Following the earlier addition of former Manchester City duo Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair, Aston Villa made Idrissa Gueye their third new signing of the summer, with the midfielder joining from Lille for a fee believed to be in the region of £9 million. The Senegal international has penned a four-year contract at Villa Park.

After securing the 25-year-old’s signature, Villa boss Tim Sherwood explained he is looking to get the most out of the versatile Gueye’s attacking potential in the season ahead:

“Idrissa is a good acquisition to the squad. He has the same energy as Fabian Delph. He’s similar to Ramires. He can play flexible as well – as a No 6 in a sitting midfield role or as a No 8 box to box. Idrissa can do both of them. He wants to get the shackles off really and get box to box. That’s what he’s looking to do and we’re happy for him to do that. He wanted to come to the Premier League. He had a few options but we were delighted he decided to join us.”

THE HISTORY

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, with the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye starring for the French outfit.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, before becoming a key player during the past two seasons.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered two assists, triggering reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011 and has since racked up 23 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to open his account for his country. He started all three matches in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

THE PROSPECTS

With Fabian Delph now departed after his dramatic U-turn and last season’s loanee Tom Cleverley moving to Everton, Sherwood desperately needs to bolster his options in the centre of the park.

Gueye certainly looks an assured starter for the Villains, either in a two or three-man central midfield. Sherwood has recently utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 formations in pre-season and the latter system could see Gueye partnered by Ashley Westwood or Carlos Sanchez, with all three likely to start in a 4-3-3 unless their manager strengthens his midfield options further.

Utilised in a 4-1-2-1-2 set-up at Lille last term, the new boy averaged an effort every 78.1 minutes – granted, that’s hardly spectacular, but, as we saw upon his arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood’s attacking approach should boost his players’ prospects in the final third. Three of Delph’s four assists for the season and all three of Cleverley’s goals were produced under the new manager from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Compared to France legend Jean Tigana by former Senegal head coach Alan Giresse, Guyeye’s ball-winning ability will also be vital for Villa – he made a total of 100 tackles in Ligue 1 last season.

Costing 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Gueye will set you back the same price as wingers Scott Sinclair and Charles N’Zogbia, who will be competing for the wide positions along with the 5.5-priced Jack Grealish if Sherwood opts for a front three. Grealish’s recent injury absence has allowed Sinclair the chance to stake a claim for a starting berth, whilst Christian Benteke’s departure could even see the former Swansea man handed spot-kicks. Clearly, at that price, he could be an ideal fifth midfielder if he can convince Sherwood he’s worthy of a regular role, though there are still some question marks over Sinclair’s minutes once Sherwood has a fully fit squad. Westwood is the cheapest Villa midfielder at 4.5, and looks fairly assured of starts – despite a deep-lying role, he does have some set-piece duties in the locker, which has helped him rack up ten assists over the last three seasons.

With Delph, Benteke and Ron Vlaar all gone, though, Sherwood’s next few acquisition will go some way to determining our opinions on the Midlands outfit for the season ahead. Certainly, the Villa boss will set up his team to play with the handbrake off and Gueye may well arrive on our radars if he benefits in the same way as Delph and Cleverley prospered in the latter stages of the previous campaign.

Looking at the schedule, Villa’s opening schedule is very favourable, with the home clash against Man United in Gameweek 2 the only difficult fixture in the first six weeks of the season (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA). That should provide us with the ideal opportunity to see how Gueye adapts to English football, though with Grealish just 0.5 dearer, the former Lille man has some way to go to establish himself as the most viable pick amongst Sherwood’s midfield charges.

hey guys, would like to hear your thoughts. At first I went with Ritchie and 2.5 in a bank. But then gave it a second thought, and decided to use all the money. I don't see an urgent need to get Aguero or Sanchez on GW2 and on GW3 if needed I will do that with 2 transfers. So need to fill in the midfield slot.
3 options I am considering - a)City(Sterling/Yaya) - have no City coverage at all.
    b) doubling United(have Rooney)
    c) doubling Arsenal(have Ozil at the moment.

    thanks

Myhill signed a new contract so I reckon there was no hope they could offer Hennessey first team football. (With good reason, lunacy to replace Myhill with him)

All fine and dandy on a national level, but at a club level Myhill has showed he can be a great keeper for West Brom. Not sure why a keeper who played for a dire Wolves side once upon a time in the PL is an upgrade.

