All eyes will be on Selhurst Park for Sunday’s curtain-raiser, as Crystal Palace attempt to claim their fourth consecutive league win against Liverpool. The Eagles haven’t secured three points since Gameweek 17, while the Reds arrive in good spirits following their 3-0 triumph over Manchester City in midweek.

Palace’s attack displayed signs of improvement over the last four Gameweeks, charting joint-fifth for goals (six) and fifth for shots inside the box (35). It’s worth noting, though, that only Aston Villa managed fewer big chances (two) than the Londoners. Conversely, the Eagles’ rearguard has been unable to hold up their end of the bargain since the turn of the year, placing joint-top with Norwich City for goals conceded (21) from Gameweek 20.

Although they were absent for one wave of fixtures, Liverpool ranked top for goals (11) across the previous four Gameweeks. No team came close to matching their shot accuracy (55.3%) or shot-conversion rate (28.9%), underlining their clinical touch in the final third. Jurgen Klopp’s charges have balanced their offensive prowess with a newfound defensive diligence, recording two clean sheets and conceding the second-fewest big chances (three) in their last four fixtures.

Hopefully Butland's 5 points off the bench can help negate all those Firminos points.

Dann was luckily taken care of.

I mean, it's pretty clear Benteke's left foot got clipped but he's a big bloke - there's no reason that should be enough to floor him. He didn't 'dive' but he definitely made a meal of it. No pen for me. That said, he took the pen amazingly.

I can stand on my feet if I was punched does that mean it's not a foul. I can have my shirt ripped off me does that mean it's not a foul. He affected the momentum in his run therefore a foul.

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 11 months ago

Did he affect the momentum of his run though? How could we know given Benteke threw his other leg.

Contact does not equate to a foul if it doesn't impede. If the foul was going to impede, then he wouldn't need to throw his other leg.

Its debatable to call it a foul. in 80% of the times that wouldnt be a foul in the middle of the pitch in 30th minute, let alone a PK in 94th.

But, there was contact and it was ok for ref to call the pk. No idea how the assistant saw it.

all this 'contact' business is an absolute joke. in other words if a defender puts his little finger on the attackers back does that make it a pen?
the 'oh I've been shot' look on benteke's face simpy proves that cheating is part of his game.
today's game has unfortunately become so diluted that at times it is pathetic.

but after all that Delaney must be the thickest defender around and deserved to be punished

Yes there's contact but Delaney is clearly pulling out of the tackle and contact is just a consequent of pulling his knee back as he accelerates from the momentum. Ball was looked over hit as well which should surely be a factor considered.

Very harsh to give but if you want to be technical it is a penalty in the rules of the game. I just think Mariner had an agenda today against Palace. Made some very poor calls throughout the game
