This evening, we roll out the fourth instalment in our series of Burning Questions articles, focussing on some of the main dilemmas facing Fantasy managers for the season ahead. Having quizzed our contributors on Alexis Sanchez, Defensive Heavy Hitters and Robin van Persie, we now turn our attentions to Liverpool’s frontline as Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for life without Luis Suarez:

Having served up 197 points in 2013/14, Daniel Sturridge has been slapped with an 11.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – the third costliest player available for our 15-man squads. With Suarez now gone to Barcelona, though, Rodgers will be leaning more heavily than ever on Sturridge to deliver but bearing in mind the Reds striker managed only 26 league starts due to injury last season, there are fears the increased schedule, brought on by Champions League duties, may have an impact on his ability to steer clear of injury.

With only a few days remaining until the season gets underway, we ask the Burning Question – Will Daniel Sturridge flourish or flounder without Luis Suarez?

Tom Fenley says…
Liverpool have lost their most creative player after Suarez’s move to Barcelona – given that he scored 31 of his side’s 101 goals and assisted 12 times, that’s a lot to find from the rest of the team. However, Sturridge will now be the focal point of a Rodgers side that will maintain the high pressure, fast breaks and attacking football that suited the England forward so much last season. He scored 22 goals and assisted eight times but played less minutes than Suarez and I think he will still be a consistent points scorer, snapping up a goal almost every game.

I expect him to make up some of the difference from Suarez leaving and see him scoring 25-30% of Liverpool’s goals, gaining lots of bonus points. The issue could be that he will probably only score that one goal each game – he does not often get braces, so while giving him the captaincy should be a safe bet but with a low ceiling. It also seems highly unlikely he will be fit for the entire season. I’m expecting Sturridge to grab at least 20 goals and be in and out of my team due to injury; certainly at 11.5 he is easy to downgrade, though Sturridge is a little expensive and at the level where his value is in the balance, suggesting he will need to be delivering consistently to stay in the frame.

Paul says…
I don’t doubt his goal-getting abilities but for me, the negatives outweigh the positives this season. Sturridge turns 25 on September 1 yet this is his first season as a first-choice forward in a team competing on the European front and his injury record doesn’t bode well. Earlier this summer, he flew home early from the club’s US tour with a hamstring injury and with the fixtures coming thick and fast, Rodgers may try to pre-empt any knocks and niggles by managing his game time more often.

Suarez’ loss cannot be downplayed. Liverpool scored four times in five matches without the Uruguayan last season compared to 97 strikes with him in the first XI – that’s 0.8 goals and 2.9 goals per game respectively. Yes, Sturridge notched all four of those goals in Suarez’ absence but over the course of an entire season, that’s a tough ask of anyone to replicate, never mind someone with Sturridge’s dodgy injury record.

Price is an issue, also. Last term’s exploits have catapulted Sturridge into the premium price bracket this time around and while I wouldn’t have any problem with him at 11.5 alongside Suarez, is he an 11.5-priced player without his former sidekick? I’m not so sure. Impressively, Sturridge’s average of 6.8 ppg last season was the equal of the 12.0-priced Sergio Aguero but if I had to choose one of this injury-prone pair to justify their lofty valuation, my money would be on the man from the Etihad.

D1sable says…
Even with Europe and an onus to stay fit all season (something he has never managed before) its hard to foresee Sturridge failing. The guy is just too selfish and too good at finishing – a perfect blend for us Fantasy Managers. You could argue that although Luis Suarez’ departure harms him in terms of creativity, but it also benefits the England striker as it means he will more regularly take a large share of the bonus points on offer. At 11.5 he has had a significant hike in price and I don’t see him as truly essential; however, handing Sturridge the armband when he plays at Anfield will surely feel warm and fuzzy more often than not.

