This evening’s Members article takes a look over the action in Sunday’s Community Shield showdown between Arsenal and City. Having assessed Alexis Sanchez’ display our lunchtime Technical Area post, we delve into the data to discover for any hints of form ahead of the weekend Gameweek 1 deadline.
- Is Rooney, Costa and Sturridge Too Much?
So has anyone else given in to go the Sturridge Costa Rooney team wagon - Join the club.
Open ControlsWas thinking about it, but didn't want to spoil my lovely midfield 🙂
Open ControlsSomething has to give, you can't have them all
Open ControlsCan have more of them without that expensive frontline though i reckon 🙂
Open ControlsYup, which two have you opted for?
Open Controls
Some were on it before you thought of the idea. Stop claiming it as your own.
Open ControlsNot claiming it as my 'idea'
Open ControlsEvery time you post it's about these front 3....
Open ControlsNever said it is my idea- just generally advising people that this is the best way to go
Open ControlsAnd how do you know that? The season hasn't even started...
Open ControlsI don't 'know' it, I just think it is the best way to go
Open Controls
To be fair you can't advise that something is better when realistically you have no idea what is going to happen
Open ControlsThat is the point, no one knows what is going to happen, but when you advise people on RMT's etc you do that according to what you 'think' is right
Open ControlsDon't want to get in to it, but when you say 'advising people that this is the best way to go', it is you telling them without a shadow of a doubt that this will work out best for them. Not what you think could be the most beneficial.
Open Controls
It isn't. The idea is the try and get the most points from 100m not just the most points. You don't get value from them by owning them all at once because the value from these players comes from captaining them regularly.
Open ControlsEveryone has his own ideas man, I just think that the forwards are the players who are most likely to get you the most points. So when there is uncertainty regarding the Dzekos,Jovetics and Girouds of this world, I would just pick the best forwards. Despite that, you can afford a decent team
Open Controls
Well touchy folks on here at this time. What's wrong?! 🙂
Open Controls😛
Open Controls
Well, dropped Costa for Sturridge yesterday.
And then he scored 2 and is getting hard to ignore form-wise. So back to the drawing board. haha.Open ControlsHahaha 🙂
Open Controls
Im in with all three. I don't want to be sat here at midday [sat] worried the one I left out scores a hatty. If one gets injured GW1 then I can bring in who I want [ except RVP]
Open ControlsBrilliant, sit back and enjoy the gold 🙂
Open Controls
2/3 is most I would go because I don't like the balance if I get all 3. Not only that I don't want Sturridge just now because of fixtures and there is a questionmark over whether or not they can replicate last seasons form.
Open ControlsLiverpool will score goals, their attacking returns are fixture proof.. No doubt about that.. Rodgers loves to attack
I don't see how this team is unbalanced
Krul
Jones/Terry/Chester
Mata/Ramsey/Snodgrass/Sigurdsson
Rooney/Costa/Sturridge
Elliot/Marney/Hutton/Moore
Ticks all the boxes
-Nailed on United defender
-Nailed on Chelsea defender
-Best forward line in the game to begin with at least
-Mata
-Ramsey
-I've explained the midfield below (I know the fourth midfielder is a problem, but more options will appear when the season starts. For now, I'm playing the fixtures and beginning with Snodgrass)Open ControlsYour bench is fodder and you have Chester as a starter, not to mention you are missing at least 1 premium midfielder, well that is how I see it but you obviously view it differently.
Are Sturridge + Snodgrass + Chester going to outscore Giroud + Eriksen + Jones for example.Open ControlsBench is meant to be fodder, it's just that you need nailed on players who can fill in during your time of need
As I said I expect that third forward (Studge) to outscore that 3rd premium midfielder (Fabregas Sterling Eriksen etc) comfortably
You missed the fact that I have Jones in there as well.
I've picked Chester and Snodgrass to give me a solid foundation to begin with as Hull play Stoke,Villa,QPR and West Ham in the first 4. Till the next Ramsey or Michu reveals himself, I'm going to play the fixturesOpen ControlsThanks 🙂
Open Controls
im considering Hazard + Erikson over Mata + Ramsey with that front line.
