It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in β€œthe hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

    Alright my entire plan boils down to this so please help...

    I need and want Fab back.

    So...

    Baines & Chadli >>> Chambers & Fabregas.

    Bad part is it is for -8, but I'm thinking price rises and falls, and obviously LONG TERM.

    Go....

      seems strange that while everyone is bringing Baines in or looking at it soon, you're shipping him out..

      also isn't Chadli the only one at Spurs doing anything consistently?

    Taking hits......

    Are you more worried about head to head or are you really concerned you might miss the top 100,000 by a few points?

    Personally I'm always looking at my head to head league opponent and wondering if taking a -4 will kill me or be manageable.

      Also.....if you make up the 4 pts on the first week, ie your pickup scores 10 and your player you dropped got a 2, isn't it worth taking a hit? I see so many "don't take the hit" posts here that I actually think it's poor advice most of the time. This is a long season and you can easily make back the lost points over the course of the season if your making good picks. Anyways...

        Yeah it can be worth it definitely especially if you captain the player and he does really well. Just took my first hit of the season this week =P

      Care more about OR these days. H2H is fun but it can be such BS that I don't get too worried about it. The last few years I haven't won my H2H but have had the highest overall score by far.

        Well I'm involved in a money league that's H2H so it's my main focus. It's not easy taking hits, but for my overall it doesn't bother me one bit.

          Yeah a -4 over the course of a season is nothing, but could kill you in a certain week in H2H. Just gotta really analyze the risk for that I guess!

      H2H is fun comp but that's it, OR is where it's at.
      The fun part of H2H is that it really gives everyone a chance because of the random factor.

      I learned this the hard way, losing my only H2H so far by 1 point because I took a rather non-urgent hit. Never again, unless absolutely necessary for injury reasons.

    Too much in the defence?
    Plan for this team by gw8.

    Forster
    Clyne • Ivanovic • Baines [Naylor, Moore]
    Fab • Sterling • ADM • Siggy [Boyd]
    Costa • Pelle • Welbeck

      I'd look to get rid of Ivan to upgrade elsewhere... but to be honest it all looks potentially pretty darn good. Maybe if Siggy dries up you could do it to upgrade him or one of Pelle or Welbz if Falcoa or Aguero get on fire. Looks good for now!

      That looks like the perfect team right now I'd say. How far away from that are you?

      I'm pretty near that myself, though I prefer to go with Ulloa instead of Welbeck in order to have 5 strong midfield options to rotate somewhat.

      1. NATSTER
        • 15 Years

        3 moves to this team. Welbeck is there as a route to points from Arsenal as I plan to drop Ramsey. Ulloa is on fire, but I really doubt if he can continue that high conversion rate.

        I have 5 strong MF now ... Fab - Sterling - ADM - Ramsey - Siggy

        But I don't feel good with the front line likes ... Costa - Welbeck - Naismith

    I've got 2FT and am strongly considering doing the following for a -8:

    Rooney --> Aguero

    Adebayor --> Ulloa

    Siggy -- > Hazard (have a feeling he's going to explode this week)

    Coleman --> Chambers

    Thoughts?

      Rooney is either going to perform this week or get shifted by a lot of teams.

      Siggy -> hazard (this will sound wierd) looks a bit of a flat transfer to me
      Coleman you could leave until GW8

      Such a fickle fickle game is FPL. Just one game week can cause so much hyperbole and hysteria. A well thought out solid logical pick one week can turn into a horrid chump stinking out your team the next. Like Adebayor at home vs West Brom last week... or Balotelli for most of the season most likely...

      1 week in FPL:

      Goal or Assist = great player
      Nothing = rubbish player

      You can check by the Transfers In and Out counts...

      Pretty obvious that Ramsey>ADM, Naismith>Ulloa, and Rooney>Pelle have been the top 3.

      I did the later two of those 3 this week with 2FT's.

        problem is that I am .5 short of doing lukaku to costa [only 1.5 in bank]

        Problem is that I am not sure if its worth to get 4 or 8 point hit just to fit costa because first of all I want him to fail badly as I have lot of ground to cover [thanks to costa].

        So I am thinking about going with some different captain choice anyway.Maybe sanchez

        But then if costa scores another hattrick my season will end there itself

    Which defenders should I play this week?

    Ivanovic (AVL) Duff (wba) Wisdom (BUR) Wilson (NEW) Moore (cry)

      Ivanovic [Chance of clean sheet + attacking potential]

      Duff [because I can see burnley finally scoring]

      Wilson [Home against newcastle]

      or maybe you should play both duff and wisdom [who knows it will end 0-0 as burnley can't afford to concede and then score like leicester city.So it will be a tight match]

          Sounds a bit kinky for my liking but yes.

    Nothing = rubbish player

      That pretty much sums up the game.

      Currently Aaron Ramsey and ADM are the best examples on both sides of the fence.
