This week heralded the arrival of inevitable price rises and falls across the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, as the Fantasy Football Scout community sought to replace their failed pre-season targets with the proven bandwagons of Gameweek 1.

Our community writers and Hot Topic posters were on hand to offer advice for those looking to balance the books and off load their flops. We look back on the week’s best advice offered up, whilst also recalling how the community was presented with a powerful argument against discrimination in Fantasy Football and, for the first time, we offer up a regular round-up of the very best of this week’s custom statistics tables created and shared in the Members Area. In a packed summary, there’s also time to check in on the early leaders in a variety of community tournaments and competitions.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 1 was awash with disappointment for those investing in popular pre-season targets such as Man City’s Stevan Jovetic and Tottenham’s Ben Davies. Luckily, Arvin-ation was on hand to sift through the wreckage of our Gameweek 1 selections and recommend some immediate replacements.

Defenders that are capable of producing returns away from home can be valuable assets for those looking to revive early fortunes. Khalad’s article, published this past week, offered up an invaluable summary of the best options for earning defensive points on the road.

Meanwhile, The Puntmaster provided his latest view of the best punts on offer for upcoming Gameweek – look out for these in future weeks as the Puntmaster maintains what looks set to be a regular series.

Elsewhere, AZ was on hand to present this in depth analysis of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa’s goal threat – a timely piece ahead of a weekend that saw both players get on the scoresheet as the Blues maintained their impressive opening to the campaign.

Finally, Lanley Staural was keen to share up his list of the best Premier League fan forums, often a key source of information, speculation and gossip that can prove invaluable when searching out the inside track on team selection ahead of the Gameweek deadline.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Members Tables

Over in our members area, the community has been busily constructing some handy tables based on the data collected so far this season. The Sarjeant has been taking a look at some of the most attacking and creative midfielders so far, with a strong focus on successful passing in the final third.

Underlying statistics of forwards was the subject of Nolito’s table, while key figures of Gameweek 1’s most transferred in players came under Kalix’s gaze. Elsewhere, Arvin-ation took a look at Tom Ince in comparison to other midfielders, as well as a detailed look at Chelsea’s midfielders.

The criteria of chances created has helped Mexycan pinpoint some of the biggest threats in the final third and I created a couple of tables this week, examining bonus point magnets in defence and under-the-radar potential goalscorers.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how these work. We’re relaunching this feature very soon, boosted by the ability to search, tag and sort the custom stats tables created. Look out for news on that soon.

The Hottest Topics

With so many heavy hitters delivering points hauls in Gameweek one, there was an army of twitching knees on show. I was quick to react to trend, asking just what’s wrong with knee jerking anyway? This prompted to take Hamstergod to take a humourous look at popular Fantasy management phrases, such as the knee jerk, the hunt for differentials and the “essentialsâ€.

It seems that one of the most popular trades carried out this week saw Eden Hazard make way for the acquisition of Cesc Fabregas. Christina’s discussion hit the subject head on prompting much reaction. The Chelsea pair were also among the heavy-hitters discussed in BPLTeam’s “battle of the big boys” Hot Topic.

Meanwhile, the potential of Southampton’s re-invented assets came under expert focus from Lucy with her view on their progress. Lucy also offered an important reminder that there’s a growing interest in Fantasy Football amongst women: this proved to be this week’s most popular post with 65 up-votes at the time of writing.

BThomsen, our resident Norwich correspondent, provided another of the most popular posts this week. He’s been busy scouting their former player and new QPR signing, Leroy Fer on our behalf. His fascinating insight into his goal threat could present yet another mid-price asset in midfield.

The subject of FPL pricing, and in particular the value assigned to Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, came under scrutiny from Innsie who asked whether so many would have jumped on his bandwagon if he was priced significantly higher? Is the pursuit of a midfield bargain just as big a factor as his Gameweek 1 form?

And finally the key potential transfer discussed this week was undoubtedly Mario Balotelli’s move from AC Milan to Liverpool. The prospect came as bad news for two of our posters, Berbinho’s Forehead and Rayne Wooney, who each pledged to complete an unpleasant forfeit should the Italian arrive on Merseyside.

The Community Tournaments

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition 1,586 managers were left from the original 1,673 participants after Gameweek 1’s safety score was set at 43.