Thoughts?Open ControlsBoth are good options, but Hazard looks rusty at the moment. Mata and Ramsey should come out firing out of the blocks 🙂
Open Controls
Just don't think that 3rd premium mid (Sterling,Eriksen,Fabregas etc) is worth it over my 3rd striker (Sturridge) - More points in attack (plus more captaincy options)
The midfield picks itself too
Mata and Ramsey pick themselves - top picks
Siggy - Bargain at that price with set pieces
The fourth one is the tricky one (You can choose anyone below 6.5) - Hendo and Snodgrass are the obvious picks but I've personally gone with Snod due to his fixtures. I'm sure we'll have another option after the few gameweeks who i can jump on and replace Snod (Michu,Ramsey in the previous years)Open ControlsIts not only about Sturridge vs 1 premium mid, its Sturridge + 6m mid vs premium mid + 8.5 att... Are you sure Sturridge + Snodgrass will outscore Sterling/Fabregas/Eriksen + Dzeko/Bony/Adebayor/Giroud...
Open ControlsYes,100%... Bear in mind Sturridge gives you another captaincy option as well
Are you sure about these strikers yourself? I'm not convinced
-We don't know who the main man at City is (Question mark around Aguero as well, going the 3 striker route would allow an easier upgrade to Aguero)
-Bony might leave before the end of the window leading to you reshuffle your team early on
-Adebayor may be rotated with Soldado due to Europa
-Giroud isn't 100% fit
Snodgrass is just a short term punt due to fixtures (Stoke,WHAM,Villa,QPR), I'll replace him as soon as the next Michu/Ramsey reveals himself 😉Open Controls
I currently have all three...and Yaya 😀
Choice has come down to Dzeko & Sterling over Sturridge & a mid up to 6.5. I prefer the latter.Open ControlsI'm rocking the Sturoosta front line. High 5!
Open Controlso/
Open Controls
I reckon it can be done. You can still keep a Chelsea defender, two £9m mids and then two bargains and a cheapie.
For me it rather depends on Young - without him the 4th midfielder looks a very weak spot.Open ControlsYup - see the team I posted above
As I said, I'm sure we'll have another option after the few gameweeks who i can jump on and replace Snod (Michu,Ramsey in the previous years)... Even if you don't go the Young routeOpen ControlsYup I've gone Fabregas over Mata but otherwise very similar - I like the look of Snod and Hull's early fixtures are great but they don't score much and there's also the inevitable dip with Europa. The upgrade obviously requires 2 transfers but you can probably take your pick of which 3 forwards to downgrade by that point.
Open ControlsExactly, Henderson and Puncheon are the other alternatives to Snod
Open ControlsI think I'm going Young and Siggi subject to the press conference. Young seems worth the gamble as he could be absolutely explosive.
What do you think on Henderson? Polarises opinion but I'm quite tempted, he's got the potential to score more this year but maybe a watch and see.Open ControlsHenderson is definitely a good shout with this strategy. Tbh in week two onwards Steven Davis could become playable every week at 5.0, so there's no shortage of options.
Open ControlsExactly, you can throw Mutch in there as well
Open Controls
I think it is best to wait and see with Henderson. Sure if he gets off to a flyer like Ramsey, well and good and you can jump on the wagon straight away
If he doesn't, he is a big candidate for a price rise as Liverpool play City and Spurs after the Soton game. His role still requires some clarification. Hence, I've opted for the safer Snodgrass routeOpen Controls
Think Costa to Hazard is better tbh :/ I see Rooney and Studge as essential this season(both will score over 20 im sure).
Costa is going to score, but maybe like 15-17 ?
Might as well roll the dice 😛Open ControlsNot sure who will score more through out the course of the season, but Costa is definitely the man in form right now, while Hazard after the World Cup (and even during it) looks rusty and disinterested
Open Controls
I personally believe you'll get a better return on your money by picking three 9.0 midfielders - and there's a conundrum in itself, trying to pick the best three.
However, I have picked Costa due to what appears to be a sole striker status. Means he'll get goals and of course, gametime. The other two have competing strikers.
I also believe Costa is undervalued by FPL because of this lone striker status and could be the bargain of the season, even at 10.5Open ControlsIts not about the money at the end of the day, it is about the points 🙂
Exactly, he's underpriced and in that team with Fabregas and Hazard being the providers, he'll fill his boots week in week outOpen Controls
RMT / 10 please, 0m ITB
Krul (Elliot)
Jones Cahill Wisdom (Moore Duff)
Young Hazard Ramsey Sigurdsson (Marney)
Rooney Costa SturridgeOpen ControlsGreat team 🙂

Ultimate Fantasy Premier League Keeper Options
Ideally you want one keeper who plays Saturday, one who plays Sunday, and if there is a Monday game, one for that night too, however planning for Monday games is near impossible, and giving yourself a good selection over the weekend seems the best way to maximize the chance of getting the clean sheet.
