Everton manager Roberto Martinez added to his options in the final third by splashing the cash on Oumar Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow. The 25-year-old – who had previously been eyed up by the likes of Chelsea, United and Spurs – arrives at Goodison for a reported fee of £13.5m, making him the third most expensive signing in the Merseysiders’ history. Versatile enough to lead the line up front or take his place out wide, the Toffees boss stressed that Niasse isn’t just here to make up the numbers:

“He’s not back-up for anyone. He has his own ability, his own conditions and he is someone who can stretch defenders. He can open space and has a real intelligent way of combining for others. He can fit in different formations – on his own, with another, out wide. He’s flexible and at 25 it’s the perfect moment for coming to the Premier League.”

The History

Niasse started his career as a winger with Senegal second-tier side US Ouakam. Having signed a professional contract in 2008, he helped his side gain promotion that year before going on to win the Senegal Premier League in 2011.

After scoring 102 times in 154 appearances, he made his way to Norway on a six-month loan deal but managed just three appearances due to poor form and injury. Rejecting a move to French club Saint-Etienne, Niasse signed with Turkish club Akhisar Belediyespor in August 2013 – across 40 appearances for his new club, he served up 15 goals and seven assists, catching the eye of Lokomotiv Moscow prior to the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

Niasse took his time to settle in Russia, though still managed a respectable return of six goals and four assists in 19 outings across all competitions last term, This year, though, his form has picked up considerably – in just 23 appearances, he’s delivered 13 goals and 10 assists, which includes an impressive four goals and three assists in six Europa League matches.

On the international stage, Niasse turned out six times for Senegal Under 23s without finding the net. He has since been selected for the senior side on five occasions, scoring twice.

The Prospects

A long-term target of Martinez, Niasse’s all-round game makes him a canny acquisition for Everton. Strong, pacey and hard-working, he’s also good in the air and, as his decent assists return suggests, a very unselfish player in and around the box.

Although he was unavailable for selection for the Toffees’ midweek clash with Newcastle due to a work permit issue, it may well be that the versatile attacker is eased into contention before nailing down a starting role, according to his manager:

“Mentally he is ready – psychologically he would love to be involved against Newcastle on Wednesday. But from a physical point of view, his last game was on December 10 so it has been a few weeks [since he played]. He is refreshed and I think we need to give him an individual programme to get him up to speed, but in the same way, I want him to be used in the games to get that familiarity with the players and with the league, so that he can have a contribution straight away. It will be assessing every day to see how he adapts. “

From a Fantasy perspective, Niasse’s classification as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game will ensure that the vast majority give him a wide berth.

With Romelu Lukaku nailed-on as the lone striker under the Spaniard and Ross Barkley equally secure in the central support berth, Niasse’s best chance of securing regular minutes is likely to be on the flanks, though there’s no shortage of competition from the likes of Gerard Deulofeu, Kevin Mirallas, Arouna Kone, Tom Cleverley, Aaron Lennon and Steven Pienaar.

Arguably, such a scenario would merely strengthen Barkley’s position as the only viable midfield option at Goodison – the playmaker has started every league match this season, whereas the likes of Deulofeu has been selected in the first XI in just three out of the last seven Gameweeks.

Although a price of 7.0 isn’t overly expensive, Niasse’s likely reverse out of position prospects will ensure he remains overlooked in the mid-price bracket – particularly when Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo set you back 7.2 and 6.4 respectively. With Southampton new boy Charlie Austin (7.0) also throwing his hat into the ring with a debut strike against United, Niasse – for all his talents – will struggle to make a viable claim for inclusion in our FPL squads.

Should Lukaku be ruled out with the back problem that forced him out of last night’s 3-0 win, though, the versatile Niasse – providing he steps up his fitness and receives his work permit in time – could lead the line as the Merseysiders make their way to Stoke this weekend. If the big Belgian proves his fitness in time, though, Niasse will surely struggle to earn a central berth if, as expected, Martinez keeps faith in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

With Vardy Kane, Barkley, Alli and Rooney all having a great week, surely England should be favourites for the Euros in the summer. I know Messi and Suarez were on fire last night but they dont have the quality that England do ..

I guess it is reasonable value, and it looks good from those stats, however 4 of those goals came in 2004, since then he's got 2 in major tournaments.

