Having only brought in goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and youngsters Bassala Sambou and Chris Ranshaw in the transfer window, Everton completed their first major signing of the summer earlier this week with the capture of Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye, after triggering the Senegal international’s £7.1 million buyout clause.

The 26-year-old agreed a four-year deal with the Merseysiders, and speaking about his first significant new addition since taking over at Goodison Park, Everton manager Ronald Koeman outlined what Toffees fans can expect from the former Lille midfielder:

“Idrissa will provide quality in our squad in the midfield and we want to increase the quality in the team. He was one of the players last season with the best record in interceptions and pressing in the midfield”.

The History

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, featuring alongside the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign, although he once again failed to register any attacking returns. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, only managing one assist, before establishing a key player for Les Dogues.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals from 32 league appearances, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered three assists. His performances attracted reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace, but it was Aston Villa who landed the midfielder last summer in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million.

The new boy earned just a single assist league outings, though his ball-winning displays in the centre of the park caught the eye in spite of Villa’s relegation to the Championship.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011, and has since racked up 33 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to find the net for his country.

The Prospects

Whether in the 4-2-3-1 set-up Koeman mainly employed at Southampton, or the 3-5-2 trialled against Man United in midweek, it’s expected that Gueye will compete for a central midfield position along with James McCarthy and Gareth Barry.

Considering he ranked second only to N’Golo Kante last season for both successful tackles (108) and interceptions (141), the summer signing looks odds-on to establish himself as a regular starter as the new manager adds more energy in the centre of the park.

Gueye’s arrival on Merseyside should help provide some much needed protection in front of the back four, given the Toffees conceded 55 goals last season, with only the bottom five sides letting in more. The appointment of Koeman should also help in that regard, bearing in mind that Southampton held the joint-fifth best defensive record in the top flight last term, conceding just 41 goals.

So while Gueye’s Fantasy appeal is likely to be limited to games that reward defensive actions such as FanDuel and DraftKings, he should help bolster the appeal of their nailed on defenders such as Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.

Both have seen their prices drop to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, and with Gueye’s presence in midfield likely to allow them more freedom to bomb forward down the flanks, we could see their attacking potential increase – certainly, Koeman’s decision to utilise the duo as wing-backs earlier this week has boosted their appeal.

Ramiro Funes Mori (5.0) is another to keep an eye on, though, given the Argentinian’s set-piece threat, having scored four goals in just 28 league matches last term, while he averaged a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, better than the likes of Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann (114.8) and Leicester’s Wes Morgan (172.4).

In terms of the Everton midfield, Gueye – despite a favourable 5.0 price tag in FPL – is unlikely to merit our attention due to his little attacking threat.

Both Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu have been impressive during pre-season thus far, with the latter having netted three times playing primarily as a “false nine” in the absence of Romelu Lukaku, after the Belgian was handed an extended break following his participation at the Euro 2016.

With speculation linking Lukaku with a return to Chelsea, Deulofeu may offer some out of position potential heading into Gameweek 1 should the Belgian depart, but that will likely be short lived, with Koeman certain to bring in attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Everton’s fixture list over the opening seven Gameweeks (TOT, wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL) is particularly favourable though, facing just one of last season’s top eight, so Toffees players look good options as we look to finalise our initial 15-man squads.

So while Gueye himself offers little Fantasy appeal, his energy and ability to break up opposition attacks should be good news for the prospects of both the Everton defence and flair players such as Barkley and Deulofeu.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it worth playing with just 14 players?

This is an idea that I know Triggerlips has been looking at recently that is ideal for those who plan/reluctantly expect to wildcard early. It is that we may be better off getting in a 4m defender who is unlikely to play in order to stretch our cash even further to get a better 14 man squad. The rationale is that you are unlikely to play your third defender much anyway.

I've tinkered with it and have managed to get two 5.5 defenders by swapping out Bou's Francis for his highly unlikely to play team mate 4m Smith. My team immediately looks better and looking at the fixtures I'd be unlikely to play Francis much anyway early on.

I'm not even planning to wildcard early and already this tactic looks sound for me.

What do you think? Is it worth having just 14 sure starters to improve your squad?

