The first Gameweek of any season is always the most interesting (perhaps excluding double Gameweeks and Gameweek 38); we carry out months of planning and carry out much more research than for any other Gameweek to ensure that our teams are perfectly balanced and organised, only to see the best laid plans seemingly collapse as your new left-back doesn’t start or your new striker fluffs his lines.

With our Watchlists being so drastically changed after this week’s matches and the average points so low (I scored only 29!), this got me thinking: does your team suddenly become bad after a disappointing first week, and should you take action or be patient and trust in your detailed research and your picks?

Action

The reorganisation of the Fantasy Football Scout Watchlist certainly points towards taking decisive action, with Branislav Ivanovic crashing to the bottom of the defender list, Jordan Henderson falling off altogether and Mesut Ozil dropping down the midfielder list while Wayne Rooney slips down on the forwards list.

Does this suggest that they have suddenly become bad picks after one Gameweek? No, of course not, but previous seasons have shown that there are certain bandwagons you cannot miss and need to get on as soon as you can: Aaron Ramsey’s breakout season, when he was priced at 5.5 certainly springs to mind, as did Sergio Aguero’s return to the side last year. If you miss these at an early stage, you can be playing catch-up all season.

Undoubtedly, if any of your punts for Gameweek 1 have not paid off (e.g. they were dropped from the squad) then it certainly makes sense to get rid and bring in someone who has impressed already. As will be important for the season as a whole, there is no point keeping someone who doesn’t play.

There is also the experience of watching players from a newly promoted team that you have backed but have failed to impress, which certainly starts to make your trigger finger itchy. In this situation, giving them another week or two may be sensible, though no one wants to hold onto worthless assets with a misplaced sense of hope, and resisting the switch to, for example, a Leicester midfielder like Riyad Mahrez is tough.

Patience

However, are there any bandwagons this year that merit ditching your first week picks for?

I would suggest not, and despite stand-out weeks from individuals such as Yaya Toure, Mahrez and Marc Albrighton, I don’t think we can conclusively state that they are “essential” and warrant major surgery to your team. At this stage, it’s just not clear that those players will outscore options such as the Arsenal midfielders or other cheap midfielders over the next few weeks, and you will have likely missed their “big” score if you get them in now. After all, Leicester won’t play Sunderland every week.

For the promoted teams, it probably is worth giving them a bit more time. Bournemouth in particular have incredible fixtures, and if you don’t have any of their players in now then realistically there is little point having them in at all. Watford did enough to merit holding for now, and whilst Norwich didn’t look great, again giving them another few weeks looks sensible.

The Fantasy Football Scout Watchlist also shows that there is merit in showing patience and holding; Cedric and Kane in particular stand out as having retained their lofty rankings despite only playing 45 minutes and blanking respectively.

Conclusion

So, is Gameweek 1 really all that different? As with many Gameweeks, it’s sensible to show patience if one of your good picks has a bad week, but it’s important to strike the balance between showing blind faith and having a knee-jerk that backfires spectacularly over the next few weeks. I certainly would not be advocating major surgery at this stage if you have picked a solid squad; remember, you chose those players for a reason that was more long term than just Gameweek 1.

I have many glaring errors in each department - Iva, Wally, Cesc, Rooney.

But I opt for patience this week.

They're not glaring errors, they just didn't score many points in 1 week. Each one of them has the potential to earn well over the first 4, 6, 10 weeks - that's why you picked them. Keep your head!

Agreed, they all look like decent picks. Walcott is obviously the biggest risk and probably needs to go if he doesn't start this weekend, but I wouldn't be thinking about getting rid of any of them yet

This ^. Big difference between a glaring error and one week's performance in a sport that has few goals with a large degree of random output of those goals.

It does in my view tho, I'll laid down my reasoning.

        Before the season start:

Ivanovic - I bought him because of his attacking returned and he is considered as one of early bloomer and of course based on Chelsea CS potential.

Wally - His point returned per minute was immense and I believe he should play regularly when I bought him in.

