    Morning all.

    Am I right in thinking Lukaku's captaincy % isn't high enough to hurt non-captainers overall rank too much?

  2. Time to revisit 3-5-2?
    Mr Alex
    • 11 Years
    10 years, 3 months ago

    Going to bring in a strong fifth mid for my bench fodder, which as it happens, I am completely against, only so it enables me to play 3-5-2 in gw27 with the Aguero blank.

    I was thinking Antonio as he has been playing well and I could also play him when my fourth mid, Alli, plays MCI away (one of the only games where I deem having s strong fifth midfielder to be of use).

    The other option I have considered is Lingard, he's only 4.2 and after the blank I wouldn't need to transfer him out (unlike I would with Antonio) due to his bench fodder price tag.

    Any other ideas?

      Alli is great away from home 🙂

      Lingard and Antonio seem like decent options, if you think you need the money you've already answered your own question

        • 11 Years
        10 years, 3 months ago

        Yeh true. This is exactly the reason why I don't have a strong fifth mid, as then I am forced to play my 4th mid in games, where, were I to have a strong 5th mid also, I perhaps wouldn't play them in (and they often get big points in the 'difficult games')

        Yeh looking like its between these two, money will play a part I would imagine as well so il see what plan I come up with.

            Don't know about nailed, but he's been playing well and I was thinking he'd almost certainly still be in the team come blank gw27. After gw27, were he to be dropped I wouldn't be bothered too much due to his price.

            However bibelnissen made a very good point of trying to find a 5thmidfielder who will be playing in both gw27 and gw30. Because of this, I'm gonna chill and wait to see who has fixtures in both of these gameweeks. There s very good chance the United could have a blank in gw30 which would make Lingard a no-go for me.

      As you say I'm wondering if a five man midfield may be the way to go for the next 3 gwks - especially if you own Aguero.

      In GWK 27 Aguero misses a game and those with a strong playable 5 man midfield are going to have an advantage.

      As a J King owner I'm looking to off load him and reckon I can afford to bench one of Lukaku or Mahrez in gwk 25.... so am definitely on the look out for a good fifth mid or even a double fourth mid fantasy pivot and spend a bit more.

        Its not something I'd do long term though. Benching Mahrez is fraught with danger as many have discovered and I've done much better having a rubbish fifth mid than not oddly.

      2. Mr Alex

        10 years, 3 months ago

        Yeh. I think it has to be done, otherwise I'll be left with just Kane up top and a weak looking midfield.

        My debate is between Lingard/Antonio. If I buy Antonio it will only be a matter of time before I wamt to transfer him out, and with the DGW/blank planning, all ft's are vital. If I buy Limgard I can simply leave him there after GW 27.

        I think a front 7 in GW 27 of the following looks good:

        Sanchez - Ozil - Mahrez - Alli - Antonio/Lingard

        Kane - Vardy

        I think you should keep GW30 in mind aswell when picking a King replacement, not just the next three. Bournemouth could easily have two decent fixtures in the blank weeks, so maybe looking within the same team wouldn't be a bad idea.

      I'm considering this myself. Remember there is also blanks in GW30, so any decent fifth mid from a team that has a fixture in both GW27 and GW30 could come in handy.

      But it's all the strikers scoring well such as Vardy/ Aguero/ Rooney/ Kane/ Costa

      Whereas midfielders keep going through spells of short term form like Arnautovic, Wijnaldum, Firmino, Barkley, Mahrez

      3-4-3 much more important imo

        I think what Mr Alex meant was to lay out the idea of buffing up your 5th mid to cover for blanks, then Jonty just presented the hot topic as a general 3-5-2-discussion.

        Point is, you won't have three strikers in GW27, and definately not in GW30 either.

          Yes this. Also GWK 25 sees lots of mids with great fixtures. Annoyingly some of which have blanks to come though.

          But with GWK 27 it certainly raises the prospect of making sure you have a good five man midfield in place ready for that.

        Yeh but in order to play 3-4-3 in gw27 (assuming that's what you were referring to) me, as well as many others, would have to sell both Aguero and Lukaku in order to have a playing front 3 in gw27.

        Gw27/special circumstances aside, 3-4-3 all the way.

          Ah sorry I misunderstood, in that case yeah it looks good

          Think I'll be ending up with 4-5-1 for the week and I'm fairly happy, I'd sooner have the extra defender than ditch Lukaku/ Aguero (lose value). Fixtures are fairly good though.

          Dawson (CRY)
          Daniels (wat)
          Toby (SWA)
          Simpson (NOR)
          Alli (SWA)
          Ozil (mun)
          Payet (SUN)
          Mahrez (NOR)
          Gosling (wat)
          Vardy (NOR)

          Can have any keeper too for that week as I plan to lose Hennessey

            4-5-1, interesting, hope it works out well for you. It looks a great team on paper.

            When I sell Lukaku it will be for Vardy, and although I will lose value on Lukaku, I am hoping Vardy will be a mid-long term replacement as his fixtures are great.

      Sanchez - Payet - Alli - Mahrez - Silva
      Aguero - Kane - Lukaku.

