The Gameweek rolls on with a showpiece fixture at the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal host Liverpool in the tea-time encounter with a host of Fantasy talent on show.

On paper, this could be a tight and cagey affair but Arsenal’s injuries at the back may just prompt both sides to go on the offensive.

Certainly Jurgen Klopp has named an attacking line-up, spearheaded by Roberto Firmino and supported by new signing Sadio Mane and the guile of Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana.

That quartet with surely stretch the Gunners backline with Wenger forced to start with a pairing of Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding.

Wenger will look to Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott to provide a response at the other end, with Aaron Ramsey set to start in the number ten role in the absence of Mesut Ozil.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Jakupovic - Hart
    Valencia - Stones - Walker - Evans - Smith
    Lamela - Martial - Willian - Redmond - Capoue
    Zlatan - Aguero - Long

    0.5 itb.
Fix my keeper problem with Hart, or change upfront, if so, Long to who? Or save transfer to get more flexibility in gw3?

Hart has to go. Jak is not a safe first choice option

Just a few thoughts from me as I have been out and missed most of the fun. 🙂

I think Nabs deserves credit for formulating a strategy, planning it extremely well and having the cojones to do something different to the norm. I don't think he deserves the sour grapes he has had here and elsewhere:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/08/13/the-stock-check-gameweek-1-saturday-2/?hc_page=9#hc_comment_13801460

On the strategy itself I'd also like to make a couple of comments. Not to rehash the whole thing because I set out my reasoning at length in the OP. Just to comment on some of the feedback that has ensued.

    1. I do believe that many managers have a coloured view about last season's BB because they got big scores and ranking jumps the week they played it. But the thing is that they would have got a big score anyway. For example if they had just played 2nd wildcard that week and had 11 DGW players.

    2. In addition, you would expect a ranking boost when playing BB, no matter what week you play it in, wouldn't you?

    3. The argument therefore comes down to assessing the value of a DGW BB against a SGW BB. But to make that comparison you must take EVERY ASPECT into account, not just the BB score. For example, do you lose points by having to play 2nd wildcard a week or more early? Do you have to take hits to re-balance afterwards? Do you get drawn into making poor long-term selections based on one GW only? All of that is germane.

    4. In which case the comparison needs to be made over a period of weeks. And it is the effect on the way we use the 2nd wildcard that is the critical factor. This was, in fact, the crux of my original reasoning.

    5. I have no need or desire to persuade anyone. Personally I am playing BB early because I think it's the best thing to do. I am confident that if I can get 12-18 points from it without any compromise then the advantage of having it out of the way will stand me in good stead come DGW season. If I had 24 points from it like Nab has I'd be delighted. So, once again, well done to him. 🙂

      Hey Ruth.

I mentioned to Nabs that my interpretation of ur argument is "do your BB when you want, but don't WC or base your team around it." So my thought is if you have a higher TV in GW 30-38 wouldn't it be more beneficial to play it late as you have a stronger bench? And even if you do do 1/2 transfers to prepare to use if you use it in GW35+ you don't really need to change much as there is only 3 GWS left. What do you think? Thanks

        Well...

I think not compromising the 2nd wildcard is the key thing for me.

After that it's more of a judgement call about when is best. The advantage of using it early IF you know you will also wildcard early anyway is that you can use your initial (GW1) squad selection to set it up. Essentially you are deploying it after a wildcard - Nab was able to adjust his BB team until the last minute and that's how come Kingsley was in it.

I think it could also be valid to use it later for the reasons you suggest. More TV and possibly a slightly better bench. But there's no doubt that GW1 gives you the cleanest BB entry. GW1 is the only week where you can (in effect) wildcard and BB IN THE SAME WEEK.

Fair enough. I have seem some pretty rough comments.

Mainly I wanted to say a couple of things about the strategy itself. Because I actually do think it has merit and is not "ridiculous" as one well-known manager described it. 🙂

Last post from me on the topic anyway.

If winning FPL had a prize of £250,000 then I think this would have relevance.

However, winning it means jack. (for normal sane adults)

Fantasy games for piddling prizes, in my opinion, are meant to be played for fun. So going into the minutiae of when to play your bench boost chip is crazy behaviour.

Yes, that is true on the scheme of things. Of course.

But by that standard much of what is posted on this site (and indeed the site itself) is equally crazy. 😕

For me, FPL is a hobby. Unfortunately I am one of those types that like to do what I do well. I also have cash leagues where I stand to win £1200 if I happen to come out on top.

