Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri raided the January transfer market for the second time last week by snapping up Ghana international Daniel Amartey from FC Copenhagen. The versatile 21-year-old arrives at the King Power on a four-and-a-half year contract and revealed that the Foxes have been after his signature for some time:

“It’s a great pleasure to join Leicester City. I know the Club have been interested in signing me for some time and that was a big part of my decision to come here. All over Europe, people are talking about Leicester City and how well the Club is doing in the Premier League. The team plays exciting, attacking football and I’m looking forward to being part of it.â€

The History

Amartey started his career at Ghana lower league outfit International Allies, where he was spotted as a sixteen-year-old by Magnus Pehrsson, who was on a scouting trip in Africa ahead of his installation to the hotseat at Swedish club Djurgardens IF.

After inviting the player to train in Sweden for three months, Pehrsson secured the rights for Amartey’s signature from the day he turned 18. Having started off in the youth set-up, the all-action Amartey quickly found his way into the Djurgardens first-team, where he was utilised as a centre-half and central midfielder over the course of two seasons, producing just a single assist over 40 appearances in all competitions. After attracting interest from Liverpool, Amartey’s second year in Sweden was curtailed by a wrist injury which restricted him to just 11 league matches.

In the summer of 2014, the Ghanaian made his way to FC Copenhagen for a fee of €2.5m. He was mainly fielded as a central midfielder during his time in Denmark, though showed his adaptability by occasionally filling in at centre-half and right-back. During his first season, Amartey helped the club secure the Danish Cup and finish second in the Alka Superligaen, and leaves this year with Copenhagen sitting at the summit. Over the course of 63 appearances in all competitions, he produced six goals and three assists.

On the international stage, he made his debut for Ghana last year and has since turned out six times, helping his country finish runners-up in the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

The Prospects

Amartey’s arrival bolsters the Foxes options at a time when – prior to yesterday’s home win over Stoke – Ranieri’s side had started to stutter.

Nonetheless, with N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater – who bagged a goal and assist against the Potters – firmly established as Ranieri’s preferred options in the centre of the park, Amartey is likely to be eased into the Foxes first-team set-up. The new boy certainly possesses the attributes than would be perfect for Leicester’s counter-attacking tactics under the Italian, boasting searing pace and endless energy that should quickly see him move up the back-up pecking order ahead of the likes of Andy King and Gokhan Inler.

In central defence, Robert Huth and Wes Morgan look nailed-on in a backline that’s conceded just a single goal in the last five Gameweeks, whilst it seems unlikely that Ranieri would utilise the new boy at right-back at the expense of Danny Simpson, given that he’s impressed so much in the centre of the park. Arguably, though, this could be his quickest route into the Foxes’ first-team, offering Leicester a physical, very mobile presence behind Riyad Mahrez on the right flank.

As we mentioned in the Demarai Gray Scout Report, though, Ranieri has been a little reluctant to instantly alter his first-team – the likes of Christian Fuchs, for example, failed to start in the league until Gameweek 8 before playing all but one of the Foxes’ subsequent fixtures.

With his side now back at the summit, Ranieri – who has mainly resisted his previous penchant for tinkering since arriving at the King Power – is likely to court further caution over the run in, ensuring that Amartey (who has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League game) remains a peripheral figure for now. It’s more likely that he could be one for the following campaign, once Ranieri has worked out where he fits best into his first-team plans.

Wildcard activated after my 3rd 3millionth+ gameweek.

The Giroud subbing was the last straw. There was a rumour he wasn't going to play and with Delli Alli 1st sub, I might have got lucky. But alas, I'm not getting any breaks.

Keeperless and wanted Aguero, Costa, Sanchez and Ighalo. No point in waiting until the week when everyone else plays theirs.

Yeah my wc has gone great but i did it when the old template was set, seems harder to get differnntials now coz people like Firmino and Ivanovic and Sanchez and Siggy will get popular quickly.
Defo recommend it though, if nothing else it freshens up your team and keeps you interested

Agreed. If Mark has the bottle to do one this week with a tale of 32 bench points that should give you a boost if nothing else! Mind you you'd have to put up with Jonty having his best gw of the season. Please bring him down a peg or two for the rest of us!!

Difficult to make fun when you've had a stinker yourself. Mark isn't looking forward to it, I can tell you that. The last thing I want is to be on the scoutcast with Jonty this week. I haven't enjoyed it for a while tbh and there are good reasons that I'm not coming back right now.

