Fantasy football proved a harsh taskmaster as the 2015/16 season kicked off in frustrating fashion. As well as looking back on Gameweek 1’s shocking results, our community writers and hot topic posters were full of advice on how to ensure Gameweek 2 revives our spirits. We also take a look at the similarities between poker and Fantasy football, examine the mysteries of price rises and falls and analyse of the best stats to emerge from the first round of fixtures. In addition, we find time to see who has taken in an early lead in the many community tournaments taking place this season.

The Community Articles

After the debacle of Gameweek 1, Pooodle provided a thought-provoking article weighing up the pros and cons of being patient or taking action, regarding the disappointing start to the season. For those looking to draft in last week’s star performers, Rodellegabomb was on hand to look at three of the biggest bandwagons.

Our resident poker expert Get In also popped in to show how decisions such as captaining Eden Hazard was still the logical move based on tried and tested gambling theory.

Our Rough with the Smooth article rounded up your tales of woe and also highlighted those who can afford a little smugness going into Gameweek 2.

Amongst the most radical steps Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers can take is to use a chip early on. DMHomag suggests using the Bench Boost chip during a single Gameweek could be wise, as saving it for a double Gameweek may be more troubled than its worth.

Finally, this week saw some of the first FPL price changes of the season, with Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez amongst the risers. For those unfamiliar with how the game’s transfer market works Diva was on hand to offer this beginners guide.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Whether hits or patience is planned the community was on hand to offer a raft of good advice in our hot topic on ensuring Gameweek 2 is full of cheer. Amongst those offering further advice on lessons to take from Gameweek 1, was the RMT Professor, who also showed that even the game’s all time best can be humbled by a poor start. Avoiding rash moves was the key message Sports Guy offered this week as the community continued to lick its wounds from Gameweek 1.

Players being considered for Gameweek 2 include a pair of Premier League newcomers, West Ham’s Dimitri Payet and Swansea’s Andre Ayew. Jeanz provided this handy comparison between the two midfielders, who have an excellent fixture on paper this weekend.

Big hitters under consideration include Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, but OGooner wonders whether the midfielder is as strong an option as many think for this week. Another is Yaya Toure, who was the subject of Invertebrate’s hot topic.

Players facing the chop going into Gameweek 2 include Chelsea’s expensive stars, who were disappointing against Swansea in their opening fixture. Doosra’s discussion invited the community to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of hanging onto the likes of Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Hazard.

Wayne Rooney is another player making his Fantasy owners a little nervous and there are question marks as to Martin Skrtel’s position as the Liverpool defender of choice. Both issues cropped up in our midweek Scout Picks discussion which we opened up to the community here.

The Members Tables

Spineless Weasel has been busy dissecting Gameweek 1’s underlying statistic with a raft of tables this week. The most attacking and defensive teams were amongst issues covered, as was the best defenders, strikers and midfielders.

Doosra has also been updating his defender tables, to show which so far are looking a good bet for bonus points and scoring goals.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Jaffalicious’s UEFA Cup themed tournament kicks off next week. Key matches include Irish Madridsta versus The Fantasy Freak, who finished in the top ten in FPL last season. I face Blue Lion, while Demi takes on Beavis. The full qualifying round fixture list can be found here.

After Gameweek 1 Craig McGorum takes the lead in Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season league.

With a sensational score of 63 Andy has a commanding lead at the summit of the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league, with the RMT’s Professor taking second spot 21 points behind.

Nocturnals leads the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, which is named after one of FFScout’s first ever posters.

The FFS Old Farts Club league , for our community’s more senior members, is topped by Le Saux Solid Crew, while Devious Weebles takes first in the Long and Winding Road main league.

The safety score in Torres Magic‘s Last Man Standing was 24 this week, which meant 150 managers were knocked out. Entry is still open to those who scored 24 or more in Gameweek 1 and will close at the end of Gameweek 2. More than 2,600 Fantasy managers have qualified so far.

In AZ’s cash league the aptly named ‘Pace Setters’, managed by Khizer Alam currently leads the way after scoring 51 points.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

With Walcott dropping in price, question marks over Depay after LVG said he is not ready for the no 10 role, Aguero saying he is not yet ready, surely there are much more pressing issues than selling Hazard don't you think. Plus I don't see his GW3 and 4 fixtures as bad as people make them to be. We saw how WBA were awful against City. Palace at home after that is an easy game for the attacking players imo. Palace don't defend well.

But yeah, every year a lot of people want to sell Hazard after GW1 and it's always insane. No surprise here.

