England left it late to defeat Wales, Northern Ireland excelled to collect a first tournament victory in 34 years and Poland and Germany laboured to a goalless draw. Here’s how yesterday’s Euro 2016 games panned out.

England 2 Wales 1

Bold half-time changes by Roy Hodgson ignited England’s Euro campaign, with substitutes Jamie Vardy (7.0) and Daniel Sturridge (7.5) earning the Three Lions their first ever come-from-behind tournament victory.

England dominated possession (71%), passing (505-206) and attempts (20-8) but walked off at half-time a goal down courtesy of a second free-kick strike of the tournament from Gareth Bale (10.5) – a shot Joe Hart (5.5) should have kept out.

Wales held out for ten minutes after the break before Vardy – owned by 17% of Uefa managers – put away a close range chance and the rest was wave after wave of England pressure until the influential Sturridge bundled home from a Dele Alli (6.5) assist.

The result and the performance puts Harry Kane’s immediate future in the first XI in doubt. The 8.5-priced forward in the official Uefa game had just two attempts and created one chance in a quiet first half, with Wayne Rooney (9.5) even taking over Kane’s corner duties.

The Manchester United man is now truly settled into his midfield role, and he was the match-leader for chances created (6) and crosses (10) and only Sturridge and Bale had more attempts than his three.

Bale, with four attempts, was again Wales’ only true attacking threat, aided and abetted by Neil Taylor (5.0), who put in six crosses.

But Taylor spent much of the match being pushed back by arguably England’s player of the tournament so far, right back Kyle Walker (5.0). The Tottenham defender put in seven crosses, created one chance and fired in a shot for excellent DraftKings returns.

Club mate Danny Rose (5.5), with four crosses and five clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) was another solid DraftKings performer. As was the tireless Aaron Ramsey (7.5), who won four tackles, put in six crosses, created a chance and had one attempt himself.

By the end of the match, England were fielding four of their five Uefa game-listed forwards. The squad is looking strong, their destiny is in their own hands and they have controlled both of their matches to date. Now looks to be the time to invest strongly in Hodgson’s men, with Sturridge, who had four goal attempts in just 45 minutes of action, and Vardy looking stronger picks than Kane on current form.

As for Wales, they came for a point and came agonisingly close to gaining it. Another draw, against Russia, should be enough to see them through, but it is still difficult to look beyond Bale and Ramsey for consistent Fantasy returns.

Ukraine 0 Northern Ireland 2

Hodgson wasn’t the only manager to be bold on Day 7 of the European Championships, Michael O’Neill making five changes from the Northern Ireland team that lost tamely to Poland.

The big call was the benching of key striker Kyle Lafferty (7.0), with Conor Washington (5.0) taking his place in a side geared up for victory against Ukraine.

Northern Ireland pressed high and played with real pace throughout, forcing Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Pyativ into five saves. His counterpart, Michael McGovern (4.5) made four.

No team scored more qualifying goals from set-pieces than Northern Ireland’s nine, so it was no surprise when Gareth McAuley (5.0) tucked away a far post header from an excellent Oliver Norwood (5.5m) delivery to open the scoring in the second half.

Chances then came and went for both sides before Niall McGinn (6.0) pounced on a rebound from Stuart Dallas’s (5.0) shot to seal the deal late in stoppage time.

As the side’s principal free kick taker, Norwood remains an attractive option both in the official Uefa game and DraftKings. As well as his assist, he created a further chance, put in two crosses (both successful) and had one attempt.

But the true star of Northern Ireland’s tournament to date is centre half Jonny Evans (5.0). After taming Robert Lewandowski in the first match, Evans was a driving force at both ends of the pitch against Ukraine.

He crossed twice and created two chances going forward and managed ten clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) – only goalscorer McAuley had more – to feature strongly in DraftKings.

Midfielder Yevhen Konoplyanka (7.5) was Ukraine’s main threat, firing in four attempts, setting up two chances and putting in a match-leading eight crosses.

Just the one Northern Ireland player is currently owned by more than 1% of official game managers – and he’s not played a single minute yet. Will Grigg (5.0) is the man and his popularity presumably rests in that song.

More managers might be tempted to invest in Northern Ireland players after such a fine display, but they do face Germany in their final group match.

