Up next this busy Friday afternoon, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of a reduced round of fixtures. As usual, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero holds a substantial lead at the summit with over 44% of the votes cast ahead of a home clash with Stoke. Although City have a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, the Argentine’s six goals in the last four look too good to ignore against a defence that’s conceded four times against both Liverpool and Spurs in their last two matches.

With 28% of the votes, Harry Kane is Aguero’s only real contender as Spurs prepare for the visit of West Brom. Although the Baggies have conceded just four times in five, Kane’s run of three double-figure hauls in five, which includes seven goals, an assist and 11 bonus points, suggests he’ll be a solid rival to the City striker.

Alexis Sanchez is some way back on a mere 5% despite netting three times across double Gameweek 34. The Arsenal midfielder has now racked up six goals and a couple of assists in his last six outings and travels to a Sunderland side with just a single clean sheet in their last nine at the Stadium of Light.

Southampton’s visit to Villa earns Graziano Pelle joint-third spot in the poll. With the midlands side having suffered the ignominy of relegation, the Italian is backed by 5% in light of four goals and three assists in his last five league outings.

Jurgen Klopp’s recent rotation policy means that Daniel Sturridge is another overlooked big-hitter. With Divock Origi ruled out, though, the England international may well lead the line at home to Newcastle – just 3% are willing to roll the dice on the 10.0-priced frontman, who has served up five goals and a pair of assists in six league appearances since returning from injury.

Further down, Pelle’s team-mate Sadio Mane is amongst a handful of candidates on the 1% mark. The Senegal international has netted three times in the last four now and bagged a hat-trick against Villa last season. Dele Alli is another differential option after his two-goal salvo at Stoke and is joined by the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez as all four prepare for home comforts.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

    Aguero Kane Long

    Sakho Payet Smalling

    Darlow (DDG)
    Bellerin Sakho Simpson Walker (Reid)
    Mahrez Özil Sanchez Milner (Payet)

    A) Payet > Alli (-4)

to do an 8 point hit or not.....

    - currently 9 players with a game, 4future dgwers, and nasri/bolasie
    - mitrovic/clichy may not start
    - initial plan was to remove bolasie and nasri
    - worth getting rid of mitrovic (what if he starts) for an extra hit?
    - worth getting rid of martial (future dgwer) for an extra hit?

    1) How many hits is it worth taking to ensure a full starting 11?
    2) Who are the priorities to get rid of and who should I replace them with?

Gabriel, Lovren, KDB, Coutinho and Mitrovic at risk.

(Already doing Martial --> Kane to field 11)

      1) Depends on your priorities. I am taking a -8 pt hit as it stands getting rid of three non playing players to set me up for the coming weeks.
      2) Everton assets imo. Hard to say who to replace with. Depends on your team.

    Any hints please?

Currently have AOA and TC as well as £0.4ITB with 1FT.

    Robles / DeGea
    Simpson / Bellerin / Sagna / Gabriel / Clyne
    Lanzini / Barkley / Milner / Sanchez / Coutinho
    Aguero / Martial / Vardy

    Options I was thinking of:

    A) Barkley + Martial > Alli + Pelle (-4)
    B) Barkley + Martial > Drinkwater + Kane (-4)
    C) Martial + Vardy > Pelle + Okazaki / Ulloah (-4)

I know that I won't have a goalkeeper to field this week but don't want to loose too many points. Currently 2nd in my league with 3rd closely behind. Also is Vardy worth keeping for when he does eventually return? Thanks

300 Definitely nose bleed territory! 😀 Best season so far has been top 8k. However, my rival is still 1 point ahead of me in our mini league. But I am coming to get him 😉 Best of luck rest of the season mate and good to see you!

Hi John, just did Martial and Lukaku -> Defoe and Kane myself, not sure if Lanzini -> Alli is worth the hit

Hi Gazza, yep not sure on another hit for Alli but equally not too fussed on Lanzini. Really not sure

p.s. Evs has done your move...

First wanted to swap Coutinho and Martial to Alli and Kane but after Klopp comments i think it's wise to hold on to Coutinho for the Newcastle game

same here, reckon he's 60% certain to feature?

worried about studge and coutinho does mitigate that risk a bit

Not 100% sure but I'd imagine he will get 60/75?

Him and Aguero are key to city's success

Swaping Cout out instead of KdB myself this week.

Proper toss up between Kane and Aguero this week.

It comes own to Aguero's possible minutes. City should hope to have the game done by 60-75 and he can come off... after his brace!

Stoke crumbled against Spurs last week when a goal went in. Proper apple crumble.

Spurs and Kane are in top form, have the home game too, no competitions to distract them and a game on Monday - to which they will know how Leicester did on Sunday. If Leicester draw or slip up it will be all systems go for Spuds.

My Rival doesn't have Aguero and will most likelyy captain Kane, I think I'll stick with him on the reasons I just mention + the rival situation

Stoke have conceded 8 goals in their last 2 games.

Aguero has scored 4 in his last two.

      Kun(c).

Maybe in GW37 I will swap Lovren for Smalling or PVA and Aguero to Sturridge

Spent the whole day moving house, now sat in my old neighbours house on my own while they're at Tesco waiting for my father in law to come round to load up a last bit of stuff frim the old house, eating dry bread rolls as the only source of calories available to me.

What's been happening in FFS land?
