Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

The words kolorov and good idea should never be used in the same sentence unless there is an appropriate negative to qualify it.

For example getting kolorov is NOT a good idea but at some stage in the season you are going to do it anyway

I wouldn't get clichy either. Too much rotation in Man city fbs for their price tags.

Baines is a serious differential right now (I think his 18% ownership is largely Dead Teams) and I like his fixture this week. Congrats for that.

Looks like you already have a very decent plan. Go with your guts man, I'll be supporting you 😉 . Yep, I agree. I'm contemplating getting Silva for a hit now!

Baines is a serious waste of funds mate, even he racks in the odd assist, the money isn't worth it. Austin I'd consider fo the DGW, he's been poor as of late and there are better options at the price right now. Ayoze is unneeded unless you're planning on benching him and /or using him for the Gw27 blank as cover.

Carroll has to go ASAP, poor option right now and can't see him scoring any time soon mate.

Not before DGW28 wince I think 2 FTs (and possibly a hit) can get me the right DGW players. All depending on CHE's DGW though.

Nice Grav. I think the DGW scenario is a good idea for the WC. That way, you can load up on the approach, perhaps over a few GWs, and then have complete freedom to shape your team the way you want it afterwards.

        • 12 Years

This idea I mention would involve using the WC after the DGW so that you can swap out any players you want to. Not sure I made that clear.

I'm thinkin' bout swappin' out Sanchez for Silva. It's tempting, at least. I wouldn't drop him (Silva) for any other middie at this point with the home match against Hull. Would find another way to try to get Sterling in. That being said, Liverpool's fixtures get a bit tough here, so I am not sure about getting Sterling right away. He could easily do well though.

That hair is money indeed. Plus, he did play well. I think he was a pretty good signing for Liverpool. Lallana could be coming around too, and while I'm not a huge fan of Markovic, he's pretty decent overall. I think the worst signing for Liverpool this season, besides Balotelli, was Manquillo. Have not been impressed by him in the least bit.

From what I've seen, he has been terrible. But, I haven't exactly seen all of his performances, and it's tough when watching TV to truly get a feel for a player's all around performance in terms of movement and such. I'll take your opinion and consider it when I see him next. Maybe I missed some of his sparkier moments. Or all of them. 🙂

Thinking about transferring out Hazard to Downing the week before the double gw, Downing has CPL home and Hazard blanks , would be benching Hazard the next gw for the double anyway (whu) * all other front 8 would have better fixtures

E - allows you to pre-empt and deal with the upcoming Chelsea blank early. Having said that, you would probably prefer to have Oscar away at Aston Villa than Sterling away in the Merseyside derby...
Maybe leave this week and shift next GW?

Current plan was to go with 3 CHE & Kane and then ditch one (Oscar) in GW27 and bench the other 3.

Oscar's fixtures in the next 3 are superb, and with Fabs looking a doubt and Cuadrado threatening Willian's gametime, I think Oscar will be on all free kicks and corners.

All the more reason to hold Oscar, in that case. I think Oscar's returns may begin to decline once the UCL knockout phase commences... but until then, I think Oscar(31% ownership).

Great overall rank, by the way!

God, I am really considering him too. I mean, if he plays a good amount, it's too good to pass up. He brings offensive threat along with his defensive talents.........ugggghhhhh......it's like taking candy from a baby if Mourinho favors him over Cahill.....which everyone seems to think he should. But, as I have experienced all too often with situations such as these, just when you put him on your FPL team, Cahill will come back in and have a great game and thus reclaim his spot. In the long run, I would say it's worth the punt.

        Hazard(vc) Sterling Cazorla A.Johnson
        Aguero(c) Giroud Kane
        Pantilimon Boyd PvA Baird

1FT | £3.2m in bank (cash kept for Cazorla > Sanchez upgrade)

Should spare cash be used elsewhere?

Worked nicely last week. Tough one especially as I have Boyd as an option if sanchez doesn't olay either.

If I start PVA, Baird will come off the bench to replace Sanchez in my team, not a bad option..

Ok let me repost my analysis on why Sanchez has to go this week.

        What do I do?

        Foster/Panti
        PvA/Wisdom/Terry/Wasil/Bertrand
        Sanchez/Downing/Hazard/ADM/Albrighton
        Giroud/Aguero/Kane

1 FT. 2.6 ITB. Which option is better?

        A) Downing + Berty -----> Silva + 5.1 (-4)
        B) Downing -----------------> Sterling

        Cheers 😀

Don't you think that Sterling has bad fixtures though? Silva has HULL at home

Already no what you think 😉

Still not convinced though. Look at Liverpools fixtures.

              Haha.

I see your point, but you'd still expect them to score in most, if not all of them.

Liverpool playing amazingly and Sterling himself in good form.

              Form > fixtures

But in that case you would pick Silva who is in better form and has better fixtures?

I've never rated Silva as an FPL option. I had him when City were using the false 9 system, which suited him, and he was in good form then. With a recognised striker, I feel as though he is never a consistent FPL option (just look at earlier in the season). With two (even one) striker there is less space for him to weave his magic in the box, and he reverts back to that 'assist the assister' type player.

Certainly not in better form than Sterling.

Exactly, I forgot to mention that too.

Eh, for me, the decision is fairly straight forward.

IMO I would transfer Bertrand this GW as his value will drop...Downing at home to Man U isn't too bad a fixture this GW too. You could switch him next GW then

Is Coutinho a suitable alternative to Sterling? Is Nasri a good alternative to YaYa?

I'd say double no on that one. Although, Coutinho is finding himself in a pretty little purple patch right now. Long run, still no for me, however.

Repost from bottom of last page...

        Who to start?
        Panti (swa) or foster (bur)
        Pva (swa) or Baird(bur)

Baird likely won't start anyway but even more unlikely come off the bench.

        Forster
        Terry - Clichy - PVA
        Hazard - Silva - Cazora - Sterling
        Aguero - Kane - Giroud

        Bench: Hamer - P Jones - Baird - Chadli

        Questions:

        - PVA or P Jones?
        - Sterling or Chadli?
