The quarter-finals stage of Euro 2016 conclude this evening as France and Iceland go head-to-head in the Stade de France.

After falling behind to early spot-kicks last time out, both sides chalked up 2-1 comeback wins over Republic of Ireland and England rrspectively, though it’s fair to say that Les Bleus are firm favourites for the 8pm clash.

Bearing in mind that Iceland’s average of 28.9% possession is less than any team in the tournament, we can expect France to dominate proceedings tonight as their opponents sit back and soak up the pressure.

Didier Deschamps’ troops have registered more than double the number of attempts on goal (75 to 31) as their opponents, though the hosts have managed just 22 shots on target to the Scandinavians’ 14. Indeed, Iceland have matched France’s six goals for the tournament so far thanks to an eye-catching 19.4% conversion rate – the highest of any side in Euro 2016.

At the back, the numbers again lean towards the French. Iceland have conceded an effort every 4.8 minutes – that’s quicker than any other team – and have allowed their opponents 79 attempts on goal to France’s 30.

Despite conceding just four times, then, the underdogs face a tough task to upset the form book yet again and clinch a place in Thursday’s semi-final against Joachim Low’s World Champions.

Draxler imo, more advanced. They should revert back to a 4-2-3-1, even if Gomez wasn't injured, Draxler was expected to start. This increases the chances even more so almost certain.

Pretty nailed on with 5 of my transfers. My last one I'm torn with.

    a) I have a choice of getting Hennesey or Patricio as I own Neuer.

    b) Upgrade a non playing defender. No budget restraints

    c) Ditch the suspended Ramsey, again I can afford pretty much anyone

Random question for the stat heads. If I were to average around 50% clean sheets for all my defenders in FPL is that a good number?

I really want to break the top 10k this year so I'm playing with stats to see if I can predict future results more accurately.

Not a stat head but I would say whatever you get whether that or not is good is subjective to what other people score.

50% looks decent for sure. Every 2 GWs with 3 CS looks decent. If you can manage close to 1 in 2 in your GKs then your defence is doing the job.

I think, generally speaking, 2 clean sheets a GW is a pretty good result. The key then is select defenders with higher potential for assist, goals and BAPs (i.e. Dann, Clyne, Ivanovic, etc.)

      • 11 Years

Sounds pretty good, but as others have mentioned, it depends where they come from. Almost all serious players will presumably have defenders from the teams that are getting clean sheets. Like everyone having Alderweireld etc.

Just been thinking about Dort's post above.

Do we think Mourinho will bring THE BUS to Old Trafford. I can see them developing some defensive resolve finally, Mou is the man and they have / will continue to bring in the right personnel.

I reckon the top 6 defensive teams this year will be:

    United
    Spurs
    Everton
    Palace
    Brom
    Stoke

Nope ... I don't really know why but they weren't great last year and I think it's their people. Conte might bring the 3-5-2 formation but I'm not sure they have the CBs to achieve this. I can see them banging in more goals with 2 strikers and a loaded midfield, but not sure about their backline. Happy for them to prove me wrong, but I won't be starting with a Chelsea defender for the first time in years. Unless, of course, they sign some seriously hot defenders.

    If I use my 6 T's I get this:
    (Bold are new players)
    Patricio, Llloris
    HECTOR, GUERRERO, Rami, Umiti, Meunier
    SANCHES, Payet, OZIL, GOTZE, Draxler
    Greizmann, MULLER, Ronaldo

What do you think? I still have 2.1 in bank so can get another German defender over Guerrero

Not sure on Ozil, Draxler and Gotze ... and I think Ozil is a must. I'd lose Gotze for Pogba and maybe switch Muller to Bale

Cream rises to the top, I think Ozil is hitting his straps after the team has coasted thus far. I think with Gomez out and Muller out of form he'll be pivotal to them scoring ... he has been getting in good spots but just can't find the ball. Against quality opposition I think he steps up and, personally, can see him getting busy for the last 2 games (yes I think Germany will make it through).

I agree and that's one player I'd be getting in to replace Hazard and KDB. However, it's strong French attack vs strong German defense. I think France will possibly outshoot there opponent.

    Def : 3.3 ppg

        hello TM

I have a feeling that the top teams were actually the ones who had better defensive returns than in the other positions. So i'm seriously considering a defence heavy start in GW1, similar to that well-performing dead team last season (sharonne or something).

What do you feel about that?

It all comes down tho the "cost" of that defense. If you're not able to bring in the big gun forwards or mids when they fire because you're over-invested in the backline then it might not work out that well.

agreed. but very often I held onto more expensive mids/forwards in hope that a big score or form was imminent, instead of switching to the defs who were doing well.

I know this is different to the point I raised earlier but it revolves around me idea that while everyone focuses on the in-form attackers, most pple ignore defence in favour of getting more attackers who are points-imminent

That defence was great for a dead team. Seeing you could have got Daniels in when he was firing as well, scoring well in defence looks easy in hindsight.

yea. predicting those defenders will be the tough part. Contrary to the logic that the 'big teams' tighten up after December, i'm hoping they remain relatively tighter throughout the season.

Irrespective of attacking points, my best weeks last season was when Butland got the hauls or I had multi-cs. I somehow feel this is where the pot of gold lies 😀

Butland was great and hurt me plenty. If the budget was tighter, he would have made the team with Elliot.

I usually go very top heavy with my teams and splurge on the midfield and offense. I think this year I'll be looking for more of a balance, especially with Chelsea defense looking to be pure gold. My main musts for next season are KDB, Aguero, and minimum of double Chelsea defense.

Easily. Don't think United will be the solid defense people are portraying them to be.

why do u think so? Both Conte and Mou are defensively sound. Mou had done it before in England. Conte won't have the defensive technicians like he did at Juve/Italy NT. As of now, United's defenders and keeper are a lot better than chelsea's. If conte gets a major signing back there, then I would change my opinion but until then I'd put my bet on United

Conte's got a superior midfield. Mourinho currently doesn't have that. If Mourinho signs a proper CDM, his system will work better. Conte's system can already be implemented with the current Chelsea squad.

Schneiderlin was under-utilised last season and with Blind moving back to CDM, there will be enough cover.
I seriously doubt if Cahill, Ivan and a still injured Zouma can pull off conte's system. Azpi should fit, but chelsea needs a signing or 2. Right now those 3 aren't good enough. Nor is terry

Because they already were not great in defence and now they have a defensively astute manager?

            Great logic.

Not even that. The midfield in front of them is weak defensively. Get some signings and then you might be on to something. Right now that midfield is asking too much of the back four, a back four that already looks pretty flimsy.

I totally agree with TEST EAGLES. Happened to me and I backed Italy and Belgium. I got the points and still ahead by 34 points in thd mini league. But I'll have to take a hit to cover 9 players not playing 🙁

Its proven taking hits is not good with these rules. Get a balance so you know you can play 11 in the final or with the lead you have you can get away with 9 fielded players. not a good idea to leave yourself exposed unless you were chasing.

If anybody is interested a comparison of table disparity (how much higher a team is than its opposition on the table) and clean sheets.

A -8 means that team is 8 places higher on the table than its opposition. 4 means the team is 4 places lower on the table than its opposition

I tried is using the final table rankings for 15/16 as well as using 14/15 rankings. I imagine

Okay so I'm 13 points behind first in a league with friends winner takes all

I know the leader won't change much with his team with no wildcard he is loaded with Portuguese/French players a few German players and bale/Ramsey/henessey

I taking a punt with a solid welsh base really the only chance I have of catching him

I feel like loading up with welsh defenders hoping for a CS and throwing in Robson Kanu and Ledley/King