      8 good attackers like the lot above is affordable.

      So, i think it's best to get all of them and bech them accordingly.

        I do kind of understand this argument but don't really agree with. As you mentioned if you can afford it then why not, but I am sure that our starting XI can always be improved. People often say things like, 'I'd rather have the player with points on my bench than not have him at all', but that is a flawed view IMO.

        An example I used yesterday was that It is possible that you could own, hypothetically, Alli and Barkley at the same time. They combined could score consecutively for 6 weeks, say, Barkely 3 of those weeks and Alli the other 3. It is extremely possible that rather than getting 3 of these returns, you get 1/2 of these returns due to wrong benching decisions. For me the best option has to be getting a fourth mid and sticking with him, ensuring you get all his points. Then, use the remaining money elsewhere.

        Yes this is the other option. Lots of thinking is going to be required to see what is going to work best. No rushes transfers this week.

      You need a strong fifth mid but not a 3-5-2. So many good strikers this year. Bench boost will need a big fifth as well.

      I've benched Mahrez then Arnie in the last two weeks, Mahrez actually getting me 6 off the bench, but after seeing last night he won't be there again. I am currently benching Alli this weekend, he hasn't been as good at home and isn't likely to be 100%.

      Likewise, thinking of upgrading Gosling to Alli for the next few weeks. Would leave me with a front 8 of
      Sanchez / Ozil / Payet / Mahrez / Alli
      Aguero / Lukaka / Ighalo

      Also thinking of going Lukaka > Kane this week, spurs and everton numbers are polar opposite at the moment. Will wait to see the score tonight though.

      I think all this bench fodder talk is nonsense. Do you honestly not see the value in being able to rotate a strong front 8 based on form/fixtures? I'm not talking anything crazy, but with the likes of Antonio, Alli, Mahrez, Arny, it's so easy to build a strong front 8 and play the 7 with the best fixtures/form. It is so much better, in my opinion, compared to wasting transfers left and right to get what you need. There's no way you feel comfortable playing attackers when they are against the best defences in the league, but is it really efficient to transfer them out because of one game, or play them expecting a 2 pointer?

      1. Mr Alex
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 3 months ago

        Sorry it's quite a long reply, but I think it should clarify why I, and many other players use 'bench fodder.'

        Honestly said, I don't see the value in a strong 8 rotation. Of course, on paper a strong front 8 looks much better than a strong 7 with bench fodder, and of course being able to rotate a strong 4th/5th midfielder sounds great, but in reality these things are not that great.

        Why do some have a strong front 8? We can only play 7 attackers at a time. This means every week you've got someone like an Antonio/Arnoutovic on the bench. On paper it looks good having such a luxury, but in reality you're just benching 1 million that could be spent on the starting XI.

        Also, rotating dependent on fixtures sounds all good and logical but it's extremely silly in my opinion. Players are not restricted to scoring in easy games. It is possible I could, hypothetically, own Alli and Barkley in 4/5th mid. They could proceed to get get combined (each gameweek on of these players blanks, and one scores high) returns 6 fixtures in a row. However the players score in the games you thought were 'hard' and thus you proceeded to bench them missing out on their points. Because of this its not just simply a case of 'I'd rather have the player on my bench with points than not at all', as some pro strong fifth-mid players say, it's a case of you're missing out on many points.

        I currently own Alli and Stanislas. If I had owned say Arountovic as a fifth mid, I would have missed out on so many Alli points. As I said, players are not restricted to scoring in easy gameweeks, and therefore, in my opinion it is important to play the player each week to be sure you get their points.

        However, if money is a luxury, then having a fifth mid sat on the bench would be fine, as I could play them when my current fourth got injured, but I certainly wouldn't get into the rotation game if I owned a good fifth mid, he would simply be a slightly more expensive bench fodder. The only games I would consider having a strong-fifth mid useful for, would be for when they Arsenal and Man City away from home, which happens only twice a season.

    Will wait to see scores tonight, but thinking Gosling > Alli and Lukaka > Kane

    Myhill / Butland
    Bellerin / Toby / Cresswell / Nyom / Wolly
    Sanchez / Ozil / Payet / Mahrez / Gosling
    Aguero / Lukaka / Ighalo

    2FT, 4.0 ITB.

    A) Yes, do those two moves, that'll work out nicely given the Aguero blank in GW27
    B) You got problems elsewhere bro, I would suggest X > Y

      Barry was a good choice I reckon - obviously a must sell now though given you're going to need you're 5th mid in GW27.

      Lingard, Gosling, Wanyama are options but the best would be Drinkwater - GW27 and 30 he'll be in the team most likely and you'll be thankful for Leicester's good fixtures then..

    I have a few transfer options for the next GW but saving could be important.

    Current team:
    Schmeichel, Butland
    Dawson, Williams, Rose, Bellerin, S.Taylor
    Ozil, Payet, Alli, Mahrez, Gosling
    Kane Lukaku Aguero.

    A) Dawson -> Reid
    B) Dawson -> Cedric
    C) Ozil -> Sanchez
    D) Lukaku -> Vardy
    E) Gosling -> Antonio
    F) Save
