Footballing order was restored as France put five past an Iceland side who exited the tournament with their heads held high – and two more goals under their belt.

France 5 Iceland 2

A fluent and clinical display from the Euro 2016 hosts ended Iceland’s fairytale, with Antoine Griezmann (10.0) the stand-out performer.

The Atletico Madrid striker, owned by 44% of official Uefa game managers, scored one and set up two more as France ran riot in the first half and he ended the match with a match-high five chances created and two attempts.

Griezmann set up Paul Pogba (8.5), from a corner, and Dmitri Payet (8.1) before smartly chipping home when set free by an Olivier Giroud (8.5) flick. The Arsenal man also grabbed two goals, assisted by Blaise Matuidi (7.0) and Payet.

Iceland couldn’t cope with France’s attacking verve, but were far from outclassed when pushing forward themselves.

Allowed a tournament-high 38.6% possession, they created 11 chances to France’s 14 and had 11 attempts to the hosts’ 15.

Two of those attempts led to goals, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson finishing from a fine Gylfi Sigurdsson ball and Birkir Bjarnason heading home an Ari Freyr Skulason cross.

Although Iceland scored in every match at Euro 2016, French coach Didier Deschamps will be concerned that his team defended so poorly, the suspensions for N’Golo Kante (5.5) and Adil Rami (5.1) only partially explaining that laxity.

Les Bleus were superb going forward after Deschamps decided to retain the 4-2-3-1 formation he employed in the second-half of the 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland last time around. Kante’s absence allowed Pogba to take up a more withdrawn role in the double-pivot, while Griezmann again flourished thanks to his central support berth behind Giroud.

Deschamps has not been frightened to make some big calls in this tournament, and he has a couple more to make before it’s over.

Should Kante return for the semi-final against Germany, the France manager has a real dilemma in the centre of the park and with Pogba back in form, it may be Blaise Matuidi is the man to drop out. On the right, Sissoko is surely set to return to the bench for Thursday’s match but Les Bleus boss will be reluctant to shift Griezmann back onto the flank after his recent output through the centre.

The one consolation for Deschamps is that his German counterpart, Joachim Low, has even more issues, with Mats Hummels suspended and Mario Gomez injured, whilst both Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger are doubtful in the centre of the park.

Mandanda is a brilliant French keeper who Palace signed. Great signing and great pick imo (unless he is priced excessively).

Redmond could be an interesting pick from the Saints with some nice home fixtures.

          Dunno about Oscar.

I think Redmond might be a good shout at around 5.5 as a squad player. I wouldn't go near Oscar or Giroud. With new players I prefer to see how they bed in before throwing them in. I'd go with Payet or Firmino ahead of Mkhitaryan to begin with.

    Zlatan.

What is his expected price? More than 10.5 mill?
What striker other than Aguero will be more than him?
What will his expected game time be? Is he likely to be rested on occasion for Rashford? If so will those rests likely come in the tasty fixtures at home to lesser opposition?

Decent FPL budget mid, but Hull's fixtures are pretty bad to start with. They begin to ease around GW8. I think Gray is one I'll be strongly considering. One of Friend or Ayala definitely too.

Have a 7 point lead in my work ML, and hoping to keep it that way. Looking at the following team for the semi's, would appreciate any advice (potential transfers in are in bold):

    Lloris, Patricio
    BOATENG, Hector, Sagna, WILLIAMS, Meunier
OZIL, Draxler, KROOS, Payet, RENATO SANCHES
    Bale, GIROUD, Griezy

I could take Taylor instead of Williams to free up cash for Ronaldo instead of Giroud, but given Ronaldo's form and the fact Giroud usually goes on small runs of goalscoring form I'm leaning more towards the Frenchman.

      Maybe Kroosbto Pogba?

      1. Badstreet
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

Hmm, might be a good shout. So that would leave me with:

        France - 6
        Germany - 4
        Portugal - 2
        Wales - 2

With Meunier already out, I could potentially be down 9 players for the final (before using FTs) not including suspensions, worth the risk? I guess we won't really need a bench for the final anyway.

