Last minute changes, the search for under the radar differentials and formation strategies were among the key issues being discussed in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as the first Gameweek deadline approaches.

In this, our regular round-up, we revisit all the eleventh hour deliberations amongst the community articles and comment Hot Topics. We also bring news of the winner of July’s Community Article of the Month competition, showcase the launch of a new dedicated Rate My Team section and catch up on some of the community competitions taking place over the 2014/15 season.

The Community Articles

Our July Community Article of the Month competition proved to be a landslide, with Billy Gilmore’s impressive bonus point analysis gaining every single vote. Billy wins £20 Amazon voucher as a result. Well deserved recognition for an outstanding contribution.

There are already some early contenders for August’s prize, with Applebonkers’ look back at some of the Fantasy Football’s great ”disaster defying defenders”, one notable candidate. A superb article for the seasoned Fantasy campaigner, Applebonkers singles out those occasions where a defender has, against the odds, pulled off a points haul to snatch victory from the yawning jaws of defeat. Lovely stuff.

Forza Inter was also back this week with part two of his guide to his unique rotation strategy, based around using cheap players to supplement heavy-hitting defenders. Krosan was another to focus on rotation, bringing news of the launch of his free app to help Fantasy managers find the best combination of cheap defenders and goalkeepers.

Other technical wizards penning community articles this week included Sjrhutchinson, who with the aid of his calculator, has concluded that the best Fantasy Premier League formation this season may well be 4-5-1. Elsewhere, The Puntmaster’s excellent series of articles looking at new players to the Premier League continued with a focus on his player comparison tool.

Defence was the focus of posts from Daniel Levy16 and Diego Costa Lot, who looked at the budget options available for just four million in the FPL and Arsenal’s backline, respectively.

This week also saw the launch of a dedicated home for Rate My Team posts, which are increasing at a steady pace as the deadline for the first Gameweek of the season approaches. The first of these, in which I laid my team out to start the discussion, can be found here.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some pre-season analysis or features to help Fantasy managers finalise their squads, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

With just days to go before the launch of the new Premier League season, the community is embroiled in deliberations over tweaks and tinkering, quizzing the merits of formations and deciding how and where to allocate funds.

Our discussion on last minute changes found that a number of players are hokey-cokeying their way in and out of our squads at an alarming rate.

After a torrid season at Tottenham, Gylfi Sigurdsson could be one of those players. Handed a chance for redemption back at Swansea this season, he’s already earning template status among the community. But Irish Madrista wonders whether his growing popularity could prove costly should he fail to deliver.

Chelsea defenders are also amongst the emerging team template, but with rotation sure to bite, Chris White’s excellent round-up of the London side’s back line assets proved useful reading. Chelsea’s defence is proving so popular that some Fantasy managers are even considering doubling up. Demi’s Hot Topic on defensive strategy revealed that Gargamel, among others, is toying with such a tactic.

Investing in Chelsea comes at a hefty price and will require budget players elsewhere to free up cash. With that in mind, The Fantasy Freak handed us a heads-up that Swansea could present a new option in FPL’s 4.0 bracket in the form of Kyle Bartley – a potential regular starter following Chico’s departure from the Liberty and a short-term solution to help find funds. Donald Duck Snr was another to look at budget players, in this handy round up here.

Cheap strikers, such as Stoke’s Bojan Krkic, have also caught the eye for those looking to maximise heavy-hitters in their side, as our discussion on the pros and cons of a 3-5-2 formation demonstrated. Stoke players have also come to the attention of Asquishy Potato, who took a look at their likely starting XI this season.

Saving money through rotating cheap goalkeepers continues to be one of the most popular strategies. Sinik’s discussion about the best 4.5m rotating goalkeeping pairs will prove vital reading for those opting for this approach.

Finally, next week will see the first podcast of the season and the community was on hand to help our hosts Mark and Granville with their Scoutcast Team feature. Among those with ideas for how to construct their team was 50 Shades of O’Shea who wants a one player per team limit in place. Another idea was 16Shimic16’s notion of only selecting ex-La Liga players.

The Community Tournaments

We’ve another couple of community tournaments to announce this week – tailored for those who have allegiances outside of the Premier League.

This weekend saw the launch of the Football League. For those who have a team selected in the Football League Manager Fantasy game The Puntmaster informs us he has set up a league. The password to join his Fantasy Football Scout league is ffs.

For those that support a non-Premier League side, whether it be AC Milan or Macclesfield, Billy Ketsu is once again running his Another World league in the FPL game. The code to join in 31650-266089.

they seem to vary between 3 and 4 defenders...when they play 3 bruce plays at center back and most likely rosenior gets dropped...when they play 4 most likely rosenior will play at right back instead of bruce

having said that rosenior seemed to play regularly last season when they were switching systems...but in their last europa league game he seemed to be dropped

Behind the striker, there is a lot of competition, I agree, but if he can snag some game time he'll get points. If he flops it's an easy transfer to Hendo or Siggy also.

Because Monk said he was trying out two up top pre season in case they need to switch it up during games/late in the game etc...