That 5th midf will be bench fodder most likely as well.

I think its a valid tactic to start with, and one that I use every season - for the first few gameweeks at least.

The trouble is at the moment i've got 2x 4m defenders but hopefully a regular stater at this price will emerge early on and I can swap them in.

2x 4m? There is a difference between what you hope and what is likely.

Some 4m defenders often start, but it normally depends on injuries to preferred defenders so you'll end up using all your transfers to keep a playing 4m defender in.

1 is fine, but 2? Too wild for me!

Yep - I've gone Wilson as 4th defender. There is so much speculation at the start of the season that some of these 4.0's may even start anyway. I like the idea of the extra 0.5 gained going in the bank to cover rises in certain areas. I've gone VVD, Terry, Shaw, Fernandez which to me seem nailed enough.

Plus if you are looking at early WC like many are you will have less weeks to worry about a 4.0 dropping in price quickly.

      I'm going with this plan.
Always use Wild Card early anyway so no point in having wasted funds on the bench short term.

I will probably go for a low owned 4.0m to avoid any price drops. So Paredes,Smith are probably no goes.

You have a point but with the early wild cards being banded about a lot of players that are highly owned and not playing will surely be at risk from a price drop.

Before a ball has been kicked, I think it's difficult to be sure who is nailed and who isn't, especially in teams with a raft of new players or with a new manager. Intentionally hamstringing yourself by definitely having at least one non-playing defender limits your options if injuries or rotation do hit. It's not for me. Could be a legitimate tactic during the middle part of the season, if you think the rewards outweigh the risk.

A 4M will probably become a regular starter - I don't remember a season where one hasn't. So I think we just have to be prepared to use a transfer on this when it comes around. Preferably during WC week as a transfer used on my 3rd sub is not something I like to do.

If you don't WC early somewhere along the line you'll wish your 4m non starter wasn't in your team and you had another option.

To me I prefer to have a defence with 5 lots of fixtures to choose from instead of 4. It helps when there is an injury/suspension as well.

The problem with this is if your 4.0 defender goes down in price., then that 0.1 drop is effectively a 0.5 drop. Not a problem if you really are planning to WC early doors, but I personally don't like planning such things.

I think you also have to look at is that like Targett last year went down to 3.7, if you never sell him you are maybe not loosing but others can wildcard him in at 3.7 and therefor gain 0.3 to spend on others.

And then have a guy that might or migh get to play as he will be in and out of the team. He might go down again and suddenly you a transfer to waste once more.
That is now 2 transfers on a defender spot. One to get Targett in and 1 to take him out. Possibly of course.

But yes sure that is a point to consider, though the idea is to focus more money on 14 instead of less on 15.

Then anothe way to view on what you said, is that not the case with a lot of players, can't have them all.

There will likely be a 4.5 playing defender that drops 0.1 as well by the time you WC.

Or a midfielder that dropped 0.1 somewhere.

It's just how the market works. Don't see it as a 0.1 you'll never get back...I just see it as a placeholder, prices will move - how many times have you maxed out your budget throughout the season anyway?

Well. Many had issues the week before you bb, ie the week you wc because they so wanted 15 bb players they spread their budget and picked lesser players.
Then you are stuck with them the weeks after.
BB is one week, there are 37 more.

It's a different tactic we are discussing.
I'm not on it, may be but it's too early yet.
It certainly has its merits though.

I've seen the post you made below that you called a rant.
It has points for sure, but it's one side of the coin.
If you have 15 players you have less money per player.
You have one more player that could get price drops.
You have one more player that c7uld get injured or ousted.
You have one more possition to handle with transfers.
                Etc etc.

Could be, many do it already.

But it is the AOA chip that makes it an even more interesting prospect. As a 'save' from making a transfer that inevitable week later in the season when injurys and suspension threatens to cost you a transfer due to having that non playing 5th 4m defender.

I like having 1 big hitter and then 2x rotating 2s for the remaining spots.

Concerns are that people are selecting players that are doubts as part of the 4. Lets say your defence is

Shaw Baines Friend Pieters and 4.0

Some of the following could very welll happen and mess you up

      - Stoke buy a new LB
      - Shaw could get injured
      - Baines sending off

Youre then struggling to get 3 defenders out and risk taking a -4 if you want to jump on any early bandwagons.

