It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

      Not according to the scoreboards and some on here who have triple.

      How long it continues though is different...

      To each their own. Too much risk in triple def from ANYONE imo. There will be weeks you get 3-6 total from all three.

    Almost set on this from week 6-8...

    Bego
    Chambers. Clyne. Moreno
    Siggy. Fabregas. Sterling. DiMaria
    Pelle. Aguero. Costa

    Could do it noe but would be for -8

      I wouldn't. Moreno will come good either def, att or preferably both. Shrek will outscore Falcao imo. Sideways.

        Already have Clyne and Forster so there's no urgency to get another Saints defender but i'm just thinking out loud. Care to share how come you think roonpig will outscore Falcao though?

          Roon nailed on every week. Falcao not.
          Falcao not a sniff at set pieces.
          Roon hardest worker in crap team.

          Bookmark Roon as finishing season with more fantasy pts than Falcao....deeper role or not.

        So do I but there's so many question marks over his head atm. I'm well aware what Aguero is capable of even with limited minutes, for example on his debut he only played 30mins and got 2 goals and an assist.

    Plan for this team by gw8.

    Forster
    Clyne • Ivanovic • Baines [Naylor, Moore]
    Fab • Sterling • ADM • Siggy [Boyd]
    Costa • Pelle • Welbeck

      I'd look to get rid of Ivan to upgrade elsewhere... but to be honest it all looks potentially pretty darn good. Maybe if Siggy dries up you could do it to upgrade him or one of Pelle or Welbz if Falcoa or Aguero get on fire. Looks good for now!

      That looks like the perfect team right now I'd say. How far away from that are you?

      I'm pretty near that myself, though I prefer to go with Ulloa instead of Welbeck in order to have 5 strong midfield options to rotate somewhat.

        • 15 Years

        3 moves to this team. Welbeck is there as a route to points from Arsenal as I plan to drop Ramsey. Ulloa is on fire, but I really doubt if he can continue that high conversion rate.

        I have 5 strong MF now ... Fab - Sterling - ADM - Ramsey - Siggy

        But I don't feel good with the front line likes ... Costa - Welbeck - Naismith

    I've got 2FT and am strongly considering doing the following for a -8:

    Rooney --> Aguero

    Thoughts?

      Such a fickle fickle game is FPL. Just one game week can cause so much hyperbole and hysteria. A well thought out solid logical pick one week can turn into a horrid chump stinking out your team the next. Like Adebayor at home vs West Brom last week... or Balotelli for most of the season most likely...

      1 week in FPL:

      Goal or Assist = great player
      Nothing = rubbish player

    AR, who are the predicted price changes tonight?

    1. Aaron Ramessi - Straya

      Fabregas and Ivanovic, even Forster...but really, who knows? 😀

      I wouldn't be surprised to see Lovren falling, or even Rooney, though thats unlikely as he's been picking up points here and there.

      As for risers the 3 outstanding candidates are Fab, Ivan, and Forster.

    Is it worth doing?

    Sanchez + Lukaku --> Costa + Fabregas

    for a 8 point hit 🙁

      I think Sanchez will come good. That and the NLD at Emirates is often a goalfest.

      I'd find some other way to get Costa in. Fab can wait, IMO

        Thanks man 🙂
        problem is that I am .5 short of doing lukaku to costa [only 1.5 in bank]

        Problem is that I am not sure if its worth to get 4 or 8 point hit just to fit costa because first of all I want him to fail badly as I have lot of ground to cover [thanks to costa].

        So I am thinking about going with some different captain choice anyway.Maybe sanchez

        But then if costa scores another hattrick my season will end there itself

          I wouldn't captain a player who didn't even make an appearance in the last premier league game

    Which defenders should I play this week?

    Ivanovic (AVL) Duff (wba) Wisdom (BUR) Wilson (NEW) Moore (cry)

    Home defenders are the obvious choice, but BUR-WBA surely can't be another 0-0, can it? 😉

      Ivanovic [Chance of clean sheet + attacking potential]

      Duff [because I can see burnley finally scoring]

      Wilson [Home against newcastle]

      or maybe you should play both duff and wisdom [who knows it will end 0-0 as burnley can't afford to concede and then score like leicester city.So it will be a tight match]

          You cannot predict injuries but it depends how risk averse you are.

    Is Newcastle enough of a donkey show to consider Krul > Forster with my last FT? Mannone is my other GK. I hate the ideal of wasting a FT on a GK...

      Do it..1 clean sheet and you will be able to cancel out the hit..for long term it's good..

      Id be happy enough playing Mannone this week. Save the FT in case something more pressing comes up next week

    Hmm still playing with my WC (its fun being on a WC but boy can you invest some serious time!)

    Begovic myhill

    Baines, Invan, Clyde, Duff, Hutton

    ADM, Sterling, Fab, Sig, Schneilderlin

    Pelle, Costa, Ulloa

    I could go Scheilderlin -> Quinn
    and then Ulloa -> Welbeck

    What do you think or is their a transfer I am missing?