He said he will revert back to 4-2-3-1 when the season starts, and Siggy will be in the hole...

I didn't get your synopsis out of that interview at all. Seemed to me an outdated, defensive minded coach rationalizing playing Siggy out wide and talking nonsense about him being an "all around midfielder" ie defending. Worrisome to say the least.

"Refuse to believe Cameron will be out in the cold"

according to somebody who says he works for Stoke and posts on here Cameron is still "highly regarded"...but he's not played more than 45 minutes in pre-season (possibly because he's being eased in/rested after the world cup)...but none of that is the point

the pertinent point is that there's every chance he'll get fewer minutes because Bardsley will get some pitch time...what's more I bet you Bard plays the easy games and Cam plays the tough ones

our only chance is that Bard has been signed so Cam can replace Huth...but that's very speculative

Cam might also play right mid some games but again that'll be the tough ones

it's not a gamble I want to take

can you tell me what the Stoke back 4 will be?

Chambers is going to be a very short-lived punt I think, and I wouldn't want to force myself into exchanging cheapie DFers early on. Bruce is not going to play I reckon as well.

It's way too dead to use the RMT article at this time. Can hear the crickets in there:

Any comments on this team chaps and chapettes?

    Bego - 4.0
Luis - Evans - Colo - Wisdom - Bartley (will change if Swans sign a CB)
    Mata - Rambo - Sterling - Siggy - Marney
    Roon - Costa - Dzeko

    0.5mil ITB

Firstly, I'm confident on Luis playing the vast majority of games, he didn't sign a 28yr old bench warmer for 20-odd mil. Wisdom only has a limited amount of gametime I guess but is worth the punt for now (need him GW1!). Bartley I will monitor the sitaution.

So how's the team? Dzeko or Jovetic? Should I keep the 0.5 in the bank or spend on improving DF?

      Looks pretty nice.

I'd spend the .5 on upgrading Bartley to a 4.5 that could rotate with Colo. Gives you more options and more security I think.

Looks pretty standard going forward, but that's a good thing I think. I'd stick with dzeko over jovetic for the moment, as I think that jov has a much higher chance of being dropped upon aguero's return, as they occupy a similar role.

Yeh my feeling too on the Dzeko v Jov situation. Also easier to downgrade to Jov, than the other way around.

I'm sticking with Bartley for now, but will keep an eye on Swans transfer activity.

        Thx 🙂

so i was looking for a rmt to copy/paste then edit and yours is too similar. Main change for me is Luis for Terry and i have jovetic.

Jovetic was city's best yesterday, he is in better form for me.

If you're happy with luis then save the .5, sure someone is going to have an amazing first game and a little extra cash makes it all a lot easier.

    Stuck on this one atm:

    A) Fabregas, Fletcher, Krul
    B) Eriksen, Austin, Begovic

Most on here would advocate bego over Krul religiously, but I'm not sure it is so clear cut. Stoke are simply not the defensive powerhouses they were a few seasons back under pulis. Despite newcastle's horrible 2nd half of the season last year, Krul still managed more CS than begovic over the season. Both have similarly kind early fixtures.

Fletcher vs. Austin is really just a case of one punt versus another. With his injury-ravaged season last year obviously hurting his appeal, I feel as though fletcher may be an overlooked option at that price. Austin has been looking good in pre-season, and was fairly prolific last season. Yet he remains unproven in the PL, and if remy stays, I can see him starting on the bench for some difficult away games, where Redknapp opts for just the 1 striker.

So am I right in thinking A? Would like to hear your thoughts.

      I'd go for B)........just.

I hear what you are saying about Bego, but his fixtures can't be ignored. By GW12, I'll be looking to move him on. And if you fancy Newcastle, then Colo is a decent route into their DF, whereas Stoke don't have an option at that price. Fletch is a risk too from A), you've got Wickham vying for a spot and Sun look likely to sign another striker.

Thanks for your feedback. Yea, it's certainly a tight decision, though you raise good points. The 3rd part which I suppose I didn't address was the relative appeal of fab v eriksen for the opening fixture, and in that regard I find it difficult to overlook A. What's your stance on that dilemma?

In any case, cheers for your thoughts.

Your reasoning is sound,go with A. Have you thought about eriksen, krul and a 6.0 attacker like Jelavic/crouch? There's a few out there...

        Cheers for your response.

Austin is actually a 6mil ST already, so either of your suggestions could be incorporated without bego-> Krul. I'm not convinced by jelavic (nor am I sure that he'll start), whilst the same applies to crouch, as I see Djiouf starting ahead of him.

        H/ever, I appreciate your input - cheers.

Oh dear. Smalling is the best defender in the squad by some distance. Evans is the best distributor of the ball. The only thing Phil Jones does consistently is hurt himself in amazingly creative and humurous ways.

I personally think that the bojan-wagon will crash spectacularly, though I have no statistical backing for that claim. I'd also steer clear of attacking rotation in most circumstances, as there are bound to be tears with unexpected hauls sitting on the bench.
