a Saurez replacement out there...but I think we have a good chance to win the league with a good squad, as we did last year with a weaker squad but with Saurez. When he played bad he did waste chances and because of a weaker squad we had less options on the bench to change a match.

Now BR has got a bigger and better overall squad, we can be more lethal with changes than last year when the plan is not working or when the opposition changes their plans...

But a player like Suarez or Messi, as I say, draws people to him, defenders worry about him even off form. I saw it frequently last season, defenders would momentarily lapse and lose Sturridge or another Pool lad making a run when Suarez was making a move and simple as that it was a goal.

I expect Pool to do fine, challenge for top 4 but to win the league is just reaching, not even most of the Pool fans expect that on here so I think you need to readjust your expectations there.

Plus, the squad has not underwent some amazing overhaul currently. Lallana is a good one, he'll do well, Markovic has ability but is neither a goal scorer or an assister, Lambert is a bench player, Can is a decent CM but will see a lot of rotation, Lovren will be an improvement over Skrtel but Agger is better than both of them yet they're going to let him go/leave him on the bench. The squad has improved undoubtedly but not phenomenally by any stretch of the imagination. Now factor in CL matches and injuries.

At the end of the day, I think it's naive to believe that players losing someone like Suarez, someone who in training no doubt exudes quality and is a great asset for younger lads to learn from, won't hurt them. I do believe the squad needed to increase certainly but, even if a few step up (which I expect them to do) you're losing a huge number of goals. Not only that, you're losing an entity, a talisman. And that can hurt a team. Do I think Pool will be in trouble? No, they should do well this season I would hope. Do I think they'll challenge for the title? Not a chance.

Seamus Coleman to miss the rest of pre-season with his hamstring injury. Must surely cast doubts over him starting GW 1.

Went to check his FPL ownership, thought it would be higher than 13.4% after last year. Baines on 13.3%. Seems majority can't split them now they're the same price. Has to be Baines all the way though imo

Filled in for the 2 games Coleman missed last season ahead of Hibbert who was on the bench both times, RM also likes to give youth game time whenever he can.

Yes, it now means the casuals will ditch Coleman and select Baines because id imagine the former will be flagged.

Last season went into the season with

    Cortinho"......disaster
    Miralas".........disaster
    Soldado well not quite disaster

And a few other lame ducks

But after two weeks was in the top 2k despite having half my team not contributing.
You cant expect them all to perform , despite spending weeks agonising over every spot.
Its more important to have those one or two players that really explode.
Think last two seasons it been ivanovich for me

Problem is none of us can really predict who they are going to be.

What im trying to say is dont be afraid to try differentials because most of the
Popular picks are likely to fail early on

I don't think that's what he's saying. He's saying nobody is really sure who will do well, so popularity doesn't indicate that they are must haves, or that they'll do any better than similar unpopular players.

for the month part they are popular picks because they're the least likely to fail haha

but I also think just picking who you think will score well is good too.

There was a very good article about how forwards score more per game than any other position, however, their injury time makes it look like a defender is better value points/cost. I get all of that.

My contention, and I think the author hit on it a bit, is that forwards have more injury time than any other position, so their "value" is diminished. When your forward is injured, you simply replace him, so the value part gets skewed because you now have the striker position playing, so it appears to me that the defender value versus striker value is mitigated due to transfers.

Any validity to this or am I just deluding myself!

Having a bit & back & forth on this myself.

What I decided is, part of the great defenders (Umm, Baines for example?) *added* value is they will grid out those points over an entire season allowing us to utilise our transfers where they matter most.

If strikers are often inured or struggling for form, it makes sense to me, that I *only* want to focus on my front 7 & not have to *waste* transfers on low level point getters.

As a result, I may not have *every* heavy hitter that most teams do however, we can only captain one player a week & there's always value to be had in the mid-tier midfielders / strikers so that's where I'll focus my attentions in order to best move up the ranks.

I see that Bojan and Pelle head the "Waste of Money" category in today's Big Kick Off pull-out in the Racing Post.

Rooney's the nap for top goal scorer (Soldado @ 50/1 is the e/w tip!) while Stoke are touted to be best of the rest out with the Big Seven.