A look at some 3 keeper options
Man Utd, Newcastle, Sunderland (DDG, Krul, Mannone) (14.5)
Gives you 2 options a weekend, except weeks 3, 12 and 13, but gives an easy home fixture in all 3 cases. The second option in a gameweek is usually David De Gea, useful for UFPL as you want your punts to play and have strong backups to come in on Sunday (More on this on the Mid and Fwd articles)
DDG – Fantastic shot stopper who is the cheapest nailed on option in the United defense, strong opening fixtures should mean he cleans up the clean sheets points.
Krul – Solid option at a decent Newcastle team, any fears over clean sheet potential should be alleviated by his save points, you wont need to play him much anyway
Mannone – A hero from the season gone by, no BPS in the UFPL game means he wont be in for many 11 point hauls but should garner plenty of save points in a surprisingly resilient Sunderland side.
Man Utd, Spurs, Newcastle (DDG, LLoris, Krul) (15.5)
Gives you at least 2 options EVERY weekend up until week 15. Sightly more expensive but the option i would recommend.
LLoris – one of the league best keepers, in what many are expecting to be a strong spurs defense under Poch
Man Utd, Spurs, Mignolet (DDG, LLoris, Mignolet) (16.5)
Gives you 2 options a week except weeks 11 and 5. Even more expensive but Gives you 3 keepers from top 6 Team teams, all of which are nailed on every single match.
Mignolet – Pool should be more solid this year with Lovren and other defensive additions, although not sure Mignolet is worth the 5.5 tag.
I reckon option 2 is the best choice for the coming season, you can see a bit more detail here http://ultimatefpl.wordpress.com/2014/08/12/ultimate-fpl-goalkeepers/
Any thoughts or opinions?Open ControlsHow did Aaron Cresswell end up costing 5.5m? Way to kill off a prospect!
Open ControlsInjured, also.
Open ControlsI think FPL has become VERY good at pricing players.
Open ControlsYeah that sucked
Open ControlsPrice list out?
Open ControlsSomeone with stubby fingers entered the West Ham prices.
Open Controlstrippier level of attacking threat combined with a non laughable defence

Open ControlsHi there, first ever post and just bought membership! Would love it if you could critique my team. I've gone for 5 solid players I know will score me a good amount of points. The rest of the team are solid players (I have decided against ANY 4.5 or lower other than my backup keeper) who I believe will all score solid points. Potential problems: players scoring decent points on the bench (my biggest pet hate). Anyway here is my team:
Courtois
Isla Debuchy Caulker Lovren Shaw
Ramsey Mata Fabregas
Giourd Rooney
(Mannone)(Bojan avl h, Sigurdsson mun a, Ward-Prowse liv a)
I plan on swapping Ward-Prowse for Gnabry once he is loaned from Arsenal
ANY contribution is welcome!
Thanks!Open ControlsI shall help as you asked so nicely. First of Courtois is a decent pick if he'll play but can see a lot of rotation with him and Cech go With someone cheaper in my opinion. Isla and Caulker is too much QPR preferably would keep Caulker for time being. Shaw also is a risk at 6 and may not play every game. Once those players have been downgraded consider upgrading either upgrading midfielders or strikers as you've got way to much invested in the back and playing 5 at the back very rarely works.
Open ControlsThanks a lot for the reply, I understand what you are saying about Courtois as he is definitely a risk so I will have a look around at the other keepers. I originally had Krul and Mannone but once I had picked the starting XI I realized that I could be missing valuable points in the keeper role. My search for a solid keeper continues! I will think long and hard about which defender to get rid of out of Isla and Caulker. Don't forget that Isla will be playing pretty much a right midfielder and will still receive clean sheets. Also, having 3 Centre backs instead of two this season may lower Caulker's goals ratio as he might have to share them around? Will definitely keep looking into this. Agreed about Shaw, I had him in, then took him out when I saw his injury, then back in again when I swapped Filipe Luis for Courtois. I'll look for a cheaper replacement, although as with Isla, I like the idea of him being a wingback rather than a fullback. (who do you think will be vying for his place? Young or someone else?) Cheers again for the analysis, means a lot! 🙂

Welcome to the fold, Beaver. Team looks good. I like the strategy of picking 15 players you can rely on, 4m fillers are a no-no for me. But don't fall into the trap of overinvesting in the team you support unless you also genuinely think these are the best guys to pick in fantasy. 5 at the back is unconventional but I actually think it could work. Good luck!
