Vincent Kompany picks up another injury as Man City stumble at the Champions League semi-final stage. Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele is charged with violent conduct by the FA for his clash with Diego Costa on Monday night, whilst Liverpool’s Divock Origi is still hopeful of returning from injury before the season is out.

Kompany limps out of City loss

A 1-0 loss in the Bernabeu saw City’s dreams of Champions League glory extinguished at the semi-final stage.

Having fielded a second-string outfit at Southampton on Sunday, Manuel Pellegrini made eight changes to last night’s starting line-up. The likes of Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne, Yaya Toure, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and Vincent Kompany were all named in the first XI, though the latter lasted just ten minutes against Madrid before being forced off with a hamstring problem.

After a hugely disappointing performance in which his team managed just a single shot on target – courtesy of De Bruyne – Pellegrini conceded that Kompany will be assessed today after yet another injury setback.

The Scout Says: With Europe no longer a distraction, Pellegrini can now turn his attentions to Sunday’s crucial home encounter with Arsenal. The City manager’s team sheets may have frustrated us in recent weeks – with De Bruyne starting just two of the last five, for example – but considering that they need three points to overtake the Gunners in third, it seems far more likely that the Chilean will roll out his strongest side this weekend. City’s need to go on the offensive to climb back into the automatic Champions League places could be good news for De Bruyne and Aguero owners, then, whilst at the back, Kompany’s potential absence might not be as much of a setback as anticipated – the Etihad side had conceded just two goals in the previous five league matches without their captain prior to the weekend loss at St Mary’s.

Dembele Charged by FA

Mousa Dembele has been retrospectively charged with violent conduct by the FA for an alleged incident with Diego Costa in Monday’s draw at Chelsea. The Spurs midfielder has until 6pm this evening to respond to the charge.

The FA also went on to suggest that, if found guilty, the Belgian could face an extended period on the sidelines:

“Further, it is alleged the player’s behaviour constituted violent conduct in circumstances where the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient.”

The Scout Says: Given the nature of the incident, it seems very likely that Dembele will play no further part in the remainder of the season. Already deprived of Dele Alli’s services due to suspension, Mauricio Pochettino could be set to face former club Southampton without two of his first-choice picks in the centre of the park. Should Dembele be handed the expected ban, our faith in Harry Kane could take a turn for the worse. Alarmingly, Spurs’ top scorer has netted just once in the nine league matches that the Belgian has failed to start this season, compared to 24 strikes in 27 outings with him in the first XI.

Origi hopeful of Reds’ return

Divock Origi has stepped up his recovery from the ankle injury that forced him off during last month’s Merseyside derby against Everton.

Discussing his fitness with the Reds’ official website, the Belgian refused to rule out a return to action before the end of the season:

“It’s progressing well. It’s been ten days now so I try and improve every day and make steps, we just try and [ensure that] I’m back as quick as possible. My goal is to come back as soon as possible and I just want to go back on the pitch. I think it’s possible but you never know.”

The Scout Says: Judging by his comments, it seems likely that Origi will miss the Reds’ upcoming double Gameweek home encounters against Watford and Chelsea. Whilst Liverpool’s team sheets remain impossible to second-guess right now, the Belgian’s continued absence could strengthen Daniel Sturridge’s chances of starts. Sturridge has been named in the starting XI in six of the last seven – scoring off the bench in the other fixture – and if he’s named amongst the subs against Villarreal later tonight, many may well be tempted to take a punt on a player with five goals and an assist in his last seven.

          I didn't actually watch tbh but from reading reviews etc it seems the only decent player was Hart for keeping the score at 1-0 as opposed to the 3 or 4 it could've been

            Neither team showed up.. 3/4 of Madrid's players played well, 1/2 of City's played well. Twas a really bad match.

            Bale, Modric, Ramos, Carvajal,
            Fernandinho, Hart, Clichy.

            were the only ones to impress imo.

              I'm absolutely gutted, went to see Jungle Book last night and before it started corner count was 1-1 over 4.5 first half corners was 5/2 but instead I backed over 8 total corners because of a Twitter tipster I follow regularly who's in good form. Absolutely gutted for myself 6 FH corners 8 FT corners

    Repost
    Taken the hit, may take another but I'm currently unsure.

    Robles (Mignolet)
    Simpson, Clyne, Smalling (Huth, Koscielny)
    Sanchez, Mahrez, Payet, Hazard (Iwobi)
    (TC) Defoe, Carroll, Aguero

    May be swayed by Huth to Martin if Liverpool go through. How does this look??

    Would you play Mignolet over Robles??

