Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

A four-goal blitz against Tottenham last time around has ensured Sergio Aguero is this week’s runaway leader, with almost 50% of the votes cast. Up to nine goals for the season, the Man City forward has netted in six of his eight appearances so far, and up against a West Ham side with a single shut-out all season (at home to QPR), Aguero has already risen 0.2 in price heading into the weekend deadline.

Graziano Pelle is some way back in second spot. The Southampton striker has earned just under 16% of votes cast as he prepares for the visit of Stoke – bearing in mind his last three appearances at St Mary’s have returned 13, 9 and 15 points in the FPL game, though, the Italian looks a viable option. Team-mate Dusan Tadic earns 4% of votes after serving up a goal and four assists at home to Sunderland – the playmaker has now produced 34 points in the last three in front of his own supporters.

Diego Costa remains in contention for the league leaders’ trip to Old Trafford. Only 4% are considering the Chelsea forward with the armband due to Jose Mourinho’s mind games, but if given the chance against United’s dodgy defence, he has to be considered, having netted in all but one of his seven appearances.

Raheem Sterling is an armband option for some as Liverpool prepare for a home clash with Hull. Having scored or assisted in five of his seven starts, the youngster has remained a consistent option – after moving to the lone forward role against Real Madrid in midweek, he’s persuaded 3% of Fantasy managers to hand him the captaincy. Gylfi Sigurdsson is similarly backed for Swansea’s home encounter with Leicester, though is struggling for form, having blanked in four of the last five.

Further down, Arsenal and Spurs are overlooked ahead of enticing showdowns with Sunderland and Newcastle. Danny Welbeck (3% of votes) and Alexis Sanchez (1%) face a Black Cats backline that shipped eight to Southampton last weekend, whilst Christian Eriksen (1%) and Nacer Chadli (0.8%) will be looking to take advantage of a Magpies defence that have kept out their opponents just once in the last six.

Is it wrong to prefer Welbeck due to sun, BUR and the fact he had a happy loan spell at the Stadium of Light??

Hey guys I am new here, how are you?
    Great site by the way.

I am hoping you can give your opinion on what I just did please.

Heaton(Gilks) - Taylor, Baines, Clyne (Ivanovic, Duff) - Di Magia, Eriksen, Sterling, Siggy (Cork) - Wellbeck, Pelle, Aguero.

Just did Costa and Fabregas for Aguero and Eriksen.
Planning to bring Hazard or Costa next week.

    What do you think?

As for your transfers, you've already made them and they not bad. Eriksen seems to be on the up and up & with the uncertainty regarding Costa (potential price drops to monitor as well), there's no better option than Kun it would seem.

So, can't decide who to downgrade out of these :

Ivanovic - too expensive for decreased attacking threat
Adm - good form but poor fixtures
Sterling - reasonable form but Liverpool look bad
Downing - only slight differential and think he could do well but expensive for 5th mid
    Welbeck - ok form
Costa - doubt to play but if he does could miss big haul

@Wakey (if still here).... I agree on the FF Fix site.. the 7 days is silly. There's been a big change in thoughts and trends right in the middle (ie the games). The GW would be much better.

And @Doosra... I think it must show your team at the end of the last GW. The transfers you've made aren't available to anyone but you, so they cant pull that out. And I guess they're recommending transfers, so it probably works on the assumption you haven't done anything yet.

(And for the record, the recommendations are terrible! 😛 )

I find the color scale quite dull here, everythings just green and grey, and surely a website in 2014 should be able to load new comments automatically, let you search through an article and memberlist easily etc..

            • 12 Years
            11 years, 1 month ago

Fancy pictures doesn't make a good website. The green and grey is the house style.

Would you want new comments loading automatically on a Saturday morning? If you want that, use totalfpl chat.

This place is successful for a reason.

Green and Grey is an easily recognisable colour scheme which identifies the website without an in-your-face graphic.

The comments were trialed to load automatically and it crashed. The sheer load on this website is ridiculous and it just isnt possible to have automatic comments without loss of usability.

There is a search tool in the works.

    I have Costa, Aguero, Wellbeck.

The way I see it, its a no brainer to do Costa > Pelle tonight.

Financially, I'd lose £0.1m on Costa before deadline, and potentially make £0.1m on Pelle.

I have 2 FT so if i save the other, I can afford to buy Costa back for QPR.

Even if Costa plays vs Utd/QPR, Pelle should outscore him.

        Whats a sensible estimate though?

There's 3.3 million FPL players, of which I'd guess 10% use this site regularly, and of that 330k I'd guess 1/3rd are members, so about 100k members. Subscription is £12.50 or £15 depending on when you subscribe.

That means they pull in between £1.25-1.5 million per season on this site. Thankfully there aren't any annoying adverts splashed about the place so thats not a revenue stream really.

Probably being generous on the numbers, but say that the numbers are over £500,000... what happens to that money here? I'm guessing its the following:

        - 100k to salaries for around 3 admins
        - subsription fees to Opta

They probably make some money from being in partnership with PaddyPower and a couple of other fantasy games. Whoever owns this site must make quite a tidy sum!

I think you might be over-estimating slightly!

What should I do with my 1FT and 0.1m in the bank? Going to keep Costa and ADM I think.

    Begovic
    Clyne Naylor Wisdom
    Fabregas DiMaria Sterling Siggy
    Aguero Costa Pelle

    Gilks; Davis, Chambers, Duff

    A) Naylor -> Alcaraz
    B) Something else
    C) save the transfer?

If you had Costa, Aguero and Pelle. What would you do?

No particularly appealing long term alternatives. Lukaku probably most a
tractive in the short term given Everton's fixtures and also Welblack in with a shout.

    What do you think?

Thoughts on West Ham vs. Man City this weekend? Can see West Ham getting to grips with them and making it difficult. Big Sam tactics all over and he won't want to give them any easy pickings. For that reason I'm going Pelle over Aguero as captain, as our defence has looked shaky and we conceded a few goals at Sunderland.

I think Aguero is almost unplayable on the form he's showing.

Pelle at home is a great shout though.

Possibly, but West Ham have proven they are no mugs. Much better side and Aguero played against us and did nothing. Given the right defence and little room I can't see him returning much.

I'm actually tempted to back the Irons to win this one.

All depends on the first 20 minutes , early City goal they will run away with it , if not will be a good battle

hmm, pretty damning on Stoke but you are the expert. I wasn't considering Pelle because I thought the opposite.
West Ham to win 2-0 would be ideal.

no and no. you will want costa back the following week and for me it's either fab OR haz. team looks solid, i'd wanna try upgrade defence though. how much in the bank?

ah ok. i was gonna say try get jagielka in but doesn't seem possible. if you can do the costa change and still get him back in next week then by all means go for berahino, but i'd be more inclined to do boyd-> eriksen instead of haz. far easier fixtures and has cracking FPL form. he'll be all the rage here after this weekend.

Will there be any more news/ press conferences before the Chelsea United game? It looks more and more likely that he'll miss a game or two now that he's been in hospital. Reckon Costa and ADM /to Tadica and Aguero makes sense?