Ukraine are now as good as out, and whatever side is put out to face Poland is unlikely to get many Fantasy backers.

Poland 0 Germany 0

The first goalless draw of Euro 2016 suited both sides, but it was Poland left to rue what might have been.

Arkadiusz Milik (7.5), the match-winner against Northern Ireland, had two great chances and fluffed them both during a second half when the Poles came out of their shell and stretched their opponents.

Germany still out-shot their opponents 16-7 but never looked like scoring, and although Manuel Neuer (6.0) didn’t have a save to make all match, back-to-back clean sheets flatters a defence that could well struggle against more progressive and ruthless opponents.

Matts Hummels (6.5) returned from injury, replacing Shkodran Mustafi (5.0) at centre half, but Jonas Hector (5.5) was the stand-out performer in their back line – for his threat going forward.

Germany relied almost exclusively on their left flank in attack, with Hector completing a match-leading 11 crosses (although none were successful) and creating one chance. In comparison, Hector’s fellow full-back, Benedikt Howedes (5.0), only managed two crosses.

Toni Kroos (7.0) backed up his influential performance against Ukraine with another busy display (three chances created, eight crosses, three shots) that earned him solid DraftKings returns, but Tomas Muller (10.5) again failed to live up to his price tag in a misfiring German front four. The Bayern Munich man managed a solitary goal attempt, which was off target.

Another big ticket striker, Robert Lewandowski (11.5), was also off the pace. In two matches, the Bayern Munich star has been starved of service, reduced to just five penalty area touches and two shots, neither of which have been on target.

As the second-most expensive striker in the official Uefa game, Lewandowski is surely in the last chance saloon. Muller is not far behind him in the queue.

Poland should ease past a deflated Ukraine in their final match, and Kamil Grosicki (7.0) turned in a decent enough performance (three chances created, three crosses and one attempt) to merit consideration.

The Germans will find a buoyant Northern Ireland a handful and will need to put in a far better attacking display if they are to prevail.

It was a great result for them and could have been even better as well if Milik hadn't missed that sitter. They definitely looked a lot happier than the Germans at the final whistle though.

Yeah, Lewa was right, they could actually regret not winning it because they had better chances than Germany. But that's also because they kept Germany effectively away from good scoring chances, which is a big positive. I got the feeling that they were just purely happy because of having sentiment of having performed really well as underdogs.

At the risk of stirring a hornets nest of naysayers, I'd like to get some thoughts on those playing DraftKings. I made the move from single entries to enter three squads in yesterday's matches and managed to place with all three earning some profit.

With the stats available and a bit of time to put squads together, I'm really enjoying it. I'm still finding the emphasis on crosses a little jarring, although it does provide a useful starting point when compiling a squad.

Would be interested in the views of those playing it for the Euros or who have played it.

I got a placing as well this week. As a stat man these sort of games that go a bit beyond just goals, assists and clean sheets certainly appeal. Goals and assists still rule though - that's key for me, as they are the toughest to predict.

I'm finding that you need to get a base squad with attacking full-backs and set-pieces in midfield and then just get the goalscorers. With yesterday's contests I set up three teams, each with different pairings up front. Seemed to work out for me, as I would have never gone with Bale had I opted for just one squad entry.

This may not be the sort of thing you're after, but I find the whole UI really overcomplicates what is actually quite a simple game. It looks like they've taken a poker site's layout and tried to fit fantasy football in there.

I also think the stats-based points aren't nearly subtle enough. If it was UFPL style, with some weighting towards quality of chance creation etc, it would make sense, but just bulk rewarding crosses doesn't seem right.

Are you using the app or desktop? I've not tried the latter as yet.

Your point on the stats are interesting - do you think that there are too few factored in?

Desktop (FPL is mainly a work-time pursuit for me)

I think it's less the amount factored in and more the way they are factored in. As a big fan of UFPL, it feels strange just rewarding individual crosses, and not factoring in other chance creation, or making a distinction between key passes, big chances created and just getting the ball on a big man's head.

Not really what I was asking - I was looking for feedback from those who have played or who are playing but, of course, you're entitled to your views.

Daily Fantasy Sports has the potential to have a big impact on Fantasy Football in the UK as it has in the US - it's not really something we could ignore or would want to ignore.