In the FFS Old Farts Club league, for those of advancing years, Seamy took the lead after Gameweek 1. Meanwhile, Back on the Horse held first spot in the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, a league dedicated to one of Fantasy Football Scout’s first posters. â€The Long and Winding Road†main league is already emerging as one of the most competitive, with Irish Madridista taking first place after Gameweek 1 with a score of 90 and an overall rank of 142.

In “AZ’s Early Bird Cupâ€, Lunchogonzalez was the top scorer out of its 32 participants, with a huge haul of 80 points. This was enough to dispatch 4vets, who also notched up an impressive score, of 70. Other winners include Ashlie and Baines on Toast.

Finally, watch out for Tuesday morning’s hot topic when we will be asking for nominations and votes for those wishing to follow Tom Fenley and HVT as the community champion in Gameweek 3’s scout picks competition.

My rival did excellent today and has been enraging me with "banter", who would you say has the better squad?

    Mine:

    Krul, Foster
    Terry, Pieters, Chester, Naylor, Chambers
    Eriksen, Cesc, Rambo, Siggy, Marney
    Rooney, Costa, Dzeko

    His:

    Bego (Gilks)
    Azpili, Kaboul, Naylor, Debuchy, Duff
    Mata, Ramsey, Haz, Siggy, Faurlin
    Rooney, Costa, Jelavic

If his, what should I do to improve mine? We started our league last season and this is the first time he's been ahead of me in points, fecker.

Downgrade Dzeko to 4.5 striker and upgrade Marney to Lamela/Eriksen/Nasri/Schurrle ... and you could do something with your defense. At least you can bring Bertrand in for Pieters.

if LvG decides to switch to 4-3-1-2 with Mata being the most advanced midfielder and AdM/Harrera/someone behind him, then yes...it should boost Mata's potential. Right now he is having to drop back to get the ball as the players behind him can't pass or create for their lives

Seems everyone is as stumped as me. Third time lucky:

What would you do with this defence?

Caulker, Dann (Orange flag), Terry, Chester (Red flag for 1 game), Duff

    Other factors to consider:
Goalkeepers: Krul & Foster (Happy with them but not keen to double up defensively)
    Austin (Yellow flag)
1m ITB (would prefer to save for a forward upgrade)

For me it would be between Dann and Chester.

People seem comfortable keeping Chester, especially if you got him at 4.5 and have the 0.1m buffer.

Dann, I don't know how far away he is and such, but Crystal Palace did just concede 3 goals against West Ham soooooooo....

For me it would be Dann

      1. Diva
        • 11 Years

Thanks. I'm thinking Dann is the first priority, but earlier today I was contemplating the wildcard with Caulker conceding four, Chester out, Duff v Man U and Ivan besting Terry, Austin injured and United failing to convince (I have Rooney and Mata).

I think I can probably cope without though. Just remove Dann and cross my fingers I guess.

I really don't want to, I'd prefer to save for later in the season. The big problem is falling prices that are difficult to recover. At least most (all?) of yours are eligible to play next week and could recover as options. Maybe start with Bojan, take a hit if you have to along the way, and give it a game or two more. The hardest thing is reminding yourself that early results don't always reflect season long performance.

Yeah, I'll definitely be holding my WC. I'll avoid most price drops this week hopefully and you're right, at least pretty much all of them are playing.

I've already planned for Bojan -> Aguero

Just hope Bruce and Bego can hold their prices and Eriksen I don't mind keeping for the long haul. He was good against QPR and unlucky not to get points.

Caulker may do well against Sunderland at home so maybe give him another week.

Terry is safe, don't worry about him. He almost registered bonus points if I recall correctly.

Austin is a worry and I'd start Duff against Man U 😀

Little summary of the transfer window so far - my opinion.

Arsenal - they have bought in quality no doubt but still haven't addressed their needs. Debuchy will be a fantastic signing. Chambers for 16m seems a bit steep but he'll return the value as he vrows older. Sanchez is a world class player and a massive name. But I feel Arsenal needed a world class DM and striker over a world class winger. With Verm leaving, who they got a good amount of money for, I'd expect Arsenal to sign a back up CB. They've spend above 60m without even addressing their biggest needs.

Chelsea - Hammer. Nail. Boom. Perfect window. Both incomings and outgoings. Lukaku for 28 and Luiz for 50. Jose is laughing right now. Costa may just be the difference with them winning the league. Cesc is the best midfielder in the league. I'll leave it at that.