Cesc - Bought him as I don't fancy Hazard, cheaper route to Chelsea attacking prowess, under the impression of he will have all set-pieces duties, and his point returned in the first half of the season.

Rooney - I don't have another captain option in my squad, so I bought him for the sole purpose of being captain.

        After last week performance :

Ivanovic - I believe at 7.0 he's not worth it after that shamble performance against Swansea, add to that they gonna be without Courtois, 7.0 is really big considering Chelsea poor performance.

Wally - He IS rotation risk, can't afford to have one at 9.0.

Cesc - Oscar. That guy literally hogged all the set-piece and make my reasoning behind Cesc's set-pieces duties becomes void.

Rooney - I'm lucky to get that 'assist' last week, other than that he does nuff all. and I don't like what I'm seeing. Yikes.

But, after all that rant, I'm happy to keep them for another week. Looking forward toward this week, especially Cesc v City (might start in the hole and Oscar bench).

          Alternatively:

Ivanovic - first game rustiness for the whole back line, combined with his shots in the box and that Swansea are by no means just fodder for top teams. Begovic behind him may be a concern, but still plenty potential.

Walcott - ok, a rotation threat. But keep for this week at least as he's likely to play against Palace. Might be due a downgrade to Ozil/Cazorla/Ramsey if continued to be benched.

Rooney - that's a team still gelling. He's up front, involved in the goalmouth action (hence the assist) and will get goals long term. Still captain material if you've got no one else, especially with good opening fixtures of which Spurs is probably one of the trickiest.

Cesc - as you say, might be shifted in to the 10 role. Even if not, he's still got the chemistry with Hazard and Costa to do damage. Nothing has changed, even if Oscar has upped set pieces.

        Ha great minds...

I think you're right, the key is trying to work out whether the selection was a bad pick or not. I actually agree that Walcott is not a good pick as he won't start too often, and I'm relieved I bailed out of him on Friday for Ozil...

This may persuade me to hold fire on a hit. Good arguments both side.

Must say action has always done me proud in the past.

Last year I got Krul and Sigurdsson for a hit and both paid me back well.

Early hits to get Drogba and Malouda in gwk 2 in the past really helped as well.

I think the issue I have this year is that I still have doubts over all of the standout performers from week one, and I hadn't really been considering many of them for my squad. It's hard to then turn your back on the players that you brought in for week one...

Exactly. The only one to pique our interests should be Yaya Toure, but there's no way of knowing if he's going to keep going until we see City with some stiffer opposition and with Aguero starting matches.

Yeah, West Brom were so awfully poor this week that I'd hesitate to draw too many conclusions. It would have been a different situation too if Yaya's first goal had gone to Silva due to the deflection

"No, of course not, but previous seasons have shown that there are certain bandwagons you cannot miss and need to get on as soon as you can:"

Are Ayew and Payet players in the 'bandwagons you cannot miss' bracket?

I don't think so, and I think we need more time to monitor them - especially Payet, who got an assist from a free kick. I prefer (and have) Sakho at this point for West Ham coverage.

On Ayew, it's hard to know how the points will be spread out for Swansea considering Siggy, Gomis and Montero could all share the spoils

In my opinion, the only bandwagon not to miss will be Aguero from about GW4.

Last season's early bandwagons that had to be jumped on quickly included Costa and Siggy, but I don't see anything similar this season.

I think the one exception is Payet, he created most chances in all of Europe last season with exception of Messi I think. I've had Payet and Sakho from GW1

Good post mate, that is the problem. People think that they're players are terrible if they don't perform in the opening gameweek and end up chopping and changing. I'm sticking with the same team as I had last week and saving my free transfers for Aguero in gw4. I only got 35 points but I'm not panicking yet

Yeah I was surprised with a few of the changes on the Watchlist to be honest. I know Coutinho scored, but I didn't think that necessarily merits dropping Henderson from the list on the basis of just one match

I agree. They should have kept Henderson or Milner on the list as well as Coutinho.

Then we can make our own choices between them depending on whether we can afford the extra 1.0m for the more expensive player.