Yes, it has that potential for sure. And they and FanDuel were bound to identify FFS as a prime "partner" as they expand their operations into Europe. I just hope you have informed yourself about their business model and asked yourself the question. And that's all I'll say about it. Jonty has my email if you want a fuller explanation.

Do you think that FPL will get involved with it? As an American I've seen plenty about their business practices so Ruth's point is well taken, and I was always bemused that people weren't quicker on the uptake to recognize it for what it is -- they were "shocked, shocked to find gambling in Daily Fantasy" -- but the potential for a reputable gambling model (if such a thing exists) to come in and find a way to satisfy people's craving for a vested interest in the matches is certainly there.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Captaincy stick or twist

Time is really running out, especially for those like me that backed a German attacker or midfielder.

Who is in the frame for the captaincy today? For me Perisic has the underlying stats and fixture. He's my main man, with a last ditch move to Alaba tomorrow if he fails. I have faith though in the Croatian.

Any armband successes yesterday. This is a particular good opportunity for McAuley captainers to brag? You deserve it.

Oddly though the stats indicated that he would do well. It is entirely possible that an eagle eyed stat merchant who spotted the high number of goals NI score from set pieces and the high number by McAuley especially would have taken a punt.

Hats off to those that did.

Oh yeah he's no doubt one of NI's biggest threats, that's why I was looking at him before the competition started, they aim for his head and he has a good record!

They were very disappointing vs Poland however and offered nothing going forward (as well as conceding a pretty easy goal to Milik) so anyone who gambled on them turning it around and beating a Ukraine team that gave Germany a good go, has some serious gonads.

Ibrahimovic for me, mainly through lack of options. Forwards aren't great captain options in this format, they need to score twice (or a goal/assist) to get a good points score. The lack of BPs really favours defenders and midfielders.

I will probably end up on Alaba tomorrow. I have good hopes in his case.

Yep. Mids rule in this format. Even a goal for a striker is not enough for the captaincy. A goal and an assist from a midfielder, or an assist and clean sheet from a defender look to be the best captaincy bets.

          • 11 Years

A goal and CS for a mid = 8 (Payet). That's a tolerable captain score. When I eventually wildcard (probably not till the R16) it will be the midfield I will focus on for sure, even at the expense of having a cheap, non-playing striker if need be.

If I've read the rules right you get unlimited transfers anyway in r16. best time to wildcard is next match day or later.

Payet top of my list too. His price will rise, plus he's a far, far, far better FRA captaincy option than Giroud.

So far haven't probably missed points for it, though. I likely would have had Perisic instead of Modric, and Srna in the place of someone else who also got me a CS.

It's only that their performance promised really good, but unless they start to score too, I've got little to complain about.

And anyway, I made my final decision myself, on basis of the article I linked (and others like that) - but I only searched for them because of you! 😡

So subbing in Gonul from Turkey.. Would you sub him in for..

    A) Muller (2 points) and play 442
    B) Ozil (2 points) and play 433

I'm sure I don't really need to reiterate this but it is of the utmost importance.

            Makes absolutely no difference.

Subbed out Konoplyanka in the end as he failed my expectations so badly. Muller is a good leader and should add to the team's chemistry so I'll leave him in.. Candreva is sure to get a goal with 2-point-Thomas barking at him.

So Perisic vs Alba(spain def) is the main dilemma today for most

    - I think Alba could do virtually nothing and let the midfield dominate and get a cleanie.(high chance)

    - While Perisic needs to attack continuously to get returns against a very defensive CZE side who will park the bus

Imo Alba is safer bet for those who dont have a player lastday. Thoughts?

There's safe with a Spanish defender or go for glory for Perisic. I'm risking Perisic I think it's a game at the end of the day

Two options to captain today after successive flops:

    A) DDG
    B) Malito

My thinking is DeGea is likely to equal or outscore Milito with a clean sheet more likely than anything more than 1 goal from Milito.
...BUT if that happens I'll be gambling this time tomorrow and giving the armband to KDB in the hope he will outscore DeGea's six.
...SO I might as well gamble that Milito will get a brace or a goal & assist.

What are the thoughts from the helpful FFS advisors this morning?
