Following the permanent arrival of Sebastian Coates earlier in the transfer window, Younes Kaboul became the second centre-back signing for Sunderland this summer. The France international expressed his eagerness to work under Dick Advocaat while praising the Black Cats’ team spirit during their relegation scrap:

“He is a great manager and from what I saw last season I was really impressed by everyone at the club, at Arsenal it was really emotional but that is football – you cannot control it and what the lads did was amazing. Team spirit is the most important thing because it is what makes everything happen.”

The History

Born in Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, France, Kaboul cut his teeth at a trio of amateur clubs, before making the switch to Auxerre in 2000. After four years learning his trade in the youth set-up, the six-foot-four-inch centre-back earned his first league start for the Burgundy club in November 2004. He went on to make a further 11 starts that campaign but could only muster nine in the 2005/06 Ligue 1 term. Kaboul eventually cemented a starting berth the following season, tallying two goals and one assist across 31 appearances.

Tottenham Hotspur then came calling, landing the robust centre-back in an £8 million deal. Although injuries limited his involvement at the turn of the year, Kaboul displayed an attacking edge in the 2007/08 Premier League season, chalking up three goals and one assist across 21 outings. After just one year at White Hart Lane, Kaboul signed for Portsmouth in the summer of 2008.

In his two seasons with the south coast outfit, Kaboul notched four goals and one assist in 50 appearances while being deployed in a variety of positions (centre-back, right-back, defensive midfield) under three separate managers. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp then sought to re-sign the Frenchman, resulting in his return to north London in January 2010.

Kaboul spent the remainder of the 2009/10 season at right-back for Tottenham, before earning starts at both centre-back and right-back the following term. He enjoyed a relatively injury-free 2011/12 campaign and established himself as a mainstay in central defence, bagging one goal and one assist in 33 appearances, before a spate of injuries restricted him to just 12 outings over the next two years. Kaboul started the first 11 fixtures of 2014/15 but fell out of favour with manager Mauricio Pochettino thereafter, making the squad on just four occasions from Gameweek 12.

Having captained France at every stage of the youth system, Kaboul was afforded his first senior cap for Les Bleus in 2011, scoring on his debut friendly against Ukraine. He has since gone on to card three more starts for France, with his last appearances arriving in October 2011.

The Prospects

Kaboul’s addition, allied with Coates’ arrival, swells the number of options in the heart of Sunderland’s defence for the season ahead. The Black Cats managed 13 clean sheets last year – the same number as Arsenal – but with John O’Shea and Wes Brown also in contention, there’s a great deal of uncertainty over Advocaat’s likely starters.

Speaking to the local press, club skipper O’Shea conceded that Advocaat has a real dilemma on his hands:

“There’s a lot of competition in defence now and that’s what we’re looking for throughout the whole team. That’s how you get success. I’ve had that practically all my career and that’s how teams get better. You need people constantly fighting for places and fighting to stay in that XI. Hopefully that’s how we get better results. It’s a manager’s dream.”

For Fantasy managers, though, it’s a real source of frustration, given that all four centre-halves come in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. In addition, the arrival of Adam Matthews (4.5) places uncertainty over the right-back berth, with the summer signing from Celtic set to vie with Billy Jones (also 4.5) for a starting role. Ultimately, this leaves us approaching the start of the season with only Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt – at 5.0 apiece – looking nailed-on for the Wearside outfit.

Certainly, the changes in the BPS will favour Pantilimon – and given that the Romanian averaged 4.4 points per appearance last season, he could well justify the extra outlay. Van Aanholt, meanwhile, tallied five assists in 2,307 minutes last term, with only Leighton Baines (nine) and Daryl Janmaat (six) besting that haul amongst defenders, whilst he also fashioned 17 more shots (30) than any other Black Cats backline option in 2014/15.

Given that they managed more shut-outs away than at home (seven to six), Sunderland are clearly capable of tightening up on their travels – indeed, only Liverpool and West Brom (eight apiece) managed more clean sheets on the road. Looking at the schedule, Sunderland’s kind opening batch of fixtures (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou) is certainly conducive to defensive returns; indeed, Advocaat’s men face just three of last year’s top seven in the first 14 Gameweeks.