Speaking of suspensions, am I right in thinking that yellow cards have been cleared now?

Here's my team for the semi finals (players with stars next to their name are players I already have). Players in comma's I will transfer in with my six free transfers. I am 0.1 short of getting Pogba instead of Draxler. Will check line ups to see if guierrero is starting. What do you think?

    Lloris* (Patricio)
    Rami* Hector* Chester* (Guierrero) (Boateng)
    Payet* Kroos* Sanches* (Ozil) (Draxler)
    Greizmann* Ronaldo* (Bale)

              ?

You need to understand the football world. Of course from our perspective, no player deserves this much for playing a game of football. But in context with other players, I think Mkhitaryan deservedly is receiving 200k a week (hopefully time will prove that right)

Well first off, you have to pull in players somehow and with no CL it's all about the wages.

Also, wages in the PL teams in general are ridiculous, especially the bigger ones. Most players who play at the typical big clubs are on at least £100k, the real figures being closer to £150k - 200k. It is how it has gone. I'm not surprised at all Mkhitaryan is on that wage, pretty much the region I expected tbh.

      1. Pariße
        • 11 Years

I was thinking more of around 130k for Mkitaryan, but yeah...good point there, United has to attract them with money, no CL to offer.

        1. Somalion
          • 16 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

Yeah but when you look at someone like Ashley Young on £110k a week you get a fair idea of just how high the wages are. Mkhitaryan at £26 million would no doubt have attracted numerous suitors, so sometimes you've just got to stump up the extra money to get them in.

    Bale – Ronaldo – Greizmann

Appreciate Ramsey won’t play but I will bench him and can see them sneaking in. Also we get 6 FT before the next round right?

    So that’s 4 Portugal – 3 Wales (2 with keeping Ramsey) – 4 Germany and 4 France…

Says the person who's finding 0.1 to fit in Pogba instead of Draxler and then saying Germany will boss possession.

I'd rather go double Welsh defence than Have Lloris and France Def. Think you dint read my post properly. I can't change Mueller & Giroud. And honestly I'm happy with them as differentials. Mueller is the only striking option Germany have left & Giroud had a pretty good game.

    This:

    Neuer Hennesey

    JED Umtiti Hector Guerriero MEUNIER

    KDB HAZARD Kroos Payet RAMSEY

    MILIK Griezmann Bale

    To this?

    Hennesey Neuer

    CEDRIC Umtiti Hector Guerriero FONTE

    SANCHES OZIL DRAXLER Payet Kroos

    CR7 Bale Griezmann

Anyone else going for full Portuguese defence ?

Or is it better to spread the risk with one or two Welsh defenders. Honestly cant see Wales keeping a cleanie.

Risky. We see what happened when people doubled or trebled up on french defence against Iceland and Belgian defence against Wales. As these are the semi-finals teams are very motivated to score. Doubling up is far more sensible. Yes would spread the risk. If it is 0-0 after 90 mins still another 30 to play making a cleanie even more unlikely

I'm doubling up on Wales and Portugal - I reckon that game will have less goals in it than France v Germany.

I have no choice but to keep Lloris and Rami as they were already in my team and would need to take a four point hit to get rid. Think I'll double up on portugal defence and stick with chester as my one welsh defender

well had a great start. have slightly dipped in last couple of rounds.

in a close ml battle with 4 others who are around 2-3 points above and below.

hopefully i could seal the ml win 🙂

    this is my current squad.
    Hennessey DDG*
    Meunier* Pazdan* Giachherini* Guirreiro Hector
    Ramsey* Payet KDB* Hazard* Blaszczykowski*
    Bale Gomez* Griezmann

i am Thinking that i will not use my fts on defense since clean sheets are hard to come by at this stage of tournament. so I Plan to use most of my FTs on attackers.I plan to hang onto Ramsey incase Wales go through. I am Planning to do these transfers
    KDB to ozil
    hazard to pogba
    Blasz to Sanches
    Gomez to Ronaldo
    Giachherini to Williams
    Meunier to Sagna

    What do You think??