As you say though it's Wales, Russia & Wales, so the fact that only about 2 of his 51 goals came against elite teams (if you discount friendlys) shouldn't matter too much!

Theories outside of science may also at some stage become backed up by evidence also scientific theories may also fail to do so.

Well no, in science something that only be deemed a theory once there is substantial evidence behind it, it is effectively something that has been confirmed as fact, or as near to fact as is humanly possible. A "theory" a bloke on the street invents could well end up being confirmed, but it doesn't mean there is any evidence behind it to start with.

But only scientific hypotheses may be tested. The same thing that allows 'other theories' to be immune to scientific scrutiny, also prevents them from ever being proven.

Lots of things. Getting a higher rank for one. Winning my cash league for another - although I'd settle for the second place prize currently - the leader is in the top 300.

Also I like the planning and stat finding side of it. I still find it fun. That's the key I think if it stops being fun then it's time to stop. Haven't reached that point yet.

Problem with Giroud means having to chose between Özil and Sanchez in midfield - would like to go with both. And I suspect he might get limited minutes in GW 27 against mun. Surely wise to hacve an eye on that for Lukaku replacement.

No.1 on the second table can be a disclaimer to the interpretation when looking at results in previous 4. I think I am convincing myself towards Giroud with the 1st table. Just needs the coin to fall on the other side. Good luck to me!

Its a global filter. Just means you've set yours from a previous one to 2014/15 I guess. Says 15/16 for me. Also it can't be 2014/15 and have Bournemouth in it at all as they were in the championship then.

Hey Lucy, apologies for being one of those posters who assumes because you support Southampton and are clearly knowledgable you must have access to super secret information and therefore know all the line ups in advance but...

Chances of Austin being in the team for the next few games? 🙂

Koeman expects him to recover from the knock for Watford but I don't know what that means for his starting chances. I'm certainly looking at him as a potential Lukaku replacement but he's the riskiest of the bunch.

Answer these 7 questions and I will tell you the minimum number of active players you'll have in GW 30:

    1. How many FTs do you have?

    2. How many Liverpool, Everton, Man City and Newcastle players do you have?

    3. How many Leicester, Southampton, Stoke and Newcastle players do you have?

    4. How many Everton and Sunderland players do you have?

    5. How many Bournemouth and Swansea players do you have?

    6. How many Liverpool and Chelsea players do you have?

    7. How many Man City and Norwich players do you have?

            9

+1 West Ham beat Liverpool in their 4th round replay

If one of your LIV/EVE/MCI/NEW players isn't a GK keep hold of your EVE/MCI players when they have a blank. Does that make sense?

No GK - intrigued why that makes a difference!

What do I need to do between now and then? Start transferring Stoke / Lei / Sou / New players in?

Thanks for that - Have Courtois and Hennessey in goal so looksl ike it'll be 7 - max 8. Is that if I use every FT between now and then on players who will make that GW?

Just realised I've made loads of mistakes in my replies if your answer to question 2 was 3 or more, for some reason I thought you needed at least one defender on your bench, obviously you can play 5 defenders in GW 27.

I'll go back and correct them.

Just heard about this on TalkSport, thought I'd look it up. The Football Manager game has been used to simulate the premier league run-in from February to the end of the season. They've input the season's data so far and played out the remaining fixtures. Apparently they've picked the correct champions three seasons in a row via this method: luck, I say. Look at the state of this table! It has Chelsea in sixth. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/football-manager-2016-simulation-predicts-7304403

His punditry is going to have taken a serious hit. He jumped in at the deep end, that Valencia job just looked doomed to fail from the outset, and now all of his insight and criticism will be faced with "why should we listen to you? You failed".

Part of what was good about Neville was that he was always talking from a winner's perspective. When he criticised a player, provided insight, said what a player/team should have done, he did so from the perspective of a man who had won it all. Now, when he says "they got their tactics wrong", he does so as a man who has only experienced failure as a manager. That may be tough to recover from.

Ha, indeed, he went from so thoroughly unlikeable to being the main reason I watched Sky's coverage. I think he's a wonderful pundit, and he can't be written off as a manager yet - going into such a tough job was rather foolish - but his reputation has taken a hit.