Sunderland, however, only have two more friendlies before the campaign kicks-off and bearing in mind that Kaboul and Coates have yet to feature (though both are expected to play some part against Doncaster tomorrow night), it remains to be seen whether either will be fully match fit come their season opener at Leicester a week on Saturday. It may well be, then, that we won’t know Advocaat’s preferred options until a few matches into the new campaign, when all his defenders will be up to scratch.

If you can have only one: Mane or Pelle?

Both at same price. Mane the main man whereas Pelle showing very good pre season form.

Pre-season is a factor, it's just the fact that he's nailed on, has good fixtures and no other strikers in that price bracket really appeal to me. Mane got me hattrick last year so it's hard to pick Pelle!

      Pelle.

This could largely be a carry over from last season though as Pelle was excellent while I had him, whereas I never really 100% got the Mane love.

Also, I see fewer options with Pelle's price bracket up front, whereas I have a glut of 8.5/9m mids in my team already.

      1. Zombie

Are you not worried that he will occupy 1 of your three striker spot?

Also, it's unlikely that some mid from 6-6.5 range will match Mane whereas Sakho/Berahino/Gomis can easily match Pelle (making Pelle more expendable). Also, Giroud/Benteke can match him easily

I like them both but just playing devils advocate

With Austin as the exception who didn't hit form for a while. Chasing the budget striker was a nightmare at the start of last season.

Naismith, Sakho, Ulloa, Berahino etc. You never knew where the lightning would strike.

I still think Pelle will score more overall but not by much just like last season. Mane is potentially more 'explosive' but I want a striker that ticks over goals. Not a mid that blanks a few weeks then gets a mega haul

I have chosen him as a good option at that price, I don't think Tekkers will hit the ground running and I've got ARS covered so Giroud is not an option.

He also is a little cheaper than those other two so I've got 1m in my Aguero piggy bank.

I like Ruddy but Panti could be a monster this year and Norwich's back 4 is a bit more certain than Sunderland's

Will need to shave off 2.0 M from either Walcott/Ramsay/Mane/Rooney > not sure which yet. It is difficult to say at this point, the most important thing is that you have flexibility and can get to him with max 4pt hit.

      Evening all,

First RMT post, put hours into this so would appreciate any feedback 😀

My thinking is all about the first 5-6 gameweeks to be honest and no further; I've never held out using my WC beyond then.

I have 1.0 ITB, my plan is to do Wilson > Sakho in GW 2, then save 2 FT for GW 4 at which point I can evaluate getting Kun.

Never plan a GW2 transfer. If you want Sakho have him from the start. The Aguero plan looks good and the midfield is particularly strong. It is a good team but planning GW2 transfers is a risky game that almost never pays off

Know what you mean... GW1 is so random that there'll almost certainly be other priorities than Sakho come GW2. Cheers for the feedback.

Nice team. I reckon its better to start with Sakho so then you have a transfer to adapt. No Chelsea defence is a bit of risk and Jones is a rotation risk. Also not too keen on Hoolahan

O'Shea is a gonna in my opinion.

        He's rubbish
        He's old.
        He was crap last season.
Coates was played by Dick and bought by Dick after the loan.

Why? Cos he swe O'Shea and thought 'O'S**t'

Not sure yet. My thinking goes like; Milner might be more defensive, but also good on set pieces, free kicks. Henderson on penalties if Benteke doesn't take them which I don't think he will. Sterling not there so maybe less penalties, does Benteke ever go down? Henderson more certain to play every second.

      Hi folks, start of the FPL season is closing in and I think I've just about got my final draft sorted;

      Myhill/ Pantillimon,

      Huth/ Azpil/ Francis/ Kosci/ S. Taylor

      Ritchie/ Cazorla/ Hazard/ Mata/ Hendo

      Defoe/ Pelle/ Rooney

Any thoughts or improvements I could make to this?
      Thanks in advance!

Nice defence and midfield. Though I personally would get Foster for Brom, so you don't have to make the transfer from Panti. Myhill will either keep clean sheets or make a lot of save points anyway under Tony Pulis.

I like the idea of Sakho as a punt, in place of Pelle to save money, but that's up to you. Also, Defoe to Deeney no did you're looking good :]

What are the prices everybody has spent into each section of their team? Mine seems a bit light up front, not worried but just curious what the average is:

      GK: £9.5
      DEF: £26.5
      MID: £41.5
      FW: £22.5

22.5 up front is really low mate.

