Eden Hazard’s security of starts is now under threat. City’s attack flourish without Sergio Aguero, Anthony Martial’s versatility is a problem, whilst Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to rotate is benefitting Fantasy managers. Here’s the lessons learned from this weekend’s matches…

Hazard’s season goes from bad to worse…
Saturday’s team sheet at home to Villa sent shockwaves through the Fantasy community after the Belgian was benched for the first time in a league match under Jose Mourinho. A goal and two assists in his previous three had persuaded Hazard’s owners to hold in the hope that his sluggish start to the season would soon be a thing of the past but with his minutes now in question, the exodus is picking up pace. A spot on the bench against Dynamo Kiev in midweek may well be the final straw.

We’ve woken up to Wijnaldum…
The Dutchman’s stunning four-goal haul kick-started Newcastle’s kind run of matches in style as they grabbed a much-needed first win of the season. Wijnaldum’s display against Norwich means he’s now notched 20 times since August 2014 – that’s more than any midfielder in Europe over that period. The Dutchman looks essential to Steve McClaren’s chances of steering his side to safety and, at 6.8, has emphatically announced himself as a viable option for our five-man midfields.

City have more than enough without Aguero…
A 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth dispelled any theories that the league leaders would struggle without Sergio Aguero on board. With David Silva also missing, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to move to 4-4-2 paid off as front pair Raheem Sterling and Wilfried Bony ran riot against the beleaguered Cherries. City look full of goals right now and the Chilean’s penchant for playing with the handbrake off will keep their main men in contention, regardless of Aguero’s availability.

The Vardy bandwagon isn’t slowing…
A late brace at St Mary’s broke Southampton’s hearts and rescued another point for Claudio Ranieri’s never-say-die Leicester. At some point, the returns are bound to dry up for Vardy but, for now, his output is actually improving – he’s brought home his three highest hauls of the season in the last three Gameweeks. Having blanked in just one of nine appearances, that 35% ownership looks set to soar again, with the Foxes striker front of the queue for transfers in once more this week.

Mahrez has made his point….
Omitted from the first XI for the second match in succession, Mahrez’ half-time introduction was pivotal in inspiring his side’s comeback against the Saints. Having laid on three chances and provided the assist for Vardy’s last-gasp equaliser, the Algerian’s display will surely have given Claudio Ranieri food for thought as the Foxes prepare for the weekend visit of Palace. Despite their weekend showing, the Foxes have just one win in four now and Mahrez has surely done enough to earn a recall at home to the Eagles.

Martial’s versatility is a problem…
Shifted onto the left flank as Wayne Rooney was handed the lone striker role, the United youngster failed to find the net for the third successive Gameweek in a 3-0 win at Goodison. The third most popular striker in FPL, with an ownership of 30%, Martial’s ability to offer options on the flank is now proving detrimental to his Fantasy prospects and with Ander Herrera staking a claim for the role in “the hole” with a weekend goal and assist, Louis van Gaal isn’t short of options. With Memphis Depay benched and Juan Mata hauled off at the break, the United attack is becoming increasingly difficult to predict as Van Gaal looks for a winning formula.

Wenger’s suddenly not keen on rotation…
Despite the upcoming Champions League encounter with Bayern, the Gunners manager was reluctant to tinker with a winning line-up away to Watford. Wenger chose not to rest the likes of Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin at the back, whilst Theo Walcott yet again kept ahead of Olivier Giroud up top against the Hornets. In a weekend where Chelsea and United’s teamsheets raised an eyebrow, Wenger’s consistency of selection is proving reassuring for Fantasy managers.

Giroud isn’t going to allow us or Wenger to settle on Walcott…
Afforded yet another cameo off the bench, the Frenchman took his tally to three strikes in the last five Gameweeks – despite playing a mere 86 minutes over that period. Giroud may be playing second fiddle to Theo Walcott for the lone striker role right now but is still proving more prolific, with the England international notching just twice over that period by comparison. Wenger has now started Walcott in the last six league matches but Giroud is clearly not giving up without a fight.

Ozil’s consistency can make the difference…
With Alexis Sanchez running riot in recent weeks and Walcott’s out of position role also catching the eye, the German has remained under most Fantasy radars. Two assists against the Hornets, allied with maximum bonus, saw Ozil serve up back-to-back double-figure hauls as he rose to seventh amongst midfielders. At just 8.4 and owned by only 9%, it’s perhaps time we pay him a little more attention.

The promoted sides are being found out…
Bournemouth, Norwich and Watford all started the season relatively sprightly after arriving from the Championship but their early form is starting to wane. Shipping 14 goals between them in Gameweek 9, the promoted clubs have now picked up just one point apiece over the last three rounds of fixtures, with the former two now conceding 20 and 17 goals already. Whilst Watford have shipped just ten goals, a lack of impact in the final third has seen them net just six times – the worst record in the top-flight. With the honeymoon period now over, all three have plenty of work to do to stop a slide into the drop zone.

Norwich always need to start Redmond….
Handed a recall for the trip to St James’ the Canaries winger bagged a fourth goal of the season to take his tally to 44 points in FPL. With Wes Hoolahan dropping to the bench, Redmond’s threat down the right flank once again came to the fore to offer Alex Neil a crumb of comfort in the wake of Sunday’s 6-2 humbling. Given his side’s woes in defence, Redmond – one of only two players to score more than a single goal for Norwich this season – surely needs to start from now on if Neil’s men are to have a chance of beating the drop.

Think Jose tried this with Hazard the season before last, I'm sure its his way of trying to motivate him.

As a Chelsea fan I cant see us hitting the heights without Hazard, so don't expect him to be on the bench for long.