Open ControlsThanks for the advice Reedy! I agree about the fillers, they vary rarely go up in value which is surely one of the main goals at the start of the season! As you may be able to tell, I support Arsenal, but putting all bias aside, I do feel that they have plenty of good value players. Just because you mentioned it, I will be looking over all three once again. Thanks so much again for your advice! 😉
Open Controls
Welcome. Remember each posted RMT must be supplemented by sacrificing blood to the keyboard of your computer.. one sharp slice to the tip of any finger shall do.
I don't think Isla is good value and Liverpool have a poor defensive record though I expect them to improve this season.. Shaw may not be fit to start the season.
All solid picks in defence and attack, but maybe get in some cheaper defenders for Isla, Shaw and Lovren and use the money to upgrade JWPOpen ControlsThank you for the advice on RMT sacrifice Gimli (May I use your axe to do it?). I do fear for you over the long season of the FPL though! I know that you are wasted on cross-country! You dwarves are natural sprinters, very dangerous over short distances! :p
I shall downgrade at least one or two defenders (keeper too?), and look into upgrading one of my midfielders. (although I would love to directly swap JWP for a loaned out Gnabry).
Good luck on your quest, Gimli son of Gloin.Open Controls
Sorry about the overuse of solid haha.
I'm a little worried about Isla AND Caulker, but contrary to popular opinion I feel that Isla is the stronger of the two. He will be a complete wingback in a 3 5 2 formation, still gets clean sheets and surely will come in with plenty of assists?Open Controls
Soooooo...
Log into my FPL team and see 3 yellow 75% injury flags... all of a sudden I don't feel so good about my side!

THOUGHTS ON UNITED v VALENCIA
United looked comfortable in the first half defensively, as Valencia sat back and looked to counter, but were opened up too easily in the second half, when the opposition started to press higher up the pitch. Jones was the official Man of the Match with a good performance, and Tyler Blackett was also excellent, a more than capable replacement if Evans is injured.
Herrera was excellent in the first 45, and he, Fletcher and Mata played several dangerous through-balls for Rooney and Hernandez to run onto. On another day, United could have been 3 up by HT.
Rooney had 3 good chances: the penalty, failing to control Fletchers pass when one-on-one with the keeper, and a shot from the edge of the box which went just over. While he really should have scored, it is encouraging that he is getting opportunities and I just hope that he can convert one or two come Saturday.
Ashley Young may not be a great footballer, but he is a wonderful crosser of the ball. He played in 3 or 4 brilliant balls and also took a few corners. He looks a genuine short term prospect and is surely nailed on with fitness doubts surrounding Rafael, Valencia and Shaw.Open ControlsThem feckin apples....

It should be a fascinating battle of minds on Saturday. Two immensely experienced managers go head to head.
Louis Van Gaal V Garry Monk.Open ControlsGood morning all, I missed Community Shield so just have 2 quick questions - with goal & assist for Ramsey and Alexis only playing one half is the general consensus that you are better off saving the 1.5 with Ramsey? Also, wondering why Giroud did not start, is his place at risk? Thanks
Open ControlsGiroud is just not quite fit.
Most think Ramsey is the better bet, I have both.
Sanchez only played 45 minutes, but he was both one of our most advanced players, while tracking Kolarov, one of City's most advanced players. He covered so much ground.
Sanchez' performance wasnt encouraging, but his position was.Open Controls? hes not fit yet mate 🙂
or are you talking fpl perspective?Open ControlsSanchez? I still think he is fit enough for 90 against Palace. He just wasnt fit enough to play the Walcott role and follow Kolarov.
I meant position from an FPL perspective yeh. Very advanced.Open Controls
Thanks for replies, especially detailed one Wilshere. Was thinking I could upgrade Austin to Giroud by getting 2.5 elsewhere, one way of saving 1.5 was Ramsey over Sanchez