Applebonkers says…
This one is fairly tricky to assess as whilst games without Luis Suarez in the past two seasons suggested flourish with a capital F, there were only nine of them. It was a small if impressive sample. With Suarez it’s 22 goals and 13 assists in 34 matches, without it’s nine goals and one assist in nine matches. He’ll lose Suarez’s creativity yet at the same time he’ll be a more central figure, with less attacks gobbled up by an often-overwhelming player.

Step to the side for a second though and look back at those two records combined (43 apps, 31 goals, 14 assists). This is Class A Fantasy beefcake; it will take an awful lot for him to suddenly flounder. My only real concern is the addition of European football on a historically fragile body. Likewise, Liverpool bombed out of both domestic cups very early last season. It was an FPL dream; he was at home making Subway commercials whilst Aguero and the rest were flying around Europe. Long story short, Sturridge is still my bet to push the Manchester strikers for the Golden Boot.

7shadesofsmoke says…
The trickiest of questions in my opinion. Daniel Sturridge will really have it up against him as the main man to carry the weight of new expectation in Liverpool’s attack. If we stretch our minds back to the pre-Suarez Liverpool at the start of last season, the Reds were making a habit of sneaking a “Danny Sturridge 1, Opposition 0†scoreline with the emerging Fantasy talent quietly tucking away modest points ahead of Suarez’s unleashing. It wasn’t until his strike partner had returned to wreak havoc on the league’s defences that Sturridge and Liverpool really started scoring Fantasy interest for attacking returns. With European competition to contend with (added injury risk?), the loss of a truly world class strike partner and a bar of expectation set very high for attacking returns, Sturridge will really have his work cut out if he is to top last season’s heroics.

Gavigon says…
As long as Liverpool retain their attacking effectiveness Sturridge will make hay. He didn’t have any trouble when Suarez was suspended, and if anything becomes more of the main man. If he stays fit and, as long as teams haven’t got Liverpool’s attack ‘figured out’, as Chelsea and Newcastle showed right at the end of last year by defending with a wall of eight, he should be in for a huge campaign.

Roscola says…
I think we have to look around the Liverpool team for inspiration on this one. For starters, this almost feels like a make or break season for Philippe Coutinho. Brendan Rodgers will be reliant on the young Brazilian to step up and fill in for their lost playmaker but I don’t know whether he’s got it in him, personally. I also think that Rodgers will be keen to deal with last season’s biggest problem- defence. There were individual failings aplenty but a lot of it was it was down to a somewhat gung-ho approach. That system came so close to winning the title because it played to their strength – Luis Suarez. Without him, I think Rodgers might want to rein in their attacking verve just a little and protect the defence that little bit more. If that did happen, it would be a double-blow for Sturridge’s potential.

Jonty says…
With Luis Suarez now at Barcelona, Sturridge will be the focal point of Liverpool’s attack and the player his team-mates will be most keen to pass to in the box. His talent as a goalscorer is not in question and, in theory, he should benefit in a team where he should hog the opportunities and goals. But with Suarez gone, Liverpool’s attacking powers will be more limited. In addition, Liverpool will have European football and in Rickie Lambert the side has a ready-made replacement for Sturridge when rotation is needed. I think Liverpool as a whole, and therefore Sturridge, will do well this season but I can’t see them scoring the same amount of goals with Champions League fixtures and the loss of one of the World’s best forwards.

Ryan says…
I think Sturridge will flourish. Without Suarez drawing a lot of the play, I think the rest of Liverpool’s key players will step up and take greater responsibility. Sturridge in particular will have a prominent role as he spearheads the attack without his former strike partner. What’s important, however, is that Sturridge won’t be left to do it on his own; Brendan Rodgers has already stated how he wants to see Jordan Henderson get up more often to score goals and if he expects this from a central midfield player, he will certainly expect more from his attacking midfielders. This is a good thing for Sturridge because with others chipping in to help out, the frontman will have the freedom to play his own game and not have to shoulder most of the goal scoring responsibility. I think Sturridge would struggle if he had to carry the team, fortunately for him he will have strong support in attack.