Yeah, my dislike for him has always been a bit of a mystery to me, but I've never liked him as a player or person.
Then he became a pundit and I started to respect him a lot. It was weird..

Now I'm kind of in a limbo in between, I think he knows his stuff and I respect his unbiased opinion, but I also find him slightly arrogant (along with the rest of the Class of 92).

you've got to be pretty arrogant to think you will have what it takes to manage in a league and language that you have no knowledge of, and possess zero experience as a manager.... So probably still pretty dislikeable 😉

it was arrogant of him to think that winners mentality could immediately replace the hard graft that other managers, like Fergie and many others, had to do before being successful. the winning mentality instilled at Untied all came from Ferguson and its not enough to simply be around someone like that and immediately think you can reproduce it. He'l think I threw myself in at the deepend, il learn from this but this is turing out so bad for him that it could permanently damage him now

I think there are so many ingredients that go into being a successful manager. It's not just tactical nous, it's character, being able to deal with the players the workload, etc. Throw in the fact that he has jumped into a completely new character and culture. I think he should be applauded even if it fails, I don't think there's any shame in his attempts to try it.

He will soon win the public back as a pundit and his criticism of other manager's tactics still holds up as he always backed it up with evidence. It's one thing spotting things, it's another thing applying it to a squad/team.

He'll probably just be a bit more self deprecating which is always an endearing quality!

He appeared like he had all the makings of a potentially good manager, the problem was taking on a job that was far, far too big for him. To use a phrase of his, it was either arrogance or naivety.

Another option is to teach English abroad via the likes of TEFL and CELTS. Has anyone done this? I love travelling and it seems a wonderful gateway to the rest of the world (entry level jobs on a WHV have started to take their toll).

Ooh ooh, me me me. o/

I've considered taking a TEFL course. I already live and work abroad, but my job isn't all that fulfilling. However, I wouldn't want to take a pay cut.

What kind of earning potential does it have?

Also, you can do the whole course from home, right? Or is there a written exam at the end I'd need to fly back for?

Big potential if you earn a decent currency in a country with a low cost of living. Where do you live now?

A tell course is practical so you need to be there everyday. There are online ones but you won't learn anything and they won't get you a job.

Also I suggest doing a CELTA course from the British Council or IH. This would be better than some general tell certificate. And would actually get you work.

Good news is they have centres around the world so there's prob one close to you.

Check out tell.com, davesesl.com and ih.com. Good luck!

I did a TEFL many years ago and people get to go to placements all around the world. It is a good way to travel/expand horizons. The pay wasn't great but supplemented it with private lessons. Worth getting into teaching Business English as that might lead to job offers further down the line.

Have done that in Egypt and South America. To be honest, it as Ok but my strong advice would be that you must enjoy the teaching side of it at least to some extent. Although you are in an exciting foriegn country and all that you spent a lot of time in that classroom (for not a huge amount of money). So those are long days if you don't enjoy that part of it.

But if you do then it's great, as you get the chance for much deeper experience of the country where you genuinely make friends with the "locals", both students and colleagues.

Plus you sure are popular with the students...

Noticed the Uni discussion on the last post...

Been doing a bit of life contemplating and wondering about whether to go to Uni as a mature student and take, say, a history degree. Anyone here done a history degree? I really wish i had done History over Business at Uni but it all depends on your end result:

Do you want to be a history teacher? do you want to be a full-time historian? or just for the knowledge, the first 2 i'd say go for it, the latter, i'd say not. In my opinion anyway

Contrary to popular opinion, a top class history degree gets you more than teaching or archival research jobs.

Yes of course i was simply stating some of the options, all depends on the end result and what he/she wants to do with it. I personally wouldn't go pay 9k a year for a business degree now, it's not an end result such as radiography (first thing i thought of) there's an end job result there

I've done a history degree... and then an MA in history... and now a PhD (along with teaching undergrads) 😀 I didn't pay £9k though, 'only' 3k.

What are your motivations for doing one? Where are you looking at going?

mmm I wonder if it's just a hobby if I'm being painfully honest with myself. Thanks for the input everyone.

Lucy, please could you advise on how much work's involved with a history degree? How big is the step up from A level (got an A at A level, loved studying it)?