Rooney, Sakho, Deeney - soon to become Aguero, Sakho, Deeney isnt too bad

        9.5
        24.5
        40.5
        25.5

        Imo best defensive option is

        6 - 6 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5

I think u can figure who the 6s are but save the two mil in defense and put it up top

          Currently have:

7 - 5.5 - 5 - 4.5 - 4.5 in defence, dont really want to downgrade ha but i do understand, its either to start with Ivan or not really.

Not too keen on any of the options up front in the £8+ range.

          But appreciate the advice!

Makes since personally I think there's is no right option but if sakho and deeney do well then ur midfield is great

Like all the rate my teams before the season starts lol, all 50:50 on speculation/hope lol. My previous team was more balanced price wise and very much like yours but couldnt fit in Hazard

          I think 6 - 6 - 5 - 4.5 - 4.5 may prove better, there is definitely value in the 5s

Agreed, Im struggling to fit all my options in my team, may have to leave out Soton because of it :O

I have left saints defence out at the moment, choosing the right one is proving a problem, I don't think Fonte is worth 5.5, despite being nailed on, and the other one I would go for, Cedric, is apparently a yellow card magnet.

In the end, I have opted out, it gives me one less headache to worry about

Yeh definately my thoughts exactly, was gna go for Targett but i know i will be screwed over very early lol. Did toy around with getting in their goalie but again minefield lol

Wow seems pretty balanced, not gna invest the extra money into a player and then place hold until Aguero?

It does seem that maybe my defence is a tad too much lol

Aguero is in my draft squad.

27.5 up top is as follows

              Aguero 13.0
              Pelle 8.0
              Sakho 6.5

I have the 1.5 left in the bank, maybe to upgrade a midfield player, or to upgrade Pelle/Sakho after their fixtures take a turn for the worse

Wow, impressed with the front then! Most teams with Aguero have been pretty light up front. Is this a Hazard-less team? Not going for Mane over Pelle then?

Yeah, no hazard in at the moment, however, I still have Fabregas in

I have Mane too, I think my punt will not be an unknown player, but two players from Saints taking a good strong run of fixtures. I remember Pelle last year banging them in for fun, and with Mane's fantasy ability I think it could work well for the first 5/6/7/8 weeks

Is that Costa/Rooney/Pelle up front? Your defence is only £2.5 less than mine, i assume all funds have gone up front?

            No, it's Aguero - Rooney - Adebayor

My starting defenders are Clyne - Koscielny - Huth

I have what I would class as a 'strong 11' and bench fodder of 3x £4m and 1x £4.5m. Hoping to find some starting £4m defenders, currently on Saylor and Target short term.

Waiting to see if Aguero looks likely to play any minutes first game week, if not I would keep the funds in the bank to get him on GW2 and start with Kane I reckon.

Adebayor based on if he goes to Villa i take it?

Are you not worried about having so many non playing players? Even having Targett in my team would worry me in case any main defender gets injured, unless this is purely short term and your planning on WCing early. Kane is a surprisingly underrated option, would get him in if i could shift enough funds!

Yeah definitely... no move, no Ade haha. The two players I had earmarked for that £6m role was him and Rickie Lambert (both proven and both likely to move)

Yeah it's a concern but it's a risk I'm prepared to initially take to maximise my starting 11. My first 11 are pretty nailed on and my £4.5m mid (currently Wanyama) will come in and replace anyone other than my 3 defenders

I'm open minded about wild carding... I'll definitely save it if I can, but if something went wrong (non-playing bench like you mentioned) then I wouldn't be afraid to use it early and try to maximise team value for a better long term squad (in theory)

        GK: 9.0
        DEF: 26.0
MID: 37 / 39 (with / without Kun on squad)
        FW: 27.5 / 25.5 (with / without Kun)

My team includes Aguero. If it is determined on, like, Aug 7 that he is out or still iffy, I will move Kun to Costa and then shift the 2M to mids which would change my asset allocation a tad.

Ive been telling myself that Aguero isnt worth it until at least GW3 so havent even thought of having a team where he starts, i'd definately have to break it in a few bits.

If he is fit are you 100% set on getting him in vs WBA/CHE/EVE? Surely the damage would be fine to wait until Watford?

Are Sunderland's fixtures good enough to double on for say the first 7-8 weeks? (defence of course).

Personally, I regard that as lunacy. But ... many here disagree.

But there is a lot of madness here, too ...