Is -12 points for transfer a bad thing?

Don't want to suffer the forthcoming price changes.

Need a striker for the long term / whole season (draft league)......?

    A.) Calum Wilson

    C.) Andy Carroll

Too early to say. Gray may be the Matt Richie 2.0 (I'm keeping faith like I did for too long with Richie last season). Carroll if he nails a spot. Wilson looks really good also - sharp, but waiting for better fixtures.

What a day. 4 goals and Firmino not involved in one. Not happy.

52 with only Hazard yet to play. If I don't hit over 60 I'll be really disappointed. After leading all my ML's yesterday I fear I'll be slumped to mid table.

And what's worse, I've been forced to change my badger Grav. Worst day ever.

Not particularly but I find Firmino the most erratic. Easy fixtures, maybe he'll haul, maybe he won't. Tough fixtures where he's supposed to perform great, still might not do anything. Happened last season when they smashed Villa and he walked away with just 1 assist.

I wouldn't own Coutinho fwiw, but Mane seems to be more a form player than all over the place.

That's kinda my point. He can score in any game, not saying he's fixture proof but will play up top and Klopp loves him. More likely to get points imho. Mane can be amazing but only on a single game basis, check his saints stats, very rarely did he perform for any length of time (in an FPL sense).

            1. Somalion
              • 16 Years

I know Mane well and his inconsistencies but he's streaky like that. I suppose what I'm trying to say is I get a kind of a sense about some players, even someone like Mane. With Firmino I genuinely never have any clue whether it's a good fixture or not for him. Didn't last season either. So while you say he can score in any game, which he can, he can also blank in games where all of his teammates are filling their boots.

That's understood. I have the same with Oscar. I think the issue is they are all just as tricky to predict, but it looks like you gotta have at least 1 of them. If they are all on form then 'Pool could really smash some teams this year.

Yep, I actually have the same thing with Oscar now you mention it. I'm definitely getting one, I'd just like if they decided between themselves that one will be the primary goal scorer 😉

How would you pick? I went for the guy most likely to be up top and play most games.

I'd say that's sensible but I think (could be completely wrong) that his returns as a CAM diminish quite a lot. So it kinda depends on how often they plan to use him there. If you get lots of forward performances from him, you've done well. If he plays up top a lot less this season, points may drop off.

I'll probably just risk going another couple of weeks and watch all three to see who I fancy. I'd reckon Mane and Firm should see similar game time.

Not sure. Wanted to bench him and start Feghouli. But he has EL fixture at Thursday, so maybe he won't start against BOU.

Gray out perhaps. I'd be satisfied with the rest tbh. Nice to have Ibra and Kun.

      Gray > Wilson?

        But that Liverpool defence tho.

I am afraid Feghouli and Deulofeu won't start. Feg has EL at Thursday and if he starts there, I don't think he will against BOU. Lukaku is back and Deulofeu was awful, so it's a risk also.

Alright, keep Gray in that case. He looked promising.

Wait till Thursday to see Feghouli's minutes in the EL, I reckon Deulofeu will start but we'll see. Don't sweat it yet.

Key passes are the same as chances created right?

    1. TJ_777
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

      No

Chances Created = Key Passes + Assists

A key pass is a chance that doesn't equal a goal

yes I *think* so. although sometimes there is a concept called an 'intentional assist' where the assister has to intend his pass to be turned into a shot.

it might be the case that key passes are all passes that then result in a shot whereas as chances created must include the assister intentionally passing to create a shot.
not sure if that makes sense?

      • 12 Years

      From my understanding..

A key pass leads to a goal scoring opportunity

A chance created is a direct assist to a shot on goal

All my instincts are saying for me to use my wildcard, but I don't think it's the smart move. Should I save it?

    Foster (Jaku)
    Valencia, Stones, Morgan (Amat, Friend)
    Firmino, Hazard, Alli, Redmond (Capoue)
    Aguero, Gray, Vardy

Tadic-> Lamela for 0.5 or nah.

Lamela has proven talent and relatively easier fixtures, Tadic did not do much last match, justified?

Looking at the Bournemouth - United game today, I'm more interested in West Ham assets for GW 2 than Ibra.

Bournemouth will ship goals and West Ham have some good players up front.

        Payet,Ayew and Carroll audition tomorrow.