        1. Lucy.
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 10 months ago

The step up is fairly notable but you are given a whole first year to make that change (hence why it won't be counted towards your final degree). The main change will be in the way you are required to construct an argument. Rather than the A Level format of 'On the one hand, x argues this but on the other hand, y argues this', you are required to use the views of others to construct an argument which is not 'balanced' in the same way. By this I mean - You need to counter-argue those that oppose your view and you need to show why those that agree with your point of view are right. You need to engage with historical content on a critical level, skills which you'll develop throughout your degree. If you're cool with having strong opinions and justifying them, you'll get along just fine. In my experience, mature students tend to adapt better to this but I've never worked out why.

Your entire degree would revolve around the word. Without academic discussion/debate, it's all very dull.

As for work load: you typically, you would have 3 modules a semester, 6 for the year. For each module, you'd expect to read 2-3 20-page articles each week for your hourly seminars, as well as preparing 2 essays for each module, normally half way through and at the end. Additionally, you'd attend 2 hours of lectures each week, for each module.

The balance will change as you advance through the years, more reading, longer essays and fewer lectures.

Wouldn't going to uni as a full time student be a bit of a risk, then?

What about doing something online, like OU or even just something like: http://www.thegreatcourses.co.uk/category/history.html?CFM=category_slider

I dropped out of uni because I was only studying something out of interest, not because I wanted a career. Found it really hard to commit. Still interested in learning though, so been thinking about investing in a Great Courses, erm, course, to learn in my spare time.

OU could be a good option if it's purely for a hobby/interest or a love of learning. If you want to use to elevate your career or try new things, I'd advise going to university.

To be honest, in my case and most of friends (all which have now graduated) our degrees themselves, content wise, have served absolutely no relevance in our jobs and probably never will.

But having that solid degree from a solid university just opens doors for you - plus it's a fantastic period of your life

Needs to be the right degree too. Some employers won't even look at some degrees from some universities (very wrong, but it is what it is).

History is a solid degree though and it'll definitely help you in your career one way or another.

Which unis are you looking at?

Depends what you want to do really career wise and if you can afford it. I managed to squeeze in just before the fees increased, luckily.

But for sure I wouldn't have the job I have to do or be in this career path without my degree (even if I'm never going to need to use the Quantum Mechanics content I learnt)

I needed a degree to get my job, but the actual subject - English - hasn't really done me any good at all. However, I chose English because I love it, I would never change my choice because I had so much fun doing it. It depends on your reason, for a job it may not be necessary, but I'm a big fan of learning for learning's sake.

Why everybody want to sell Lukaku right now? We don't know how serious is that inujry and he has nice fixtures. Better option is to wait till GW27 and than when he blanks make him to Vardy who has city and arsenal away right now and norwich home in GW27

Personally I won't be getting anyone in for him as i'd simply prefer to save the FT. I will definitely be getting Vardy in 2 weeks though. It is worth mentioning though, this community represents a minute percentage of players. Just look at last week, 146,000 players got rid of him. So its not just this knock.

Worth waiting for news but the news will be vague when it comes, he has a blank coming up, he's falling behind quite a few others in the form table (most of whom are cheaper) and people like the idea of the funds in the bank to finance Sanchez.

If it turns out 14 teams will wind up blanking in GW30, it's important to plan how best to have not only 11 players for that week, but also which 4 with a blank you'll carny on your bench. If everyone then plans to WC in GW33 to get 15 DGW players, you should look at which GW30 blank players have the best fixtures in between 30 and 33. That way, you maximize potential points during the two week interval, when you can take a few risks without the guilt of long term problems.

With that in mind, here are the GW 31-32 fixtures for the big teams with a potential blank GW30

      City: MUN, bou
      Arsenal: eve, WAT
      Chelsea: WHU, vil
      WHam: che, CYP
      Spurs: BOU, liv
      Liverpool: sou, TOT
      United: mci, EVE
      Everton: ARS, mun

Conclusion: Hold onto Aguero, Sanchez, Ali and maybe Chelsea assets if you have them, over GW30

Think I'm going to not buy VVD just because I already have Bertrand.

Down to Cresswell or Azpilcueta now. Think the Chelsea man might nick it, although I do like the attacking Cresswell option.