This is true, and I reckon Hennessey wanted first team football. Unless there might be a decent keeper in the youth team/reserves worth promoting, they could do with buying someone.

    Butland Hennessey
    Azpi Shaw Mings Huth O'Shea

Afternoon guys, I would be grateful for comments on my first ever RMT. It features one absolute punt but reasonably happy with the rest of the side. Planning to downgrade Hazard to Fabregas in order to afford Aguero when he's fit.

    Ruddy/Butland rotation

    Azpi // Darmian // Colccini/Kaboul rotation

Ozil // Hazard // McManaman (punt) // Henderson

    Rooney // Costa // Pelle

To add to my other post (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/27/scout-report-idrissa-gueye/?hc_page=3#hc_comment_10617510), if you do a calculation on goals x 5 points and assists x 3 points and figure out the amount of minutes per point you get this top 25:

    Silva - 27.6mins per point
    Sánchez - 28.3mins per point
    Mané - 31.8mins per point
Di María - 32.2mins per point
    Chadli - 33mins per point
    Hazard - 33.7mins per point
    Adam - 34.3mins per point
    Milner - 35.7mins per point
    Oscar - 37.4mins per point
    Fàbregas - 40mins per point
    Mata - 40.4mins per point

Goals are worth far more than 5pts due to BP's...
Typical for a goal scorer to add 'around' 2pts per goal.

Never going to get 100% with these calculations, just a rough estimate to try analysis multiple players outputs.

Nice work. It's interesting to see how bonus and CS really help some of these guys.

That's better mate. Again, though, I think there is an argument for goals being 6 due to the extra bonus but that's certainly food for thought. Cheers.

    Prediction for this season

    Man Utd
    Chelsea
    Man City
    Arsenal
    Spurs
    Liverpool

Don't think United have the squad to challenge this year yet, especially now they have Champions League as well.. Top 3 the same as last season in a different order I think.

      Man Utd
      Southampton

      Chelsea
      Arsenal
      Utd
City (assuming Aguero injured for circa 2 months)
      Liverpool
      Spurs

I do like ManU's midfield, but I'd still take Arsenal's midfield. And Chelsea have the Jose defence factor. I hope it's a really closely fought title race, with three teams involved in the closing weeks.

Anyone else thinking of going with Shaw? By all accounts has had a really promising pre season and offers good attacking threat.

I thought LVG spent last preseason going on about how fat & out of shape Luke Shaw was? Havne't heard any similar criticism this time around 🙂

Yes - nailed on, forward thinking and United have a better protective shield now and may keep De Gea yet.Injury only real worry. Would prefer Darman ideally but Valencia messes that up...

I think Rojo and Blind's potential to play LB messes up Shaw's attraction, much more than Valencia towards Darmian.

As a utd fan I'd love to have him in my 11 but alas, cannae afford. He's got great potential upside though, could easily be as productive going forward as Seamus Coleman if he could jsut find his form & fitness.

    Newish crowd - thoughts please?

Ruddy - Rudd (or Myhill - Hennessy)
    Ivanovic - Kosc - Huth - Francis - Prödl
    Hazard - Ozil - Sterling - Ritchie - 4.5
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

Could do Sterling to Walcott, or Kosc to Skrtel and Ozil to Walcott. Rest is pretty settled for me

If Brady comes in at 5m mid for Norwich would he be the perfect 5th mid? Maybe even 4th seeing as he will be in set pieces

He'd be straight into my 11 (in place of Albrighton)
I think you need a couple of really cheap starters, possible even 3 (4.5 defs included) & Robbie Brady would fit the bill perfectly.
Betcha they'll price him at 5.5 though & he'll be just out of reach 🙁

P.S. he'll def start, right? I suppose he was so injury prone last year there's no guarantees over his fitness this year so maybe albrighton is still a good bet for the season start

At a transfer of 7m you bet your ass he'll start, might turn into the Brady of old (start if first season in bpl before he got injured) fpl gold if priced at 5m

    A) Ivan + Cedric

    or

    B) Azpili + Kos

    ?

I'm leaning towards B at the moment - with Filipe Luis looking like he's on the way out Azpili may be more of a regular starter. Thoughts?

Was really invested in De Jong last year and obviously it wasn't to be. Back and scoring in training is he worth the risk this season?
