It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

            I go mental and galacticos in the likes of Bale Ronaldo Rooney Messi. Pique. Ramos

              The lower league approach is the only way that works to keep it interesting. I find that promotion playoffs are the most exciting games overall due to your entire league season coming down to 3 games. I tend to always win the CL so once my teams qualify I win everytime which is really boring.

      It's way faster than 14. I don't know if I like it yet. I've been struggling. Can't keep the 60% posession with 92% passing like I used to. Gotta figure out which formation is best...

            Ive only experimented on the demo, so I'm not sure, but it basically makes your players move to the ball to reciew short passes. Same formation and same players made a massive difference for me.

      Always like the 1/2 Star Challenge: pick a 1/2 star League 2 club and work them up the Prem. Top difficulty of course. You really gotta work the market and manage your team. Grueling at times but so, so much fun. And when you finally sign your first real talent is good times.

    a = Rooney & Lamela ----> Costa and Tadic (leaves 0.0 in bank. I have 2 FTs)

    c = wildcard team below

    Hazard Ramsey Di Maria Siggy

    A) Krul->Forster/Schmeichel
    B) Bruce->N.Taylor/PvA

    a stay of execution for pardew or a turning point?

    1. Geordienufc1
      • 12 Years

      A stay of execution (hopefully). If we turn the results around, as we should because as you say we do have a few quality players, it will not be because of Alan Pardew. I have a feeling though that scrapping draws and scraping cup wins is going to prolong the problem, and I would rather just start afresh with a new manager now regardless of whether we begin to improve. Not going to happen though.

          Indeed, I misspoke.

          On the one hand, I hope that, although I want him gone right away, such results only "temporarily" alleviate the pressure on Pardew, and are not used as justification for his long-term job-security.

          Realistically, a win or two, and he could be around for most of the season before his job is questioned again. I would hope that the end could come sooner than that.

      I would leave. Even if fab gets an assist or even two, you are only just drawing level with the points it took to get him in + (presumably) Chadli's 2.

    Ok, do I need a wildcard on this team for next week?

    Players in capitals are areas that I think need improving:

    Begovic
    Terry/LOVREN/Bertrand
    Siggy/Fab/Sterling/Ramsey
    ROONEY/Diego Costa ©/Ulloa

    KRUL /ZAHA/CHESTER/Hutton

    0 FT, 0.5 in the bank

      Not worth the wildcard tbh. All the highlighted still have potential to score points.

    My view on possible Costa rest:

    He has AVL/spo/ARS in the next 3. Surely Arsenal game is the toughest and most important. So if he plays in Lisbon how can he be fit for weekend game. Jose said that he could play only one game in week. For me he will certainly start against Villa.

      He could easily start on the bench and come on if needed. But I do think he'll start.

      my jose's logic, if he can only play once in a week, and plays vs sporting, then he can't play either of the other 2 games.

    When is the right time to play that wild card?

    I was having this discussion with a mate, who suggested it might be time for me after an average round score of 34. Not horrible but nothing amazing, two bright sparks in my team (sterling and Clyne) the others all blanks.

    His theory is that the longer you let these out of form players drift along, the more you drift round by round maybe 10 points at a time compared to your league rivals.

    I put it down to poor captain choices, missing the boat on the costa hat trick and captaining sterling.

    Points of 54, 52, 50, 50, 34 total of 236 and sub 1 mill rank.

    What do you say then?

      There is no best time. Just when your team needs it or there is a DGW. Whichever comes first.

    Are any other Costa owner (like me) secretly hoping he gets sent off soon to make the game more interesting? 60% ownership makes the game so sterile, and it's near enough impossible to captain anyone else when he has home games. At least ADM has broken the midfield template somewhat (and hazard and Walcott May follow soon), and it would be nice if the same could happen in attack if Sturridge could catch fire and Costa stutters abit.

      Everyone would just go for sturridge/Aguero. Won't change much.

        A big portion would stay with Costa though. Would be a more even split between Costa/aguero/Sturridge than the current 60/10/10 split

    Very optimistic going into the weekends GW

    Forster
    Ivan - Clyne - Taylor
    Fabs - Sterling - ADM - Siggy
    Costa - Aguero - Ulloa

    Thanks for the advice on Clyne/Bertrand

    I've been looking at the best players overall so far (top 5) and noticed not 1 of them have hazard they all have fabregas. Is fabregas essential? I've had haz from start of season and I'm now on a wc. Should I replace him for fab?

    1. TD Champ

      I believe Fabs is essential atm. Allthough Hazard could score a brace any GW

      Fab has had more points and he's cheaper. Pretty close race though so I wouldn't say he's essential as it's week-to-week atm

        In the 5 GW's Haz has actually outscored Fab 3-2. Not sure if it's helpful but surely interesting