Sure the 0.5 can be used to make Routledge Snodgrass but its not worth the risk.

      While I'm on my soapbox.
Put this in to context. We are talking about spending 0.5 to achieve the following:

      1) Preventling possible loss in team value.
      2) Avoiding potential early WC
      3) A greater selection to play the fixtures.
      4) Insurance against injury/suspension/rotation.
      5) Guarding against wasting a FT.

That 0.5 buys you quite a bit. Rant over 🙂

Some good points and in terms of having a 4.0m defender that never plays in your team: a resounding "yes" from me.

Will never play esp at this stage of the season and as most will WC in the first few weeks, other 4.0s may emerge that actually are seeing some gametime.

As a major enabler when every 0.5 counts more than ever, a 4.0 is a worthy if not essential strategy.

I won't be doing it but if you are I think it's probably better to pick a 4.0 player with as close to 0% ownership as possible. If no-one else owns him no-one can sell him so he won't drop in price.

Why pick a 4.0 with almost 5% ownership ? There are ones with 0.2% ownership. Their prices are unlikely to deviate from the initial value.

It doesn't work like that. It's a % drop of initial ownership so you need the same percentage for a price drop for 5% owned players as you do for 0.2%.

          Well, yes and no.

The danger is to have a FFS template pick. FFS managers are fickle and active. They will pile into a 'good thing' and pile out again to get the next 'good thing'.

Consequently a 4.0 player that is never mentioned on here is less likely to fall in price than one that is favoured on FFS. Inertia and all that.

I personally don't think it's worth it. I think the benefit of having another playable option in defence outweighs the £0.5m. Particularly as we don't yet know which defences will show themselves to be strongest this year.

Also, I think it's worth being wary of over-striving for the most expensive team, better to focus on getting the right players rather than being too blinkered on using max budget.

I say a Hull fan claim that due to injuries, Lenihan(4m) will be starting atleast the first couple of games.
Bonus; his ownership is at 1.9%, meaning he is less likely to drop in price than for example Paredes is.

Having a 4m defender or a 4.5m midfielder to straighten your team is a viable option, it certainly gives you more flexibility to strengthen the rest of the team. Probably in the forward line as that's where the pricey guys are.

However it is still possible to have these as starters. Best to go for the low guys such as the promoted teams and pick up some from them who if nothing else will give you the 2 points for playing if you get hit with alot of injuries in the one week.

Surely Brad Smith is going to play considering Bournemouth shelled out £6m on him. That's a lot for bournemouth on a player who won't play. He's been playing in pre season.

If you play 3 games with 0.5m more on the pitch, mathemaically it's worth approx 1.12 point (1m=0.75p/game). Not worth it in my book for that reason alone, but more flexibility to get the right players early is the biggest benefit.

Isn't this the wrong question. Should say 'do you start with 13 starters'.

Early on need to maximise value in the starting 11. Can have a non-starting MID and DEF . Leaves a 4.5 DEF to start in emergencies.

Given there isn't really a playing 4.0 defender, are we missing a trick with Wasilewski if he plays in the Charity Shield? Leave 0.5 in the bank and replace him GW2, may have a nice earner there.

Course the risk Hernandez may play might not be resolved if Huth starts with Morgan on Sunday.

Just thinking outside the Lenihan/Brad Smith box which is a bit of a punt.

I've found that the 4.0 defender isn't a good idea. Best value is in rotating 4.5s.

Having a 4.0 (or even a 3.9) defender is always an excellent idea - you just need to wait until there's one that's nailed. Not easy to spot, of course, for GW1. But at least one usually appears after a few weeks.

Exactly, Simpson was the one for me at 3.9 last year. My point is going for someone like Brad Smith or Lenihan will only result in dropped TV, which is unnecessary.

Hi Pasqual, I had the same opinion about the 4.0 defender until I owned Targett last season, I had a rough start (3 million OR after GW2) and I wildcarded and brought him in, after Bertrand came back though, he quickly decreased in price and I remember selling him at 3.7. That really was nasty for the TV.