Mark Says…
Sturridge is another one who looked a shoo-in for my initial lineup and then, as the barmy summer passed by, the doubts began to creep in. The 11.5 price tag is the key factor – that’s a big price to pay for any striker, let alone one with fragile limbs. Watching Sturridge play is a rollercoaster for Fantasy managers – he’ll make sure he has plenty of goal attempts but then, at every challenge, his owners are forced to wince and look away. Every time he’s subbed early, you wonder if he’ll make the next match. I can see him scoring 20 goals but then, I can also see the likes of Diego Costa, Romelu Lukaku and even Olivier Giroud running him close for total points given they’ll likely get more pitch time. Alongside that, I have to consider that Brendan Rodgers will look to get more from his midfield – that could see Raheem Sterling and Phillipe Coutinho offer strong value that could ultimately tempt me to overlook Sturridge.

Who is the better choice for the first few gameweeks only, Hendo or Young?

With Luke Shaw out for 4 weeks, Young should be the one to step in. Good form in pre season.

Hendo should be more attacking minded - what Rodgers wanted - but tougher opposition in GW2 and 3.

    Thoughts?

I was about to post on whether Henderson will be played differently this season, has Rodgers said that or are you sure about this? I hope so, because he'd be a cheap option for Liverpool coverage. Currently have him.

Rodgers said he challenge Henderson to score at least 10 goals, i.e. definitely shows his intention for him to roam forward?

Martinez could challenge Tony Hibbert to score ten goals this season it doesn't mean its gonna happen.

Personally whilst I think he'll be a good season pick for the money, I don't think hes a consistent point scorer. How long are you gonna keep faith if he doesn't score for 5 games or more?

Mata > Young frees up 3.5 to do Austin > Dzeko / Bony

Or downgrade Hazard and upgrade Austin > Costa

Personally I think Hazard will be sluggish early and Costa is the necessary Chelsea "coverage"

What are some of your strategies/rules that help you through the season in fantasy?

A lot of people are hung up on who will get the most points; but it has been rare to see strategies around trying to pump out the most team value as early as possible. Going template; instead of sliding in a few punts.

This is the first year I take part from the start; so I was curious if there is any suggestion of preparing to get out of the gate.

someone mentioned starting GW2 on the last page well the rules state that if you start anytime after the beginning of the season you will not get a wildcard at any other point in the season. So i'd scrap that idea and you might as well make a team and just take hits on everybody to get the same effect

      Is that a new rule?

I started at GW 2 in my first season. Honestly it went very well because I know who the early bandwagons and nailed on player are.

But yeah, even if there's a WC starting from GW 2. I'd rather start from GW 1 and take massive hits. Should still be more than 0 points

Ward and Clyne are decent but the other 3 you may as well not even have. IN MY OPINION this year any defender at 4.5/4.0 is just not worth it unless you only have 1 4.0m that you never play.

People get far too bogged down with starting positions on this site.

Blind got a goal and three assists and Janmaat got two assists. Bear in mind that van Gaal's Netherlands were largely a counter-attacking side, as you'd expect playing against teams like Spain, Chile, Brazil and Argentina, whilst United start the season against six definitely weaker sides. Young also has set pieces

He played left wing back five times, and left centre back twice. Elmo isn't an option because Hull are a defensive team, and unlike Young, he isn't an excellent crosser with van Persie and Rooney to aim at. Young in this formation, against the opposition United face, will be as attacking as your average right winger in a 4-4-2.

Yes they were counter attacking which is worrying if United set up in that manner with those fixtures they aren't going to have anything to counter against and could find themselves in frustrating games. That said I thing Young's going to have to do a lot more tracking back than he's hoping for against Swansea with the pace that they might carry on the flanks his attacking returns could be diminished

Not sure if anyone has covered in depth but some thoughts on Arsenal, particularly with the first few games in mind...