Walcott has to be the priority imo. We only considered him because we were certain Sanchez is out for the first 2 GWs. We also thought he would easily keep Ox on the bench and ocassionally lead the line as well. GW1 showed all the above is not true. If if he starts GW2, do you think he will get more than 60 minutes? I doubt. So we are playing our hopes on Walcott starting (which is far from certain) and that he returns a big haul in 60 minutes or a bit more. A far stretch for me.

If you own Walcott i'm not sure why you would care if he loses 0.1 unless you plan to ship him in the very near future. We have had one game week and we knew he would be rotated which isn't an issue for a player who generally gets points when on the pitch.

We knew this info to start so assuming you are happy to take the odd benching in order to pick up his monster hauls then why does 0.1 matter if your not selling him? In any case i think he will start score and likely increase in value over the course of the season.

Except that it is not the odd bench. We thought he would be nailed for the first 2 games and that turned out to be false. Seems more like a 50-50 to me. And even when he starts, he will probably play less than 70 mins. Makes these big hauls far more unlikely.

Even if he does manage to score or assist, he will be at a disadvantage with baps. I can see some 5s,6s and 8s but don't see many double figures. That takes him out as a captain as well. For 9.0, I want more than that.

        1. d1sable
          • Has Moderation Rights

          ?

If he scores or assists as he does on average evey 83 ins in the last 3 seaosns (or something like that) he will always be in the frame for BAPS

plus he gets a point for a clean sheet and an extra one for a goal so will always be a good captain option if starting

He'd be at a disadvantage if he only plays 60-70 minutes. Even when he starts, Ox will be coming in for him in most games. Even Giroud in some games

Plus I'd never captain a player I am not sure he'd play. What was Walcott's record from cameos last season? Very poor I believe.

Hes not at a disadvantage if he plays 60-70 in comparison to another player if he scores or assists on average every 83 and they do every 223 or what ever.

sure he would score more if he played more but that's not the point, he could still score more than someone else who plays every game in the same price range

This. A 9.0 player that could be spending just as much time on the bench as on the pitch is not worth it when there's so many other good options for that price

If he plays 50% of the time but out scores a 100% time player like say Sterling then whats the issue.

            Points are the most important.

But if he's only playing 50% of the time he's not gonna get the same sort of haul he got when he was playing a full season is he?

100% time? He is not Ronaldo or Messi. Even those 2 won't do that from the bench 100% of the time. The security factor is pretty important as well. The peace of mind.

I've seen a lot of people wanting to captain Gomis, Sahko and Mane this week. Do we really consider these guys genuine captaincy contenders? I'm not saying I don't like a punt I've gone with Erkisen this week but they all seem a bit too punty as captaincy choices for me.

I have Haz, Wally, Sterling and Mane as my starting midfielders.

I really do want Payet or maybe Ayew, however I have to hold as we just don't have enough information on the 4 midfielders I already have, or the two potential replacements.

Hopefully having two GW's of data will be twice as useful in making a decision!

Sounding like Aguero is another sub appearance against Chelsea. Bring him in next week? Or get now?

    Thanks!

Aguero coming on against any defence that's already played an hour could be lethal

      I think so yeah.

Those of us saving a FT this week will probably downgrade a pricey mid and then upgrade Rooney to Kun imo. Could see 0.3 rise out of him next week.

Just started my team, so all FT. If I didn't get Aguero this week, it was just going to be a punt on Tekkers or someone else. Think I'll just take him now?

Same here. My plan all along was save the FT to move Kun in in GW3 or GW4 (Sterling downgraded, Rooney to Kun).
But GW1 had me thinking all week: with 2 ""easy" games (H) for Payet, shouldn't I downgrade Sterling>Payet already and still have the money itb to bring Aguero in GW3 or GW4.

Any advice? Stick on Sterling + FT, or move to Payet already for my long-term Kun plan?

I would shift sterling, but having him and Kun means you should have someone from city playing each week?

Not sure I get your answer (but thx)

I have Sterling now, so I yes, I worry not having any City coverage for a week or 2 in this case, but I'd never have both together (not enough cash)

It's Rooney+Sterling vs Payet+Kun in all cases, the dilemma is to do the move later together, or step by step.

Everyone on the site is going Payet + Kun. So be a contrary and you could beat us all?

Good logic, but I'm totally following the crowd here, it's all about the timing

                1: Rooney+Sterling+FT then Kun+Payet
                2: Rooney+Payet then Kun+Payet

Those two home games for Payet lend me towards the second option.. But if FPL has told me something, is that a having a saved FT is priceless

difficult but A as they will get more goals, Payet will get a lot of assists but that is nearly two assists for every 1 ayew goal