I think that's the best option, there are some on here going with 4.0s though. Just think those people are better off going with Was for a week if he's likely to play, or even a 4.0 who is never going to play so their value doesn't drop.

People aren't putting anywhere near enough thought into GW2 captain. Kun might not start away to Stoke. City have CL qualifiers in midweek on either side of GW2. Spurs assests need to be seriously considered for this reason (CPL in GW2)

Very much want to jump all over Feghouli and Carroll...
The obvious thing to say is 'bad fixtures'

Chelsea away - this could be anything.
    Bournemouth at home - goals
City away - has been a fixture that West Ham have looked upon favourably

Then Watford at home, west brom away, saints at home and boro at home...
    All very lucrative.

Any West ham fans about? Is Kouyate likely to be as attacking in the league as he was last night ?

    1. devils advocate
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Not a WH fan but watched them a lot last season.

Kouyate is very capable of attacking returns as he does like to get forward with late runs in the box despite primarily being considered a defensive mid.

He's particularly dangerous at getting on the end of set pieces and crosses in general when making those late runs, and obviously this is a big bonus when you have Payet and now Feghouli also who are more than capable of supplying excellent service.

Kouyate is by no means a prolific scorer, and he can just as easily go on barron runs as he can hit a purple patch. He's probably bang in the middle between a defensive mid and an attacking mid to be fair, so whilst there may be better 'attacking' mids at his price point he's certainly not the worst option you could pick, and definitely worth consideration if you like the differential route.

Personally I'd only consider him if it was certain Payet was playing to provide the supply, despite his recent 2 goals, however unlike some other options in that price point he is nailed on and proven in the league so could be a safe option to start with.

      Hope that helps.

I think the main point to consider here is that most the options in the 5.5 - 6.5mil bracket haven't been considered nailed on players in the past, however most of us have to pick some options in this bracket to spread funds elsewhere so it's a matter of trying to guess which options have the best chance of nailing down a place in their respective teams in this new season.

The problem is it is all just guesswork and none of us know for sure. However, we can try to predict which options have the best chance based on the only information we have thus far got to go by, ie. preseason, competition for places, and past performance and circumstances.

It's also an idea to consider which players are at new teams, under new management, and potentially at the age where they could be on the cusp of raising their game to the next level and finding some consistency that their past promise has alluded to.

In my opinion players like Redmond and Del fit this bill, and whilst there's still many question marks with them, we can't 100% say they won't be nailed on based on a previous manager's selection of them.

So far I think there's more positives that point to them seeing much more game time this season, so I'm willing to take that risk given the alternatives are just as weak or unproven at that price point.

    Morning all,

Was all set on Deulofeu due to his from and OOP.

However, Redmond looks an even better option.

He won't be playing upfront if Lukaku is staying, so he's not an OOP option in that scenario.
The United game saw a new formation which didn't really suit him.

If Everton play four at the back, he'll be in a good position to pick up points.

Substance is he's a better player IMO, only doubt is how he'll adapt to the league but with those fixtures i'm willing to take the risk...easy switch to another 5.5 mid if he's not doing it.

He wasn't very good last season, I think the BPL is a more difficult league so he might struggle. All the 5.5 options could be awful, who knows.

                  As i've said below:

Ramirez lacking a bit of fitness while Fischer will have had a full pre-season. Ramirez may well turn out to be the better option in the long run but I'm sure Fischer will start stronger.

    Rate my team
    GK: DeGea, Jakupovic

DEF: Walker, Sagna, Gabriel, Stones, Friend

MID: Mkihtaryan, Mahrez, Ayew, Barkley, Fletcher

    FWD: Kane, Lukaku, Long

And before you say it - no, i dont need kun or ibra. Too much money spent(wasted) on players who could get injured just like kun did in the first game last year. If you buy them, it makes the rest of your team worse and thats too much of a risk to rely on them.

If Aguero is fit he scores, end of. Outscored Kane points per minute on the pitch last season. And Like Kanye says, he's an insurance policy in that if (sorry, when) he gets injured you can afford to replace him with anyone else with your free transfer. Getting him in means you're likely to have to take an 8 point hit
