Our series of summer articles, focussing on Fantasy assets who underperformed in the previous season, gets underway with a look at Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

In spite of a hugely disappointing 2015/16 campaign, there’s no disputing the winger’s position as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) royalty.

Year on year, the Blues midfielder had upped his output after arriving at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2012/13 season – totals of 190, 202 and 233 points were indicative of his spot as one of the most explosive, and reliable, options for our five-man midfields.

Until last season.

Hampered by a hip problem, Hazard struggled for consistency of both output and pitch time.

The Belgian netted just once in the first 34 matches – courtesy of a deflected effort against Arsenal in Gameweek 6 – and toppled off our radars as the Blues’ title defence fell to pieces, ultimately leading to the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Although the arrival of Guus Hiddink helped steady the ship and transformed the likes of Willian as a viable route into the Chelsea midfield, Hazard failed to find his best form until the tail end of the season.

Four goals in the final five fixtures was too little, too late, though served a timely reminder of his talents as we headed into the close-season.

Delving into the data, Hazard’s creativity more or less stayed the same last term. Despite earning just five FPL assists, an average of 35.3 minutes per key pass was more or less identical to his 2014/15 numbers, where he teed up a team-mate every 35.6 minutes and created more chances (99) than any player in the top-flight.

The Belgian’s drop in goal threat was another matter altogether. Second only to Alexis Sanchez in midfield when in came to finding the net in 2014/15 (14 strikes to 16), he produced an effort every 45.2 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign.

Last time around, Hazard fired an attempt every 64.8 minutes over his 31 appearances (25 starts) all season. Managing just 14 shots on target over the entire campaign, it’s fair to say that the winger has significant room for improvement as the Blues look to regroup under new manager Antonio Conte.

The Prospects

Having dropped in price to 10.0 in FPL, there’s no doubt that Hazard looks an enticing option for the upcoming campaign.

With Diego Costa seemingly edging towards the exit door and Michy Batshuayi settling into his new surrounds, the winger has already claimed 12% ownership – making him the tenth most popular midfielder to date.

Certainly, the Belgian could hardly have asked for a better start to life under Conte at the weekend.

Emerging from the bench to score twice in a half-hour cameo against Real Madrid, he was intriguingly handed a role through the middle in the new manager’s 4-2-4 formation and, according to the Italian, it’s a spot he could take up in the campaign ahead:

“Eden Hazard played 30 minutes and he is recovering a good shape. I like him in this position, like a forward, and he can be a good solution for us. Also playing as a winger. To play as a second forward he must improve his shape but he is working and he knows his shape can a lot in the same way as the other players.”

Clearly, Hazard’s appeal would merely be strengthened if he’s handed a more central role next time out. As it is, though, the Belgian’s history suggests he’ll be well worth the outlay even if he reprises his left flank berth, though Conte’s decision to move to two up front could force a reassessment of his side’s attack.

The Blues have mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation during Hazard’s time at the club and if Conte decides on two centre forwards, the likes of Batshuayi – at a price of 9.0 – could be promoted in our thinking. The new striker racked up 17 goals and nine assists for a Marseille outfit that finished just nine points clear of the drop zone last season and will look more assured of minutes if Costa departs.

Conte’s choice of number one spot-kick taker could sway opinion. Hazard was uncharacteristically poor from penalties last season but his previous record may well persuade the new manager to name him as first-choice.

This would also heighten his appeal when compared to other premium priced midfielders – at present, no other option in the centre of the park costing 9.5 and over is first-choice for spot-kicks at their respective club.

Although he returned late to training due to Belgium’s Euro 2016 progress, Hazard is hoping to start against AC Milan in midweek and is confident he’ll be ready in time for the Gameweek 1 trip to West Ham in a fortnight’s time.

Having served up 37 goals and 36 assists in the three seasons prior to the last one, there’s a hope that 2015/16 will be no more than an anomaly in Hazard’s Fantasy career.

For Conte, the upside of last year’s disastrous title defence means that Chelsea have no European matches on their agenda, allowing the new manager to focus fully on domestic matters.

With rest and rotation a non-factor, then, the omens are looking good that Hazard can rediscover his spark and offer us the option of a fixture-proof, big-hitter once again.