I can imagine. Poor sod. Yeah, Jonty will be hard to stomach there's no doubt about that, bless him.

I'd figured there must be a good reason for you not being there as the banter at the beginning of the show regarding your absence has dried up.

Oh well mate. Hopefully you'll be able to at least make a guest appearance before the season is up. Not quite the same without old Granny.

😀 I'll give the conclusions here and a link to the calcs.

So what does my overall picture look like for each potential DGW?
        Liverpool vs Everton
        No DGW: 7%
        DGW25: 44.8%
        DGW26: 0.2%
        DGW34: 24%
        DGW37: 24%

        Newcastle vs Man City
        No DGW: 44%
        DGW25: 27%
        DGW26: 1%
        DGW34: 14%
        DGW37: 14%

        Stoke City vs Aston Villa
        No DGW: 87%
        DGW25: 4%
        DGW26: 1%
        DGW34: 4%
        DGW37: 4%

As you can see if these DGWs look to happen, I pretty much see it as evens whether they’ll happen before or after the blank. Sit tight, hold your FTs, wait and hope for definitive news before the next deadline.

I think you've overestimated the likelihood of taking the earlier fixture if available. I can see teams opting to delay the fixture to avoid congestion now - or to defer the problem when things might be easier.

Still a solid piece of work though.

Fair enough, that's just my take on it because if Liverpool, Everton or City go on a real run in the FA Cup then they'd be forced into a TGW at some point which is something we've never had before. Feel free to insert your own numbers and get your own likelihoods.

Guess "not being mean" was kinda mean...

What I meant was that there are weeks when captaincy fails are unexpected. Luck of the draw. This week choosing (cold) Lukaku due to a kinder fixture over red hot Aguero is not a good choice.

              1. Shifty
                • 12 Years
                9 years, 10 months ago

Well, how I saw it in my brain was

Lukaku was playing for a team that couldn't defend and had to attack attack attack - while he's been cold, Everton as a team have been alright attacking wise. Watched the Swansea MNF football game and they were all over the place defensively. Fancied Lukaku's chances @ home against them.

Obviously it wasn't an easy pick between Lukaku and Aguero...but I did fancy West Ham to give City a good game and be very resolute throughout the game. Result wise, it proved to be true. Not sure if you watched the game but WHU pretty much dominated City and Aguero, while clinical, was very much surpressed and cut a frustrated figure most of the game.

So before you come around and waving your Kun(c) around with hindsight and all, I suggest you consider your choice of words as we're all serious players here who do put serious thought into captain choices.

Has captain hindsight changed his name and grav?

I had the armband on Lukaku all week and only changed it to Kun last minute. Lukaku had scored or assisted in all of Everton's last six home games.

To be fair Lukaku had several good chances. Was hiding behind the couch a bit. Guess having chances and not scoring is the very definition of cold.

            That's harsh.

As Liverpool can´t defend I reckon they will try to attack against Leicester. That could lead to a lot of space to attack in for Mahrez and Vardy. I think it´s risky to sell Mahrez this GW.

We have a bench for that 🙂

You can usually phase out 2-3 with transfers and hold 4 on the bench!

No the blanks were beforehand and I WC'd on the DGW week. Everton then had two more DGWs between then and the end of the season. Lukaku, Baines, Coleman were golden.

I went light into a DGW involving "minor" teams last year and it stung me badly. Playing twice as many games is a huge advantage

Looking at RMT scores during such weeks can help you weigh up strong SGWers to the weak DGWers. It gives you an idea of just how good they are too.

More important this year with triple captain and bench boost options... imagine having 3x Kun's score in 2 games.

Players with 2 fixtures in one week will on average nearly double the score they will get from 1 fixture so in general the more players you have with 2 fixtures the better.

Of course there is a quality, form and fixture overlay so one fixture for Aguero may be better than 2 fixtures for many strikers.

You also need to weigh up pts across other game weeks or don't trash your squad

But if you plan well and get the right players it really can be worth 30-50 pts over someone ignoring it. It's certainly worth waiting for information rather than rushing to avoid price changes.

The best way to get a good rank in FPL

Choose the "Template" team - let all the "casual" players eventually fall away and let the people who think they are better then the "casual" players make ridiculous punts in order to gain ground as you steadily climb the ranks

    Discuss

    1. Jay_
        9 years, 10 months ago

The problem is, by the time you get the template team, your 50-100 points behind the people that made a flying start, you need a lucky/ good start for that strategy to work

well yeah but its not that easy to get the template team untill you too far behind to not need differentials to rise the upper ranks

Considering shipping Ozil for sure. Prob not to Sanchez just yet though. Finding it hard to ignore Firmino and Alli with their upcoming fixtures. Can't have everyone though.