    GOALKEEPERS:

Szcesney - nailed, for now. He's earned his spot and fought off competition from Fabianski last year. I have to say though I would expect Ospina to put up a challenge of his own. I wouldn't feel too great about having Sczesney for this reason.

    DEFENCE:

Debuchy - Again, he's nailed and looks like he has a lot to offer as a fantasy asset going forward and as part of a usually v steady Arsenal backline (except in those big matches). I think Hector Ballerin is going to be deputy and he looks to be a very exciting prospect. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Ballerin get some game time this season, especially as Debuchy tends to get at least one suspension per season.

Mertesacker - Vice captain but may end up being captain a lot depending on the midfield situation with Arteta. He was very solid last season and a threat at set pieces too. I'd want to see how Arsenal gel as a defensive unit before getting him into a team though. He's also likely to miss the first couple of matches of the season. Chambers I think will deputise for Mertesacker/Koscielny alongside a likely CB addition. Greek CB Manolas has been mooted. Any incoming CB is unlikely to be a starter though.

Koscielny - Our strongest CB. His positioning and reading of the game is just insane, I love to watch him (at the Emirates) because his movement is so clever. He's less of a goal threat that Per so less of a fantasy prospect IMHO.

Gibbs - Another player who really shines when you watch him in the flesh. He covers so much ground each match and is a real forward asset too. I think it's only a matter of time before Gibbs starts to regularly get assists and the odd goal (Coleman like). He needs a run of fitness and a little composure. Could be a decent differential.

Monreal - Useful going forwards when he plays, which is when Gibbs is injured (so fairly often last season). I'm praying Gibbs gets the run of fitness he deserves - if he does he'll be in my team and Monreal won't even be a consideration.

    MIDFIELD:

Walcott - we all know how explosive Walcott can be in FPL but I'd wait and see just how he fits in when he gets back. His injury was pretty major too, it could take him a while to get back to his best (and fastest?). With Sanchez laying some claim to that RW spot I wonder if we might see Walcott/Sanchez interchange on the flanks a bit.

Cazorla - A funny prospect. He had an excellent first season, and scores important goals too. He'll start the first two/three matches in Ozil's absence but I'm not entirely sure where. His best position is #10 but can more often be found on LW these days. But Wenger might opt for Oxlade-Chamberlain there too.

Wilshere - huge season for Wilshere. It's now or maybe never. He showed glimpses of his potential in fits and starts last year and when he had a run of being fit without Ozil/Ramsey in the side last year he actually grabbed some points. I'm tempted to say he could have a Ramsey-esque season if his fitness holds. I think him and Ramsey will play as the double pivot at the base of midfield most of the time this season. When one goes forward the other one stays. If this is the case, Wilshere has the talent to be just as effective as Ramsey going forward too. One to watch for FPL.

Ramsey - As above position wise, he's a real box to box and has a huge engine. Was an incredibly important defensive player for us last season but the goals disguised that. I'm expecting another hugely productive season from Ramsey and I don't see why you would want to go without him. He's hungry in a way some of the other similar players in the game might not be (cheap shot but, Fabregas).

Arteta / Rosicky / Flamini / Diaby - In terms of FPL none of these players are viable options right now and I expect all will get varying gametime (if Diaby was fit that would be another conversation, but he's not). Worth staying away. Will include Zelalem in this bunch as we're a season off him really figuring for the first time. I do think Zelalem will be a FPL prospect in a couple of years if he continues to progress though.

Ozil - Was hugely promising at first last season but faded. He needs a big season too - though I think there might be a bit of a World Cup hangover for him and other German players. Worth watching, because if he could tie all his talents together and have a bit more threat in front of goal he could be a very viable alternative to Ramsey/Sanchez.

Sanchez - Classed as a midfielder... Difficult to know what to expect from Sanchez who is really only just getting back to full fitness and form following the World Cup. He has a lot of energy and upper body strength and will defend from the front much better than Cazorla or Walcott IMO. Has the speed to do very well from Ozil's passing range. Could find his way onto some of Giroud's clever holding play too. I think he'll get goals and be an FPL asset worth having this year, but may take a couple of games to get there.