Man City - A mixed window so far. They've bought in some good squad players in Sagna and Lamps who were first teamers last year but Willy and Managala seem far stretched. I could name you 10 centre backs better than Mangala, who would be 20m cheaper too. Fernando will be an unsung signing. He's brilliant. Brings balance and strength.

Liverpool - they've spent a lot and have bought quantity in. They've addressed their needs though and have got 2 players in every position. Some of the fees are very questionable such as Lallana and Markovic. A lot of trust in young players but it's their philosophy. Balotelli could turn out to be the biggest coup/mistake of the summer. Lovren has been their best signing imo and I think they've done enough to secure a champions league spot.

Man United - a lot have tipped them to reclaim a top 4 finish. Judging by the signings, I don't think so. Still 2 centre backs and 2 midfielders away from where they need to be IMO. It's a transitional period and progression is key for United. They'll be a force again in 2 or 3 years imo. They've overpaid ridiculously though.

Still expect United and Arsenal to bring bodies in, not so much Chels Pool City.

Mangala is actually a good CB and possibly among the 20 best in the world. BUT he has to prove himself in the PL and in a huge team. Lallana is far from questionable being a very good quality player but they could have signed a world class player instead of Balotelli(so mediocre).

In terms of value for money, City could've done better than Mangala. And if they wanted to spend a lot then surely a Hummels, Benatia would be more appropriate.

Balotelli is an idiot. A fool. He's a million things. But he's not mediocre.

I have Bojan upfront, with 2.2 in the bank. I want rid of Bojan and willing to spend the full 7.7 to replace, I may even use the 2.2 to upgrade wanyama and play a 3-5-2 for a period if I find an applicable player. Anyone got any ideas? I am leaning towards Pelle w/ S'hamptons run in the next 10 or even Tadic for the Mid for the same reasons.

Any help? Stumped me this one as no striker worth anywhere near the 7.7 has shown a glimpse of worth yet.

Wondering - is Naismith suffering the lack of attention because of his cheap price?
If Lukaku had scored two goals, we'd be all over him as an option.

Naismith seems to be nailed, better underlying stats than almost all forwards (except Roo,Costa,Ade). And one of the games was against Arsenal. Plus (and more importantly) the midfield that his price allows....

What am I missing? His under performance last year?

I think he is taking on more because of Lukaku's injury. My worry is how long he can sustain this form? A good next 2 but then Man U & Liv, both away. His price is rising steadily.

There's been a lot of poo pooing of Naismith, now and before the season started. He's been in my team since the game opened it's doors and made my mind up to play 3-5-2.
Another way to look at this is everyone listed their budget 8th attacker, Naismith at 5m looks pretty good I bet if you resign yourself to 2 big forwards.

I am really struggling with Caulker! He is a threat going forward but defensively QPR look atrocious!! If i transfer now, it will cost me 4 pts, worth it?

FT and 2.0m itb. Does anything need to be done here, or best off saving?

    Begovic
    Kelly - Clyne - PvA
    Eriksen - Mata - Siggy - Ramsey
    Dzeko - Costa - Rooney

    Gilks -- Marney - Ferdinand - Chester

Good team mate, my only worry would be Kelly, I dont think that Palace will be as good defensively this season. Newcastle have a decent run of fixtures and seem solid. Maybe you could consider Kelly to Colo or Dummet? Good luck!

What are people's opinion of Giroud?

I am fairly convinced he will be fine to play next weekend.

I know he gets a bad rap here but he is truly Arsenals only CF currently. I think they learned the hard way that Sanchez cannot be a target man by himself.

With that said I think he may be the cheapest route to a decent attacking side.

He is set to drop tonight but could be a terrific 3rd FWD.

I don't think he will be benched any other EPL game. At least for the near future.

Having him as a third striker is the problem though. If you get two big hitters and cover the players you need in midfield it's hard to bring him in, especially when they're are better, cheaper options.

        Who is better and cheaper?

There are no strikers you would start every week below 8.5.

He is essentially fixture proof as the only CF in a top 6 team. And 8.5 to boot.

        Who else? Adebayor perhaps?

Giroud at 8.4 may be better.

A cheap third striker is someone like Jelavic.

Quite clearly not fixture proof as he hasn't started the first two games.

My point was there is more value in spending the money in midfield than having Giroud as your third striker.