Funny - not so long ago it was hard to choose between too many decent striker options. Now it's switched to midfielders, which was the way it was towards the start of the season. Just the small matter of making the right choices...

Not necessarily the case. They might have their DGW before the blank GW.

Yes. This is because they play twice in a GW instead of once. Also, if you already have players who will likely get a DGW (ie Liverpool and Everton players), then it is best not to transfer them out.

But it may be worth transferring more of those players in?

First year on this website so still new to the DGW.
            Thanks for the help

Yes of course. Bring in good players that have a DGW and you'll get two bites at the cherry. Beware that a blank GW might follow for those players a few weeks afterwards so don't over do it. 5-6DGW players should suffice.

Great, that's made my understanding much clearer. Thanks a lot.

Now just to wait and see who is confirmed to have a DGW.

If you take it in GW38, you need an instant product or you are throwing points away. Go back one week etc.

              Two reasons.

              1. Your new player has fewer GW left to score points to make up the -4.

              2. Hits taken at the start of the season (assuming losing a faller for a riser) is worth say 0.1m. Assuming 2000 points target or 20 points per 0.1m, or 20/38 per week, Moneyball says the 0.1m becomes less and less valuable with each passing GW.

no it won't happen till summer 100%. he realises Migs works on confidence so he is doing all he can to boost it for rest of season which is a very smart move from Klopp but I would be very surprised to see him no.1 next season if he even stays at the club.

Ward has potential, not sure how much, but would like to see him get some games

Would be nice to see him get 1 or 2 starts by the end of the season.
Our defense has been terrible recently, letting the ball bounce and conceding goals from half chances is unacceptable. It's a delicate situation now as it is the middle of the season, it'll be interesting to see what Klopp decides to do.

In the summer it will be rebuilding time, I honestly cannot wait to see what team Klopp can pull together.

yeah I can't wait to see us next season.

I think this season if he can win a cup and get us far in Europa and finish top 5/6 I would be happy with that.

The defence is a serious issue but it's been that way for a while.

Migs is not good enough for a top 4 keeper and I still think he will go in the summer or become no.2, new contract or not. We see players sign new contracts all the time only to leave in the next window. Suarez jumps to mind.

Migs is a great shot stopper and would be ideal for someone like WB who concede a lot of shots outside the box but we need someone who can command his area and actually shout at players, Migs is awful in the air and although he has made some great saves this season, he makes too many mistakes and when he lacks confidence he is really shaky. His distribution is poor and he takes so long with his decision making, also his kicks barely make it past the half way line. I think his weak areas would be very hard to fix at the age he is at even with Klopp. We need someone more like what Reina was with confidence and leadership.

If we don't fix our set piece defending we have no hope, it's become a mental issue where when we concede a corner the team almost knows they are going to concede.

                  This.

Look at the week just past. Form and numbers ebb and flow but for me I like to taken a look at the overall returns of a player versus the opposition.

I wouldn't have sold Ighalo this week versus Newcastle, in fact he have been a scout pick for me. Selling Lukaku before Newcastle at home however it pans out is a poor move.

        A) Mahrez (LIV)
        B) Sanchez (SOT)

Currently have Mahrez and can afford the switch, but with Sanchez still gaining fitness and the defences of their opponents, perhaps it makes sense to wait a week?

Id honestly not get to carried away regarding Mahrez at the weekend.

From a Stoke fan's perspective we were shocking, possibly the worst I have seen us this season and we allowed Leicester to stifle us and play to their strengths.

Mahrez had complete freedom of the pitch yet only registered a single assist.

Im not saying he's a bad player, far from it, all ilm saying is I would judge him on his next game v Liverpool to truly see whether he is worth keeping because when Stoke roll into town and play as badly as that then we make pretty much every player seem like a Messi/Ronaldo/Neymar/Suarez/Aguero hybrid.

No FA cup for SOT or LEI this w/e either, whereas LIV play a league cup semi and an FA cup game beforehand. Can see LEI scoring 2-3.

Nice. I thought he might start to give Benteke more minutes over this easy spell - to boost his confidence - but he just doesn't seem to fancy him.

The fact that Tekkers was handed only 15 minutes against Norwich was as important to me as Firmino's performance, in convincing me to buy him back.
