The second round of group matches conclude with Saturday’s fixtures, as DraftKings managers look to construct eight-man squads from the remaining six nations.

Over in Group E, Belgium are left scrapping for survival following their abject display in the defeat to Italy. They must now find a way past the Republic of Ireland who head into that encounter having earned a point in their opener against Sweden.

Belgium must surely seek a victory, which should lead to a more open affair, drawing the sting from the attacking talent on show. Belgium’s teamsheet looks difficult to predict, however, with DraftKings managers having to shop late should they look to Belgium for goals.

There are two matches in Group F with Austria facing an identical scenario to the Belgians. They suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Hungary and now head into an enthralling clash with Portugal. Fernando Santos’ men were held by Iceland, with Cristiano Ronaldo contained; they cannot afford to be similarly subdued against the Austrians.

Iceland take their point earned against Portugal into their meeting with Hungary in what looks set to be a cagey affair. The Hungarians can seal passage to the knock-outs with a victory, although Iceland’s disciplined rearguard is likely to be in evidence once again.

We’ve studied the likely narrative of the three fixtures and sifted the assets on offer to provide our DraftKings picks to help steer your selections ahead of Saturday’s contests.

Vierinha – Portugal, – $4400
Deployed as a winger in his Porto days, he’s now recognised as a talented right-back for Wolfsburg and his country. Vierinha came through Portugal’s disappointing performance against Iceland with some credit, raiding down the flank to provide 12 crosses, 10 of which came from open play. Along with Raphael Guerreiro on the left, we expect his service from the flanks to be a factor again in the crunch meeting with Austria.

Nani – Portugal, $9300
While Ronaldo registered ten efforts on goal against Iceland, nine were from outside the box, leaving it to Nani to provide the most potent threat. He notched Portugal’s goal and all five of his goal attempts arrived from inside the penalty area, with three hitting the target. With four crosses supplied, Nani enjoyed a profitable evening and will head into the clash with Austria looking to emerge from Ronaldo’s shadow once more.

David Alaba – Austria – $7500
The Bayern Munich man did his upmost to drag Austria through their defeat to Hungary. He fired in six efforts on goal in the 2-0 defeat – no other midfielder registered more goal attempts in the first round of matches. That continued the trend seen in qualifying when Alaba, deployed as a box-to-box midfielder, provided more goal attempts per minute than any team-mate, whilst also ranking second for crosses. Alaba will surely be a key figure as Austria seek to salvage their Euro 2016 campaign.

Attila Fiola – Hungary, – $4000
Iceland mustered just four efforts on goal against Portugal and, while they could show more ambition against the Hungarian’s, investment in the Magyar back-line looks viable. Fiola just edges out fellow full-back Tamas Kadar in our reckoning as he demonstrated more intent to get forward from right-back, both in the win over Austria and in the warm-up matches heading into the tournament. Fiola also tends to win more tackles and played as a striker in his youth, so could even deliver an unlikely goal.

Robbie Brady – Republic of Ireland, – $5000
A mainstay of our Premier League DraftKings line-ups, Brady continues to translate his impressive points output to the international stage. The Norwich City man contributed ten crossed balls in the 1-1 stalemate with Sweden, continuing a trend that saw him supply 93 crosses in qualifying – ranking third for midfielders overall. Classified as defender in DraftKings, his supply line looks pivotal to the Republic of Ireland’s chances against Belgium, with set-pieces likely to play their part.

DraftKings contests for Saturday’s matches are now available, including a $3 entry “Striker” with a $10k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I mean that if you end up with 5 defs, that means you bought defenders who scored well, which appears to be a key move right now. I bought cheapos, so I will definitely end up 3-4-3 because I have poor defenders. People who bought good defenders end up with 5-4-1 because those are the guys that scored.

Most people tend to play safe in a case where there is 50:50 chance. You are different.

95% of people would opt. against a bet where you put in a €5 and have a half chance of getting nothing back or a half chance of €10

    1) Vermaelen (Sweden)

I just have the most free time atm so can do plenty of other stuff whilst browsing the site at odd times. It's pretty quiet compared to FPL season tbh so not much needs removing etc.

I argued on the previous page that a GW3 WC has the advantage of allowing you to stock in some 4.0 cheapos. But I begin to wonder if that is right. I can't look at player prices now, but I seem to recall that there are a lot of cheapos who just have no chance of playing, who are on decent teams that will likely progress. Am I remembering right? Are there some 4.0 cheapos on likely round-of-16 teams that can be bought when doing our unlimited R-O-16 teams?