I bought Hazard in on WC last week over Costa, although I expected Costa to do well, I see no reason to change at this stage.

he is clearly trying to get a positive reaction out him. The win against Villa was an easy one and winning without Hazard doesn't prove anything

I prefer Rojo as above, think he'll be Utd's new first choice left back now that he's made up with LVG and after his solid performance in GW9.
I can see Jones being rotated with Blind as he's a Van Gaal favourite.

I bought Kolarov at 5.5, and I did Kolarov >> Bellerin yesterday

Using another player's minutes (Yoshida) to support your own player's argument (Cedric) was never going to work. I don't know why it's difficult to accept a simple fact that the player did not complete full 60. We have all been there, it's not something that happens very rarely.

      3. Billy Gilmore

Yeah, there are 2 situations where the minutes played matter, 30 mins and 60 mins. In those situations it will always be 59 and 31 (albeit slightly incorrect, correct in practice) Every other situation is immaterial.

Actually, I think you'll find that if a player comes off ar the 30 minute mark (lets say 30:42) then they will be awarded 30 and the player coming on 60 by FPL.

So fuzzy does have a point.

I'm not gonna go through every single player's history to find one who has come on/off on the 30 minute mark, but based on the minutes awarded by FPL for every substitution I have ever seen, i am gonna assume that yes, yes it has actually happened.

On the opening day of the season Cattermole came off with 29 FPL minutes under his belt, and Fletcher came on with 61. Annoyingly, not the exact evidence you're looking for.

If a player comes off a minute later, they will get 30 minutes, and the player coming on will get 60 minutes. No examples given, but given that every single substitution is calculated in this way by FPL, it is highly likely that this has happened some point in the many years of FPL, when a player has been subbed during the 31st minute.

No he really doesn't. His entire argument is based on consistency, but he offers no reason why consistency is required in this situation. There is no rule principle, or any other interest that calls for FPL to be consistent as to the the situations Fuzzy is talking about. FPL is not in the business of accurately describing the Universe, and creating an elegant model that adequately accounts for all of the minutes in a game. Instead, they are in the business of defining the cirucmstances under which points are earned. The did that: a defender earns 4 points if the play at least 60 minutes without conceding a goal.

"they are in the business of defining the circumstances under which points are earned. The did that: a defender earns 4 points if the play at least 60 minutes without conceding a goal."

In that case, in the example stated above, the player coming on in the 31st minute (say, 30:42) should not be awarded clean sheet points because they should not technically be awarded 60 minutes of game-time, having come on to the pitch half way through the 31st minute and not completing 60 full minutes of football.

Not asking for FPL to delve into any rules beyond the realm of fantasy football. I don't even care if we think they should change some of their rules (for instance, 6 points for a keeper coring a goal? Surely they should award more than that). All I am saying is that they should get their own rules correct.

First of all, what is with me constantly writing "the" when I mean "they"? 🙂

Second, IF it is true that they would give the whole 60 to the player who comes on at 30:42, that would be inconsistent and silly, but I have no reason to believe it is true.

Haha, I could have edited the quote for you, but this is a forum of rapid-fire replies. Typos are to be expected (all my comments have them).

You DO have reason to believe this is true, because FPL awarded Yoshida 30 minutes for coming on at 60:42. This is the whole point of Fuzzy's argument.

They awarded Fletcher 61 minutes when he came on at 29 minutes (and something) in gameweek 1 (see my response to AK Top 10 above), so we can assume they would award 60 minutes to someone coming on during the 31st minute.

(I don't even have Cedric, why am I arguing!?)

Yeah I'm a little confused with this one. It clearly states on the rules page a player must complete 60 mins to get the clean sheet. Yet a new shot/pass ruling out a previous assist isn't mentioned. To be clear (before the abuse starts) I know Pelle didn't earn an assist, but I'm standing by the fact it's not actually written on the FPL rule page why.

      Good luck to him though,

I think the same happened with a Pienaar assist 2 seasons back. I had him and I think he assisted Mirallas. Mirallas hit the cross bar but the rebound fell to him and he scored again. I do remember Pienaar not getting the assist on that day, but I think he might have got an assist later when it was reviewed.

Look this is my best way of putting it...

Yeah they are basically saying that when a player shoots at goal and it is either saved, blocked or hits the woodwork then the opportunity of an assist being awarded is gone. It's basically a new phase in play.

The way they word their rules though suggests that the final pass to a goal scorer is an assist. They neglect to mention that if the goal scorer doesn't score first time then an assist is not awarded.

I do have a bit sympathy for you. The rules on this particular regard (player hitting the post and then scoring) isn't really clear, but as I pointed out in the Pienaar-case 2-3 seasons back, it has happened before.

Very unlucky in all fairness not to get that assist, Virgil should have just scored from the initial shot. 😉

            PS. Not a Pelle owner.

What they do mention, however, is that when a player hits the post, and it rebounds and is then shot in for a goal, the first player gets an assist. In other words, it defines what Van Dijk did first--hitting the post and rebounding back to him--as the relevant assist for the goal that followed. Therefore, Pelle cannot have made an assist, because Van Dijk did. It is clearly stated in the rules that what Van Dijk did was THE assist for that goal.

Ironically, everyone has said the obvious - you can't assist yourself. So shouldn't they change the rules on this so that the last player to play the ball does get an assist? That's would be the most consistent/fair thing to do. I know this may result in a lucky assist being given but at least it would be consistent.

Toss up between Mahrez & Martial but leaning towards Mahrez??? There's even that mysterious All Out Attack chip...? But then I guess thats too much of a risk atm as Mahrez is no longer nailed & I suspect Martial will become the same?

Is the old saying never take a hit for defender just hearsay?

I just did kolarov to bellerin for a hit last week and it paid off handsomely, so obviously the rule isn't NEVER to take a hit for a defender.

(You always double down on 11.)
