This week’s ScoutCast is a throwback – a return to the days when Granville moaned about his team of red flags and names like Robin van Persie and Yaya Toure dominated our thinking.

Granville and I slip into such subject matter like it’s a pair of old slippers, whilst assessing the Aguero fall-out, the Dzeko option, Ivanovic versus “Dave” Azpi and how I’ve modelled my Fantasy Football management style on Roy Hodgson.

We roll out the regulars and lament the demise of the ScoutCast team – eliminated in the opening round of our own cup competition. Some things never change.

Swim in nostalgia via this link or roll back the years via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Dear new Dzeko owners,

As a repeat member of that club in the past, I know well the anticipation you must be feeling as your recent addition laces up this weekend and heads out onto the pitch to face some pretty dire opposition, since that is usually the only time one owns him.

However, if during or after his match he has somehow managed to disappoint you, by say missing an open net or whiffing on the ball as it caroms oddly off his plant leg, please keep the whinging and complaining to a minimum. You took a shot and I applaud you for it, so those who are tempted to LOLA at you should not do so either, but ofttimes donkey does what donkeys do, so just roll with it.

    Good luck.

      Top post.

I predict a roller-coaster for Dzeko owners... first a low when Jovetic starts instead, but then a high when Dzeko gets subbed in with 20 mins left to score a late goal.

He's an awkward player, and he hasn't had the gametime to build up any form or fitness. That said, the guy is a natural goalscorer playing in a very creative team. The potential is there, but he's a long way off being a sure thing.

Yes you do. You're not Triggerlips. You don't have any credibility under your belt (i.e past season experience), and you just ramble on about math which you think makes sense but in fact it's all gibberish.

          1) Look at the fixtures
          2) Predict who will score the most pts of the two
          3) Transfer them in

That's it. There's no magic formula like I need 0.25pts per 20 mins etc or whatever you wrote...

Are you two years old? all I'm saying is you claim to use "sound facts and information" but all I saw was someone trying to analyze FPL through some type of math equation, which it's not.

How is points-per-game-per-million some sort of complex math equation? Its very simple and basic calculations.

FYI, that was the first time I've ever posted calculations like that, and I probably won't do it again as I do agree that its kind of useless in the main, but it seems like you're criticizing me for actually having an analytical approach to "everything".

Personally I think some analytics is a welcome introduction to this forum, where 99% of the posts are AvsB questions, RMT's, or just general panic attacks about price changes.

Hey there. I'm just reading this thread and not to put words in anyone's mouths, but you might both be right. The points per million analysis is an interesting topic, so I applaud you for exploring, but at some point the nature of this game and the fact that we have to spend the money means that the spending becomes more inefficient the more expensive the players get, so no equation will be able to help figure out how to spend it all. Just a thought.

Thanks, great points. I agree with you, the value naturally gets smaller and smaller the more expensive you go, but you've got to put your money somewhere no matter how small the gains are. I enjoy playing around with stats and taking different views on things, even if some of my analysis is somewhat up in the air.

        • 11 Years
        11 years, 7 days ago

I'm not sure. I don't normally even consider them but they are a rough guide, and the projections look fairly decent as far as I can tell. The result was pretty conclusive too imo

Which all relies on RMT projections. Nice enough as a guide, but shouldn't be used as if it's some tool of mathematical precision. Attempting to gauge the value is also a fool's errand, you'll waste your life away on that stuff and to no avail. Pick the move you think will score more points in the next few weeks, then do the same again when you have more transfers to make.

A historical analysis of Man City CS's and what it means for FPL:

Historical stats always need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but considering that City's defense has been largely intact for several seasons (i.e. Hart, Zaba, Kompany, Clichy, Kolarov have been there for years now) I think there is some validity in looking at historical data in this case.

Here is a breakdown of their CS's, sorted by home/away:

    2011/12
Home (11): SWA WIG EVE ARS STO LIV FUL BLA BOL WBA MUN
Away (6): bla wba wig avl wol new

    2012/13
Home (10): SUN SWA AVL REA STO FUL CHE NEW WIG WBA
Away (8): whm che wig ars qpr avl swa rea

    2013/14
Home (10): NEW HUL NOR TOT SWA CPL STO FUL AVL WHM
Away (6): sto new nor hul mun cpl

    2014/15
    Home (2): MUN EVE
    Away (3): new avl sot

As you can see, City have been very consistent in tending to get around 10 CS's at home every season. However, they have only got 2 so far this season, which can be explained by looking at the tough home fixtures so far this season:
    - LIV STO CHE TOT MUN SWA EVE

On the bright side, their remaining home games look very promising and ripe for CS's:
    - CPL BUR SUN ARS HUL NEW LEI WBA WHM AVL QPR SOT

With that in mind, I would suggest that having (at least) 1 City defender could be essential going forwards, and I turn my attention to Joe Hart:

    1. Despite the relative lack of CS's, Hart is still ranked 3rd among all GK's, and could very well become the bona-fide No.1 FPL choice for the run-in as the CS's rack up.
    2. Note that he picked up save points in most of the tough fixtures too (LIV ars TOTx2 qpr sot), and only got less than 2pts once.
    3. At 6.0 he is the cheapest (nailed-on) way into the City defense (Zaba&Kompany cost 6.4m), and could well be worth the extra 0.5-1.0m outlay on GK given the abundance of good home fixtures.

I would love to hear your thoughts, whether you agree/disagree, or just have general comments! 😀

They kept clean sheets against Stoke and Swansea in each of the 3 previous seasons at home, but not this season . Maybe they just aren't as solid at the back this season?

Stoke are a different beast this season, much more of an attacking threat than in previous seasons. Swansea are arguably better with Siggy too.