Just a couple questions as I'm curious for people's thoughts on this...

I personally let bookmakers odds judge a lot of my decisions in this game and it's served me decently well with a top 10K finish this past year, so I figured I'd try to hear out some thoughts on this..

Why is there so much faith and effort into getting Ibrahimovic into teams at 11.5 price tag? I understand he's a great, flashy new player and all but with an over/under set at 14.5 goals this season for him it's hard to say he's going to be explosive.

He may do well, but I'm heavily doubting at his lofty price that he will deliver any "hauls" that justify that price. If oddsmakers are right, and he does score around 14.5 goals, that would be a pretty safe assumption there.

Also, if you haven't looked, a 100 pound bet on Leicester moneyline to beat lowly Hull will bet you 120 in winnings.. Odd as that is, bookies are telling us that this will be a low scoring game against probably the poorest team in the league with an o/u set at 2 goals in a game against the title defenders. So likewise.. should there be as big a draw to get in Mahrez out of the gate, or should we be cautious there too?

Because he's a good captain choice and usually your captain choice makes or breaks your gameweek, it's as simple as that.

Very valid points, my team is below and unless some new strikers join the premiership I not sure on many other point scoring choices / otherwise it will be epic midfield and aguero plus some 6.5m strikers

For reference.... At 14.5 goals, that would be 2.5 shy over Andre Ayews total at Swansea in midfield last season. I just can't justify bringing him in.

I can hear you there same thoughts as me - if tekkers goes to palace for example I will dump ibra and use money elsewhere - I want to have s good feeling about a striker and the club, I think ibra will do well just not massive pound - not if Utd have Rooney passing like that all season

Granted odds compilers are professionals but the initial markets are only their opinion. After this weight of punters money alters these markets when they no longer are odds compilers judgement but money markets. Already these will have affected by the volumes ( or lack of volumes) of punters money causing what appears to be in some people's eyes anomalies.

First of all you have to understand the mentality of the majority here and how they play the game.. the key with Zlatan is his ownership which sits at over 30% as of now.. the price doesn't even register with them they are scared to not have him and if that means having less cash elsewhere then that's fine because everyone else is in the same boat.. he could be 13m and it wouldn't change a thing

Firstly, I think listening to the bookies is always a good idea to gauge whether you are in the right ballpark. If you knew nothing about football then that alone would help pick a team.
However, specifically their odds can't reflect the fantasy points perfectly. Ibra might get 1 goal but it could be the winning goal and could net 3 bos etc. What about captaincy? What about VORP?

Secondly, I would advise listening to this site as a means to beat the bookies. You look at FPL ownership and some big % owned players aren't template hewre. The bookies odds reflect their initial guesstimate and then any influence by the market at large (i.e. the casuals)
So reading on here and picking up trends or nuggets or following Jonty's goals imminent means a lot of work done on your behalf against the mainstream which I have found to beneficial.

ibra 14.5 seems fair-first season in this rough league,no preseason
leicester -not a vintage set of champs, being mauled in transfer market(losing drinkwater after kante would be more than careless).I would see them winning by a little more than 2 tho given hull's dramas.
but generally bokies is a good place to start-eg liverpool 12/5 to beat arsenal looks fantastic value and i have taken it,but need to be careful -when did liverpol last beat arsenal @home.

my team below - I am thinking of downgrading Allen to 4.5m playing 3-4-3 and upgrading Morgan to VVD? Or stones as not sure if he will be even nailed joining city, Thoughts ?

    Foster and Heaton
    Baines, Stones (mcfc) Morgan
    Ayew, Hazard, Firmino, Gradel
    Aguero, ibra & borini

Subs 1 of the keepers, friend, Ake & allen

Yeah, bit of a bummer about UFPL - I really enjoyed it although not surprised, I mentioned a couple of times last season that the numbers playing it put it in doubt.

