It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in β€œthe hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

What are the chances that Pelle gets rested this weekend in favour of Long? Koeman should be pretty confident against QPR and Pelle will have a lot of games coming up, though no midweek game next week crucially.

what are your 'rules' when youre picking your team, captain or making changes?

    - if i have 3 players from the same team i will never captain one of them - so cant captain costa this week.
    - never pick a formation; pick players on form with good fixtures
    - try not to double up on defence from same team

    1. BeachBadger
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

No offence but that first rule is a bit dumb. If you have three players from the same team it's because theyre probably one of the in form team big teams at the minute and not picking one of their players as captain whien they are probably the obvious choice could be suicide. I guess you're spreading the risk but what if Chelsea are playing QPR and there ar eno stand out other captains. Ar eyou telling me you wouldnt put the band on Costa?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 15 Years

if you count the captain as 2 you have 12 players in your team.
with 4 players in the same team (1/3) of your points are dependent on one team in one match. if that result doesnt happen for you youre screwed.
        its about spreading the risk.
if youve got a semi decent team theres always an alternative option,

      - I choose my captains based on how I think they will do individually, irrespective of if I have other players from their team in my team.
      - Generally stick to 3-4-3
      - Don't mind a defensive double up if they have good form and fixtures e.g Southampton currently.

      - It is about who will be your highest scoring player in the GW, so it doesn't matter who else you have.

      - I follow this rule as well, for variance

True but Pardew should at least be given time to work with the players that were brought in over the summer, Cabella, Aarons and now Riviere (maybe even Cisse) are performing well and are only going to slowly grow, plus we are yet to see Siem de Jong would is arguably the best player they signed in the window. If a new manager came in these players might go to waste due to the implementing of a new style of play etc..

Interesting stat for Rooney lovers/Carrick haters. 57.9% of Rooney’s passes this season have been backwards

42% of Rooney's passes went backwards on Sunday. When deployed at no. 10, United’s main creator. Compared to 8% of Di Maria's

I believe he regularly finishes in the top 1k-5k but I can't say for certain as he doesn't like to share his ID. usually very good with his captain choices.

take that for what it is, but he seems a trustworthy good fella so I doubt he has much to gain by lying. smart guy.

            Pretty good.

Not taking a hit is a safe tactic and usually guarantees a decent rank. It would be hard to win it with that philosophy though, I think.

I actually read some analysis on this but lost the link.

From memory Examiners try and spread out the answers evenly so first answer all the questions you know. In the gaps where you don't know it's less likely to be the same letter as the question before or after it so guess a different option.

The answer 'all of the above' is right more than 50% of the time

If it's multiple choice and you don't have a clue, go for the longest answer. It normally takes more words to write a correct answer as it has to be completely right, an incorrect answer can just be bobbins. Unless one of the answers is "all of the above" of course.

      1. joey
        • 15 Years

Also, if you don't know what the right answer is start ruling out ones you know are wrong. You could get to the right answer that way or make it a 50/50 guess instead of a 1 in 4 chance.

Go through all the ones you think you know. THEN for the ones you dont know at all, choose ONE letter (A,B,C,D etc) and stick with that one letter for all unknown answers. Statistically speaking, you have more of a chance to bring home the 3pts.

Yep, mad to lose him with the fixtures from GW8. Unless it's for a player of ADM's quality, or Wally πŸ˜‰

Do you still have your FT? I'd change DDG for Forster/Heaton if I were you, despite 2 home games. .

Nope, I shipped Chester for Duff this week. Really hope Rooney doesn't blank this week, would be much less of a headache for me!

Just got a call from LVG. He was wondering if I was available to lace them up and lead the united defense this weekend, given their poor defensive performance and the fact that everyone seems to be injured. I told him to contact my agent.

Funny thing is that I would probably be an upgrade.

Yep, by sheer number of transfers in. Not sure how these sites continue to make mistakes when the changes aren't that hard to see.

I've given up trying to figure it out. Some bandwagon risers are obvious but short if that it's a complete crapshoot.

Yes it is, no doubt. I don't know how they projected Ivanovic and Fab to rise, transfers are trickling in for them.

That is absolutely fantastic. Got a healthy 0.1 rise in TV from Ulloa just in the last 3 days, while also avoiding the 0.1 drop from Naismith. That 0.1 change in Ulloa's price will make a big difference if I look to upgrade him in a few weeks πŸ™‚

I would think that Rooney would be the first out the door, as with relatively poor form, a relatively hefty price and relatively poor fixtures, he looks unworthy of ownership. The fact that he is an attacker - the group that traditionally score the most points - means that the opportunity cost of holding onto Rooney is high, as it is likely that similarly priced or cheaper offensive assets will be scoring.

Then I would say de Gea, although not for a hit. That one is simple - because I just don't see utd keeping a clean sheet, but I wouldn't make it first priority, b/c the maximum you are likely to be missing out on by not switching him out is 4 points a week, therefore representing a lower opportunity cost.

Finally - Ramsey. I think he may yet come good - and I'd be prepared to give him another 2 weeks to prove his worth (albeit against difficult opposition).

Just my 2 cents - could be completely wrong πŸ˜›

Agree. Sold Rooney for Welbeck yesterday to free upfunds to rebuild defence. And keeping Ramsey.

Thanks a lot mate, really appreciate the long reply!

Was thinking the same, Ramsey has HUL,sun,BUR,swa after the Chelsea game which will probably make me to keep him.

I would love to get rid of De Gea if I had a FT. But if Rooney doesn't blank and United don't keep a clean sheet on Saturday, he'll be the first out of the door for me.

Rooney out is the first priority though!

      1) Rooney
      2) De Gea
      ................
      3) Ramsey

      is how I see it