Look at those home fixtures they've had... its pretty obvious that they aren't just less solid

Swansea are far less attacking away from home this season and Stoke have failed to score in 4 games this season against the likes of Leicester and Liverpool. I wouldn't be surprised to see them concede goals when you least expect it

Dzeko (and then Aguero), Yaya/Silva/Nasri and Zaba/Kompany looks so much appealing…for that run of fixtures.

I can't see myself ever wanting more than Aguero+Yaya in the outfield positions.

And besides, I can reassess that at the Jan WC when Aguero is back 🙂

So you are getting Hart for Fabnsky?

          What to do with Krull-Elliot?!
Wich one is supposed to be back early?

Not sure. I've got Fab-Elliot and the two options im considering are Fab>Hart or Elliot>Panti and rotating. I'd probably suggest that you do Krul>Hart as otherwise you'll have 0.5 locked into Krul until the Jan WC I think, and Hart is the best single GK choice. I'm leaning that way myself as well

Nice post. I think Hart is the far and away best choice for those with the non-playing keeper conundrum with all these injuries. I still wouldn't touch any of their defenders due to concerns over rotation. Putting those home games they have had into context - wow were those tough. Can't wait to load up on City players with my January wildcard 🙂

        Cheers.

I don't think he's that far and away the best though, since Fab-Panti would be a great rotation 0.5 cheaper. But Hart is certainly a great pick too

I'm saying as a route into their defense right now. I would prefer to make just the one swap to him over getting one of their defenders. On WC is a whole different ball of wax.

Yeah, he's definitely the best way into that defense right now. Leaning towards him now as I have money to spend and am rather tired of rotating gk's

West Brom and Villa rotate home and away.

If you'd picked Guzan and Foster from the start, playing whoever was at home every week, it would have got you 37 points so far.

If you'd played the one with the away fixture each week, however, it would have got you 69 points so far.

It would be cool to see some data around whether there are home/away splits for different quality teams, like the top clubs are tighter at home, or the weaker ones park the bus away. I wonder if the data actually support these narratives or not.

      1. Ludo
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 7 days ago

I think it would very difficult to prove/disprove. On a club by club basis though, I think you could find data to support it. Would depend a lot on the manager - Mourinho dominating games against weaker sides at home, and keeping things tight away to big clubs for example, but then conceding more away to smaller teams. Alan Irvine's West Brom seem to be a side that go for it at home, but shut up shop away, for example, if you have a look at their results.

Good points, plus figuring out what constitutes a stringer or weaker team would be quite subjective at best unless you analyzed every gameweek based on the records of the teams at that time. I like the idea of focusing on managers as much as teams.

RCA, Christina, and Rickardinho walk into a bar. They decide to make fun of Triggerlips, who is sitting in the corner.

RCA goes up to TL and says "your team is crap" Triggerlips calmly sips on his pint.

Christina goes up to TL and says "your blog sucks" Triggerlips nods his head, as he continues to sip on his pint.

Rickardinho goes up to him and says "I love you" Triggerlips nods and says:

"Everybody loves me" and walks out of the bar.

iirc there were in fact actually only 5 or 6 teams that were identical to his, hardly as if the entire internet was stalking him as he'd make out to be the case

Ah ok. Its kind of inevitable though really if you've got someone highly ranked posting his team like he was doing. I don't think there's any point to playing this game if you're just gonna copy someone else, but I suppose there's people in money leagues and ML's that want to do well but don't have the time to play seriously. Or complete nutjobs lol

Nice joke. Let me just be clear about something though - I didn't start any of this. I made a post yesterday about Pantilimon vs Hart, where I credited TL with the Panti idea, whereupon he started to attack me...

So, TL walks into a bar, where Rickardinho, RCA, Christina, etc are sitting....

Cheapest first choice keeper in the game, also with the highest PPG, and the best fixtures from now until the New Year. And people are talking about who's idea it was to get him in. Only on FFS...

This is my 3rd full season playing FPL. The 1st season I ended around place 166k, last year 15k and this year I was hoping to reach top 10k but for the last 6 gw's I remain around 15k. Does any1 have some advice on how to reach top 10k? What seperates top 10k players from the rest?

making the unpopular decisions. Like ridding of Baines before his last 3 games, or selling Costa for Bony 3 weeks ago, selling Southampton at the start of the tough fixtures.

Its a long term move tbh. Looking at next 4 to 5 weeks. A counter argument could be eating another week for free but every move we make is worth the same price right now. Eventually I'd have to do so en thing for a hit which I'd be doing for free if I got baines this week

    Today's pressers:

    Everton - 12.15
    Chelsea - 12.30
    Man City - 12.45

Things we learnt today so far:

    - Striker Sam Vokes is still not ready to be considered for Burnley against Southampton at Turf Moor.

    - Centre-back Michael Duff looks set to miss a fourth game with his calf problem while Stephen Ward (ankle) and Matt Taylor (Achilles) are still sidelined.

    - West Bromwich Albion duo Stephane Sessegnon and Youssuf Mulumbu have both shaken off knocks and are fit for Saturday's local derby with Aston Villa at The Hawthorns

    - Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney could return to the starting line-up having recovered from a calf injury.

    - Midfielder Jason Puncheon will be assessed after missing training on Thursday through illness while Joe Ledley (hip) and Adrian Mariappa (knee) are both ruled out

Southampton expect to have midfielder Toby Alderweireld back from a hamstring for tomorrow's match at Burnley and James Ward-Prowse is also set to be in the squad after resuming full training following two months out with an ankle problem.

    - Morgan Schneiderlin misses out with a groin injury, while forward Jay Rodriguez has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a knee problem.

    - Wenger adds that Alexi Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck are "fit and rested" and Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Flamini are also available.