I think two 6.5 strikers up top are not going to be everyone's liking but there are so many good 6.5 options it allows me to have Mahrez, Mkit, Haz and Aguero and I really like that 🙂

    -----------------------Valdes-------------------------------

    ---------------- Azpi - Shaw - Stones -------------------

    Mahrez - Mkhitaryan - Hazard - Deulefeu/Mirallas

    ------------ Aguero - Wilson - Gray ------------

    Subs - Jakupovic - Friend - Mee - Hojbjerg

Bellerin Williams (EVE) Friend Pieters Francis

Looks tasty on paper, The 4 cheapies rotate great for a long time barring a few gameweeks (EVE/MID & STO/BOU) and Arsenal have a great immediate run.

Payet, Sanchez and Kane also have great fixtures coming and should be fully fit and flying by then.

I'm fairly sorted. Just one, maybe two subtle changes, which will be clear in time

    Foster/ Jakupovic
    Shaw/ Terry/ Evans/ Friend/ 4.5m
    Hazard/ Martial/ Tadic/ Deulofeu/ Capoue
    Aguero/ Lukaku/ Gray

    0.5m ITB

4.5m at the moment is Byram because he works well in the weeks that my other defenders have tough games.

Could upgrade to a 5.0m defender but think that 0.5m is a nice safety net for any unexpected risers or more expensive bandwagons.

United got two preseason matches left, one v Everton and the other in the charity shield.

Those two should give us a huge insight into questions about the attacking frontline, etc.

Would appreciate any advice you may have, pretty set on this, will most likely be wildcarding in the Int Break.
Gone for generally high ownership with Bats / Delboy as my punts

    Foster / Jaku
    Shaw / Friend / Fernandez / Souare / Lenihan
    Martial / Hazard / Mahrez / Deulofeu / 4.5
    Aguero / Gray / Batshuayi

From pretty much a dead team 6 years ago to now, I really would not have improved by much if it wasn't for this site.

2013/14 shows you what being stubborn and not bringing the league's top goalscorer can do to your rank 😆

My aim for last season was to beat that rank of 12,015. Highly doubt I'll get anywhere near the most recent rank. I'd settle for a top 10,000 finish.

Trying to decide between 3 dif teams. Keepers are Foster/Jaku for all 3.
May want to trade Terry for another 5.5/5.0 (open to suggestions). Defense a bit light but ok with me. Option C would make it easier to bring in Sanchez or Ozil if either one becomes a must-have later on, but it means no TOT coverage. Leaning towards A or C. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Ligue 1 GK of the season, Marseille's player of the season, understudy to Lloris for France, highly regarded and 31 years old, chose Palace over Chelsea.

That all sounds like a 1st choice GK to me.

Like you, the presence of Hennessey put me off until I did some research. But it looks to me like Mandanda should have the spot.

No, he has only just re-joined city for pre season...need to see a game or 3 from him first, looked v tired in Euros...+ where exactly will he play etc was poor away from home last season....most likely will pick him if and when Kun inevitably gets crocked....prefer Sanchez in a week or 2 for 0.5m+ and a Captain alternative....

    Hypothetical question.

You start going out with a very fit girl.

The complete package: nice rack, pert ass, long legs, great selection of underwear.

On the first night in bed she farts, it's loud and there's a fair hum off it.

Do you hang in there or ditch?

If she's the complete package then i'd definitely let it slide, if she did it again though that's a slap.

If you get put off by a fart good luck down the road.

You start seeing a whole lot worse....

      never might all that
      ..does she do 'assists'?
      ..BAP potential.
..The farts do potential leave the CSs potential at risk.
      ..Would you 'captain' her?
      ..What about her forthcoming 'fixtures'?
..what about combining her with another 'keeper'

You're a bad influence Tony! You just caused me to get my first comment deletion. I've been trying so hard to be good too.

    My team so far.

    GK Foster/Heaton
DEF Shaw, Terry, Friend, Reid, Stones
MID Townsend, Hazard, De Bruyne, Feghouli, Leko
    FWD Aguero, Lukaku, Negredo

0 in the bank although I could also have another .5 when West Ham buy a reserve left back tto fill in for Cresswell and I downgrade Reid to that 4.5 (probably olsson by all accounts) – I could then upgrade Leko to a 5 mil mid.

    Any thoughts?

Gray over Negredo? Rooney over Lukaku?