Ivan, Hazard, Walcott all causing me headaches
bricking it for having no agero or sanchez but going for Walcott captain this week?

what do we all think? I have
    Chadli,

    Pelle

but something makes me assume Walcott will play up front

True, and he was poor in the Community Shield. To be honest the strongest team is probably Giroud up top with Ozil, Ramsey, Sanchez behind and Coquelin and Cazorla further back, so I think we could get used to Theo on the bench. Remember last time he was fit for the season Arsenal didn't have Sanchez...

Walcott also the one giving me a headache. He's FPL gold really but not if the 9m is sat on the bench. Why does Wenger play Ox with Walcott on bench?

I'm giving it another week. With the City fixtures on the up, it might be time to double up and lose Walcott for the time being. He has to start at Palace for me to consider keeping him

Wally's defensive game is poor, not that Ox is much better, but still. Also Ox had a good pre-season so earned a place in the squad.

Can see AW choosing between Wally and Giroud up front depending on who they play.

For me, I have to remember:
    a) low average means my lowish score is ok, not a disaster worth ripping up my team for.
    b) weird results (Chelsea conceding 2, Arsenal blanking, WBA conceding 3 at home even if it was to City, Leicester 4 - 2 Sunderland...) which almost definitely won't be replicated as the season goes on means Indint have to rebuild my team to fit those freak results.
    c) odd-ones-out fixtures on GW1 means that now it's easier to see some teams' clear run of 3-4 good fixtures (e.g. Swansea, Spurs, Man U, West Ham) which you knew were there but were obscured by the looming difficult GW1 game. So I'm happy with Rooney, Fabianski, Gomis, etc.

I Took some hits and then eventually just decided to go all out and wildcard. I think I've been very inpatient, but I think I had made so many last minute changes, that my originally well thought out team turned into a bit of a mess.

Pretty happy now I've took some action. Team looks well, and it's a lot better planned out than it was originally.

The good thing about cheap punts is that they do allow you to get in some of the big hitters, while being more assured that the cheap players on their day can turn up. Payet, Mahrez & Oxford have allowed me to get Aguero, Sanchez & Hazard in, without nuking the whole team.

I'll probably regret it long term, but I can console myself in a nice lineup at least for one gameweek....

        Original Team

        Pantilimon / Rudd
        Cedric / Van Aanholt /Francais / Bassong / Prodl
        Henderson / Sinclair / Hazard / Mane / Ritchie
        Aguero / Rooney / Deeney

        New Team

        Butland / Mccarthy
        Jenkinson / Cedric / Francais / Oxford / Targett
        Hazard / Yaya / Sanchez / Payet / Mahrez
        Aguero / Gomis / Ighalo

Defintely some punts in there. I've also got a weak defence. But I had Yaya from the start and really regretted it. This team is definitely more exciting.

I may be inclined to agree... but only the next Gameweek will tell.

The main issue was that I felt in hindsight that Rooney, Van Aanholt & Pantilimon were expensive for what they offer.

I also like the 4.0 defenders, if they don't play everyweek it doesn't bother me, because I have reasonable faith in the other 3. But they are 4.0 defenders from potential top 8 teams which I think adds to their value.

The Wildcard always burns a hole in my pocket every year. I'm just not very good at saving it, I feel I can settle down and play the game a bit better with it gone. I know that's irrational, but we all play the game different.

Next time you are tempted to make a lot of transfers, why not plan them out on paper first and give yourself time to think about whether you really want to go ahead with all of them.

Better than hitting that transfer button prematurely for multiple hits and regretting it later.

If you've already taken a lot of hits this week, then converting them into a wildcard might be the best option - but try to be a bit more patient next time!

Good article Poodle, way too soon to draw too many conclusions from Wk1. I think there were certain factors, some of them obvious, others less so, that may account for both good and bad early performances. Many will have shaped their squads for the first few weeks with thoughts on bringing others into the fold. So it's perhaps more a matter of 'is my squad in good shape for next week?' than 'who should I dump/buy?'. If you can answer 'yes' to the 1st question then do nothing and you'll have 2 FT's come 18.46 Friday, a good chance of a solid score, options will be greater and your beer will taste so much better.