I might try that, but the more I think about it, I have no doubt I can have a decent complement of cheapos for the QFs, which is the only time that transfers are meaningfully limited.

This is pretty much right, but also the concern is that the kicked-out teams will have all the cheapos, so that come R-o-16 unlimited transfers time we will not have access to many 4.0 players (although it is right that if you have 4.0 cheapos right now, and don't let go of them, you're in pretty good shape).

What do we feel about the teams with 6 points and their key players in matchday 3?

Is a possibility to wildcard 15 players with something to play for and then revert back to the big boys once the knockout wildcard arrives?

I've not actually looked at who would play who. Is it safe to say that the new rules make the last round important for most teams?

Pretty much. Only Ukraine is out atm. Top 2 in every group would have killed a few others.

So from what I read the runners up will play fellow runner ups and 2 play winners. Rest of the winners play 3rd placed teams

That is exactly what I want to do, but see above. I think this could be the time to WC, and the only reason not to now is that one might miss out on cheap bench fodder. If there are likely to be cheap 4.0 defs and 4.5 mids available when picking the R of 16 teams, then there seems to be no reason not to WC right now.

Does anyone else use 'newsnow' to check on the latest transfer rumours for their team? It's a handy site. That and Twitter are my favourites. How times have changed from the old teletext 'Gossip and Rumours' page (think it was 328 on BBC).

I still read the gossip page. Admittedly it is on the BBC website now or red button.

Remember waiting through 12 pages and tehn it missed a page and you had to wait through them all again. Aaargh!

I remember that pain, when we got a better telly when I was a bit older, it had a 'hold' button, would freeze the page, my dad and I were well chuffed. The good old days.

I remember when we got our first colour telly. So exciting! It really improved the snooker.

Our first VHS had a lead for the remote control. Oh times have changed

Hey guys! So today i´m sitting on 134 points and place myself at 312 or something, pretty good and i´m happy about that.

Thinking of WC'ing after tomorrows game and i wonder how spain played today, missed it.

Who are the teams to go for in the knockout stage? Usually i go for Germany, but i haven't been conviced at allt. France are okey and i like Croatia aswell. And then there is Spain... What do you guys think and how will you do? 🙂

      (a) I think you should be giving us advice, not the other way 'round.

      (b) I would not select entirely by teams, I would select by form players. Most teams will get through, so the question is who will score. The teams you have identified are good bets, but I would be looking at the guys who are most likely to score. I won't list them because, frankly, I don't know. Hamsik? Morata? Stancu? Bale?

      1. Thomas M.

        a) I almost knew this was coming, haha! And I´ve been pretty lucky with the (C) on payet's etc. My team does not look so much different from anyone elses on here.

        Sommer / Patricio
        Schär / Juanfran / Hector / Dier / Rami
        Özil / Peresic / Alli / Payet / Dzemaili
        Muller / Morata / Giroud

        b) And as you say, yeah, players who most likely are going to score are the ones to go for ofc. I think Hamsik / Bale are 2 of those who are going to fire like maniacs next game.

What's common sense in terms of wc-ing for the next round of games? Buy only players that have something to fight for or mix it with those who are already in 1/8. Got no clue atm:/

        Berisha - Patricio
        Hector - Bonucci* - Howedes/Walker - Guerreiro - Jed something (Polish guy)
        Payet - Kroos - Perisic - Alaba - Draxler/KDB
        Ronaldo/Sturridge - Bale - Milik

This is basically the base of it. Bonucci might be rested next game since he's on a YC so will probably change him. Maybe the Polish lad too. Depends on whether I opt for Draxler + Ronaldo or KDB + Sturridge.

Very possible this. Extremely dissapointed with ongoing situation regarding "fans" and their behaviour. Is this what football in Europe has come to? I wouldn't even risk bringing my kid to a EURO football match so he could watch his idols play. How humiliating and disgraceful is that?:/

I agree. Why do internationals bring the nutters out? League football in the UK is pretty much safe but come international time there is always trouble involving the "fans".

Obviously it is a major issue in eastern Europe as well

It's safe cause they are controlled and law applies. In foreign countries they come in groups and they do not care at all. In eastern Europe that is pretty much the main problem. Russia, Poland, Serbia, Croatia etc.

Lack of organization is also an issue at least when we talk about this Euro.