Oxlade-Chamberlain - If he starts he could be a decent differential. He's always scored, has a terrific eye for goal especially outside the box and looked frightening when he hit top form last season. I remember Bayern looking very scared when he ran at the defense. If he's back up to full fitness we might get to see him in the first couple of matches and take a read of where he's at. Although when Walcott is back it's difficult to see where he might fit in (unless Sanchez plays as CF, which I'm not sure will happen).

    STRIKERS:

Giroud - Frustrating player but surely up there with Diego Costa in terms of rating how much quality service he'll receive up front. Giroud will get chances when he plays, but can he take them? He did very well with assists last season for a striker (11 I think from memory?) and with pacey players to pick up his clever interplay further up the field I wouldn't be surprised if he gets even more assists this season. I won't be getting him in straight away but I do think he could be a very good FPL asset offering assists and goals just by virtue of the quality around him.

Campbell - Will get opportunities from the bench. Not worth even thinking about until we see if he can take them though. Not sure he will be more than an impact player this season.

Sanogo - Again, I think Sanogo will get opportunities, and likely more than Campbell (I wouldn't be surprised if he started vs Crystal Palace). He's a menace and I don't think defenders like playing against him but he hasn't quite figured out the scoring goals part yet (though Wenger did say once he starts scoring he won't stop). As a differential he could come into play if Giroud has a lengthy layoff for whatever reason. Would be more likely to play CF than Sanchez or Walcott IMO because he fits the system better.

Podolski - Does well when he plays but I think he'll be an impact player too. A shame because he has got FPL pedigree when he gets minutes. Not worth considering unless there's another injury crisis though.

Gnabry - I think Gnabry has a lot of potential as an FPL player, can score goals and certainly get assists from the wing. There's quite obviously too many players ahead of him on the flanks and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a season loan. Aston Villa has been mooted as an option I believe and when Benteke is back to fitness I think the two of them could be dangerous and would consider Gnabry as a differential at that point.

I did include Chambers, in Mertesacker description. I think he'll be cover at CB to start this season for Per and Kos. Not a viable option beyond Koscielny's injury and Per's WC hangover.

I'm not buying into this press fed "huge season " hyperbole. Wilshere has plenty of time to come good.

I think so. I've been on Fabregas all preseason but Hazard is the ultimate flat track bully and with back to back games against two promoted teams, he looks destined to do well. Add the fact that he's explosive and on penalties, I'm scared to go without.

Hardest decision, it's also my last decision. Hazard really frustrated my last season with his slow start, which is the one thing in the back of my head that wants me to pick Fab. But at the same time, more experience gained from the prem now which is a plus. Hazard had a poor start and a poor end, and still managed 14 goals 10 assists or whatever. If he is consistent throughout the whole season then he could surpass Yaya last season. If fab played in the hole every game though, I think i'd select fab

And he got 5 assists in GW1 the year before that 😉

The first two fixtures are dreamy from a flat track bully like Hazard's perspective.

Unless I downgrade my GW 5&8 coverage Williamson (HUL LEI) to Duff (SUN WHM)?

Hmmmmm. Clyne is playable pretty much every week for the first third of the season barring GW1 so choose him unless they'll be used in a rotation.

            My def rotation is

            1. Chelsea / MU defense

            2. Clyne GW 2-9, except 7 (vs tot)
            - covered by Moore (vs BUR)

            3.CPL GW 2-9 except 5 8 (vs eve CHE)
            - covered by Williamson/Duff

One of my decisions at the moment too. Currently on Clyne as after GW1 I can play him each week - helpful with my cheap defence. And yes, wait for Crystal's best 4.5 to emerge

Will probably do this. Will have Chester as a placeholder instead.

Might even downgrade Williamson to Duff as I just realized he can cover pretty much the same GW (5,8)