    Does a great season in the Premier League always mean you've had a great FPL season?
    Interesting to compare the PFA team of the year against the FPL team of the year (so far):

    PFA:
    DDG;
    Bellerin, Toby, Morgan, Rose;
    Mahrez, Kante, Alli, Payet;
    Vardy,Kane;

    vs

    FPL:
    Gomes;
    Bellerin, Toby, Kos;
    Mahrez, Ozil, Eriksen, Alli;
    Kane, Lukaku, Vardy (Aguero will prob sneak in)

    I wonder if it has ever/will ever match 11/11 for both!

    1. Cradders
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 3 days ago

      I don't think there'll ever be a match of 11/11 because the PFA won't ever select 3 at the back.

      Won't ever is a bit strong but you know what I mean.

        no money is tight unfortunately, which is why i'm tempted to just go with those three.

          Cesc isn't a bad shout, should be involved if Chelsea score, should be nailed on too.

          Alternatively, R.Martin is a good option for 4.2 but not sure if he's worth a hit (I took a hit for him but not sure if you should)

    1 FT, 0.2 banked.

    KdB to Hazard picks itself.

    Who should be my RLC and Kane replacements?

        City looked well off the pace last night IM, I think just the Aguero would do for me. 🙂

          Yup, they were terrible, but KdB still nearly got an assist and nearly played further forward than Kun..

          They'll attack Arsenal at home, different story altogether than their first CL final..

    Would you bring in Carroll for Kane/Kun if your rival (18 points behind) has both Kane & Kun? Or should I leave as it is and cover him?

      I am in the same predicament, was leaning towards Carrol for Kun but last nights performance from him and City has cast doubt. Still undecided but 100% getting Carrol in this week and TC him

    Any word on Mertesacker's injury?

    Sitting tight with Gabriel and hoping for him to get a start in GW38.

    Anyone know what set-pieces KDB and Hazard take for belgium? Thinking a punt on one of them to be the James Rodriguez of the euros and top score

    First proper head-scratcher in a while and thoughts welcome.

    Have Mane (tot), Townsend (villa), Sanchez (city) as SGWers

    Then Payet, Fab, Lukaku, Sturridge, Martial and DGWers

    Currently have Sanchez on the bench. Feel like it's a toss up between him, Mane and Lukaku!

      I personally think Sanchez could have more point potential than Lukaku, even with a double

    Hazard + Redmond + Cresswell + Caroll

    or

    Firmino + Sanchez + Delaney + Kane + 12 points

    Anyone else tempted to play Sanchez over Coutinho/Firmino this GW?

    Not sure which one to keep yet, obviously depends on lineup/result v Dortmund. Can't see either playing 180mins

    Expect the unexpected, other than teams with something to play for, this stage in the season almost anything can happen anyone can play or not play

      It is still better to bet on the entire team united with something to play for, such as avoiding relegation, then to bet on individual mentality vs the rest of the team with nothing to play for. The later could be dragged down by their teammates who do not give a shiat.

    Trying to get my captain decision locked in (let alone whether I triple captain) this week...

    ddg
    Smalling Valencia Fuchs
    Hazard Payet Coutinho Sánchez Townsend
    Sturridge Carroll

    Mignolet Bellerín Long Simspon

    Captain Choices

    A) Valencia NOR (A), WHU (A)
    at least one CS + attacking points, probably an assist in the other

    B) Hazard SUN (A), LIV (A)
    bit of form, other than on here not as many own as you think. We saw how few goals a midfielder actually needs over two games to rack up an immense dgw score and make the c/tc decision remarkabale.

    C) Payet SWA (H), MUN (H)
    Not exactly firing on all cylinders but I'm sure he'd pull apart Swans with assists of assists and I bet he can't wait to put another FK passed DDG

    D) Carroll SWA (H), MUN (H)
    bit of form, has the bit between his teeth in the hunt for a spot on a plane.

    E) Sturridge WAT (H), CHE (H)
    Can be very efficient when on the playing field. Danny gets you goals but a bit of a rotation risk. tempting though.

    F) Townsend Villa(A)
    for larks...

      C or D, but i would say C, based on fact most likely to play more minutes if a safe option and also potential to score, assist, bonus

      B or E could turn out good but minutes the issue maybe E if sub and plays small part only in europa but is a bit of gamble

        Cheers.

        Atm, I'm leaning towards B because of what we saw with Sanchez in his DGW
        But I think D and A will be the most consistent in terms of points.

          good luck, this week and time of season a little bit erratic

          Im not sure of A though as united not so good away from home, but they can suprise
